Disclaimer: I do not own Buffy or CSI. I am only borrowing them.
Note this story take place at the start of the first CSI episode. Those of you who have watched it knows where this is going. Instead of Holly Gibbs its Buffy's first night.
Buffy Summers pulled her SUV into the parking lot her new job as a CSI level 1 in Las Vegas. Getting out she grabbed her kit from the back before locking the doors. She walked into the building and stopped at the front desk to ask where Grissom's office was. The secretary gave her directions and Buffy found the place easily. She pushed the door open and walked in.
"Hello?" She received no answer and began to look around.
The office was decorated with all kind of things in jars that would gross out most people, but Buffy wasn't most people. She had already seen worse things than a pig in a jar. She knew the moment he was behind her.
"You must be my supervisor." When Buffy had turned around, she saw the surprise look on his face.
"Yes, I'm Gil Grissom your supervisor on graveyard."
"Buffy Summers your newest CSI. Nice office you have here not how I would decorate mine, but I have a feeling this just screams you." Buffy said shaking his hand.
"I like it. Would you mind taking off your jacket and rolling up your sleeve?"
"Sure, but you should know if you're thinking of taking blood I already gave today." Buffy said taking off her coat and showing him the band-aid. "You'll have to get your blood for your experiment somewhere else. Don't look so surprised. I did my homework before coming here and my source told me you like to get the newbies for blood for your experiments, so I made sure I had my physical and doctor visit today. So, do you have papers for me to sign?" Buffy asked with a smile.
"Right this way."
Buffy Summers took a seat in an empty chair in Jim Brass's office as he stood looking a bit agitated.
"Well, congratulations Summers, you're the fifth person I've been forced to hire. We are the #2 crime lab in the country. We solve crimes; most labs render unsolvable. Now, what makes you think you belong here?"
"Well as you know I come highly recommended the top one being the President himself. I graduated top in my class and I'm not some wishy-washy person who's going to faint at the sight of blood or a dead body. I've seen my share of both. The last place I lived had the highest mortality rate in the world before an earthquake swallowed the town. Plus, I heard the Dayshift supervisor is an ass who wants others to kiss his. I don't kiss ass. I kick it. So why don't you reserve your judgment until after you see what I can do? I can promise you one thing you won't be disappointed."
"We'll see. Dismiss." Gil and Brass waited for her to leave. "Take her to that autopsy you have scheduled at 12:30 am. I think every new hire should experience an autopsy on their first night."
"She's not going to crumble that easy. She's different from the other four you were forced to higher."
"We'll see." Brass said again as he sat down and began the paperwork on his desk.
Buffy Summers stood beside the coroner as he pulled the sheet back. Buffy looked the body over. Her eyes immediately went to the neck to check for puncture wounds but not seeing any.
"Gunshot victim, but not self-inflicted because the angle is all wrong. I'd say he was about six feet away."
"And you would be right." The coroner said looking extremely impressed at her.
He begins cutting the man on the table open and Buffy watched and learned. She showed no signs that this was getting to her. When the autopsy was over, Buffy looked at her supervisor as they were taking off the scrubs.
"You know if Captain Brass is trying to get me to quit it's going to take more than this. This isn't my first dead body. Heck it isn't even my first autopsy."
"I tried to tell him, but Brass doesn't think you're going to last."
"What about you? What do you think?"
"I think there's more to you than meets the eye. You use your looks hoping people will underestimate you, and you prove them wrong."
"Interesting, we'll just have to see if I prove your theory right." Buffy said giving him a smile.
Buffy sat beside Grissom in the Tahoe on their way to a convenient store robbery. Grissom was telling her about his first robbery when Buffy's phone rang.
"Excuse me one moment. Hello? Willow? I just got this number tonight. Why you little hacker you. It's going well. Everything I was told about him was right on the money. I tell you all about it after my shift. All right. Bye."
Buffy closed the phone and put it back in her pocket and sees Grissom watching her out of the corner of his eye.
"Sorry about that. My friend wanted to see how my first night was going."
Grissom pulls the Tahoe into the convenient store parking lot and put the car in park. He turns to look at Buffy.
"This was a routine robbery. Dust for prints. Check the video tape. Take lots of fun photos. I'll be back in about an hour to pick you up."
"That's fine just don't forget about me. I don't fancy a walk back to the crime lab." Buffy said as she got out and grabbed her case from the backseat.
"If you get done early use channel seven on your walkie." Buffy nodded. As she heads inside the store Grissom pulls out of the parking lot. Buffy walks into the store.
"I'm Buffy Summers, I'm with the Las Vegas Crime lab."
"My store gets robbed and they send me Malibu Barbie." Buffy ignored the woman's rant.
"Ma'am, if you could step outside and keep everyone out, I'll get to processing and we'll see about getting this place open and running again."
The woman left in a hissy but didn't go outside but into the back room. Buffy hears her fumbling with something as she was taking photos. She continues to take prints while she listened to what the woman was doing.
"Ma'am, I would suggest you put your gun back in its hiding place and go wait outside. I would hate to have to take it from you and then arrest you from keeping me from doing my job and possible assault on a law officer."
Continuing to print, Buffy heard the lady putting the weapon back into its hiding place and then heard her footsteps pass her and head to the front door. With a smile, Buffy continued working.
