Keep Fighting – Chapter 7

I'm fine.

Later on, Dix knocked on the door, quietly saying Alex's name. Alex slowly rose from her position in front of the door, turning around to unlock it. Creaking slightly as the door opened, Alex looked to see Dix standing solitary, no one else in sight. Alex tried to smile, but knew it only looked fake to her friend.

"Are you okay?" Dix asked, stepping into the room. "Because if you need painkillers, we can get a medicine vial." She stood with her arms crossed, facing Alex as she sat on the bed.

"I'm fine." Alex stated. Lie she thought, avoiding her friends blazing blue-green eyes, "I'm just not feeling great," Not a lie. "But it's nothing that a good sleep can't fix." Probably a lie.

Looking worried, Dix slowly nodded. She turned towards the door, looking back and saying, "Come downstairs if you feel like it. Evie would love to play with you." With that Dix left the room, and Alex let out a long sigh, deciding minutes later to head downstairs to spend some time with the Ronnigan's.

When she looked into the loungeroom, Bear and Gammy looked up at her with concern. She smiled weakly in return, noticing that Johnny and Blake had disappeared. Dorothy had left to get some food and Evie was playing on the floor. Alex sat down with the others, trying to include herself in the conversations, but was too emotionally drained to contribute much. She spent the afternoon playing with Evie, or really just sitting there whilst Evie told Alex about her toys that she got for Kaldoras.

When it came to dinner time, Gammy brought out some of the leftovers from lunch which Alex barely touched. She pushed her food around her plate, the guilt filling her up so much that she could almost throw up. She wanted nothing more than to just go to bed and sleep, waking up tomorrow to realise she was back at the academy trying to fit in with the other students. After refusing dessert from Gammy, she basically ran back up the stairs to Johnny's room, flopping down on the bed before falling into a restless sleep.

Aven stabbed his knife, Vae'varka, into Xira once, twice, then three times, before pulling out his heart. Looking straight into Alex's eyes, he rose it to her, almost as a toast, before biting down into it. A blast erupted through the air, just as Kaiden tackled Alex to the ground, protecting her. She opened her eyes, breathing in Kaiden's sweet scent, but something was wrong. Everything was still. Too still. Kaiden was still on top of her, so Alex pushed lightly against him.

"Kaiden," she whispered. No response. "Kaiden!"

Pushing him off herself, he collapsed to the ground. Unmoving.

"Kaiden!" she yelled, cupping his cheeks and staring into his sapphire eyes. But they were empty.

Alex looked up to see Aven looking at her, the golden heart in his hand, blood dripping down his chin. In his other hand he held Vae'varka, which slowly rose above his head.

"You deserve this." He said and plunged the sword into her heart.

"Alex. Alex, get up." Someone was pleading.

Screaming. Someone was screaming. It took Alex a few seconds to realise it was coming from her.

She sat up in bed panting and shaking, sweat sticking to her clothes and sheets. She looked up to see Dix staring down at her, a worried look on her face.

"Are you ok?" She asks, sitting down next to her on the tangled blankets.

"I'm fine." She replies, quickly getting out of bed and running to the bathroom. She vomited the little dinner she ate last night, expelling the contents in her stomach until there was nothing left. Her body continued to quake, the shivers racking her body so much she had to clutch the toilet seat to remain upright. At some point, Dix had come in and held Alex's hair back for her, rubbing her on the back soothingly, until she was done.

They both headed downstairs, Alex grabbing a glass of water and sipping it slow, leaning on the bench for support.

"So, do you want to tell me about what just happened."

No. She didn't want to tell Dix what had happened. Even thinking about it brought a new wave of nausea. Clutching the bench behind her, she said;

"It was just a nightmare. It's nothing."

Raising an eyebrow in disbelief, she took Alex's shaking hands in hers.

"What's wrong?" she asked, so worried for her friend.

"Seriously, it was nothing." Alex replied.

Dix looked down before saying, "You're fiddling with your bracelet again. You always do that when you're upset."

She hadn't even known she was doing it. She moved her hands away, folding them in her lap.

"Do you want me to call Kaiden?" Dix offered.

"No," Alex said firmly, "Everything is fine." Except it wasn't. But she couldn't let her friends worry about her. She can't deal with anyone knowing.

"I'm going back to bed." She stated, marching up the stairs into the bedroom. She lay in her bed, cold shivers still travelling down her spine. She waited until Dix came back in, pretending to be asleep, until she heard her roommates steady breathing, signalling she was no longer awake. Alex sat up, turning one of the charms on her bracelet, watching the scene fold out in front of her.

Over and over she continued to watch the little memories of Kaiden's until she saw the sun stretch over the horizon, the light bleeding into the night sky. She lay back down, closing her eyes as she heard Dix get up and leave the bedroom. Her Meyarin hearing took in what was said as Dix knocked softly on Jordan's and Bear's door, asking Jordan to come with her. They both went down the stairs, out the front door, and into the garden, crisp and cool. The small gate creaked open, and they were gone…

Hey everybody. Long-time no see. I'm really sorry that it took me this long to update but I've had so much sport on and assignments have only just started! I've been trying to find time in between but it's been a bit difficult, but hopefully the next chapter will be out in the next couple of weeks. So, what do you reckon? How much will it take to break Alex?

Thank you to all the reviews and follows, it's been really appreciated! Anyways, see you soon!
