It's time for the premiere of TV Amazing Race! In this episode, 12 teams begin the journey of their lives as they race around the world for $1,000,000! ROLL IT!

We begin with an early summer morning in the southwest United States. It's a dry, arid landscape with cacti everywhere. We find ourselves in Phoenix, Arizona. Atop Camelback Mountain is where we find our host - Phil Keoghan.
'This is Phoenix, Arizona. Located in the deep southwestern region of the United States and known for its dry, humid landscape, it is famously nicknamed 'The Valley of the Sun...'
"And from here, one of the hottest cities in the country - 12 teams will embark on a race around the world for $1,000,000."
We now cut to the base of the mountain where a set of trucks were transporting teams to the starting line.
'The teams are now making their way via Ford Ranger to the starting line at the top of Camelback Mountain. The 12 teams are...'
The first team consists of 2 high school age teens - one a brunette in a red and brown sweater vest with tan shorts, his teammate a ginger in a black halter top and white coat with a pink skirt.

"Milo and I have been best friends since we were little kids and we've been dating since our freshman year of high school. He deals with the worst possible thing happening to him every day and I feel that's prepared us for the race because we can be resourceful and we can prepare for any eventuality."
"Melissa and I have been a team since we were kids. We've survived Murphy's law together. We've stuck together through thick and thin and with her, I feel like I can do anything. I've found the one I want to spend my life with...and I'm gonna ask her to marry me on the race."

