Virginia dozed off while she and her pokémon allies slept next to her. Her dream was of the final night before she left Hyrule. She and her sister were in their own beds, and Virginia was looking at the roof.
"Can't sleep?" Samantha whispered to her. Virginia looked back and sighed.
"…Sam, what's going to happen to us?" Virginia questioned her older sister.
"What do you mean? We'll stay in touch. We're best friends, right? We'll always be together."
"Are you sure? But…what if-"
"Ginny…here. Come here." Samantha got out of bed and walked to the balcony. Virginia followed her sister as she opened the door. "You see all those stars?"
"Former members of the royal family." Virginia said while Samantha smiled.
"If you ever get lonely, look at the stars. We might be far away, but I'll always be with you." Samantha hugged her sister. "Ginny…you're my best friend in the whole world. No matter where we are…I'm always with you." The current day Virginia watched with sadness in her eyes.
"Sam…I wish you were here." Her lip quivered and she quietly sobbed. Suddenly, she heard the sound of a door opening and her head snapped back and she hit it against the wall.
"Ah…" She winced as she rubbed the back of her head. K-9 and Zap were growling at the individual at the door.
"K-9, Zap, that's enough." Virginia spoke softly as she saw a dog standing at the door.
"I hate to do this, but all the other booths are full…do you mind?"
"Of course. K-9, make some room." Aqua was ready to pounce, but Virginia rubbed her back. "Easy, Aqua…he means no harm."
"Thank you." He sat down and gave a heavy sigh. "Man, what a show. That was a good showing."
"Were you in that town? I didn't see you."
"I was in the café. You didn't go?" He questioned her. Virginia's eyes grew big and she gasped.
"Are you…are you K.K. Slider?"
"I am."
"My sister is a huge fan…but, I…um…I've never heard you music. I'm sorry." She quickly apologized.
"Your sister? Where is she?" Virginia gulped and tried to think of some excuse for her sister.
"She's…ah…at home." She nervously smiled.
"Y-yeah. She…she's sick right now…and can't leave the house. But, you know, I don't suppose I could pay you for an autograph?"
"You could, but…" He took out a sheet of paper and a pen. "What's her name?"
"Sam. Er…Samantha."
"To Samantha…" He began writing. "Be sure to smile every day." He finished signing it and handed it to Virginia. "Free of charge. You can't expect me to charge a princess of Hyrule." Virginia's expression faded. "Tom and Mable told me about you."
"They did? So…does that mean I'm…I'm the first princess you've ever met?" She questioned.
"No, but you're the first person I've met from Hyrule."
"Well, I'm not as elegant as my mother. If you really want to meet the purest Hylian, you'd need to meet Queen Zelda."
"I have heard things about her…all good." He reassured the princess.. "I am curious though…why did you come all the way out here? We're pretty far from Hyrule."
"I want to explore, you know? I've never liked staying in a castle my entire life. I can't imagine life inside a dusty, old castle." She bit her bottom lip and gulped hard. "P-Please don't tell mother I said that." She begged. K.K. laughed.
"Your secret is safe with me." He reassured her. "Say…you want to hear a little song?"
"You'd really play something? For me?"
"Sure." He got his guitar out of his case and began tuning it. "You know, if you want to get some shuteye, I'll keep an eye out. Crimea is still about…two or three hours away. Get some rest. I'll wake you up when we arrive." He began strumming a soft melody and Virginia smiled as she fell back to sleep; holding Aqua in her arms as she fell asleep. This time, her dream was different. Virginia was in the Kalos region. She was studying different kinds of pokémon and she looked at her watch.
"Oh no! I'm going to be late!" She exclaimed and quickly ran back towards town. The nearest town was Lumiose City. Professor Sycamore waved to her, but Virginia handed him her notebook and she took off towards town. By the time Virginia got to where she wanted to go, there was an incredibly long line. Virginia's shoulders sagged and she quietly walked away.
'I really wanted to go…' She whined inside her head as she walked towards the nearest coffee shop.
"One hot chocolate, please. Oh! And whipped cream, please." Virginia requested. Her hot chocolate was delivered and she took a seat outside. She sighed and took a sip.
'Perfect.' She lightly smiled, but her smile faded when she thought about that line.
