Sunday wasn't the easiest day either. Having convinced the landlord she managed to view the house, leaving Megan to look after Peter as she took a rather clingy Charlotte along with her. Then of course she had to make the journey back to Charlie, despite preferring the sound of hiding at Megans. Time to face the music, she couldn't hide forever after all. Having promised to phone Megan later on they reluctantly pulled apart from their hug leaving Duffy to head back.
He couldn't say his weekend had gone much better work was hellish and the staff were seriously all pulling on is last shred of patience although if he were honest maybe his mood hadn't helped matters. Saying that, comments like 'oh someone clearly isn't getting any' didn't really help his mood or the situation either. Try as he might he was unable to get Duffy to talk to him on the phone, being in the dark wasn't helping matters at all. Pulling into the driveway his heart dropped as realised she still wasn't home. She was coming home wasn't she? He barely got in the door when he heard the familiar crunch of her car pulling up beside him followed by the usual excited barking from Copper. Thank god for that.
Her hand made it to the handle before she felt him pulling it open, releasing her grip she glanced awkwardly downwards as he came face to face with her. No words were spoken, neither had the chance before Copper burst between them, rushing inside. His gaze broken he glances behind her, realising something was missing. Something that made his heart sink once more.
"Where's the kids?" Unable to meet his eye, she couldn't bare to see the confusion and pain in them, she instead keeps her eyes on hands.
"Mums." Sighing she risks a glance up. "Can I come in?" Her question was met with a perplexed stare before he eventually moved to allow her in. She'd barely said a word but he had horrible feeling he knew where this was all going whereas in reality he hadn't a clue.
Moving past him she places her her overnight bad beside the staircase before heading to the kitchen, keeping her shoes and coat on. Her voice was weak, nervous even.
"Tea?" Shaking his head that was the last thing he wanted.
"No. I want you to talk to me." The fact she was yet to remove her coat was only adding to his anxiety, clearly she didn't plan on staying long. "Going somewhere?"
"Huh?"
"Your coat." He pointed out causing her to sigh. She couldn't, not yet. If she did she knew she'd cave.
"I will take it off...Just not yet." Well that made no sense, none at all. Still he didn't get much time to consider the meaning before she continued. Her voice hurt. "I know."
"Know what?" What could she possibly know? What had he done? Unless...
"You and Baz." He felt the colour drain from him as it all suddenly made sense. But it wasn't anything, not enough to warrant this.
"What about me and Baz? There's nothing between us darling, I promise." If there was one thing she couldn't handle it was lies. Her nerves speedily gave way to rage.
"Really? Why did you kiss her if there's nothing going on then?" He opened his mouth to answer, more than once before eventually getting the words out.
"What?!" Shaking her head, unable to look at him she couldn't believe he'd continue to lie. Who was this man? Who did she marry?
"Did you really think you could kiss another woman at work and I wouldn't find out?! That no one would tell me?" She'd got it all wrong!
"Shit! Duffy please I can explain."
"Yeah I'm sure you can." Meeting his gaze, her eyes full of tears her voice breaks. "I never for one second expected you to be just like every other man. I thought you loved me." Seeing the tears broke his heart, knowing he'd done this to her but it wasn't what she thought. He did love her!
"I do love you!" Scoffing she shook her head, she wanted with all her heart to believe him.
"Really? Or do you feel trapped in this marriage? Stuck because of the kids. I am perfectly capable of looking after myself and the kids. I don't need someone to look after me." Her defences raised she barely gave him a chance to process any of that before adding. "I've found a house, near Megan. It's closer to Andrew so I doubt he'll complain. We will be out your hair soon enough."
If he thought he was panicking before that was nothing to now! Feeling his heart racing he quickly leaps towards her, taking her by the shoulders. "No! No Duffy I don't want you to go anywhere! You've got the wrong idea I promise! Let me explain!"
Trying not to let her emotions overrun her, which was difficult right now to say the least, she sighs and nods.
"Baz was upset, her marriage is a mess. I was trying help, as a friend nothing more. Expect I don't think that's how she seen it. I thought she was upset and took her to the office but rather than talk she kissed me. Yes I didn't pull away instantly, I was shocked. But I did pull away and strictly told her that's not what I wanted. Ask her yourself, I have no feelings for Baz. I swear it!"
"If that's all true then why not tell me at the time? This all happened weeks ago! Yet you continue to constantly be late and she's never out your pocket from what I hear!"
"I didn't want to upset you or make work difficult for you. I know I'm late but it's not because of her, the department's at risk of closing down again."
"Why wouldn't you tell me?! You told her and not me?!"
"You already had enough stress with work the kids and I know what's happened to Tina has hit you hard. I didn't want to add another thing on your shoulders. I didn't tell her, she told me."
"That's not what has been stressing me out! Don't tell me what I can and can't cope with! You and her have been stressing me that and..." Faltering she can't bring herself to say it.
"And?" Seeing the guilt, worry and god knows what else flash into her eyes his heart rate picked up again. "Duffy? What are you hiding."
Taking a deep breath she stepped out of his hold to remove her jacket. Glancing down at her figure, in her panic yesterday she hadn't made the best choice in packing, her top and jeans combined clung to her bump. "I'm pregnant."
