Thank you for the kind review! I've spent a lot of time wondering about their future as well and with SM toying with the idea of a future book it made me curious. I hope you enjoy this chapter!

Twilight and all its characters belong to Stephenie Meyer.

Chapter 2

"Nessie" a vague whisper interrupted my dream. "Hey Ness, it's time to wake up. Today's the day." Ugh the day, moving day. Maybe if I pretended to stay asleep they'd just leave.

"That very well may have worked if I couldn't read your every thought." Dad chuckled "I thought you were rather excited about the move this last month."

It's true, I had been excited but Jacob hadn't and it was so hard to be happy about something I knew was hurting him.

"Don't worry about Jacob, he really is more than fine with moving. Besides, Esme's been working on the new house for ages, you're going to love it." He added with a light squeeze to my hand.

"Can't anyone get any privacy with you around?" Seriously, mind readers I mentally added with a dramatic eye roll for good measure. "What time are we leaving anyway? Where's mom and Jake?" I wondered aloud, not completely sure why I'd bothered with talking.

"Everyone's at the main house, we're just waiting for you and Carlisle, he's finishing up some very last-minute paperwork for a colleague. So let's get to it, we've got a long day ahead of us." He'd said while leaving my room.

I tossed my bedding and pajamas into a bag and threw my hair into a bun, not even bothering to brush it. As I walked back to the main house my heart felt a little heavy for the first time since learning we'd be moving. To be completely honest I was rather nervous about going to school, I had no qualms about the academia but I'd never really spent much time around real humans. I didn't count people like Grandpa and Emily, they were all in on the secret to a certain degree. These humans would be clueless and I had a responsibility to ensure they stayed that way, I'd also been informed by Emmett that teenagers were just about the worst kind of human there was.

"Hey there Ness!" I turned to see Seth waving his massive arms in the air.

"Oh, hey Seth! You all packed up and ready to go?" I asked.

"Sure am! I can't wait to see Rochester, I've never been further east than North Dakota. I bet Esme has the house all ready for us, she's been slaving away these last few weeks" he just kept talking, I wish Jacob could share some of his enthusiasm about the move, maybe then it wouldn't feel like a crime to be excited.

As we walked into the house I was taken aback by the sight. The furniture was all gone, walls bare, and 7 vampires stood front and center looking rather out of place in the empty room. Where was Jacob? Just as that thought had crossed my mind he walked in through the back door. Though the room now looked more complete it was still a far stretch from the home it was yesterday.

"We're just waiting on Carlisle now." Esme said, breaking the silence.

"He should be here in exactly 4 minutes" Alice replied, "let's head outside, there's nothing left to do in here."

We all shuffled outside, none of us moving with any sense of purpose, with the exception of Seth. My mom finally said what I'm sure most of us had been thinking "This place just feels like home." She sighed, my Dad nodded and wrapped his arms around her. Rosalie, Emmett, and even Jasper mumbled words in agreement with her comment.

"Tell me about it." Muttered Jake, making eye contact with something other than the floor for the first time since I'd seen him today.

He walked a few steps toward the forest and put his head down again. I walked up behind him, unsure of what to do. Our relationship had always come with such ease, there weren't bad days or hard times with Jake.

"Are you okay?" I reached out to touch his back.

"La Push has been my home for 25 years, I learned to walk and talk in a little house by the ocean, I started and finished school in the same little schoolhouse with all the same kids. My family fell apart here after my mom died and then we put it back together, stronger than it had ever been. I was broken here and then piece by piece I found my way to who I was. I fought to protect this town and its people. I made the best friends I'll ever have." He turned to face me, cupping my chin in his warm hand "I fell in love here." I opened my mouth to speak but he continued "This is the only home I've ever known and it hurts to leave." He turned back to the trees again.

