As promised. Here's the edited version of Field Experience. I went over the old version some time ago and just changed some things to make the story flow better and feel more natural.

Disclaimer: I do not own Vampire Academy or its characters Everything - except for the few characters I added of course - belongs to Richelle Mead.

1 - ROSE

Alberta has to begin right now. I don't know how much longer I can wait before I decide to bolt.

I mean, how much time does it take one person to get a list with names into their own hands? Not that long, thank you very much.

We've been sitting here for half an hour with nothing to do besides waiting. I'm not the most patient person, in case you didn't know that already.

Mason is sitting next to me, holding my hand, and laughing at my impatience together with the rest of my friends. All except for Adrian, who seems to be as bored as I am. I don't even know why he's here, to be honest. It's not as if he is a student here. I guess he doesn't want to spend the day on his own.

Alberta finally steps onto the podium and begins to talk to us. Good, I was about to leave.

"Hello everyone. Today is the day, where you, young novices, get assigned to your Moroi for Field Experience. You will have to protect him or her from attacks by 'Strigoi' â" your instructors taking on the role of the Strigoi â" without any exceptions over a six-week period. Switching the Moroi, you are assigned to, with another one is prohibited, unless, you aim to fail this assignment, of course. I do hope I have made myself clear."

I look around me and see everyone nodding. I do the same. Alberta can be terrifying at times when she wants to be. I assume right now is one of those times. She takes Field Experience â" all our assignments, actually â" very seriously. So do I. That's something you need to do if you successfully want to graduate from this school.

"Very well," she continues. "Let's begin, shall we? Mason Ashford, you are assigned to Christian Ozera."

I smile, knowing it's a good thing for two reasons. One being that Mason and Christian are friends. He is not afraid of Christian like the other students are. They still expect him to follow in his parents' footsteps and turn Strigoi â" which is total bullshit if you ask me. They are all idiots. The second reason is that he and Lissa will want to spend a lot of time together, meaning I'll get to see Mason a lot as well.

I need to calm down, or I'll be doing a happy-dance in about five seconds in front of the whole student body. I shouldn't do that; it doesn't quite fit my image. I'll spare myself that kind of embarrassment and do it later in my dorm room where no one can see me.

Mason beams at me and releases my hand after giving it a light squeeze. Let me interpret that grin for you: 'Now you can stop worrying about having to guard him, and he won't annoy you as much.'

Please do not misunderstand. Christian and I are friends, but he's also way too annoying for my liking, which is why I'd rather not have to spend all that time with him. Six weeks can be a long time, my friends. Believe me.

Mason walks up to Alberta and receives a little package containing all the information he needs to be able to guard Christian properly. When he returns, he kisses me on the cheek and â" after sitting down next to me â" gives Eddie a high five. I can't help but smile.

Alberta announces two other novices and their Moroi, and I am trying my hardest not to laugh out loud. Poor Emily and Jade, they are assigned to Jesse and Ralph. I feel sorry for them as much as I think it's a funny situation. They are screwed, and they know it. Those two Moroi are indeed first class assholes who love to spread stupid rumours.

"Eddison Castile," Alberta continues. 'Your assigned Moroi is Vasilisa Dragomir.'

Nice! No, wait. I misheard what she just said, right? Clearly, this must be a mistake. I was supposed to guard Lissa, for Field Experience and after we graduate.

I take a look at Eddie who appears to be sorry, judging from the way he carefully watches me. I force a smile because I want him to know it's okay. I may not be happy with how things turned out, but considering there is nothing I can do, I shouldn't additionally make him feel awful about it.

I glance at Mason who looks a little worried for a brief moment before he turns to me and smiles again. "Don't worry, Rose. The worst ones are already taken," he whispers in my ear, and I snicker.

He's right, at least I can't get assigned to Jesse or Ralph. Who could possibly be worse?

"Noah Galen, you are assigned to Mia Rinaldi."

Noah is seated a few rows in front of us; a good-looking fellow with dirty blonde hair and dark greyish eyes. He asked me out on a date before Lissa and I ran away from St. Vlad's. Generally, I'd say that he is Mia's type, but it is painfully evident that Mia and Eddie only have eyes for each other, although they don't want to admit to it just yet.

I'm next. Who's it going to be?

Alberta appears to be taking her sweet time. I roll my eyes. Oh, please, get on with it.

'Rose Hathaway, your assigned Moroi is Adrian Ivashkov."

He doesn't even go to this school!

I stand corrected. While having to guard Adrian isn't exactly worse than getting assigned to Jesse or Ralph, he does have a habit of getting on my nerves.

My eyes widen as I stare at Mason, shocked. I was sure I'd get Lissa, I didn't expect to get assigned to Adrian. I didn't know he'd participate. I cannot believe that these words just left Alberta's mouth.

I look at Adrian who appears to be extremely satisfied with the situation, but somehow not surprised. If he knew about this, then I hope he's aware he doesn't have much time left to live.

For the time being, I have to get up and receive my package, nonetheless. I'm stunned at how I manage to stay calm and position myself in front of Alberta to accept the little set of information our instructors prepared for us. Yay, information about Adrian Ivashkov. That's everything I've ever wanted. Now I can go and die in peace by jumping off the roof of this school.

Right now, the hall is way too quiet. No one is saying a word, not even whispering.

I return to my seat and sit down. My friends, including Adrian, are staring at me, expecting me to make a scene. It's a fascinating option â" not going to lie â" but it's not how I should handle this particular situation. I have to suck it up and live with it. Alberta said it earlier, I can't get assigned to a different Moroi and I sure as hell will not voluntarily fail this assignment.

"Are you alright?" asks Mason. There it is.

"I am," I reply and I mean it. I've made up my mind. I'm still not happy with the situation, but I've accepted it.

Adrian begins to smile when he hears my answer. Mason, on the other hand, watches me sceptically.

"I really am, but you know how he is..," I trail off.

"I take that as a compliment," Adrian interrupts and winks at me. Well, it wasn't.

I roll my eyes at his answer and face Mason to kiss him on the lips. The kiss is slow, and we take our time but have to stop all too soon because we're keenly aware of the fact that we are in a hall full of students and teachers. I don't need an audience.

"Could you two please get a room and spare the rest of us? I'm pretty sure what you're doing counts as a public disturbance," Christian says annoyed. "We don't really appreciate getting to see you two make out all the time."

"Yeah, will do, Chris. May I remind you that I've seen you and Lissa do a lot more than just make out before? I am scarred for life, so what are you going to do about that, huh?" I raise one eyebrow.

He opens his mouth to retort, but I beat him to it and go on. "Things I really didn't need to see," I wiggle both my eyebrows suggestively. Christian glares at me, Lissa blushes, and the rest of us laugh at them.

We all continue to listen to Alberta who announces the last few names on her list. Mason puts his arms around me, and I rest my head on his shoulder, still thinking.

I keep in mind that I'll have to talk to Adrian since I have a feeling that he has something to do with this. If that is the case, I won't take responsibility for my actions. While I will guard him for the required time, I can't guarantee that he won't disappear afterwards..forever.