'You've seen it twenty times already…why are you so disappointed?' Virginia thought.
"Hey, cutie…what's a girl like you doing all by your lonesome?" Virginia looked up to see five shady looking guys admiring her. "You know, my friends would like a word with you, in private…if you know what I mean." He gave a smile that led Virginia to believe that this man was nothing but trouble.
"I…um…n-no th-than…thank you." Her hands started shaking with nerves; scared that they might hurt her.
"You know, maybe I wasn't asking." He said in a calmer, more aggressive tone. Virginia's eyes watered. She was going to cry because she wasn't strong enough to fend them off. Her sister was the strong one…her sister would always protect her.
"Excuse me, but you're in my spot." A feminine voice chirped from behind them. They parted ways and a woman stood at the end. She had beautiful light skin, pretty light brown hair, and a deep blue iris for her eye color. Next to her was a gorgeous looking sylveon. She pulled the chair out and took a seat. "If you don't mind, I'd like to properly catch up with my good friend."
"What's her name?" One of the guys asked.
"You don't need to know." She replied.
"How do we know that you're not pretending to be friends?" The woman looked at Virginia and then sighed.
"You boys are a little close for me. You mind taking a couple steps back?" She requested.
"I think we're good right here." The stranger sighed and pulled out a small glass.
"Sylveon…" She quietly whispered and tapped the glass she was holding. She set the glass on the opposite end of the table and the glass began to glow a light before shattering into a million tiny pieces. All eyes turned to them.
"What's going on-hey!" Officer Jenny pointed at the men and the five of them quickly bolted away with the police hot on their trail. Shortly after they left, a beautiful braixen and a smug looking pancham walked up to the table. Braixen set down a tray with four drinks and pancham was holding a bag of pokémon puffs. Braixen moved all the drinks in front of each of them and the stranger took a sip before giving a satisfying 'ah.'
"So, what's your name?" She asked the Hylian princess.
"E-excuse me?"
"Your name? I've seen you at my shows, but I don't know you. And since we're having coffee together, I figure I'd get to know your name."
"Oh my gosh! Your pokémon are so cute!" Virginia gushed. "I can't believe I'm seeing them up close. They're so cool!"
"Your name?" She questioned again with a more serious tone. "Please."
"I…V-Virginia. Virginia Hyrule." She took a sip of her drink and sat quietly.
"Virginia Hyrule. Isn't that one of those fancy kingdoms? Which would make you a princess, right?" Virginia nodded. "What's a princess doing out here? Aren't you supposed to have, like, a bajillion guards with you?"
"No, I…I want to work with pokémon. I want to study them and learn everything about them."
"And also attend my show as often as you can." The woman smirked. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you might actually be my biggest fan."
"Wh-what m-makes you s-say that?" Virginia nervously questioned.
"I don't think anyone…and I mean anyone has paid to see me perform twenty times." She replied. "The only person who has seen my show more than you is my mother."
"I…the way you move on stage…it's…I've never seen such fluidity before. You seem at ease. You're…you're so beautiful." Virginia gasped and covered her mouth with embarrassment. "Up there! You're so beautiful up there!"
"You think I'm beautiful?" She smiled and laughed. "Have you been here long?"
"Three months. There's so much I have yet to see." Virginia admitted.
"Then how about after tonight's show, I show you around Lumiose City? I don't have many female friends close to my age. I have a friend named Bonnie, but she's much younger than me."
"I didn't…I couldn't get…" Virginia looked down in shame.
"Couldn't get tickets?" She had a quizzical look on her face. "Well, fine. You'll just need to watch it backstage with me and then we'll go hang out."
"Really?" Virginia's face lit up. "Oh, that would be wonderful."
"Alright. Let's get going." She stood up and motioned for Virginia to follow her.
"Wait!" She held up a hand. "I've seen your show twenty times, but…I…I've never learned your name. You are just the Pokémon Performer. So, could you please…what is your name?"
"Serena. Serena Yvonne." She smiled and grabbed Virginia's hand. The present day Virginia weakly smiled at the memory.
"Serena…I'm sorry. I overreacted. I shouldn't have run. I…" She felt her body lurch forward and her head hit the wall again. "Gah!" She groaned with frustration as she rubbed the back of her head again.