"Which team will muster the right combination of brains, brawn and teamwork to cross nearly 50,000 miles? Who will win...THE AMAZING RACE?"
Phoenix, Arizona: June 20th, 5 AM
High atop Camelback Mountain, the twelve teams lined the majestic peak. On the base of the mountain were 24 identical backpacks and corresponding fanny packs. Just across from the teams, about 2 yards away, was host Phil Keoghan.
"Welcome to THE AMAZING RACE! You're about to begin a physically grueling, mentally draining, life-changing adventure! You better be ready because this race will test you like you've never been tested before. There are 13 legs on this race that will take you to 11 countries, travelling over 50,000 miles and if there's one thing I can promise you...there'll be lots of surprises along the way. The winners of this first leg of the race will win an Express Pass...and a SECOND EXPRESS PASS that you must hand over to another team before the end of the 5th leg. There's on more reason you need to bring your A-game to the start of this race. Even though there are 2 flights waiting for you at Sky Harbor Airport, the first flight only has room for 5 teams and arrives 30 minutes earlier. The fact is, I will be eliminating MOST OF YOU. But if you make it to the final leg and cross the finish line first, you'll win THE AMAZING RACE and $1,000,000! Your first challenge is behind me..."
Phil pointed to a rack of 200 golden statues in the shape of the state of Arizona.
"...each of these golden statues of Arizona hides a flag on its base, but only 12 hide the flag of your first destination. When you find one, show it to me and if you're correct, you can run over to the rappel lines and make a daring 20 story rappel off this mountain. Then you can grab your bags, make your way to one of the new Ford Explorers parked out front and make your way to Sky Harbor Airport. Is everyone ready to race?"
The 12 teams cheered loudly as Phil finished explaining their challenge. Once the last of the teams got into the ready position, Phil raised his right arm.
"Alright. The world is waiting for you. Good luck...travel safe...GO!"
On that command, 24 sets of legs began a full-fledged stampede to the rack behind Phil. Milo and Melissa quickly found a statue with a white flag and red dot on the base and showed it to Phil.
"Milo and Melissa, that is correct."
Phil confirmed their correct answer and handed them their opening clue.
"YES!" Milo and Melissa cheered as they began their 20 story rappel off Camelback Mountain.
"OH MY GOSH, MILO! WE'RE ON THE AMAZING RACE!"
Back at the Start Line Task, Yusei and Crow and Jim and Tim found statues, but they were incorrect. The next team to find a correct statue was Dan and Runo.
"Tell us something good, Phil! Tell us something good!" Runo cheered, handing the statue to Phil.
"Dan and Runo, that is correct."
With that confirmation, Dan and Runo took their first clue of the race and ran to the edge of the mountain. With their harnesses on, they began their 20 story rappel. Drake and Josh and Jim and Tim found the correct statue in quick succession after that.
"Drake and Josh, that is correct. Jim and Tim, that is correct."
The teams of brothers took their opening clues, got harnessed up and began their rappel off the mountain. Milo and Melissa reached the bottom first, grabbed their backpacks and opened their clue.
"Fly to Tokyo, Japan! Once there, make your way to Takadanobaba Taproom to get your next clue. You may only travel on one of these flights:
United Airlines flight 170, departing at 7 AM
American Airlines flight 1567, departing at 7:45 AM
HURRY! Seats are first come, first served!
You have $140 for this leg of the race."
After reading their clue, Milo and Melissa raced of to one of the Ford Explorers - Milo picked out the red one on the far left side as red is Melissa's favorite color.
"And we're off!" Milo declared as the duo drove off.
Dan and Runo, Jim and Tim and Drake & Josh reached the bottom next, opening their clue.
"Fly to Tokyo..."
"Fly to Tokyo..."
"Fly to Tokyo, Japan!"
"Which airline do you wanna shoot for, Runo?"
"Let's go for United."
"United flight, Josh?"
"Let's go for it!"
"Everyone's gonna go for the United flight, Tim."
"Follow the herd!"
Back at the Start Line Task, Zoey and Chase and Candace and Jeremy found the right statues, with Yusei and Crow not too far behind.
"Zoey and Chase, that is correct. Candace and Jeremy, that is correct. Yusei and Crow, that is correct."
After that confirmation, all 3 teams got harnessed up and began their rappel. Zoey and Chase hit the ground first and after reading their clue, climbed into the silver Ford Explorer in the middle.
"This is what we've been waiting for, Chase!"
"We're gonna win us $1,000,000!"
'Amazing Race' season 14-22 theme song begins...
(The first team we see is a brunette boy in a sweater vest and a curly haired ginger girl in a black top and white jacket running from a concrete drainage pipe. After taking heavy duty bungee from the boy's backpack, the duo land safely at the front door of their school, kiss and smile)
MILO & MELISSA...
(A sweet blonde girl walks the quad of her school; next to her is a bushy haired boy about her age, riding his bike as he slams into a pole. The girl picks him up and they smile)
ZOEY & CHASE...
(We see 2 boys working in their lab; their experiment starts glowing green before exploding. Now covered in ash, the twin boys look to the camera and smile)
JIM & TIM...
(We now see a brunette boy and a bluenette on an interdimensional battlefield, throwing multicolored spherical game pieces at their opponent. After landing their throws, they kiss and smile and the camera)
DAN & RUNO...
(At a movie theater in San Diego, we see a boy working hard at the snack counter and another wooing a girl with his guitar. After the boy working at the snack counter snaps at the guitar playing boy, presumably his brother, the duo hug and smile)
DRAKE & JOSH...
(Two preteen boys - one with spiked purple hair, the other with messy ginger hair - are seen trying to escape from the purple haired boy's house through the use of the purple haired boy's screwdriver. Once they make their escape, the duo celebrates, high fives and smile)
TOMMY & CHUCKIE...
(We see a teenage couple - the girl with long ginger hair, the boy with blonde hair - running on the beach. They then turn and smile for the camera)
CANDACE & JEREMY...
(At a skate park, we see 2 teens in a skate race; after crashing into each other, the laugh and smile at the camera, skateboards in hand)
OTTO & REGGIE...
(We now see 2 teens in Duel Runners trying to outrun Sector Security. After a Stardust Dragon blasts the Security forces to the scrap heap, the duo stops their Duel Runners side by side for the camera)
YUSEI & CROW...
(In New York City, a veteran police detective and acclaimed writer are chasing down a wanted fugitive. After the writer makes the takedown and arrests the felon, the two smile for the camera)
RICHARD & KATE...
(On a high school football field, a large, blonde teen launches a pass to a black haired Asian teen, who catches it. After making the play, the two chest bump)
DASH & KWAN...
(Finally, two African-American girls are fighting off armor-clad ninjas; after bringing down the ninjas, the girls stand back to back for the camera)
ABBY & CREE...
(We now see pictures of exotic locations flashing away before we're presented with the solid map of the globe and the yellow-lettered logo of...)
THE AMAZING RACE
5:30 AM
Candace and Jeremy had hit the ground and ran to one of the Ford Explorers after reading their clue. Yusei and Crow followed. Meanwhile, back at the Start Line Task - Otto and Reggie, Tommy & Chuckie, Richard & Kate, Dash & Kwan and Abby & Cree got their clues. Abby & Cree hit the ground first, followed by Tommy & Chuckie, then Otto & Reggie, then came Dash & Kwan.
5:50 AM
Milo and Melissa got stuck in rush hour traffic for about 20 minutes before finally breaking free. By 6:15, they had reached Sky Harbor Airport. The duo quickly made their way to the United Airlines counter.
"We need 2 tickets to Tokyo!" Milo told the receptionist. Sure enough, they got their tickets quickly, becoming the first team to get tickets on the first flight.
Milo & Melissa - First on UNITED AIRLINES
Not too far behind them were Zoey & Chase, Jim & Tim and Drake & Josh. Just like Milo & Melissa, they got their tickets pretty quickly and in short succession.
Zoey & Chase - 2nd on UNITED AIRLINES

