Toothless was at Fishlegs' house. The nerdy Viking was ecstatic to see a Night Fury, and leapt at the chance to study the dragon up close. So, Hiccup was left alone, in his room. While he was sketching prototypes for a new tail for Toothless, he heard a door slam downstairs. "Hey, Dad," Hiccup called out, "Gobbler said that he wanted to talk to y-" Hiccup's cousin, Snotlout, stepped onto the landing.

"Oh, hey," Hiccup swallowed, a bit intimidated by his older cousin.

"Well, if it isn't the puny, little embarrassment that everyone mistook for a hero!" Snotlout sneered down at the lanky boy. "How are you, Hiccup?"

Hiccup scratched the back of his neck nervously. "I'm, uh, good. What can I help you wi-"

"Nothing, I was just dropping by to, y'know, make sure you knew." "Know what?" "That you are, how do I say this? A hiccup."

Hiccup looked down as he was reminded, yet again, of his lack. Lack in strength, wit, charisma, everything a chief is supposed to be. Even though he had get a little better since he met Toothless, the painful memories of his childhood stuck to him like glue.

"You don't deserve to be chief, Hiccup. I do. You don't deserve Astrid. I do. You don't even deserve to be alive."

Hiccup jumped out of his chair, shaking his head while trying to stop any tears from falling. "That's not true! You're wrong, Snotlout! I...I do! I do...deserve...t-to...to..." As Hiccup's voice quieted, Snotlout leaned next to him.

"No one would even know you were gone."

A tear splashed on the ground, and Hiccup began to breathe in shaky gasps. "No!" The boy cried, "They would! They would!" Reaching for his cousin's arm, Snotlout whispered, "It's time to find out."

Hiccup jumped back and ran. Down the stairs, out the door, down the streets, the adrenaline surging through his body carried him far. Blindly running through the forest, tears streaked across his face. But just in time, the boy stopped himself. Peering down from the ledge he was on, Hiccup observed the familiar, bowl-shaped area.

Of course. That was it. The pond, the rocky figures, crevices along the sides of the boulders.

It was where he met Toothless. Wounded. Hurt because of him.

Snotlout was right, Hiccup thought as he leaned over the sudden drop-off.

No one would know I was gone. And no one will.

He jumped.