I pulled him to me, I wanted to tell him to stay, to go back home to Billy and his little red house. "Jacob maybe this isn't-" he cut me off "I'm coming. Years ago I spent months wishing to be anywhere but here, it's just harder to say goodbye than I thought it would be." I pressed a soft kiss into his chest and he smiled, the first genuine Jacob-y smile that I'd seen in a long time.

"Alright people, there will be time for reminiscing on the road! If we want to avoid an 8 car pile up outside of Chicago we need to leave now." And with that Alice started pushing us toward our designated cars as soon as Carlisle pulled up.

Seth, Jacob, and I were all in Jake's car. I was suddenly thankful that his rabbit had wheezed its final breath last year, I'm not sure this trip would have been doable in that particular vehicle. As soon as we got out of Washington Jake's attitude changed, I could tell he was still hurting but he was determined to make a good effort to adopt Rochester as his new home for the next several years.

Like Alice has predicted there were no signs of any accidents outside Chicago. My dad did demand that we stop there to stretch our legs though. He was a vampire for crying out loud... what did he need to stretch? We could use a fill up on gas and a bite to eat anyway so we didn't protest.

We had been led to a small house on the north side of Chicago, the home was old and looked like no one had lived there in ages, definitely not something that Esme took any part in upkeeping. Suddenly I pieced together why we had stopped, this was his home. His human home.

"Yes, it is." He responded to my thoughts "Esme was looking for a particular piece of furniture we'd had back when we lived in Tennessee, so I figured I'd take the chance to show you and your mother this house while she got it."

Inside the house was rather dusty, I was right, no one had been here in years. The living room was what I imagined to be a perfect replica of what it had looked like in the early 1900s when it was abandoned. I walked the short hallway to the back of the house, a few photos lined the walls, I could easily make out my father who bore a striking resemblance to his father. A photo of a woman and a small boy was next, the love and adoration clear on her face, despite the deteriorating picture quality, he really had been the whole world to her. There were two small rooms toward the back of the house, one a bit bigger than the other. I knew the room my father had lived in immediately. There were baseball cards and war propaganda pasted to the dingy walls. In a way I could image him here, laying across the bed, human and obsessed with the war in Europe. But I couldn't picture him there as he stood before me today, I suppose it had been a different life then.

Jacob snorted "When did Edward turn into such a big nerd? If he redid his room now it would be covered in wilted flowers and music notes." I laughed too, like I said... a different life.

We didn't spend much more time there but my mother wanted to look through a few boxes before we left. The guys and I decided to make the most of our time and grab something to eat. We drove into the parking lot of a Portillo's, hope they were ready to be eaten out of their french fry supply, they'd been participating in the contests with Quil and Claire.

I finished my meal quickly, still not particularly fond of human food, when I received a phone call. Mom and Dad were ready to hit the road again. I stood up and spoke, "Hey, I'm gonna head next door and fill up the tank, everyone's ready to go."

"Alright Ness, we'll pay and meet you over there in a few." Seth replied as Jacob stuffed another fistful of fries into his mouth.

I slid my card into the reader and waited for my options. Hitting all the necessary buttons I leaned against the car while the tank filled. It was a windy evening but the dark skies were clear. I hadn't been paying much attention to where I was, so when I noticed a man staring at me from across the street I was startled for a moment. He was tall and lanky with sandy blond hair and a scar across his face. He didn't break eye contact when my eyes had met his, which was unusual. I was used to men looking at me... it came with Cullen territory, but his face was perfectly focused on mine and the curious look in his eye was somewhat unsettling. I was glad when Seth and Jacob walked up at that moment, breaking my connection to the stranger.

"Almost done?" Jake asked.

"Uh yeah, just about. I'm ready to get going." I responded mechanically, when my eyes darted back to the spot across the street the man was gone. I looked down the sidewalk each way but didn't see him. Maybe he got on a bus, though I didn't see any bus stops and the street was almost empty. It was easy to shake the unsettling feeling with every mile that passed, soon it was nothing but a memory.

It was 7 hours later that we pulled off the road and onto a long bumpy driveway, we were finally home.
