"NO! Get away! Go away! !" she screamed.

Greg got out of his bed when he heard his sister scream, pushed the sliding door more open as it was ajar, then as he crossed the bathroom, opened the girls' door and ran over to Jan. Cindy stayed in her bed while Marcia turned on the light when Greg shook his sister awake.

"Jan! It's okay, you are having a nightmare," Greg sat on the side of her bed, facing her as she finally woke up. Peter and Bobby stood in the doorway leading from the girl's room to the bathroom.

Marcia sat on her bed, facing Jan, "What were you dreaming about?" Cindy sat up while looking towards Jan. Carol and Alice came into the room.

"Is everything okay?" Carol asked as the kids noticed she had fallen asleep in her clothes as she sat next to Jan.

"Yeah, I just had a nightmare," Jan said as Alice said goodnight to everyone.

"Oh honey. What was it about?" Carol asked as she gave Jan a hug.

"Someone was just chasing me, he sounded like dad and was a maniac," Jan said.

"Speaking of Dad, where is he?" Greg asked.

"I'm not sure, he—" Carol started then they looked towards the door that opened. Mike walked in.

"Hi, what's going on?" Mike asked as he looked tired.

"Just a nightmare, I'd like to go back to sleep," Jan said then she yawned.

The boys went back to their room, the girls slipped in their beds, Mike and Carol went to their room.

After they put their pajamas on, they slipped under the covers then settled in. Carol faced him as he turned off the light, then laid down and faced her.

"I was getting worried about you." Carol slightly rubbed Mike's cheek.

"I love you, sweetheart," Mike said as he and Carol kissed then went to sleep.

October 7th

After Jan slept in and had breakfast, Mike summoned her to his den, she walked in to see Mike and Carol sitting on the chairs.

"Jan, are you angry at your brothers and sisters?" Carol asked.

"No." She looked at them.

"We have noticed you have seemed very tired in the morning, sleeping on the couch in the family room a few times, falling asleep just before dinner, we heard you had been sleeping in class and being disrespectful of your teachers." Carol continued then asked, "are you having trouble sleeping?"

Jan looked at them shocked then said, "Sometimes but its not a big deal, I can handle it," Jan said then continued, "the teacher was just getting on my nerves."

"If you feel tired when you come home, you should take a nap but not close to dinner, okay? Don't let this affect your schoolwork," Mike said then asked, "anyone bothering you at school?"

"No,"

"Okay, you can go now," Mike said. Jan left, closing the door.

Carol got up, went to the sofa, picked up her needlepoint and sat down while Mike got up and sat next to her.

"What do you think about Jan?"

"I don't know. Something is bothering her; I can just sense it. Since when is a teacher getting on her nerves? I meant to ask you, what happened last night?"

"Mr. Phillips car got stolen so he filed a report and I took him home," Mike said.

"Oh," Carol said shocked as she started on her needlepoint.

"You didn't hear this from me, I wonder if he found his car yet," Mike got up, walked to the sketching table and looked at the sketches he had finished.

Jan was able to get a good night's sleep over the weekend, Mike found out Monday that Mr. Phillips car was returned to him as someone had made a mistake about the car; Jan's sleeping issues came back Monday night and continued through the week.

Friday October 13th at Fillmore Jr. High after school—

"Hey Pete!" Peter's friend called out to him.

"Yeah?" Peter turned towards him.

"What is going on with Jan? Something or someone is really bugging her. She had detention yesterday and is in detention today. I saw your parents earlier today talking to some of the teachers."

"I don't know. I've asked her friends and they don't know. Something is wrong but she just isn't talking. What room is she in?" Peter said then asked. The friend gave him the room number and Peter went to that room and saw only a few students; Jan was sleeping.

"Hello, Ms. Earnest, I'm not in detention but my sister is here. Can I sit down," Peter asked?

"Detention is almost over anyways, so sure," she said then five minutes later she said, "detention is over. Which is your sister?"

"The sleeping one," Peter said as everyone but him and Jan left. He walked over to Jan, sat next to her then shook her awake. "Jan, wake up."

Jan woke up to an empty class, "What? Pete?" Jan looked confused.

"Yeah, a friend of mine told me you were here and I thought maybe I'd walk home with you. Jan, whatever is bothering you, you really need to tell us."

"I don't want mom to know," Jan said.

"My friend told me that he saw mom and dad so I'm not sure that will be possible, Let's go to the ice cream parlor and maybe we can talk there." They both stood up.

"Okay." They both left the school and went to the ice cream parlor.

After they got the ice cream parlor, got their ice cream then sat on the chairs.

Jan took a bite, "there is a substitute teacher who looks so much like someone my late father knew and I was 8 when I last saw him."

"Did the guy hurt you?"

"No, he just scared me and Marcia with his screaming. He was a real jerk to my mom though. He was worse than my late dad and they both were alcoholics. He was in the car with my dad the night he died in the accident."

"Never heard what happened to him?" Peter asked.

"I thought he survived but stayed away."

Peter looked at the clock, "Why don't we go to the library? I'm sure they have something on that accident." Jan agreed.

After they finished, they went to the library to do some research then found what they were looking for.

"Looks like he died but I didn't realize he was that old. That teacher really does look like him." Jan said.

After Peter got a book he needed to check out, he called Greg to have him pick them up and take them home.

At the Brady home—

Mike was in the living room reading the paper while Carol and Jan talked in the den with the shutters closed. They sat on the chairs.

"Your father and I spoke to your teachers and the substitute. They are getting frustrated and are ready to send you to the principal's office if you keep having these problems."

"Did you think the sub looked familiar?" Jan asked her.

"Yes, I did think he looked familiar but its not who you-." Carol started then stopped. "oh Jan?"

"I did think it was him but didn't want to upset you so I just tried not to let it bother me but I guess it really did. Pete and I went to the library to see if there is an article on the crash. I didn't know he died weeks later," Jan said.

"I know your regular teacher will be back and I hope the sleeping issues are resolved because if they aren't, I'm taking you to the doctor, okay?

Jan said as she got up, "Okay mom." They both left the den.

The family ate then Greg's friend, Fred Gottlieb picked him up to take him to Westdale so he could ride with the team to their away game against Abraham Lincoln High. Fred was allowed to be near the locker rooms for the visiting team when a man approached him.

"Hello, are you a football player?" Andrew Dale asked.

"No, I'm a friend of one of the players," Fred said.

Andrew took out a piece of paper to give to Fred, "There are some players who get hurt and maybe you can give this to your friend if he doesn't want to get benched because of his injury. Here is the practice and the name of my boss.

Fred, shocked, took the piece of paper, "Thanks." The men went their separate ways, Fred did have a bad feeling about it, folded the paper and put it in his pocket.

4th quarter—

The quarterback threw the ball to Greg who caught it, then got slammed down to the ground, hard.

"Ahhhh!"
