Author's Note: This chapter kind of goes along with the last one so I'm calling it Chapter 11 Part 2. As I said before, no Stiles this chapter but he will make an appearance in the next one. I don't have it pre-written like this one was so I'll get it out when I can. The mystery continues! :)
Unknown warehouse, Gotham City
Constantine dreaded the night. Not for any horrifying reason but because it was when supernatural activity was at its highest. That and his ghosts came to pester him more than usual.
When are you going to escape, John?
You know one time I was in a situation-
Aww you arse, ya did it again! Got yourself trapped now did ya-
"Shut up!"
Constantine banged his head against the wall. Days of listening to the same bloody whining. His magic reserves were still constricted, making the odds of escaping bleak. He could only hope Zee would find them. He had seen Jacket take her before he lost consciousness.
Better him than her.
He glanced at the kid across the room who was sitting quietly in the corner. He hadn't said much since they first met. He remembered enough to tell him that his name was Jason. But beyond that, the kid was as willing to share as much as he was willing to quit smoking.
A shadow appeared beside Jason causing Constantine to do a double take. "You're not one of my ghosts."
"I'm not, John. But I do know you."
Jason picked up his head, eyes directed at the shadow as if he could sense it was there.
"Reveal yourself, then. Don't hide in the dark."
"It's a woman." Jason said under his breath. "She's been here for a while."
Constantine pushed himself off the floor. "Well come on! Who are you? I'm not in the mood to play any games."
The shadow began to change, taking a more corporeal form and revealing an oh-so familiar face. "I think you know who I am."
He walked up to the ghost, hand raised to touch her, and when it phased through, touching nothing but air, he let it fall limply to his side. With a pained expression on his face, he said, "Claudia Gajos."
Claudia had been from another life back when he was a young and inexperienced magician. She had become somewhat of an occult tutor to him, teaching him the finer points of magic. Then they had gone their separate ways and he hadn't heard from her since.
"It's Stilinski now. Was, I mean."
"You're dead." He said, bluntly. Out of the two of them, he always thought he'd go first. She was skilled, less reckless, and an overall better magician.
"You were always quick to point out the obvious." She said with mirth in her eyes.
"What are you still doing here? Are you here to haunt me, too?"
The thought of someone else joining his ghostly entourage made him almost quiver. He didn't even remember doing anything to warrant it.
"Haunt you." Claudia repeated back to him in confusion. "Why would I want to do that?"
"I dunno. I wronged you. Got you killed. Etcetera. Take your pick. I'm not the most liked guy around."
"I'm not haunting you, John. I've come to ask for your help."
"Can't." He rolled up his sleeve, exposing the runes on his skin. "In case you haven't noticed, I'm in a bit of a fix myself. You've come to the wrong place."
"You've always been so stubborn. It made you a difficult student."
"Bugger off. I don't need this from you. I get enough of that from the others." Constantine moved to the other side of the room. Gaz appeared next to him, shaking his head in disapproval. He groaned and turned back to Claudia. "Alright, what do you want?"
"My son is in danger." She said, getting straight to the point. "And it's my fault. He was a sick baby, and when he was three, he took a turn for the worse. The doctors said he wasn't going to survive- "
His eyes widened. "Claudia, you didn't make any deals- "
"No. Nothing like that. I called you."
"Called me. I don't remember you ever calling me. I didn't even know you had a family."
"You wouldn't. Not after what I did."
There was a hint of shame in her voice. Constantine was quick to connect the dots. "You had no right." He said angrily. "No right to erase my memories."
"I did it to protect you. You have to understand. I couldn't have you blaming yourself for what happened."
He threw his head back, putting his hands on his forehead. "So you're telling me that I was somehow involved in your death and I can't even bloody remember why!"
"It wasn't your fault. I asked you to help me save my son. But now there is something inside of him. Something that people want and they aren't going to stop until they have it. You need to protect him, John."
"I told you already. I can't do anything from in here."
"I can help you with that. If you let me. The runes are for you not me."
"Asking now, aren't we?" He said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Oh, get on with it. Ghosts and their possession. I hate it. Especially when Boston does it."
Claudia placed a hand on his shoulder. His eyes glazed over and his spine tensed at her touch. Immediately, he felt a presence inside of him, cold and foreign, and most of all, unwelcome.
A struggle began for control of his body. He felt his consciousness being forcibly shoved down, like someone was holding his head underwater. But instead of fighting back, he let go, a cloud of murkiness filling his mind.
When it finally cleared, he became aware of the disconnect between him and his body. His legs moved but not of his own accord. Claudia had become the puppeteer and Constantine the marionette.
"That's better." Claudia said, making Constantine's hands into fists.
"Better get a move on. You can't stay in my body forever. And don't forget the kid."
"Jason, was it?"
Jason, who had been watching Constantine and Claudia with furrowed brows, could only nod hesitantly.
"It's time to get out of here."