Drake & Josh - 4th on UNITED AIRLINES
After a footrace between Dan & Runo and Canderemy, it was Team Canderemy that got the last tickets on United, forcing Dan & Runo to get tickets on the American Airlines flight.

"Canderemy got us..." Runo started.
"And now we're going to have a 30 minute disadvantage against the 5 teams on the United flight...so let's hope one of them messes up on a task and we can catch up."

'All teams are now flying 7,800 miles to Tokyo, Japan. Milo & Melissa, Zoey & Chase, Jim & Tim, Drake & Josh and Candace & Jeremy are on the United Airlines flight, connecting through San Francisco, scheduled to arrive 30 minutes ahead of the American Airlines flight, connecting through Seattle, which carries Dan & Runo, Abby & Cree, Yusei & Crow, Otto & Reggie, Tommy & Chuckie, Richard & Kate and Dash & Kwan. When they land, they must travel by marked Ford Fusion to Takadanobaba Taproom to pick up their next clue.'
7:20 PM - Tokyo, Japan - Day 2
Milo and Melissa reached the taproom first. Inside the clue packet, they found a red envelope, signifying a Roadblock.
"Roadblock - Who's ready to duel?" Melissa read.
'Japan is home to many popular games; one of which...is Yu-Gi-Oh!, a game known for its exemplification of skill, luck and strategy. Here at the Takadanobaba Taproom, this popular card game serves as the first Roadblock of the race. In this Roadblock, one team member must pick a World Championship winning deck, then use that deck against one of the Konami game masters in a best of 3 match. If they win, the game master will hand them their next clue. If they fail, they'll have to wait out a 30 minute penalty before trying again.'
"Who does this one, Melissa?"
"I'll do it."
"Good luck, Melissa."
"Let's Duel, ya scrubs!"
Melissa and Milo went into the taproom, where Melissa chose the Ancient Gear deck and went right to work against one of the game masters, who used a Cyber Dragon deck. The game master got Cyber Dragon Infinity out first turn, but Melissa baited out the negation effect with Dark Hole before busting out Ancient Gear Chaos Giant through Hunting Hound's fusion effect and playing Raigeki to clear the field of the game master's monsters, dropping the game master to 1900 and forcing them to forfeit the first game as Drake & Josh found the cluebox.

As Drake and Josh found their way inside, they spotted Milo and Melissa working on the Roadblock.

That was the least of their worries as in came Zoey and Chase.