"You're up." K.K. exclaimed. "We're here." K.K. informed her and the train slowed to a stop. Virginia looked outside and there wasn't a kingdom in sight.
"Wh-Where's the castle?" Virginia asked. "Did I miss my stop?"
"No, we're in Crimea. It was never going to the kingdom." K.K. explained. "The nearest town is a small village of Ohma. It's maybe fifty yards that way." He pointed towards the opposite direction of their window. "Safe travels, princess." Virginia got up and exited the train alongside her companions. The train took off and once the train left, Virginia saw the small village in the distance. She began walking in hopes to meet someone who might be able to help her. She arrived and it was quite a small village.
"Hello, traveler." An older man waved to her. She smiled and waved back at the man. She approached him as he continued plowing the fields.
"What are you planting?" She asked the man.
"I'll be planting tomato seeds over there. That field over there has carrot seeds, and I've got some corn planted over there." He smiled. "It's honest work, yes sir." Virginia smiled after listening to him talk.
"You sound quite busy. I'll be out of your hair…but, could you point me in-"
"Medic! We need a medic!" A man yelled while he ran into the village. "Brom! Where's that healer guy?"
"You mean Rhys? He's taking a nap over there. What's going on?"
"We found this lady in a field just over there. She's badly hurt. She needs a medic." Virginia looked in his hand and noted the red helmet with a green visor.
'That helmet…no…it can't be…' Virginia began panicking.
"Where did you get that?" Virginia quickly asked him. "Where did you get that helmet?"
"This old thing?" He held up the helmet. "She was wearing it. Her armor is incredibly heavy…we've got three guys bringing it. Tommy and Danny are bringing her into town. Look, lady I'd love to stay and chat, but I need to get the healer." He quickly ran off towards Rhys while Virginia took off in the direction he came from. She saw three guys groaning and struggling to carry the armor and two other guys carrying someone on a gurney.
"Make way!" One of them yelled, but Virginia didn't break stride.
"I want to see her." Virginia requested.
"There's no time. Move!" Virginia took a step to the side and as they passed, Virginia's fears were confirmed; this was indeed Samus Aran, her mother. Her injuries looked pretty serious. Her face was badly beaten and her body had multiple bruises around the shoulders and chest area. Overall, her body was covered in blood and bruises, but she was breathing heavy which meant she was still alive.
"Mother!" She yelled with terror in her voice. She matched the speed of the others. They made it back quickly and once the two men set her down, Virginia began sobbing.
"Mother! No…please…what happened?" She sniffled and took sharp breaths.
"Samus? Virginia!" Rhys exclaimed. "What happened to her?"
"I-I don't know! I just found her like this. Mother! Are you alright? Answer me, please!"
"Virginia, you must back up. I will see to her injuries. Nephenee, would you mind?" Virginia felt someone pulling her back, but she fought against her.
"No! Mother! Please!" She insisted and pleaded. K-9 began growling with anger.
"Nngh…c-come…come on, k-kid…ya gotta…guh…come on…dah!" Nephenee fell backward and Virginia rushed towards her mother once again.
"Please, answer me…mother, please be ok…" She placed her head next to her mother's. Samus lightly groaned and turned her head.
"V…vuh…Virgin…ia…" She lightly uttered and the princess gasped.
"Mother? Are you…are you ok?" Her lip quivered as she looked anxious. Her mother looked like she was on the verge of death. And a life without her mother? She couldn't imagine such a fate.
"I'm…fine…jus…just a…a little…hurt…" She winced and took a sharp breath. "A…a lot…hurt…" She closed her eyes and exhaled one last time.
"Mother? Mother!"
"Virginia, she's merely passed out. I'll do my best to help her. But I need space, please give me time." Rhys begged. Virginia stood up and quietly backed up.
"Y-yes…please. If anything changes-"
"You'll be the first to know, I swear." Rhys vowed. "Tommy, Danny, be ready to move her." The men nodded while Virginia was guided away by Nephenee.
"I'm sorry…" Her hands began to shake. "I-"
"No, I get it." Nephenee stated. "But your mom's tough. Those injuries…sure, they look nasty…but your mom's tougher than she looks." Nephenee explained. "whatever did that to her, it's gotta be one hell of a fighter."
