The command didn't work but the voice did.

Consumed by anger and hatred….. hatred on that bitch was wasted but it was all he had, he was the loser.

On good days his mother's sad eyes and troubled sighs visited his dreams.

On bad nights he was surrounded by screaming, soft sobbing and broken fragments of his name begging him to remember….. save her…

He awoke feeling guiltier and angrier. How could he ever forget someone he had never met? He would cut out his heart before he failed her...her….Ome?

Randomly, he was visited with flashes of soft hands caressing his cheek, gently combing through silver hair, lovingly caressing ears long gone.

Images of a girl with so much love in her eyes that he forgot to breathe.

Snippets of a life filled with hurt, guilt, and heartbreak so intense that he wondered how he could survive but then being rewarded with so much love that he would take all the pain again if the end result was the same- her love.

There wasn't much he could do with himself after the incident. His illusions of finally belonging were shattered. He had forgotten in the joy of the moment how much he hated being human, the jewel was gone but so was InuYasha.

He didn't recognize himself anymore.

It was years before he understood. Dreams were all he had now and in this, they provided answers.

Why was this his life? You failed.

Failed? The fates were testing you… this is your punishment.

A/N: I was thinking the other day about what would have happened if InuYasha did wish on the jewel. If Kikyo had not interacted with Onigumo, what would have happened? Inuyasha would have grown to hate her, he already hates all 3 sides of himself and that hatred would have grown. Everything that helped him survive is gone now and he is lost again. His life would not have been a good one, he needed Kagome to help him learn how to love all of himself.
