A/N: When I started this little adventure I though limiting the word count to 300 words would help me finish faster. Having just finished the 9th mistake, I am finding it more difficult than imagined. It also might be that each of these shorts ends sadly. After all, this is why I think Inuyasha was pinned to the tree for so many years. Things needed to go right, for the Gods would not have it any other way. Kagome and Inuyasha were born for each other but not just to meet but also to live a happy life together dammit! Sooooooooo here it is:
Disclaimer: Inuyasha I don't own. This story I do.
Mistake _9_
"This Sesshomaru, wants news on Naraku."
"Keh, why would I tell you?"
"I care not what you want. No matter, you have nothing."
Turning, soft footsteps stopped him. Would the girl ever listen?
"Sesshomaru, dinner is rea-."
He heard the moment she saw his brother.
The falter in her step, the sharp low intake of breath followed by a low sob, the way her heart skipped a beat.
Most importantly, he heard and saw what she did not. How his brothers' breath faltered, the low whine released, the small step taken towards her.
He smelt what she couldn't- the desire, longing, sadness, guilt, and love.
Something drastic had happened between Inuyasha and his new charge for them to have gone their separate ways. Asking for reasons was beneath him but couldn't help wonder what had been the breaking point. Unnaturally focused on her now shaky breathing, he almost missed her soft greeting.
"Hello, Kikyo. Hi- Hello Inuyasha. I'm sorry for interrupting," was all she said before turning to leave the same way she came.
The dead Miko left without a backward glance but he saw how hard it was for his brother to turn from Kagome's retreating back. Hands clenched and eyes shut, Inuyasha made to follow but as he left whispered so low Sesshomaru almost didn't catch it, "She's all I have left. Please protect her."
Did Inuyasha not know he would die if separated from his mate? His half-brother was an idiot but Kagome's safety was paramount.
Sesshomaru never stood a chance for a couple of weeks later he knew instantly the moment Inuaysha was slain because Kagome pitched forward, a sob escaping her as she clutched her chest and in his arms, the most powerful Miko in existence died, scared and heartbroken.
The mighty Sesshomaru had failed.
