Hollypaw lifted her head proudly, listening to her leader give her brothers their new apprentice names. They apprentice ceremony was that day, and the three where well groomed, and ready to become apprentices. Hollykit's brothers had gotten over their small cough, and Scratchstar had decided to make them apprentices a little earlier.

Splashkit, or, Splashpaw now, had gotten Breezefire, which had made Hollykit furious, and Eaglepaw had gotten Copperhawk, which in Hollykit's opinion wouldn't help his ego. Hollykit squirmed, eager to meet her mentor. Scratchstar hadn't given her a mentor, or an apprentice name yet, and Hollykit was getting impatient. But after the crowd of cats had quieted, Scratchstar beckoned her over, and Hollykit bounced happily, until she realized she was about to become an apprentice, and that was the action of a kit. She walked slower, and when she was only about a tail length away, Scratchstar began;

"Hollykit, you have reached the age of six moons, and you are ready to become an apprentice. From this day on, until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Hollypaw. Your mentor will be Darkstep."
Hollypaw was both surprised and pleased. She looked at Darkstep for reassurance that he was okay with her, and he nodded, smiling. Scratchstar continued in a bored voice.

"Darkstep, you were apprenticed by Harshfoot. You have earned the respect of your clanmates, and I hope you can pass on all of your skills to Hollypaw." Hollypaw waited a moment, to make sure it was time, and then padded towards Darkstep, and touched noses.

"I-I hope I will make you proud," Hollypaw whispered shyly. She looked up to see Darkstep look at her with mild admiration.

"I know you will." He whispered back, though Hollypaw could barely hear him, through the clan's shouts;

"Hollypaw! Splashpaw! Eaglepaw!" she spotted her parents shouting proudly, and she ducked her head in embarrassment. When they had stopped, she looked up and saw a brown and white apprentice pad towards her.

"Hey, Thornpaw," Hollypaw said.

"Hey," He said. "You did a lot better than me in the cerimony.

Hollypaw tilted her head in confusion. "What happened?"

Thornpaw laughed. "I tripped on Scratchstar,"

Hollypaw luaghed too. "I remember that,"

"Well, you better meet the gang." He meowed. Hollypaw knew he meant the rest of the apprentices. Thornpaw led her through the whirl of cats. They went past the pile of freshkill, and they went behind the elder's den with a quick nod to the elders, and stopped at a group of apprentices. Thornpaw cleared his throat softly, and the apprentices lifted their heads.

"Hey guys, you missed the apprentice ceremony! Hollykit, Splashkit, and Eaglekit became apprentices,"
The mood brightened immediantly, and soon the cats were swarming around Hollypaw, with kind meows of hello. A pretty silver tabby she-cat padded closer to Hollypaw, and rested her tail on Hollypaws shoulders.

"Hey! You're going to love being an apprentice!" she meowed happily. Hollypaw smiled. She seems nice, she thought.

"I'm Moonpaw, this is Sunpaw, Mallowpaw, Pinepaw, Shadepaw, and- "Hollypaw gasped.

"Lightpaw! How are you? I am so sorry, I should've seen you in the medicine den," Hollypaw blurted, feeling ashamed that she hadn't thought much about her yellow friend. He laughed, and shook his head.

"Oh no, Stalkleaf wasn't letting anyone in. and besides, I'm alive now, right?" Hollypaw giggled nervously. She still felt bad, and she didn't feel at all better about ignoring him.

"Y-yeah, I guess. I just feel bad, it must have been so boring being cramped in the medicine den!"

Lightpaws eyes grew into wide circles.

"It was horrible! Stalkleaf snores like a bagger who had a tree stuck up his throat!" he meowed in mock horror. Everyone purred, and Moonpaw started trembling in fake horror.

"I hear he eats kits at night!" Moonpaw whispered, with a glimmer of amusement in her eyes. The ale yellow she-cat Moonpaw had called Sunpaw, leaped over, and was leaning against Moonpaws shoulder. Lightpaw gasped, and twitched his tail in fake nervousness.

"I-I hear he can kill the most experienced warrior! With one paw!" he gulped. All the cats laughed except Sunpaw, who was staring everyone in the eyes, looking annoyed, and some-what defensive.

"Oh sure, that's why Hollypaw is here, because Stalkleaf ate her. And he never had warrior training, remember? You all are mouse-brains! Stalkleaf isn't that bad, really," She meowed exasperated.
Hollypaw tilted her head in confusion. Why was Sunpaw so touchy? The apprentices were just joking. Moonpaw nodded, and shrugged.

"I guess, but its still fun to joke about," she meowed, pointedly at Sunpaw. Sunpaw rolled her eyes.

"What if it were you? or any of you? would you want to be made fun of by your own clanmates? He is a senior medicine cat, and he should be respected." She scolded, turning away, a padding up to her mentor, Wolfshade.

Hollypaw stared after her in amazement. She's touchy, Hollypaw thought, though mentally taking a note to look to her if she was ever turned on. Before any cat could say another word, they heard
Scratchstar call a clan meeting. The apprentices went over to the clearing, and waited for everyone else to gather. When they had, Scratchstar started;

"As we all know, tonight is a gathering. But we must be wary. We must not let the other clans think we are weak, or vulnerable. I will leave a few more than usual cats here, to guard camp." Some cats looked at each other nervously, but she continued. "Those who are coming, gather by the camp entrance. We leave at sky break." The cats dispersed.
Hollypaw sat there, waiting for orders. She had no idea if Scratchstar wanted her to go, or leave. She jumped when she felt fur brush against her side. She whipped around to see Thornpaw, and sighed.

"Oh, its just you. don't scare me like that!" she hissed playfully.
He purred.

"Well, I thought I'd get you before we left without you. you do want to come, right?" Hollypaw stared, puzzled at him.

"Sorry, were?"
He rolled his eyes.

"The gathering, duh mouse-brain." She smiled happily, and went to the group of cats. Suddenly she was nervous. She had never met any cat outside of her clan, and she had heard the elder's stories about them. You have Thornpaw, she reassured herself. He wouldn't let anything happen to you. she smiled at him. He was like a big brother to her, and she trusted him.

Thornpaws POV

Thornpaw smiled to himself. Hollypaw was so kind, and funny, he had no problem making friends with her. He watched as she jumped over a fallen tree with ease. Her fluffy red fur shone silvery grey in the moonlight, and her eyes looked even more beautiful. He sighed, and almost tripped over his paws. Hollypaw likes Lightpaw, he reminded himself sadly.

So what chance do I have?
