Nick. Jack, Rose and Gatsby are finishing breakfast. Soon Herzog appears, "Mr. Gatsby sir, excuse me, Chicago calling sir."

"Now now. Keep it open. For a personal call..."

"A personal call? Of course." Herzog says, with a slight shock. The gardener comes to the foot of the steps.

"I'm going to drain the pool today, Mr. Gatsby."

"Not today. It's so beautiful." He then turns to Nick, and to his cousin, "You know, old sport, I've never used that pool all summer?" Gatsby enthusiastically heads down the stairs... "Let's go for a swim. I'll have the phone transferred to the pool..." Jack and Rose looked at each other excitedly. Finally, something different. As Gatsby heads toward the pool, Nick checks his watch...

"Jay, I've got to go. I have to work."

"I understand... Well, I'll walk you out." Gatsby leads Nick toward the side gate, while Jack and Rose prepared to meet Gatsby by the pool. At the gate, Nick turned, "I'll call you up."

"Do, old sport, please do, "Gatsby paused, a thought, "I suppose Daisy'll call too."

"I suppose so... Well... Goodbye." Nick lingers... Then they shake hands and he starts away. Just before he reaches the hedge he turns back and calls: "They're a rotten crowd! You're worth the whole damn bunch put together!" First Gatsby nods politely, and then his face breaks into that radiant and understanding smile.

"I was always glad I said that... It was the only compliment I ever paid to Gatsby."

...

At the Probity Trust Building, Nick, tired, sick-looking, and it was that morning, Wall Street had boomed, its usual golden roar... But it wasn't worth a decent stroke of work, while Nick waited for Gatsby to call with news...

Gatsby heads for the pool, to join Jack and Rose, ready to swim... With Jack and Rose watching, Gatsby dives gracefully into the pool. We see Gatsby from below, body gliding through clear water. Meawhile at the Buchanan mansion. Daisy, considering the phone, a white telephone on a ivory plinth.

...

A gun dangles from a hand. Wilson's scarecrow shadow ripples across the lawn.

...

Gatsby's head breaks the smooth, green surface of the water. Suddenly, the phone rings... Gatsby smiles at his cousin, and gazes across toward the green light, toward Daisy. Atop the monumental stairs, Wilson, raises a gun. Gatsby - a moment of strangled, startled, wonder... His lips form a final, breathless... Then his face hardens as he slowly falls backwards... Jack and Rose scream, witnessing this agonizing horror in front of them. Everything became a slow motion now. Out of nowhere, Jesse came running to Gatsby's aid, who quickly took off his coat, then dived into the water to retrieve Gatsby, followed by another gunshot somewhere. A silent image of Rose crying, and Jack screaming, while Jesse fights all he can to save one of Jack's last remaining family member...

At the Probity Trust building, a silent image of Nick screaming into the phone.
