Monday, October 2nd
1am at the Brady home—
Everyone but Jan was asleep, she had woken up a half hour earlier, tossing and turning as she didn't feel like going back to sleep. She got up, took her books with her, went downstairs to the family room, closed the shutters and went over her math book since she had a test that morning.
6am—
Everyone but Jan woke up then got dressed, Marcia and Bobby went downstairs. Marcia went in the den, but found it empty, then went to the kitchen when she saw Alice.
"Alice, have you seen Jan?" Alice took out some bread then looked at Marcia.
"No, I haven't," Carol walked in the kitchen then Alice continued, "She wasn't upstairs?"
Carol interrupted, "Who wasn't upstairs?"
"Jan, she wasn't in her bed when Cindy and I got up," Marcia said as Greg and Peter came down.
"Maybe she ran away," Bobby suggested as everyone looked at him.
"Who ran away?" Greg asked as Mike also came down.
"Why would she run away?" Marcia asked.
"Because she has a test today," Bobby said as he took drink.
"No, she isn't afraid of a silly math test, she will ace it," Marcia said then continued, "Jan wasn't in her room when we got up. I checked the den and she wasn't there,"
"Did you check the family room? I see the shutters are closed," Mike said.
"No, I didn't even notice it," Marcia said as Carol went in the family room and saw Jan asleep on the couch.
Carol sat on the couch, shook Jan awake. "Jan, how long have you been here?" Marcia opened the shutters as Mike stood in the doorway.
Jan rubbed her eyes, saw her mom, dad, then Marcia, "I'm not sure what time is it?"
"6:30, you go upstairs and get ready for school, I will have breakfast ready for you to eat," Carol said then after Jan left to get dressed, she walked in the kitchen and helped Alice with making lunches.
"She's ready for that test," Mike said as he walked over to the counter to pour coffee in his cup then walked to the table and sat down while the kids ate.
After Jan had breakfast, she and the kids went off to school while Mike finished breakfast, kissed Carol goodbye then went to work.
At Mike's office 11am—
Mike was at his desk when Mr. Phillips walked in and stood in front of it.
"Morning Mike."
"Morning, Mr. Phillips." They both looked at each other.
"The Bramingtons want to thank the company for helping designing the structure that is finished and showing their appreciation they have a get together on Friday night. You should get an invitation in the mail by Wednesday. They have made it employees only so I hope Mrs. Brady won't be too upset about not being invited."
"I'm sure she will be fine with-it Mr. Phillips. I will be watching out for that invitation." Mike smiled.
"I hope so Mike," Mr. Phillips said, walking out while closing the door.
Tuesday October 3rd after school-
Jan didn't sleep well last night as she felt she only got a few hours of sleep, came home to exciting news she shared with Carol who was watching TV.
"Mom!" Carol looked up to see Jan closing the sliding door walking up to her. "I got an A+ on that math test from yesterday!"
"Oh, that's great honey."
"I'm going to go do some homework upstairs." Jan left to go upstairs while the other kids came home.
After Mike got home, he and Carol sat on the couch in the living room.
"I have an event to go to Friday night. Remember the Bramingtons, who wanted us to do the sketches for their building?"
"Yeah?" Carol looked at him.
"They have a party for us on Friday and its only employees who can go."
"Oooh… I guess you are going," Carol teased Mike. "What time is it?"
"Yes. It is from 8pm until 10."
Dinnertime—
Alice called the family to dinner; Marcia and Cindy came from the family room; the boys came down from their room and they sat at the table.
"Where's Jan?" Carol asked.
"She was doing homework when Marcia and I came down to play checkers," Cindy said.
"I'm sure she didn't hear Alice," Mike said then continued, "I'll get her."
"Okay, we have cake in the fridge if anyone wants it after dinner," Alice said.
Outside the girls' room, Mike knocks on the door then opens it, "Jan?" He saw her with her head down on the desk as he walked to her chair and shook her and called her. "Jan?"
Jan woke up then asked in irritation, "What is it Dad?"
Mike stood back, "its dinnertime, honey." He didn't like how she reacted at all.
"Already? I just got home."
"You've been home for a while; you must have fallen asleep."
Mike stood beside Jan as she pushed the chair back to get up, "do you feel okay, honey?" Mike felt her forehead.
"Yes. I'm hungry." Jan left to go have dinner and Mike followed.
Everyone noticed Jan looked like she had woken up.
"What subject were you reading to make you fall asleep? History?" Bobby asked as he laughed.
"No it was not! Leave me alone!" Jan snapped as Mike sat in his seat.
"Okay, enough, finish your dinner." Carol said as she looked at Jan who started eating. Carol looked at Mike who noticed her looking at him and shrugged his shoulders.
After dinner, Alice offered cake to which Jan declined and went to her room and the family wondered what was going on with her.
Wednesday October 4th—
Fillmore Jr. High—
Jan listened to her teacher, Ms. Longago who was talking about history but Jan fell asleep. After a few minutes Ms. Longago noticed Jan and called out to her.
"Jan! Jan!" she called out to her then shook her awake.
"What?" Jan snapped.
"You need to stay awake," she walked to the front.
"I am awake!"
Over the next two days Jan would have a hard time staying awake in class as she fell asleep in them, the family noticed a big change in her.
Friday October 6th—
After school let out, Marcia and Cindy got home first and spoke to Carol.
"Do you girls know what is going on with Jan?"
"No," Marcia and Cindy told her.
"You two aren't fighting with her?"
"No," Cindy said as Marcia shook her head.
"I have noticed she does seem really tired in the morning," Marcia said.
"Yes, I have noticed that," Carol said as Greg and Bobby walked in and she called out to them, "boys, do you know what is going on with Jan?"
"No," Bobby said as Greg shook his head.
The kids went upstairs; Peter came home awhile after Mike did and was told he was needed in the den. Marcia and Cindy were doing their homework in the family room; Alice went upstairs to put the towels away while Jan came home through the front door feeling tired, slowly walked upstairs to her room and fell on her bed.
Mike and Carol sat on the chairs while they spoke to Peter.
"Do you know what is going on with Jan?"
"I haven't talked to her about what's bothering her, but I did talk to some of her friends and she told them that she has trouble sleeping,"
Mike and Carol looked at each other, then at Peter. Mike asked, "Anything else?"
"She's been falling asleep in class and getting detention because of it and being disrespectful to the teachers,"
Carol sat forward, "Is she being bullied?"
"No,"
"Thank you, Peter," Mike said then Peter left closing the door.
"Oh, Mike, maybe I'll call the doctor and see if they can get an appointment with her next week and I will call them right now since they are still open."
"Wait, maybe this is just insomnia. I get that sometimes," Mike said, "let's wait awhile and see if things work out first."
11pm—
Alice and the kids were asleep, Mike wasn't home yet, Carol fell asleep on the couch in the living room as she was waiting for Mike to come home.
Then screams were heard in the whole house.