Back with Melissa - she had started game 2 of their match with Ancient Gear Chaos Giant on turn 1 and 2 face-down cards. The game master had gotten Cyber Dragon Infinity out again, tried to take Chaos Giant, but Melissa had stopped it with a combination of Effect Veiler and Fiendish Chain. As the game master ended his turn, Melissa played an Ojama Trio Trap Card to give her opponent 3 tokens, which she then proceeded to attack for game.
"MILO! I WON!" she called out as the game master handed her the next clue.
"Nice one, Melissa!" Milo responded as he and Melissa opened the envelope, revealing the blue packet of a Route Info.
"Make your way to Minato Mirai..."
'Teams must now make their way by marked Ford Mustang through the streets of Tokyo to Minato Mirai to pick up their next clue.'
"...CAUTION: DOUBLE YIELD AHEAD!"
"This is the first of only 3 Yields teams can use to stop another team from racing. At this specific point, one team can force any other team to Yield - that is, to stop racing for a predetermined amount of time. Any team that is forced to Yield must turn this hourglass upside down and wait for the sand to run out before they continue on, even as other teams may pass them. In a new twist, this is what's known as a DOUBLE YIELD. Here, 2 teams can force 2 other teams to Yield, potentially causing a dramatic shift in the standings of the race. Teams can only use their Yield power once during the race, so they need to decide when it's most advantageous to use it."

As Milo and Melissa left the taproom, Drake found himself struggling with his Cyberse deck.

"Come on, Drake! You got this!" Josh called out to his brother.
"Easy for you to say! I have no clue what this Link Summoning nonsense is!" Drake retorted. "The game's changed so much since we started playing it!"
Drake soon finds himself getting 2-0'd by the game master and takes a 30 minute penalty.
Chase too was finding himself struggling with his Rokket deck...
ZOEY & CHASE

"Man, I have no idea how to play this deck!" Chase groaned.
"Concentrate, Chase! Just play your game! Don't let that game master rattle you!" Zoey tried to encourage.
"A little late for that, Zo..."
Just like that, Chase was soundly dispatched and he took a 30 minute penalty. Chuckie, Yusei and Jim on the other hand, had no issues. Chuckie ran with Cyber Dragon, Yusei used Blackwings and Jim ran Dinos.

Kwan and Otto both got 2-1'd by the game master and were assessed 30 minute penalties, as was Richard. Jeremy and Cree, however, 2-1'd their opponent and got their clue while Dan 2-0'd his opponent, getting the clue in the process.

As the other teams left, Dash, Otto, Chase, Richard and Drake all served their 30 minute penalties and got back in the game. Drake lost game 1 but rebounded to win his match. Richard took another 30 minute penalty but won in his 3rd try, while Kwan, Otto and Chase all won in their 2nd attempts. But on the way to Minato Mirai...

"'Liss...I think we're lost..." Milo said to his ginger girlfriend.
"Now ya tell me..." Melissa retorted. "Let's ask this guy, perhaps he can help us..."
"Good idea...pardon me, sir. Do you know where Minato Mirai is?"
The local smiled and showed them the way to their next destination. It took Milo and Melissa 20 extra minutes to get there and in that time, Jim and Tim and Tommy & Chuckie passed them.

Melissa noted the Hours of Operation and decided against using the Yield. Candace & Jeremy, Zoey & Chase and Drake & Josh all followed suit. They were then followed by Yusei & Crow, Abby & Cree, Richard & Kate, Dan & Runo, Otto & Reggie and Dash & Kwan - all of whom noted the Hours of Operation: 9 AM - 9 PM.
9 AM - Day 3:
The sun rose early that morning. At 9 AM, the gates opened and every team rushed to the cluebox to grab their clues, ripping them open to reveal the red packet, signifying a Roadblock.

'This Roadblock requires teams to traverse the Minato Mirai valley and snap pictures of some of Japan's most famous characters - Pokemon! Teams must take part in Japan's Pokemon Parade, then use the provided smartphones to snap pictures of themselves with the 4 original starter Pokemon - Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and Pikachu. Once they think they have all the selfies, they must look for someone dressed as Pokemon anime protagonist Ash Ketchum. If all the photos are correct, he will hand them their next clue!'

