My doorbell rang at 1 a.m. I was half-asleep. The last week was fun. The boys had become great friends of mine and Liam has a crush on Lana so I'm trying to set them up. We've hung out a lot but Zayn was still a little awkward around me. He ignored my texts for a while so I stopped texting. I went to open the door. I looked through the peephole and it was Harry.
I opened the door, immediately. I wondered what he needed so bad. "Harry, it's one o'clock. Is everything okay?" I asked, concerned. "No! It's Zayn!" he answered, catching on his breath. "What happened?" I asked, worried.
"I got a call from the hospital...I'm on his speed dial... He's met with an accident!" he said, "will you please come with me? I don't wanna go alone!"
"I'll just take my phone and come," I replied, grabbed my phone and went to the hospital with him.
By the time we reached, Liam was already there. Harry had informed the other boys.
"How's he?" Harry asked, tears forming in his eyes.
"They're operating him. He's pretty bad. He's left arm is probably broken and his head was bleeding and there were glass shreds stuck on different... places... in his body," Liam informed us, trying not to break down.
"He was driving back from Louis' place and this truck hit him on a dark road but the driver called the ambulance," he further told us and we listened like statues.
Louis and Niall rushed in and started asking Liam the same questions while Harry just moved away from there and sat on a seat.
I noticed him and went to sit next to him. I placed my hand on his, "Harry, are you okay?"
"He can't... no..." he mumbled.
"Harry, look at me, it's gonna be okay, he'll be fine..."
"You can't promise that!" Harry shouted, jerking my hand away. Then he covered his face and started sobbing.
"He's been my best friend since we were kids! He can't leave me alone now!" he said from his tears and I don't know why but my heart started breaking.
I got on my feet and sat on the floor, in front of him. "Harry, I know I can't promise anything but we can only hope for the best," I said, gently holding his shoulder.
He removed his hands from his face and looked at me in the eyes. "I want to but I don't want to loose my best friend," he said, hurt written all over his face.
"You don't have to, your best friend is a fighter, have faith in him," I tried to reassure him.
He pulled me into a hug and held on to me for a long time. I could feel his tears on my shoulders and it was getting hard for me to be strong.
He finally let go of me and I went to sit next to him. He held my hand and slowly rested his head on my shoulder.
"Please don't leave," he said as he looked up at my face.
"I'm right here," I reassured him.
The light of the theatre went off and all of us got up on our feet. The doctor came out and gave us the news.
"He is better than what we thought it'd be," he said but we wanted to know more.
"His left arm is broken but it'll be okay in a month. We had to put seven stitches on his forehead and a few stitches here and there for all the places pierced by glass and he is not in a condition to talk to anyone because he needs complete rest for 12 hours so I suggest you guys come to meet him tomorrow afternoon."
The doctor had finished giving us the information and we were all just happy that he was alive and not even comatosed. "If you want, one or two of you can stay here tonight. Tomorrow's a Sunday anyways," Dr. Jeffords added.
We all looked at each other and Harry volunteered first, "I'll stay here!"
"I'll stay with him!" I said, immediately.
"That's fixed then," Dr. Jeffords said, "he'll be moved to a ward tomorrow morning," and he walked away.
"Okay guys, take care," Liam said and the boys left. Harry and I sat there in silence for a while then he decided to break it.
"Hey Maya, I'm sorry for all that drama before," he said, still not looking directly at me.
"You don't have to be sorry, it was fine. I understand Zayn's your best friend," I replied with a smile.
"Yeah, more like my brother," he said, smiling back at me.
"Then it's totally justified why you reacted like that."
"It's just that Zayn's been my friend since we were in 4th grade and he's seen me go through the most difficult times of my life. The other boys became our friends in high school but Zayn and I've been friends for as long as I can remember."
"It's okay. I totally get it. Not that I've had friends like this but still I'm trying."
"You don't have memorable childhood friends from India?" he asked, surprised.
"I've had friends but I never had that constant friend. I'd always be friends with different people in different school years. The only constant friend in my life is my sister and my grandfather was."
"I don't know if that's sweet or sad."
"It's kinda both," I said and we giggled a little.
"Thanks for brightening my mood," he said and I smiled at him.
We sat there, silently for a few minutes before I started falling asleep.
