Violet Berry {Season 1}
Name: Violet Berry
Full Name: Violet Dorothy Berry
Full Name Meaning
Violet: The name Violet comes from the Old French word "violette," by way of the Latin "viola," which indicates a certain kind of bluish-purple flower. Therefore, the vocabulary word denotes both the ornamental flower and the vibrant color. The violet flower is said to signify "modesty" and "faithfulness." Flower names became popular in the latter half of the 19th century and by the early 1900s, names like Violet, Rose, Lily, Viola, Daisy and Flora were all the rage. By the 1970s, flower names became passé but today are experiencing a revival once again.
Dorothy: Dorothy is the English form of the Greek Dōrothéa (Δωροθεος) which is made up of the Greek elements "doron" (δωρον) meaning "gift" and "theos" (θεος) meaning "god". Consider the Greek masculine name Theodorus which is essentially the reversal of these elements and means the same thing: "god's gift". The name Dorothea was famously borne by an early 4th century saint, one of the so-called "virgin martyrs". Dorothea of Caesarea had found Christianity and so refused to worship the pagan gods of the Roman Empire. For this she was sentenced to death during Emperor Diocletian's persecution of the Christians. According to later medieval legend, Dorothea cheerfully faced her execution rejoicing that she would soon enter the gates of the garden of heaven. A young man by the name of Theophilus mockingly asked her to send some fruits once she arrived. As she knelt and prayed before her death by beheading, an angel arrived with a basket of roses and apples for Theophilus (who converted to Christianity immediately thereafter and was later martyred himself). As a result, Dorothea and Theophilus share the same Feast Day (February 6). Interestingly, the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy (founded in 1835) is an order of nuns renowned for their cultivation of flowers in the name of St. Dorothy's "garden". Not by happenstance, St. Dorothy is one of the patron saints to florists, gardeners and horticulturists. Her legend and cult became widespread throughout Europe starting in the early Middle Ages (7th century) and her name was readily bestowed upon baby girls as a protective measure during difficult times. The concept of the "virgin martyr" was undeniably important in medieval times; such saints were extolled for their youth, beauty and commitment to virginity in the name of Christ. St. Dorothea of Caesarea was on par with other highly venerated early saints: The Great Martyr Barbara, Catherine of Alexandria and Margaret of Antioch – together they became known as "The Main Virgins". Dorothea was more popular on mainland Europe than in England; the name wouldn't come into general usage among English-speakers until the 15th century (when the name was truncated to Dorothy). Aside from Dorothy's "saintly" influence, this is a name with some literary cachet as well. We're all quite familiar with American author L. Frank Baum's heroine Dorothy from "'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (1900). But there's also sharp-witted Dorothy Parker, founder of the esteemed literary circle known as the Algonquin Round Table.
Berry: The Norman Conquest of England in 1066 added many new elements to an already vibrant culture. Among these were thousands of new names. The Berry family lived in the county of Devon, where the family settled after arriving in England with William the Conqueror at the time of the Norman Conquest of England. The name is derived from the phrase at the Bury which has evolved to the more modern term borough.
Full Name Reasoning
Violet: Shelby had decided to name her second daughter Violet, just like the flower. It was a beautiful name for a beautiful girl.
Dorothy: LeRoy and Hiram decided that their second daughter should also have a Broadway-themed middle name, since Rachel's middle name was Barbra — naming her after Barbra Streisand. They decided on Dorothy, which was one of Judy Garland's greatest movie roles of all time.
Berry: If it's not obvious, it's because that's her dads' surnames, and it's also Rachel's surname. Though she doesn't use Berry as much as when she's older, but that's for other reasons.
Nicknames
Vi: Violet prefers to be called Violet by her friends and her loved ones. It just makes it easier on her. In the first season and half of the second season of Glee, Violet refuses to let Rachel call her Vi. The second half of season two and onwards, Rachel calls her Vi.

Backstory: Violet Dorothy Berry was born on 14 September 1995. Her birth mother was Shelby Corcoran, and her fathers were LeRoy and Hiram Berry. Violet's older sister is Rachel. From 1995 to 2000, Rachel and Violet were their dads's entire worlds. For some unknown reason, Rachel grew jealous of Violet, and from 2000 to 2011, Rachel shifted herself to be the center of attention and sole Berry child. She pushed Violet to the side and caused her to become neglected. This caused Violet to resent Rachel for so many years.

Parents
Shelby Corcoran: Shelby is Violet and Rachel's birth mother, and coached Vocal Adrenaline in season 1. She never got to have that mother/daughter bond with Violet and Rachel, but she loved them nonetheless.
Hiram Berry: Hiram is one of Violet's fathers. Hiram's husband is LeRoy. It is implied that at one point, he and LeRoy did care about Violet, but they stopped after she was 5 years old.
LeRoy Berry: LeRoy is Violet's other father. LeRoy is Hiram's husband. As said with Hiram, it is implied that both Berry men cared for Violet at one point, but stopped after she turned 5 years old.
Siblings
Rachel Berry: Rachel is Violet's older sister, and being Rachel's sister is not at all amazing. When Rachel was 6, she began to get jealous of Violet getting their dads' attention, so she started tricking LeRoy and Hiram into neglecting Violet. Rachel hated sharing the spotlight and she surely didn't want to share the love of their dads.
Extended Family
Carole Hudson-Hummel: Carole was another mother figure in Violet's life, and became Violet's stepmother-in-law.
Burt Hummel: Burt was another father figure in Violet's life, and became Violet's father-in-law.
Finn Hudson: Even though Finn and Violet were best friends, they acted a lot like an older brother and younger sister. Finn became Violet's stepbrother-in-law.
Jesse St. James: In the future, Jesse ended up becoming Violet's brother-in-law.
Others
Will Schuester: After Violet is disowned by her family, Will takes full guardianship of Violet and moves her into his house. Will is more of a father figure to Violet than her own fathers were.
Emma Pillsbury: Violet could always count on Ms. Pillsbury whenever she felt lonely and sad, and Emma would always listen. Though Emma was not Violet's biological mother, she treated Violet like a daughter. This is how Emma came to be Violet's mother figure.
Pets: Violet never had any pets.