"She's going to be alright, right?" Virginia asked with hope.
"Yeah." Nephenee nervously replied. "she'll be fine." She then looked in a different direction and smiled. "You know what might take your mind off it? Spend some time with Rolf. I bet he'd love to talk with you. Hey Rolf!" Nephenee called out and Rolf was shooting his arrows at a target. Nine targets hit the center and one hit mid right.
"Damn." Rolf cursed as he walked up to grab the arrows.
"Rolf!" Nephenee called out again. He turned around and smiled at the teal haired knight.
"Hi Nephenee! What can I help you with?" Rolf stated. She pulled him aside and knelt down to get near his ear.
"The villagers found Samus Aran in a field…she looks pretty bad and Virginia's pretty torn up about it. Can you keep her busy for a bit?"
"So, this is the second little shit from Hyrule?" A man with crimson red hair appeared from a tree. "My, my…Zelda's little cunt."
"Shut it, Shinon!" Nephenee warned.
"How dare you speak to me in such a manner. Today is not the day you want to make me angry." She whistled once and K-9 immediately jumped forward; ready to attack.
"Call your dog off. I'd hate to kill him." He drew his arrow and aimed. "Then again, I've never eaten dog."
"Shinon, you better stop!" Another female voice called out. Everyone turned to see a woman with brown hair and bright blue-green eyes; though her expression was quite angry.
"Tell her to call off her dog."
"Apologize first. Then she'll call off her pokémon."
"I don't take orders from you, Mist." He aimed down his sight.
"Shinon, stand down." An older red haired woman boomed. Her hair was in a single lengthy braid and her eyes were a piercing green. "Stand down, or you will not only answer to Hyrule, but to Crimea and the commander himself." Hearing her words, Shinon hesitated for a moment. "In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Queen Zelda hung you in the town square for killing her daughter's pokémon." Shinon paused before lowering his weapon.
"…sorry." He said and walked away from the small group.
"I do not forgive you. But I will not attack you." She gave a long, low whistle and K-9 backed down. He did not take his eyes off of the sniper.
"Keep that filthy mutt away from me." He remarked and kept walking.
"You are a jerk!" Virginia yelled at him and he turned around. She panicked and her legs froze. The red haired lady shoved her to the ground and then, she felt a pain against her right cheek.
"Shinon!" She yelled and Torch immediately conjured a flamethrower. She sent her attack with such force that Shinon had no way to avoid the attack. His right arm received a nasty burn and his clothes began to burn as well.
"Gah! Put it out!" He began patting his body with his left arm and Zap ran up and bit his left hand with her sharp teeth. He yelled in pain and was vulnerable to any and all attacks. Aqua followed up with a hydro pump that didn't let up. Shinon was now struggling to breathe.
"Virginia, call them off." The red haired woman stated, but Virginia sat on the ground and watched.
"No." She quietly stated with a fire in her eyes.
"Virginia-"
"No." she repeated while he roared in pain. She merely watched as her friends tore into his skin and brought harm to him physically.
"Virginia, call them off or I will kill them!" She yelled and she snapped back out of whatever trance she was in.
"That's enough!" Virginia yelled and all her pokémon stopped attacking and returned to her. She winced from the arrow that clipped her, but she did not move. Her hands were shaking and she began sobbing. "I'm sorry…I'm sorry. I…what's happening to me?" She placed both hands over her eyes and began crying louder.
"Virginia…" Mist quietly stated while the red haired woman knelt down in front of her.
"Princess Hyrule, I understand you're angry with what our companion stated, but your actions are inexcusable. You must learn to control yourself when things get tense. Is that understood?" She sniffled and nodded her head.
"I'm really scared. I have shamed the good name of Hyrule…I don't deserve to live."
"Oh, come now. You allowed your anger to get the best of you. It's happened to all of us. We must try to be better than that. Perhaps if you apologize, we might be able to overlook this whole misunderstanding." Virginia sniffled and stood up before slowly walking over to the man. With each step she took, her anger grew once more until she stood in front of him.
"I will stay here with my mother and when she is able to move, we will leave. I do not wish to see you again. Please make an effort to ensure my request can be fulfilled." Virginia sternly stated before her expression softened. "I…I'm really sorry I got mad at you." She added as walked away from the group without a second look.