I woke up the next morning and could feel something under my head. I rubbed my eyes and looked up. It was Harry. He was sleeping while sitting, his head laid back on the wall. I was lying on the seats, my head comfortably rested on his legs.
As soon as I thought of getting up, Harry woke up.
"Good morning," he said, rubbing his eyes.
"Good morning," I replied, still lying down.
"Why did you sleep like that? You could've used the seats next to these," I asked.
"I was gonna do that but you were being uncomfortable because there was nothing under your head and kept muttering something in Hindi. So, I assumed you needed a pillow," he replied with a shy smile.
"Thanks. That's really sweet but you really didn't have to," I replied.
"It's okay, I wasn't uncomfortable."
I sat up when we saw Dr. Jeffords.
"Good morning you two," he greeted us and we greeted back.
"I was actually thinking of waking you up but it seemed peaceful how you both were sleeping," he said, "ahh, young love."
We both blushed real hard. Why did he just assume?!
"We're not in love or something," I corrected him.
"Then that's too bad. Anyways, we shifted Zayn to the ward while you two were sleeping. You can meet him after two in the afternoon," he said.
"Great, we'll just grab some breakfast then," Harry said.
"Yeah, just go on a small breakfast date. Your friend is fine, anyways," said Dr. Jeffords.
"It's not a date. We're not dating," I corrected him again.
"But if you aren't then why was he taking..." Dr. Jeffords started speaking.
"I'm very hungry. Thank you Dr. Jeffords for everything. See ya later!" saying that Harry grabbed my hand and dragged me to the lift.
"Why didn't you let the doctor finish?" I asked him as we waited for our breakfast to be served. We came to this nearby cafe because we really didn't like anything in the hospital cafeteria.
"Because I'm really hungry. Could they at least serve the coffee?" Harry said, trying to avoid the topic.
I shrugged and looked into my phone. 9 missed calls from dad since morning!!! Holy crap! "Harry, I'll be right back. Need to make a call," I said and he nodded so I ran out and called dad.
Why the hell did he call me when it was 4 a.m. in India. Is everything okay?
He picked up the call. "Hey Maya, I called you a bunch of times an hour ago. Hadn't you woken up?" he said. "Yeah, I was.. sleeping, sorry," I answered and it wasn't completely untrue.
"I couldn't sleep so I called to check on you."
"You don't have to check on me Dad. I'm old enough to take care of myself," I protested.
"Yes, that's why I let you go there. I'm thinking that why don't we go there when Manisha's on her winter vacation," he said.
As much as I missed them, I didn't want my parents to come. Manisha is fine but my parents can be very annoying and not let me live the way I am now. But there's no way I could tell them that.
"That's cool, dad. Just see if you can adjust work on Manisha's vacation," I said with little excitement.
"Hey Maya, sorry to interrupt but I think we should head home," said Harry from behind and all I could hope for was that my dad didn't hear it.
"Maya, where are you and who's talking to you?" my dad asked with an accusing tone.
"Nobody dad! And I really need to go. I just woke up. So, bye!" saying that I hung up and let out a deep breath.
"What... happened?" Harry asked me, thoroughly confused.
"That was my dad on call. Whatever. Let's go?"
"Yeah, let's go," said Harry, still confused.
We reached and stopped at the hallway. "Hey, can I ask you something?" he asked me when I was unlocking my door.
"Yeah sure, go on," I replied.
"Why did you hang up on your dad like that?"
"I can't tell him I spent a night in a hospital for a dude with another dude."
"Why can't you?" he asked, not getting what I meant.
"It's very complicated. I'm very Indian. At least my family is."
"It really is complicated," he said with a smile, "we'll go to the hospital at 2,okay?"
"Cool."
Harry entered his apartment and was shocked to see someone in there before him.
"Holy shit, Liam! What are you doing at my place? I gave you a key for emergencies," Harry exclaimed.
"I was feeling very low about the whole Zayn situation," Liam replied and Harry went to sit next to him.
"He's okay man. We're going to meet him at 2 today, okay?" Harry tried to make Liam feel better.
"Dude, I know it's not the time for this but I gotta ask you something," Liam said.
"Sure, ask me anything."
"How do you ask a girl out when she has rejected you for at least four times a week?" Liam asked, looking at Harry expectantly.
