Chapter 3-New Friends, and Antagonists
UA Orientation Area
'Why me?' Tim pondered in the empty 1A section of the orientation. "Why did he want me here? He knows I'm quirckless, perhaps he didn't want me in Eraser's test?" Examining the room,Tim saw press and pros alike front and center. Off to the side he saw the various other classes sectioned off. He noticed a blond girl talking excitedly in the General Studies section, slightly to the chagrin of her classmates.
On stage a small mammal walked to the center.
"Good morning!" The principal called. "Thank you all for coming. I'm happy to welcome to UA all those in attendance. I realize you've heard rumors of our faculty increasing to meet the demands of a larger student body, and I am excited to introduce our new teachers." He then waved towards the right, and a group of heroes paraded onto the stage. It consisted of Black Canary, Elongated Man, John Henry Irons, and All Might last with his traditional "I am here!".
The moment All Might came on stage the crowd erupted.
After a few minutes of this Nezu regained control of the speech. "I look forward to great things from all of our students this year." He paused, taking a deep breath. "Now, I'd like to make a special announcement." The teachers on stage looked at each other in confusion as they joined the teacher section of the seating. Apparently, whatever was prepared, they hadn't been informed.
Nezu Continued. "As most of you know we at UA are always striving to improve are teaching course and train the next generation of heroes. Until recently, we, along with many other hero academies, have been limited by certain laws in who were accepted into our schools. Specifically, it was considered necessary for all students to have a quirk to even be accepted for general studies or support courses. With the repeal of said rule last year, we are happy to welcome a small number of students without quirks to our school this year."
This statement was met with a few murmurs among the press and students, along with some seemingly unhappy teachers frowning.
Disrupting the mummering, the principal continued. "While I know some are uncertain of this news, I ask you to please refrain from questions for but a moment. As of now, I formally welcome all quirckless students to UA. There will be 4 such students spread throughout various General Studies and Support Courses. There is also one quirckless student in Class 1A of the Hero course."
For about five seconds it was quiet enough to hear a pin drop. Of all the unaware teachers, All Might seemed the most shocked. The other three seemed surprised but recovered quickly. Black Canary even seemed to smile. The press however, soon erupted in questions at the marsupial.
… Class 1A Homeroom
Unlike the presentation, where people waited and absorbed the information, here one of the students, Tim thought he'd heard someone call him Bakugo, instantly started yelling. Roughly sixty percent of his rant consisted of obscenities. Other students had mixed reactions. A few frowns, an awestruck look from Midoriya, and what appeared to be a look of confusion from Bart.
"Uh... what's up with everyone? The speedster leaned over to ask Tim. "They're acting like sheep are flying or something." *
Tim eyed the teen strangely. "I think you mean pigs, but to answer your question the Quirckless aren't really liked that much." He told him.
"Why?" Bart asked innocently.
Before Tim could answer again, Bakugo, who had briefly stopped spewing profanities, turned towards them. "Because their #!#!# useless, that's why!" he yelled angrily.
Tim could only sigh as more and more students, realizing who the quirckless person was, began to stare at him. Granted, most of them had more thoughtful expressions then he had seen in years when his being quirckless was brought up. Except for Bakugo, who just kept glaring at him. Bart, still not understanding everyone's stance on the Quirckless, just shrugged and returned to doodling in his notebook that suddenly appeared. Once Mr. Aiziawa woke back up, the day continued.
Save for Bart, the class mainly avoided him for the rest of the morning while they processed.
…
He had Lunch with Bart that day. Bart didn't really stop talking all that much. Even with how much he spoke, Tim didn't learn much about the teen other than he was impulsive. Very impulsive. This was evident by the amount of times he disappeared to ask other students questions, while managing to still eat the equivalent of a five course meal, and talk Tim's ear off. Then again, it was nice to be around someone who seemed to respect him even knowing he was quirckless.
While Bart was getting a fourth helping of food, Tim noticed Midoriya approach him while muttering up a storm.
"Uh, hello." Tim greeted, shaking the green haired boy out of his muttering.
