Derek leaves Bailey's office. She gave him an answer and found a way for the surgery to be performed without committing fraud. Derek is like in a daze, he's shocked. Patty is alone, her parents have abandoned him. How do you tell him that? Derek promised to never hurt her there and to be honest. Derek walks slowly alone in a hallway, he runs his hand through his hair nervously. He hears noises not behind him, he turns around.
Meredith is there behind him.
-It's okay ? Patty's parents are coming back?
Derek is silent for a few seconds, he sighs.
-No
Meredith doesn't understand.
-How do they not come back?
-It costs them too much. They cannot pay for care and scheduled surgery. It's over, they don't want her anymore. Patty is alone. She has no one left.
Derek almost has tears in his eyes, his face expressing infinite sadness and immense anger.
Meredith hugs Derek. She is deeply shocked.
-How do we tell her that? I promised to tell him the truth how do I tell her that?
Meredith tightens her embrace. Patty is smart, innocent, and really, really funny. Patty makes Meredith rethink her childhood. Patty looks a lot like her. This resemblance disturbs her deeply, the abandonment of Patty by her parents makes her in a mad rage and this abandonment brings back to Meredith memories of her painful childhood.
After their embrace, Meredith and Derek return to the titular rest room. Patty is on the sofa, playing with Felix. She seems so happy, her happiness hurts Meredith and Derek because they have to shatter her happiness. Patty turns her face towards them, immediately she realizes that something is wrong. She hugs her bear Felix against her chest. Derek and Meredith walk over to Patty, they sit across from her.
-Where are my parents? What's going on ?
-I promised to be honest with you and to tell you the truth. I went to your aunt katie and met your parents.
-They are fine ?
-Yes, they're fine. I spoke to them. They asked me to tell you that they love you, but they won't come back.
Patty doesn't understand. They won't come back ? But won't they be back soon? She tightens her bear a little more.
-What? I don't understand Derek. They will come back one day, it is not possible, they cannot leave me alone!
Patty starts to sob, tears start to roll down her cheeks.
Derek is heartbroken at Patty's tears.
-Patty, I would like to answer you that. You don't know how much, I would like. They won't come back. You are not alone, Meredith and I, we will not be there for you. You will have your operation, I promise. As long as you are here in this hospital, we will not be there for you.
Patty bursts into tears and takes refuge in Derek's arms, Meredith strokes Patty's hair.
