They'd been dating. It was a comfortable rhythm. Jamie would normally stop by the hospital and eat lunch with Eddie, especially Monday afternoons when he had leftovers from Sunday dinner.

But today was different.

Jamie walked into the locker room for his wallet and then was going to head into the hospital to meet Eddie.

But today, Eddie was sitting in her scrubs on the floor, against his locker, staring at the wall in silence, completely stoic with a leg pulled to her chest. Her perfect ponytail was in shambles and she looked like she'd gone through hell and back.

"Eddie, my God, what happened?" Jamie jumped to her side, pulling her close.

It takes her a second to process his question, "I had a kid die on me today." She looks at me and her lip falters as she tells him, not offering any other explanation. "The look on their faces when I came back from NICU-Jamie do you want to have kids because I could never go through what she is right now. I mean I've lost patients before but it hit differently this time." She continues to sputter for more words but Jamie just pulls her closer. Eddie's head drops to his shoulder and she just cries.

And he lets her. "Eddie, it's ok. I'm sure you did everything you could." He runs a hand through her hair and she sits up, facing him perfectly square-on.

She stares at him a few moments before saying, "I need you." And then dissolving into a puddle of tears, sobs racking her body.

A door opens at some point and then promptly closes. He thinks it could've been Alex asking whether he'll eat with her or at the hospital.

"I'm not going anywhere." Jamie mumbles into her temple, placing a kiss there and sweeping a stray lock of hair. He just holds her until she finally falls asleep.

He sees the blinds open again and it's Alex but with the other Alex and Raina. "What're they doing here?" He mouths, hoping the door opening doesn't wake a finally-sleeping Eddie across his chest and lap.

Raina takes a pen and pad from her pocket and scribbles, "Let me take her home. She's had a rough day."

Alex takes the pad before I can respond and scribbles himself, "It was the baby you guys delivered that first day. We can take her home and let her rest. I got Dr. Robbins taking her patients."

"Let me," Jamie whispers, "unless you want to but I've got the rest of the day off. I was going to surprise her with movie tickets but, uh, I found her in here." Alex and Raina nod understandingly, "I'm going to let her sleep a little bit more. I'll text you guys."

"I'll come over later." Raina says quietly, joining both Alexs outside.

Once home and still a little dazed and confused, she showered while he made tea, ordered Chinese, double checked there was enough ice cream in the freezer and rented Sabrina, one of Eddie's absolute favorite movies. He doubted it would make her feel much better but remembering how he felt after having to shoot someone for the first time, anything helped.

"Hey," She mumbled, now in sweats and a t-shirt, plopped onto the sofa and hit play on the movie but not watching it at the same time.

"Hey." Jamie gave her a sad smile and handed her the cup of peach tea he'd found in her cabinet. "Alex told me it was Shelby's baby. I'm sorry, I know you liked her."

"I just, I always thought that'd be me one day. My husband rushing in at the last moment because he's a busy doctor or cop or something somewhere. I guess because I saw myself in her, when that baby died, I also saw that in me. Jamie, this world dishes me out one more catastrophic meltdown and I don't think I can take it."

"Babe, I know. And it's not. Maybe you did see yourself in Shelby but that doesn't mean that you are actually her. Our baby is going to be beautiful and bouncy and is going to drive us nuts and we're going to have to get Alex to fend off the jerks who wanna break her heart. Alright? Look," He sits them up, making her take in what he's saying. "it's going to be ok. I love you and it's going to be ok." He presses another kiss to her forehead like in the locker room, resuming their previous position.

"So, now we're having kids?" Eddie smiles, suddenly seeing a future with Jamie, although this isn't the first time she let her mind travel a few years down the line.

"I wouldn't mind a few, especially with you." Jamie runs a hand over her hair while she lays in his lap. His voice is sweet and calm and about to lull her to sleep.

"A boy and a girl, maybe a few years apart. They need to be able to stick together and drive us crazy at the same time." Eddie closes her eyes and imagines her and Jamie's two hypothetical children playing in front of the couch and babbling while they're still laying down and enjoying the light that's casting a warm glow on the small family.

FOUR YEARS LATER

"What about Summer if it's a girl?" Eddie offers with a baby name book propped on her bump.

"Summer? No! How 'bout Shannon?" Jamie replies,

"More like Shan-none" Eddie quips, a wry smile showing. "Since we're on S names; Scarlett?"

"You like all these hot names. We need something sweet and girly and classy. Ha! Look what this has done to me...I should not be saying sweet, girly and classy in the same sentence." Jamie laughs, even though he loves every minute.

"Well you liked me!" Their banter was one of Eddie's favorite things about their relationship and never failed to make the other smile.

"Yes, yes I did." Jamie leans over and places a chaste kiss on her nose,

"Oh, Jamie! Feel!" Eddie exclaims, lighting up completely as she takes Jamie's hand and places it on the lower left side of her stomach to a faint tapping.

Eddie looks at the both of them, pondering how much her life had gloriously changed in the last few years...and she loved what it had become more than she had words for.
