Hopelessly Confused
By Taliya
Katou Haru sighed as he waited for his cup of instant ramen to microwave in the conbini. It spun lazily in the machine, humming contentedly. After it dinged, he carefully pulled his lunch out and took it outside, where he could sit on a bench to eat during his midday break. It was a gorgeous September day, with blue skies and a refreshing breeze. Haru broke his hashi and muttered thanks before he began slurping the noodles.
A motorcyclist sped by at a speed that was both far past the approved speed limit and dangerous to the pedestrians on the sidewalks. He frowned but remained where he sat, knowing that by the time he jumped into his car to give chase, the man would be long gone.
That thought was instantly wiped out when he spotted a six-year-old on an absurdly fast skateboard, of all things, tailing the motorcycle with a determined glare. What the—?!
Haru instantly flung the cup of noodles into the trash and leapt at his car, hoping he would be fast enough to follow after the boy. He could not, in good conscience, allow the child to continue this high-speed chase on a skateboard. Within a minute of dodging traffic and toeing the line between speeding through red and yellow traffic lights, he managed to catch up.
The detective had to admit to being thoroughly impressed with the boy's skill on the board, and he wondered what sort of mechanism was powering it since there was absolutely no way any human could kick a skateboard to such speeds. The boy had not kicked off the street once since he had set his sights on him after catching up.
The odd trio of vehicles sped towards Shinagawa's warehouse district along the shore of Tokyo Bay. More than once, the motorcyclist tried to lose his tail by making sharp and unexpected turns. The boy repeatedly proved his abilities on the board. Haru had to do some creative drifting that had him nearing a heart attack each time. If the boy can keep up, then so can I! he chanted repeatedly in his head. Also, where the hell are we headed?
The motorcyclist swerved to a halt once he hit a dead end with the water as the only way forward. The kid also skidded to a halt, and Haru barely managed to slam hard enough on the brakes to keep from running the boy over. He yelped as the motorcyclist pulled a gun from his jacket and fired in both his and the boy's general direction.
"Shit!" he muttered, ducking behind his steering wheel as bullets pinged off his vehicle's grill. "I need to get the kid out of the line of fire!"
Taking a breath, he yanked the lever on the door to open it and tumbled out right as he heard a snarled, "Eat this!" Which was immediately followed by a crash of metal and the thud of a body hitting the concrete. Haru stumbled around his car door, ready to duck and run in order to rescue to boy, but instead found the child running towards the motorcyclist, who was now sprawled on the pavement with his bike lying on the ground. There was also an inexplicable soccer ball present that even now was rapidly deflating into a puddle of black and white.
"He's out cold," the boy said after lifting the visor, and Haru was discomfited with the dismissive ease in which the boy had handled what had very much been a potentially deadly situation. "Had to chase him down since he was actively evading arrest for murder and he took shortcuts that the police cars were unable to follow."
"But—that doesn't mean you should have," was the first thing Haru's brain spat out. The boy hummed and stood from where he had knelt beside the apparent murderer, and Haru saw the satisfied grin that curved the boy's lips. "Who… who are you?" he asked, hopelessly confused.
"Edogawa Conan," he replied confidently, glasses lenses glinting, "tantei sa."
Author's Note: A very short piece, but one that introduces two detectives from different fandoms that I just could not resist writing. I have the feeling I'll be writing more collisions of these two fandoms since there is so much crossover potential! I hope you enjoyed it.
