Minya Aurë Alqualondessë

Eär né morna nu eleni nécë,
Alduo naltanen tinner i falmar,
Maiwi ve tinwi mi lómëa vilya

Eär sí luinë nu eleni haldë,

First Day of the Sun in Alqualondë

The sea was black under pale stars,
The waves glittered with the Trees' gleaming reflection,
Gulls like sparks in the dark air,
Danced around silver swan-ships.

The sea is now blue under hidden stars,
From the pale blue sky falls golden sunlight,
Gulls fly again but the ships are gone,
The mariners are gone! Waves are now empty.

The beautiful view doesn't comfort my soul,
I lament bitterly together with the forsaken sea.

Notes

About 4-5 years of the Trees passed between the Kinslaying at Alqualondë (Y.T. 1495) and the making of the Sun (Y.T. 1500). It corresponds roughly to 39-47 solar years (rounded to the shortest time span). I believe it's likely that the surviving Teleri didn't build new ships during that period and the sea remained empty. The ever-dark sea becoming blue with the first sunlight must have been a remarkable event to them.

Eärwen is only listed as the character because she's one of the two named Teleri in the classic Legendarium. It's possible that she is the in-universe author, but it could as well be written by any random poet from Alqualondë (and translated into Quenya).