Buffy was dropped off back at the lab to begin processing her evidence. She had taken her samples down to trace and began running the multitude of fingerprints. Buffy was looking through her notes that she had took when she heard someone clearing their voice. Instantly a smile came to her face.
"How's your first day going?" Greg Sanders asked. Buffy looked up and gave him a smile.
"Not bad I've just finished gathering my first bit of evidence from a convenient store robbery. I've been running the multitude of fingerprints that you would find at a place like that. I think Captain Brass is trying to bore me into quitting."
"Well this should help your night." Greg said handing her one of the two steaming cups of coffee. Buffy carefully took a sip and savored the flavor.
"Ahh Blue Hawaiian, from your stash or is this from what I gave to you last night."
"My own. I keep a stash hidden here and try to make the coffee when no one else is around, but I'll always have a cup for my favorite CSI."
"Thanks, don't let the others hear you. It might make them jealous." Buffy and Greg laughed.
"I've got to get back to my lab. Want to go to breakfast after shift?"
"Sounds good. I'll meet you out in the parking lot."
"See you then." Greg went back to his lab and Buffy continued going through her prints.
Grissom had just told Buffy to get her things together for she would be going out with someone soon to check out a robbery at an apartment. She had picked up her kit and was heading to where Grissom said she should wait when she heard yelling. Her slayer hearing could hear Captain Brass telling Warrick that he would be shadowing her for the next three weeks or until someone named Nick made his 100th. Buffy heard Grissom talking to Warrick and soon heard Grissom footsteps walking away. She waited a few seconds before stepping out. Warrick looked at her with an exasperated sigh.
"Let's go."
Buffy followed him out to the Pathfinder. She got in the passenger side quickly buckling her seatbelt. She stayed quiet for most of the trip until they arrived at complex.
"Sorry you got stuck babysitting the newbie."
"Yeah, I'm sorry too." Warrick talked into the walkie-talkie. "Control, p-4442 arrive."
"Copy that." The dispatcher said.
"Okay, go inside. Dust for prints. Make sure you take plenty of photographs..."
"…photographs. Be thorough. Yada yada yada. I got it. Grissom gave me the same speech.
"Good. Look, I gotta run an errand. You'll be okay on your own?"
"There's an officer here and I can handle myself, but if I have to walk back and ruin these new boots there may be trouble."
Buffy said with a smile as she got out of the car grabbing her case. Shutting the door, she waits for Warrick to drive off before heading up to the apartment building.
Back at the crime lab Grissom, Catherine, Warrick, and Nick were all in the break room. Gil was giving Nick his CSI level 3 badge.
"Congratulations, Nicky, my boy. You are now a C.S.I. Level 3."
"Whoo!" Nick whooped.
"Good job, Nick." Warrick congratulated.
"Thanks. Uh, hey, Warrick, listen I heard about the whole thing with the shoe and..."
"Forget it, man. It's all you." Warrick says as he stands and shakes Nick's hand.
"Thanks."
"Let's get some breakfast. It's on me!" Catherine offered as heads to the doorway. Just as everyone was about to follow Brass appears.
"Sorry to break up your party but I need grave to pull a double. Buffy Summers has been shot. Apparently, the suspect returned to the scene and Summers managed to subdue him but not before being shot. Brown, I'm putting you on administrative leave pending a full report of your whereabouts. So, wash your face and change your socks. You have a long day ahead of you."
Brass left the break room. Everyone else stood there stunned at what they just heard. No one more so than Greg who had heard what Brass said as he was walking toward the break room to see if anyone had seen Buffy.
"Buffy's been shot. Why? How? I must get to the hospital. I have to call Giles."
"Greg there's nothing you can do for her until she comes out of surgery." Catherine told him.
"I have to be there. I'm Buffy's next of kin. She and I are first cousins."
"Cousins?" Warrick managed to croak out. The guilt he had been feeling just increased tenfold.
"She didn't want anyone to really know until she was sure she would be staying since the track record around here for new hires hasn't been good. I really have to go."
The hospital waiting room was full of people waiting on word if Buffy was going to survive or not. Greg had called Giles, and in less than fifteen minutes, having travelled magically, Giles, Willow, Xander, Dawn, and Faith were sitting with Greg in the waiting room. The surgery had lasted about an hour with removing the bullet and repairing the damage from said bullet. When everyone thought they could wait no more the doctor came out asking for Greg.
"That's me. How's my cousin Doctor?"
"She was shot in the shoulder and the bullet shattered her bone which we have done our best to repair. She's lost a lot of blood, but if no complications set in, I believe she will make a full recovery."
"When will we be able to see her?" Dawn asked.
"She's in recovery and once we have her settled into a room you can see her."
The doctor left and the group felt a little bit of relief knowing Buffy was alive and they would be able to see her soon.
Three months later and after some intense therapy, Buffy returned to work at the crime lab. Warwick had been fired when the investigation found out that he left her on her own to place a bet. Catherine had been assigned as her new training officer and Buffy was okay with that. She had gotten to know Catherine and Nick during her recovery as they had come numerous times with Greg. Her first night saw her working the scene with the entire team on airplane. Buffy saw Jim Brass there and it was the first time she had seen him since she had been shot. He had been watching her approach and Buffy could see the guilt on his face. Buffy just walked over to him and spoke quickly.
"I'm still here. I told you I was made of tougher stuff."
Buffy walked away not giving him a chance to reply and rejoined Catherine to help process the scene.