"Hello!" Izuku jumped. "My name is Izuku Midoriya"
"Nice to meet you Midoriya, my name's Tim."
Izuku stood there a moment fidgeting before asking, "is it true? Are you really… quirckless?"
Tim scrutinized him for a second. He didn't seem to be concerned, pitying, or angry like other people he'd met over the years. He almost came across as… curious?
"Yes. I am." Tim decided to respond.
"Ah okay." Izuku muttered probably hoping for a more involved answer. "If you don't mind my asking, how'd you make It through the exam?" he asked, once again brimming with genuine curiosity. Once he asked Tim could see a few heads turn around them. Figures that that would be the number one question on people's minds.
"Well, I suppose the judges saw potential in me just like the rest of us." He tried to respond evenly. Silently he hoped this conversation topic would end soon. Last thing he needed was the faculty hearing about his training and looking into the King Snake mess in Tokyo a couple months back.
As if in answer to his thoughts, a brown-haired girl ran into Izuku. "Midoriya!" she said startled.
"Ururaka!" he cried startled. He seemed to do that a lot.
"Sorry for not seeing you there." She apologized. Izuku nodded franticly for some reason. Turning to Tim, she spoke "Hello!" She greeted. "My name is Ochako Ururaka."
Tim smiled in response. "Nice to meet you, I'm Tim Drake."
Looking behind her, Ochako's eyes furrowed. "Oh, sorry. I was trying to introduce a new friend to you, but I think I lost her."
Tim thought for a moment. New friend, introducing them to me, means their probably one of the other quirckless students. "No problem. I'm sure I'll meet them at some point."
After Bart returned with two more plates of food, the conversation took a different turn. Tim didn't care particularly. He was happy with how the conversation went. If Midoriya and Ururaka were the average perspective of his classmates, then he looked forward to meeting the rest of them.
After some questions from Izuku, who'd finally stopped stuttering, Bart mentioned he was the late Flash's "Nephew." And that the current flash, Wally West, wanted Bart to come here for school. For how talkative he was most of the time, Tim took note of how succinct he was with his answers.
…
There was one outlier in his classmates primarily positive formal introductions. That would be Bakugo. He didn't talk to Tim for the entire day. But as the classes ended for the day and students began to shuffle toward the exit, Bakugo seemed to head off Tim's route out.
"Now listen here you quirckless-" He started. Tim mentally zoned out his words from there. He was only repeating things Tim had heard before after all. Something about worthlessness, then about being better than him, all with more profanities than he had even known Jason to use in one sitting.
Eventually he finished, only to walk away before Tim could respond. "Well, he was pleasant." Tim muttered sarcastically.
"That's one word for it!" the muscular teen from the exam said coming up behind him. "Name's Conner."
"Tim"
"So, are you used to being a doormat, or is that new?" The newly identified Conner asked him with raised eyebrows.
"What would the point be of rising at him? It would just get me in trouble and give him more ammunition against me."
Conner looked at him smirking. "Sure, whatever you say slim. Nice job in the exam by the way."
Tim smirked before responding. "Thanks. You too. And as for Bakugo, I've been dealing with people like him for over a decade now. If he keeps this up, I can deal with him just fine." He smiled as he left the room.
Conner laughed to himself. Something told him this guy could take care of himself. "Well, guess he'll be fine after all."
So, for the most part I liked how this came out chapter. Any guess who Ururaka was trying to introduce to Tim?
Funny thing happened. I must have been tired or something, but I meant to type pigs, but instead put sheep. Eventually I noticed it and thought Bart would be perfectly in character saying it wrong, so I guess I had Tim correct me too there.
I hope I kept people in character with their reactions. I feel Deku would be the quickest to approach Tim due to his own past. Ururaka being one of the generally nicer members of 1A would most likely be next. Bakugo's reaction seemed fairly obvious to me. Granted, he's still too cautious to actually pull any of the direct bullying he did to Izuku.
As for Bart's "origin", I'm sure most of you know where that's going.
Next Time we'll see a couple more reactions to Tim, and the start of MHA's next arc.