"What the hell!" Jason yelled, speeding past the downed guards, following behind John/Claudia.
Claudia turned the corner, taking heavy breaths. The possession was taking a toll on his body.
Constantine noticed movement to his left. " Claudia…"
"I know." She ripped off some wood from an old block pallet. The edge was sharp enough and when the vampire lunged at her, she plunged it deep into its chest. "Stay close, Jason. Can't have you getting eaten. John's quite fond of you."
"Oi!"
"Thanks. I guess."
Then, Claudia stopped moving, his body freezing up like a statue. A grunt from Jason confirmed he was also in a similar state.
Footsteps came down the stairs from the platform above them. "Teekl, looksy who we have here. If it isn't John Constantine."
"Witch boy." Constantine growled.
"You've met." Claudia said.
"Unfortunately."
"Don't look so surprised. I am the Lord of Chaos." Klarion snapped his fingers when he reached the bottom. Constantine was yanked forward, feet sliding across the floor, and came face to face with the young witch. "Last time I checked, you were supposed to be locked up in your room." He grabbed Constantine's wrist and turned it over. "Still there. Interesting."
"Keep talking. He can't know you're here."
"Your handy work I take it."
"Came up with it myself, actually." He peered behind Constantine at Jason. "Who's this?"
"Don't you touch him!"
"Bastard!"
"Touchy." Klarion walked over to Jason, and with another snap Constantine was following behind him. "Go say hello to our new friend, Teekl." He put the cat on the ground, and it approached Jason. It took one whiff and hissed, jumping right back into Klarion's arms. Klarion soothed the cat, looking curiously at Jason. Then, he smiled big like a Cheshire cat as if he discovered a secret that no one else knew. "Oh! Oh, I get it now." He was full of giddiness. "He really is brilliant. Chaotic!"
"He? Is that who you work for?" Claudia asked.
"Pfft, please. I don't work for anyone. I follow where the chaos is and it's bursting here!"
"Tell him you've contacted Doctor Fate. That oughta knock him down a peg or two."
"I've contacted Doctor Fate!"
That seemed to stop the arrogant prick. "No you haven't. Your bluffing." He said, a tinge of fear in his voice. "He'd be here now."
"Are you going to take that chance?"
Klarion seemed to consider but then rounded angrily on Constantine. "You're lying. Nabu wouldn't have let me get this far if he knew." He threw out his arm, flinging Constantine against the wall. "Your silvertongue isn't going to get you out of this one."
Claudia muttered a quick spell, sending a blast of magic in Klarion's direction. Klarion deflected it easily with his hand.
"Is that the best you can do?"
"Get Teekl. It's his familiar. The only anchor he has to our world."
"I was just warming up."
Claudia sent a barrage of spells, each in quick succession, aiming at the cat perched on his shoulder.
Klarion growled in frustration. "Enough! Teekl, get him!"
The cat jumped off his shoulder and transformed mid-air into a large beast.
"Did you know he could do that?!"
"Didn't seem important to mention."
The cat knocked into Constantine, tearing into him with its large claws. Claudia tried to fight it off but her hold on Constantine was waning.
All of a sudden, Teekl was back to a smaller, domestic cat size.
"Ow, ow, ow."
Klarion was sprawled on the ground; Jason stood behind him with a long piece of metal held above his head.
Claudia picked up the cat and held it close to Constantine's chest, hands glowing with magic. "Your going to let us go if you want your cat back."
"No fair!" He yelled, banging his fists on the ground. "Stupid cat. Why'd you have to get yourself caught?"
"I mean it." She threatened him.
"Fine. You're free to go." Klarion reached out his hand for the cat. "Now give him to me."
"Don't do it."
"Not yet." Claudia motioned for Jason to get behind her. She walked backwards, making sure to keep Klarion in her line of sight. When they reached the side door, she pushed it open, letting Jason out first, and set the cat on the ground. It ran straight for Klarion.
"I'm not going to forget this Constantine...or whoever's possessing you."
He opened a portal with a wave of his hand and stepped through it with Teekl.
"Wouldn't dream of it."
Outside, they were met with a steady downpour of rain. Grey clouds blanketed the sky and he could see the city from where they were standing.
Claudia made no attempt to move. Water slowly seeped through his clothes, wrapping his body in a cold and damp embrace. He was uncomfortable to say the least, but Claudia didn't seem to mind. In fact, she seemed to relish in it. He felt his knees buckle and fall to the floor. "I've missed the rain."
"You would have liked London. "
A sudden jerk ran through his body; Claudia's control was starting to slip away. Unbidden tears ran down his face, and he realized that she must have noticed as well. "I have to go. Please, protect him for me."
"I will, love."
"It's been good, John."
And just like that, she was gone.
Constantine felt himself pulled roughly back into his body. He became hyper aware of his aches and pains, everything finally setting in.
"Is everything okay?" Jason asked.
"I have some business to attend to." He got up, limping in the direction of the sound of traffic.