Everyone struggled at first, but then they started to get into their groove. Milo quickly found Bulbasaur and Charmander with Squirtle soon following. Tim and Candace followed suit with Milo finding Pikachu first and getting them to the Ash lookalike. Tim and Candace got there afterwards. The Ash lookalike verified their pics and handed the trio their clues.

"YES! I'M A POKEMON MASTER!" Milo celebrated as he ran to Melissa, clue in hand. The duo ripped open their clue and found a blue Route Info packet...
"Travel by marked bicycle to the next Pit Stop - Yoyogi Park..."
'Teams must now make their way by marked tandem bicycle through the streets of the Shibuya Ward of Tokyo and find this place...YOYOGI PARK. This park on the site of the 1964 Olympic Village is now the Pit Stop for this leg of the race. The last team to check in here...MAY BE ELIMINATED!'

"Pit Stop time, Jeremy!"
But no sooner than they started on their way that Candace and Jeremy's bike tires burst! Since they didn't have anything to fix the tires with, they were forced to take a taxi to Yoyogi Park, passing Milo and Melissa and Jim and Tim along the way. Meanwhile, back at the Roadblock - Reggie, Crow, Dash, Runo and Zoey all had completed the Roadblock after facing some trouble of their own. The girls couldn't find Pikachu and Crow and Dash...couldn't tell a Squirtle apart from a Piplup. But they got through it and were now on their way to the Pit Stop. Back with Candace and Jeremy now...

They have arrived at Yoyogi Park to meet Phil Keoghan at the first Pit Stop mat. After being welcomed by the greeter, they await their placement.
"Candace and Jeremy, you're the first team to arrive...but there's a problem. You were told by your clue to travel by bicycle and you went by taxi instead. For that infraction, you have a 1 hour penalty, so you must wait that out before I can check you in."
Back at the Roadblock, Abby, Drake, Tommy and Kate finally completed it after varying degrees of difficulty - Abby, Tommy and Drake had taken more pictures of Pokemon than they would've liked and Kate...couldn't find any Pokemon to start This would set up a footrace to the mat after every team had gotten stuck in traffic on their bikes.

"Not one, but 2 Express Passes! 1 to keep and 1 to give to another team before the end of the 5th leg! Congratulations! Here come some other teams!"

Candace and Jeremy could only look on as team after team checked in. Their bicycle mistake could end up getting them eliminated right here.

That team was Tommy & Chuckie. They had Dan and Runo and Drake & Josh right behind them.
"We made it, Phil! Chuckie and I are both on it..."
"Tommy & Chuckie...you're the 6th team to arrive, however...Candace and Jeremy are waiting out a penalty over there, so that makes you team #5! Come on in, Drake & Josh! This makes you team #6!"

With each new team that checked in, Candace and Jeremy's sense of worry only grew as the probability of their elimination increased.
"Jeremy, I'm sorry, babe..."
"Candace, you had no clue our bike was going to burst like that."

"Abby & Cree...you're the 10th team to arrive, but since Candace and Jeremy are still waiting out their penalty, it makes you team #9! Come on in, Richard & Kate! That makes you team #10! Dash & Kwan...you're team #11!"

Phil had called Candace and Jeremy back over after Dash and Kwan had checked in. Candace and Jeremy knew this was bad news.
"Candace and Jeremy...you're now officially the last team to arrive..."
"Gone after one leg...sucks for Jeremy and I to get the boot because of a bicycle mishap..."
"I do have some good news...and that is that this is NOT an elimination leg. This is the first of 3 predetermined non-elimination points...and you're still in the race!"
"Don't do us like that, Phil! You scared the living daylights out of Candace!"
"While that may be, you do have a Speed Bump upcoming and you have to complete that before you continue on."

"The bike situation was our downfall today. Jeremy almost let off an expletive, which I never heard him do in all the years I've known him so that's how you know things got bad."
"We got a Speed Bump in the next leg, so we've got some adversity to deal with but it's nothing we can't handle..."