Best Friend: Finn Hudson
Violet and Finn first meet when Violet gets a slushie to the face from Puck right after her audition for the New Directions. Though Finn is dating Quinn at the time they meet, he starts to develop feelings for Violet in the later half of the season. Violet lets him down gently; she likes Finn, but only as a friend. By the end of the first season, Finn and Violet are like big brother and little sister. The connection that Violet had with Finn was the reason why Violet took Finn's death the hardest; she'd lost one of the only people that she could always go to in times of need. Though Violet was able to cope and mourn, she could never truly move on from Finn's untimely death.

Love Interest's Name: Kurt Elizabeth Hummel
Love Interest's Appearance
Chris Colfer
Cory Monteith (in Tina's Dream during Props)
Kurt is slender and quite tall in regards to the rest of his New Directions teammates. His eyes are glasz (blueish, greyish, greenish color), and his skin is very pale and clear. His hair is chestnut and wavy. His pale skin earned him the nickname "Porcelain" from Sue Sylvester. He takes very good care of himself.
He seems to never wear the same outfit twice a week unless under stress or depressed, as shown in Funk. Throughout the seasons, Kurt's fashion trends change, Season One he would always wear large amounts of clothing and as the series continued the layers began to decrease, but staying eccentric all the way through. Ryan Murphy has said this is due to Kurt's journey of accepting himself for who he is.
He has also made changes in his appearance, such as getting a tattoo on his upper back, and a piercing in his tongue during Season Five, as part of his grieving process due to Finn's death. It is implied he took the piercing out.
Love Interest's Sexuality: Kurt identifies as bisexual
Personality
Kurt's personality is one of the most multi-faceted in the show, having interests in everything from cars to fashion, and seems to have very high standards for himself.
In the beginning of the show, he appears to be somewhat superficial; Kurt is obsessed with the latest fashions, which are normally of the highest quality and most expensive brands. He is also very obsessed with his hair, spending hours preparing it, and often adjusting it at random intervals, even when performing. While many assume him to just be a snob, the truth is, this is simply a mask that Kurt wears in order to hide his insecurities and fears.
He can be brutally honest, once telling Mercedes she looked like "a technicolor zebra" because of her hoodie. He's very smart, as proven through his quick-witted sense of humor and use of intelligent vocabulary. This was further proven when speaking to Mr. Schuester he told him he wasn't "challenged in the least" at McKinley. He can be manipulative at times, as seen when he tricks Rachel into dressing more like Sandy from Grease in order to win over Finn's affections, despite Kurt's knowledge Finn is attracted to the opposite look in a girl. This side of Kurt is also shown when he sets up Finn's mother with his father to get closer to Finn.
As the only openly gay boy at McKinley, he tries his best to keep strong, a trait that his father and many in the Glee club value in him. However, having no friends at school who he can completely talk to about being gay, he is often seen as a very lonely individual. This loneliness has at times caused his romantic interest in certain boys to become a bit unsettling, as seen during the course of his crush with Finn. When Kurt develops a crush he seems to fall hard, as shown with Finn in Season One and Blaine in Season Two.
Throughout, he is able to persevere through the cruelties of high school. Kurt puts those he cares about before his own wants, despite his superficial exterior, as in Wheels where he throws a high note, thus giving up a solo in order to spare his father the stress of being ridiculed for his son singing a girl's song, and somewhat in Laryngitis, trying to change himself so that he and his father can better relate and because he felt that he wasn't doing enough to help his dad feel comfortable (though this all may or may not be a cover-up). Kurt, like Rachel and Mercedes, can be a bit of a diva at times, but he cares deeply for his fellow Glee Club members, as seen when he wanted to help the boys get revenge against Vocal Adrenaline for egging Rachel. Tina was also picked on by two bullies but is defended by Kurt. He also told the bullies to pick on him instead.
He has tendencies to lash out and get defensive under pressure, as illustrated particularly in his and Blaine's fight in Blame It on the Alcohol. Kurt, while ambitious, seems to always be generous enough to appreciate real talent. He contends with both Rachel and Blaine for solos, but always acknowledges Rachel's talent and singing ability. Even when competing with her for the lead solo in Funeral, he rises to his feet and applauds and is pulled down by Santana. He is extremely good at keeping secrets, even when his safety is at stake, as seen in his relationship with Karofsky. He is also sensitive enough to forgive him later because he realizes that Karofsky is miserable. Kurt is shown throughout to be a very caring individual, even towards people he isn't close to; such as defending Rory and shouting at Santana for "attacking" him in Mash Off.
He also has a strong "family first" mentality, as shown in Wheels when he throws the high F in order to protect his father. Kurt is also an extremely forgiving person, seen when he forgives Dave for bullying him, when he forgives Rachel for running for class president when he forgives Mercedes for busting his window and when he forgives Blaine for cheating on him.