"I can help."
"I don't need your help. Go home."
"I don't know where that is." Jason admitted.
Constantine sighed. "Alright, but first things first, I need to get Witch boy's markings off. Can't wander around Gotham on empty. I know a bar where we can find some help."
Enchantress' Castle
"Namrepus hctac! (Catch Superman!)"
Zatanna dashed forward just in time to soften the man of steel's fall; the vines defending the castle had thrown him clear across the room. They had gone through many of Enchantress' defenses but each one was more difficult than the last.
"This Enchantress does not want to be disturbed." Wonderwoman said, cutting down vines with her sword.
"You got that right." Finally fed up, Zatanna extended her arms. "Yaw eht realc, seniv! (Vines, clear the way!)"
The vines stopped their assault and creeped back into the walls.
They pushed on, venturing deeper into the castle. Her mind was only on Constantine. She still felt an overwhelming guilt about abandoning him at the warehouse. It had been months and they still weren't any closer to finding him.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump. The sound of soft beating reached her ears, stopping her dead in her tracks. It was coming from within the walls. The others didn't seem to notice; she put her ear against the stone and the steady beating turned to a thunderous drum.
Zatanna stepped back quickly. All of a sudden, they were bombarded by Enchantress' creatures. They phased through the walls and came up from the floor- green with angry little eyes and a wide set of sharp teeth.
It was a relentless wave of scratching and biting. Zatanna threw one off her back just as another snuck behind her and yanked her hair.
She cast a quick glance at the others. The Amazonian had lost her sword and had resorted to slamming them with her shield. Zatanna winced when they hit the wall with a loud thunk. Superman on the other hand was drowning under a mound of bodies.
"Go!" He yelled through a small gap. "Find Enchantress! We'll hold them-"
He was cut off as one jumped onto his face. Zatanna was about to cast a spell to free him when the creatures began to shake violently. They went flying in all directions, leaving a very frazzled Superman in the middle, eyes glowing a vibrant red.
"Go!"
Zatanna took off down the hallway, running as fast as she could. Enchantress had to be somewhere in the castle. For John, she had to be.
After wandering through a winding maze of passageways and rooms, she eventually found herself at the end of a dark corridor. She lit a nearby torch. In front of her, there were two intricately carved wooden doors.
Wails echoed from inside. Curious, Zatanna pushed them open, revealing a large throne room. It looked abandoned, cobwebs covering every inch of the room. And in the middle, hunched over a throne made of rotted wood and stone, was Enchantress. The hood of her green cloak cast a shadow over her face.
"Enchantress?"
Zatanna took a few hesitant steps towards her. The witch was talking to herself, muttering incomprehensible words as she rocked back and forth.
"Enchantress?"
Enchantress became unnaturally still; her back straightened with an audible crack. Then, without warning, her head snapped in Zatanna's direction, hood falling to her shoulders.
A gasp of surprise escaped from Zatanna as she took in Enchantress' appearance. A sickly grey color marked her complexion and she was extremely gaunt- almost skin and bones. White strands of hair fell over her face, covering eyes that lacked any sign of life.
She didn't know whether to feel disgust or sympathy at seeing the former shell of the witch before her. But before she could say anything, Enchantress jumped up from her throne and lunged at her.
"Thief! Thief!"
"I haven't taken anything!"
"Lies!" She swiped her hand at Zatanna, causing her to fall backwards. "You've come to steal from me. Just like that devilish man took my June Moone." Her face twisted in pain at the reminder of the theft. "June Moone!"
"Who stole June Moone?" The last time they were separated, Enchantress had gone on a rampage searching for her. Constantine had been the one to give her back as much as it hurt him to do it.
"Cursed by the gods, he was! To walk the earth and never know his face. He seeks his revenge, looking for the light in the dark. He'll kill us all you foolish girl! Leave! Leave!"
Zatanna was suddenly lifted into the air. It happened so fast; her back slammed into a window and she was falling fast down the side of the castle.
With the air knocked out of her lungs, any spells were out of the question. There was also nothing to hold onto to break her fall. She gritted her teeth and reached into her coat, hoping that the artifact that she was looking for was still there.
When her hand grasped cool metal, she pulled it out and aimed it at the rapidly approaching ground. 'Please work, please work, please work', she pleaded.
Her descent began to slow and slow until her feet were hovering just above the ground.
"Zatanna! Are you well?" A voice called from behind her.
Wonderwoman was exiting the castle, shouldering Superman along with her. They were a sight to see. Diana had scratch marks across her forehead, and Clark had a large gash across his uniform and was missing a boot, which probably got stolen during the fight with the gremlin-like creatures.
"I'm fine." Zatanna dusted herself off. "I just got kicked out."
"Did the witch tell you anything?" Wonderwoman asked.
"Enough." She touched her earpiece. "J'onn we're heading back. Rewothctaw ot su gnirb. (Bring us to watchtower.)"
