Hello, my beautiful creatures! I just realized I haven't updated this story in a long while so here I am while I'm also writing a new chapter for Fully Human. I'm working on trying to remake the storyline I had for this originally because now it feels rather... Wrong? I don't know how to say it to be honest, but an update on this might be a far way out.
I hope you guys enjoy this though! Much love!
"Why do I have to be the one all decked out in dark clothes?" I smiled towards Claire as I handed a mask towards her.
"They know who I am as well as what I am. They won't be expecting someone by my side."
"Won't they figure it out sooner or later?" She gave me a raised eyebrow as she took my mask from me. In comparison to my blue and silver armor, she was starkly different from her black leggings, black shirt, and a black jumper on top of it. She placed the mask over her head but had it stop right over her eyebrows as I answered her.
"I would much rather it be later. Once they realize what you are, you'll be targeted much more than you already are." I placed my hands on her shoulders as I continued. "Once they realize you know a lot more than you let on, it'll be worse." This caused Claire to present me with a lopsided grin as she placed her hands on her hips.
"I know what I signed up for." She reached up and nudged my chin slightly with the knuckle of her index finger. "No matter what comes my way." I smiled towards her as I dropped my hands from her.
"Have I told you yet that your determination might be the death of me?" This only caused her to flash me a wide smile as she placed her hands in her pockets.
"You wouldn't be the first one." I shook my head slightly as I felt myself bite my lip slightly as she walked ahead of me.
How am I going to survive with this girl?
I shook my head once more as I started to jog after her. "You got the gaggletack?" She held out the horseshoe-shaped totem with a smile.
"Way ahead of you, Atlas." We walked out into the moonlight as the doorway to Troll Market closed behind us while I smiled over to the young woman by my side.
"Then let's begin."
I jumped up and grabbed the side of the museum with ease before pulling myself up to the roof. I lent out my hand towards Claire who was able to grab it with ease as I helped her climb the side of the wall. We stepped lightly together over to the museum's side window before I dropped down and cupped my hands together to help her through it. We gave each other a nod since her face was masked since we arrived at the building. She placed her right foot into my hands before I raised her slightly to meet the beginning of the window. She pulled on it lightly to open it before she pulled herself through it with relative ease. I waited a few seconds before following after her to make sure that I wouldn't land on her. I landed on my toes as my left hand stabled myself before I raised to my feet.
"Alright. Stay close." Claire gave me a nod before pulling out the little cylinder that was her staff. I took light steps towards the front side of the building as I glanced behind me every now and again to make sure she was still behind me. Once we came around the painting and dress we have seen on our trip here, I saw that there were lights streaming from the construction area. With one look over to Claire, it was obvious that she understood what I was thinking as we started our way down the stairs. We walked slowly towards the covers of the hidden area as we went over to the right side where there were a bit more shadows to hide within. I moved the curtain slowly to make sure that we didn't make too much noise. From what was supposed to be a new showcase being built was instead filled with aisles of shelves filled with crates. I felt a hand place itself on my left shoulder which caused me to look over to the fellow teenager. I didn't need to see her face to see that she was confused by the sight before us. But from my history with the Janus Order, I was used to their ability to hide in plain sight.
"Ready?" I spoke in a whisper toward Claire which caused her to give my shoulder a re-ensured squeeze which gave me the answer I needed. I stepped out and held the curtain for her so she could sneak through the opening before placing it slowing back into place. I took Claire gently by the arm and flattened myself up against the wooden sides of the shelves. I leaned my head slightly over the side to make sure there weren't any changelings in the aisle as I felt Claire kept herself close to me. I found myself placing a hand on her back to make sure we were staying close enough for the two of us hid in the same shadow but not close enough to trip over one another. I kept my eyes on the inside of the aisle as we went across swiftly to the next shelf to do the same thing. We repeated this a few times until we saw a slightly large crowd before a gap between them and a person before them with their back shown to us. The brown jacket I saw a glimpse of gave away to me exactly who it was before them. I felt Claire leave from me slightly as she bent down and stepped slowly towards the next cabinet shelf before standing straight up and using the gap between some of the crates on that shelf to see what they were speaking to before making her way back toward me.
"They're speaking to a circle with a green aura before a giant stone bridge. Is that the Killahead Bridge you were speaking of?"
"Must be. Are there any missing pieces?" She shook her head instantly.
"Not a single thing missing. Other than a circle piece in the center of the side of it." I took a deep breath before realizing it slowly.
"Did you see the figure that they were speaking to within the aura?"
"It was hard to make out from this distance. It was a dark figure within it." I nodded my head before leaning over the side once more to scan over the people within the crowd. There were few that I knew from their human forms well, but there were quite a few that I didn't recognize.
This is going to be rather difficult. There is a lot more to this than I originally thought.
I sighed lightly as I leaned my head back against the side of the shelf, feeling the wooden siding of this one specifically tap lightly against my skull.
What now? They are using a fetch to speak to possibly Gunmar. They already have all the pieces to Killahead. I might have felt like I knew exactly what we needed to do, but now that it's all before me, I have no idea of what plan. What could we do? Besides stealing a piece, but how could we? I know the Janus Order more than anyone in the world. They will be protecting their leader's captivity like it's the vault to a priceless jewel. The only thing we have in our corner is the amulet. The amulet they will kill me in my sleep for.
I felt hands place themselves on the sides of my face and it brought me back into reality as I saw Claire's masked face before me as she whispered to me.