"I don't know... I've never been there," Harry replied.
"Okay so, you know, I like Lana but I've tried asking her out four times this week and she's turned me down every time!"
"That's because you do it very casually so she doesn't take you seriously and even if she wants to go out with you, she might also want to be just friends."
"Why are girls so complicated?" Liam asked, hopelessly.
"Because they fear guys are gonna screw up like most times," Harry answered and Liam nodded.
"Umm Liam, what do you do if your feelings for someone suddenly change like the weather?" Harry asked.
"Well, keep changing or just switch from hate to friendship to something more?" Liam said, confidently and Harry looked at him, stumped.
"C'mon Harry, you've been looking at her like she just fell from heaven for the past few weeks."
"Hey, I don't look at Maya like she fell from heaven or something!" Harry protested.
"I didn't even take her name," Liam said with a smirk.
"Okay fine! I like her and I don't think she does!"
"Welcome to the club, mate," Liam said and both the boys sighed.
At 2 p.m. I was ready to go meet Zayn. I was waiting in the hallway for Harry. He came out of his apartment.
"Let's go?" I asked and he smiled.
We reached the hospital and Harry stopped me right before we entered Zayn's room.
"Let's wait for the boys," he said and I nodded because they'll be here any minute.
We sat on the seats and I was looking at the ground in silence.
"Hey listen," he said. "Yeah what?" I asked and that's when the other boys interrupted us.
"Guys, you waiting for us?" Louis asked and I nodded. "We're here now so let's go in," Niall said.
We entered the ward and Zayn was leaning on his back, sitting upright.
"Hey guys, what took you so long?" he asked, smiling.
"What the fuck, man!" Louis said, "this looks bad!"
"Shut up, Louis!" Liam reprimanded him, "how you feeling man?"
"Have been better but could've been worse too," Zayn replied.
"Dude, never scare us like that again, please," Harry said and Zayn nodded with a smile.
I started to move back. I wanted to give the boys some space. They're best friends after all.
The doctor came in after a while. "Hey kids. Now listen, these are some medicines that he'll need. Someone go and get them," said Dr. Jeffords.
"I'll get 'em," saying that Harry took the prescription and went out.
"That's all I had to say. You guys can stay here for another hour," saying that Jeffords walked out.
"Umm Maya," Zayn said and I was taken back, he was avoiding me for days.
"Yeah," I said, walking towards his bed.
Liam was sitting on the seat but got up for me to sit there. I smiled at him and took the seat and Zayn held my hand.
"You've noticed that I've been avoiding you for a few weeks?" he asked.
"Everyone did," I replied.
"It's because I was running away from somethings that I didn't want to feel," said Zayn and I was shocked. I just sat there, frozen.
"I started liking you, a lot, maybe too strong and I was trying to kill those feelings by pushing you away."
I stopped thinking. I couldn't believe the words that came out of his mouth.
"But as much as I pushed you away, my feelings kept increasing. I don't think you feel the same but I'd really appreciate it if you said something," he said, looking at me with expectation.
I didn't know before but this was the moment I was waiting for all these days. I stopped thinking logically, entirely. I slightly got up from my seat, leaned in and kissed him. He didn't kiss me back at first, maybe he was shocked, but then he gave in.
We finally let go of each other when we heard someone say, "what's going on?"
It was Harry. I was so preoccupied, I didn't even notice when he entered.
"Zayn finally told Maya he likes her and they're together now, I guess," Louis said and Harry stood there, frozen still.
"Harry?" Liam asked looking for a reaction.
"Well, that's-that's great! Zayn always liked her. Just I couldn't see. I'm so happy for you two!" Harry said with a smile.
"Thanks bro," Zayn said, smiling back.
"Oh shit! I forgot to get one medicine. I'll just get it," saying that Harry left the room and Liam followed him out.
Louis and Niall looked at each other and went out as well.
After they were all gone, Zayn and I were left in the room. "Hey listen," he said and I nodded, he was still holding my hand.
"I didn't want to say this on front of the boys but Maya," he paused.
"Yes Zayn, what?" I asked, softly.
"I think I'm falling in love with you."
End of chapter. Pleaseee tell me how you liked it. If you want Harry and Maya then don't worry, there's possibility for that as well. Tell me which one you want. XoXo.