"…fucking bitch." Shinon cursed under his breath.
"Shinon, you will incur the wrath of Commander Ike when he returns. Until then, your injuries should be a good enough reminder of why you need to respect the royal families. All royal families. Word will pass to Samus and when she becomes healthy, be prepared to face her wrath first." Virginia began walking back towards where she had her interaction with her mother. The older man from earlier was still working in the fields and she approached the fence.
"It's you! If you're looking for Rhys, he's in the house at the bottom of the hill…on the left. I don't know if she's awake, but-"
Thank you." Virginia went into a dead sprint towards the house to see her mother. Before she entered the house, she returned all her pokémon to their poke balls. She opened the door and there was a man on her left and a woman on the right. Her mother was sitting in the bed; still breathing heavy. The man was feeding her as her arms still looked pretty nasty.
"Excuse me…" She quietly whispered and Rhys turned around. Next to him was another man with dark purple colored hair.
"Virginia…well, there…there is good news. Your mother will be fine." Rhys smiled and the princess smiled with her lip quivering. "And, there's more. We've given her a few vulneraries to ensure she is awake and fully conscious. We can grant you a few moments to talk to her."
"Please." Virginia begged and the two of them stood up and walked towards the door.
"We'll wait here." He informed the princess and she took the seat next to her mother. Samus barely opened her eyes and looked away.
"You're not supposed to see me like this, kid."
"Mother-"
"Virginia…" Samus coughed and cleared her throat. "You're not supposed to see me like this."
"Like what?" She asked.
"…weak." Her eyes started watering.
"Mother, you are not weak. Don't ever speak about yourself like that."
"I almost died." She told her child.
"Please don't." Virginia began crying. "I need you. Sam is dead, and I broke up with Serena. I can't-"
"What? Sam's…" Samus' voice trailed off and she began crying. "Damn it…damn them! Damn them!" She yelled before groaning in pain.
"Mother, save your strength. You need rest."
"Who killed them? Do you know?" Samus questioned her daughter.
"I…um…"
"Virginia, answer me."
"…maybe…"
"Who?"
"Gannondorf." Virginia admitted. "He…he knows about the triforce. He knows I have a piece." She was angry, but now, she seemed more composed.
"Alright. Thank you, Virginia." Samus smiled and her smile was quite motherly. She winced and she almost fell over from exhaustion.
"Virginia, that's enough." Rhys informed the princess, but Samus slowly raised a hand to stop Rhys from interrupting them.
"I got into a fight with someone here."
"Oh yeah? What did he look like?"
"Red hair…like a ponytail. He had a bow and arrow."
"Shinon." She said quietly. "What happened?"
"He…called me names. He…said mean things…he attacked me." She showed her face and Samus clenched her teeth. "I…I did a horrible thing."
"What did you do?" She asked her daughter.
"I…I hurt him. And I…I almost killed him." She closed her eyes tightly as tears fell down her face. "I hate myself because there's a small part of me that wanted to kill him. I wanted him dead. I do not deserve the title of princess. I have disgraced the kingdom." Samus remained silent for a minute.
"Virginia…come here." Samus instructed her daughter. Virginia complied and Samus just smiled. "You're a princess of Hyrule. You think I'd be upset that you wanted to kill someone? Hell, your mom and have wanted to kill people before. In fact…" Samus sighed. "You got time for a story?" Virginia nodded, but before she could start, her head drooped down and her eyelids closed.
"Virginia, your mother needs to rest." Rhys insisted. Virginia looked back at the queen who was now fast asleep. Though Virginia wanted to hear her story, she knew that her mother needed rest. "I promise to inform you when she wakes." Virginia rubbed her eyes and sniffled once more before nodding.
"Thank you, Rhys." Virginia smiled.
"I know Shinon can be a bit much. I'll be sure to speak with him when I have a moment." The purple haired man stated to her.
"Alright." She stood up and kissed her mother's cheek before tucking her in and quietly leaving. Today had been a bad day overall for the princess. She lost her girlfriend, and then her temper. But even through all the pain and sadness…there was a glimpse of joy. Virginia was reunited with her mother. For now, her mother needed rest and she needed to find a way to simmer down until her mother woke again.