"We'll figure this out. We need to speak to Blinky and AAARRRGGHH." I nodded as she brought her hands back from my face as she pulled me away slightly from the shelf. "Let's go then." We walked carefully back towards where we came from and we got there without a problem.
Or at least we thought.
"Did someone hear that?" I looked over to Claire and pulled the curtain as quickly as possible.
"Head towards the way we got in as quickly as possible."
"What about you?" I gave her a cheeky smile as I looked behind us, seeing that there was a shadow approaching.
"I'll be right there. Trust me. I want to make sure none of them follow us." She nodded her head and started jogging her way towards the staircase leading towards the window we entered from. Glancing over her shoulder as she went.
Don't worry, Claire.
I pulled the amulet out of my pocket as swirls of blue flowed around my limbs with ease before armor replaced what used to be dark jeans and a blue jumper jacket.
I have Daylight on my side.
I smiled wickedly as I pulled my sword out from my back and held it within my hands, slashing with ease as the changeling came close. He didn't have enough time to react as he didn't even make a sound before turning to dust onto the ground.
One thing I'll always enjoy about changelings: There is never a gruesome scene when you kill one.
"If he is not back in more than a minute, Luis, go see if he's slacking."
"Of course, Stricklander." I took this as an opportunity to jog my way over to the staircase as the amulet dropped into my hand.
Another thing I always enjoyed about changelings: They always expect the worse out of their people. Leading to clean getaways.
Once I got to the open window, I placed the amulet back into my jeans pocket before leaping up and pulling myself through the opening to land on feet on the other side.
"Are you alright?" I smiled towards Claire as I placed a hand on her shoulder before walking by her.
"I will be. Now, let's get going. There's a lot we need to speak about to our friends." She nodded her head as we both jumped down to the ground below us. We grabbed the bikes that we had leaning up against the wall we climbed up beside the museum. We rode off as soon as we could. The wind being the music we listened to as it chilled the exposed skin of my forearms as the moon lit the way with ease.
"They have every piece. They have a fetch which makes more sense now than before."
"Due to the child?" I nodded my head.
"It's the only way of communication they have to the Darklands without opening Killahead." I looked over at Claire. "It's the reason why they use infants for familiars." I could see the tension that raised in her body as she seemed to try her best to calm herself down. She rubbed her biceps with the opposite hands as I reached out and rubbed the top spot of her back. I looked back towards Blinky who had a softened look on his stone-based flesh and face. "I have no clue what step we can make next, but I know we can't just sit around and wait." Blinky nodded at my statement.
"Agreed, Master Atlas. But, I might actually have an idea for what we shall do." I gave the slightly larger being curious eyes.
"And what would that be, Blinky?"
"Use our last upper hand against them."
"If you're saying to use Atlas as some kind of leverage, I'm already against this." I felt myself smile lightly as Claire's voice stood true. By Blinky's nervous look in his eyes, I could tell that the Latina had an angry look on her face.
Even though I had not been on the opposite end of her rage as of yet, her friends had told me stories. I can only hope I never will since it seemed to frighten a troll that is old enough to have seen the Battle of Killahead.
"Of course not, Fair Lady Claire! What I'm suggesting is the idea of giving them a false opportunity."
"Like a fake amulet." Blinky gave me a wide smile as he gave me a nod.
"Exactly." He went over and grabbed a book off of one of his several bookshelves. "If my memory is correct, the amulet must have your allowance." I nodded my head as I leaned over the counter he placed his book onto. Claire joined my side as Blinky set the book down with his lower set of hands while his upper hands opened the book and flipped through the pages. "Does the Janus Order know of this?"
"The only time it was ever close to being opened was when I was thirteen." I leaned on my elbows counter. "They never had all the pieces together though so they never bothered with me being thrown into opening it. They always said that it was my job to help them through it all but I think this was due to how they figured having the amulet among them was better than having it be a treat they had to hunt for."
"So maybe we can have it so that you misplace or give them a false one. Have them believe that you're tired of the duties of being the Trollhunter."
"But I have tried getting away from the amulet before. I chucked it off a cliff when I was fourteen but it just flew right back at me."
"Yes, but if it is given to someone with your consent, it won't go back to you."
"Then what would he do if they asked him about it?" I looked over to Claire who asked probably the most important question of all in this situation. I brought myself up and stood straight as I suddenly a memory drifted into my mind.
"I don't want anyone else to be harmed, Dad."
"All of those that you hold dear won't be harmed, Atlas. I can promise that."
"So Mom won't be hurt?"
"I won't let that happen."
"And Toby?" I knew from the silence he had as a reaction originally, I could tell he didn't care from my best friend in comparison to my mother. I knew he had a soft spot for Mom, but it wasn't something I was worried about at the moment.
"I'll tell them that I don't want anyone else to be harmed." I pulled my eyes away from Claire as I looked back towards Blinky. "It was my," I took a deep breath and released it lightly as I continued. "Weakness. At least that's what they called it."
"Compassion is the greatest power humanity wields. At least, in my personal belief." Blinky smiled at me as he continued. "I'll start making a replica. Do you already have someone in mind you would bring it to?"
"Might as well bring it to who it all began with." I smiled back towards the troll as I looked over to the slightly shorter teenager who placed a hand on my shoulder. I placed a hand over hers as I looked back towards Blinky with a determined gleam in my eyes.
"Let's bring them to an end."
