Shades Of Gray-Ch 10
When Derek and the team got to the hospital they ran over to the desk and Derek said, "Penelope Morgan, my wife, where is she"?, the nurse said, "she's in surgery right now and your baby is in the neonatal ICU". Derek said, "the baby, you mean she had the baby"?, the nurse said, "the baby was delivered by C-section on the flight to the hospital"
Reid looked at the nurse and said, "what can you tell us about the condition of Penelope and the baby"?, the nurse said, "the only thing I can tell you right now is that your wifes surgery started about 15 minutes ago". Reid said, "and the baby"?, the nurse said, "we have the best neonatal doctors here, your child is in the best hands possible".
Derek said, "when will we be able to find out more"?, the nurse said, "when your wifes surgery is over the doctor will come out and talk to you and if their is any news on the baby I'll let you know". Derek blew out a deep breath and said, "thank you mam", the nurse put her hand on his and said, "please call me Karen".
Derek said, "thank you Karen", the nurse nodded her head yes and then sat there watching as Derek and the rest of the team turned around and headed over to the waiting room to wait on news of the condition of Penelope and the baby. Dave put his hand on Dereks shoulder and said, "hang in there son, they'll both gonna need you".
Hotch said, "Garcia is a fighter, she's going to be fine and so is the baby", Derek said, "I hope your right man, I don't know what I would do without them, they are my world". Dave said, "I'm going to call your mom and fill her in on everything", Derek blew out a deep breath and then ran his hand over his head as he sat down.
The seconds turned into minutes and the minutes into hours and so far nobody had notified them of how Penelope or the baby was doing, Derek put his hands on his knees and said, "I don't even know if I have a son or a daughter". Reid walked over to the desk and said, "excuse me, Karen"?, Karen said, "yes".
Reid said, "can you tell us the sex of the baby"?, Karen smiled and said, "Penelope had a little girl", Reid sighed and said, "any news on the condition of Penelope or the baby"?, Karen said, "not yet but if you'll wait for a second I'll see if I can find anything out for you", Reid said, "yes please" as he watched Karen pick up the phone and start making calls.
It was only a few minutes before she looked at Reid and said, "Penelopes surgery has just ended and the doctor will be right out to talk to all of you". He said, "and what about the baby"?, Karen said, "right now they are still trying to stabilize her", Reid said, "when Penelope was shot did the bullet hit the baby"?, Karen said, "I'm not sure but hopefully soon they'll be out to update you on both Penelope and the baby", Reid said, "thank you" and then turned around and walked back over to join the others.
Derek looked up and said, "any news"?, Reid said, "on the baby no, they are still trying to stabilize her", Derek said, "her, did you say her"?, Reid said, "I did, congratulations you have a daughter". Derek smiled and said, "I have a daughter, we have a daughter", he wiped away the tears that were streaming down his cheeks.
Reid sat down beside Derek and said, "Karen said that Penelopes surgery is over and that the doctor will be out in just a few minutes to talk to us". Derek looked up at Reid and said, "thanks pretty boy". Reid put his hand on top of Dereks and said, "any time Morgan, any time".
After what seemed like forever they looked up to see a doctor walking over toward them, they all stood up as she said, "Penelope Morgan", Derek said, "I'm her husband, how is she"?. the doctor said, "my name is Natalie Styles and I'm your wifes primary doctor", Derek said, "how is she, is she out of danger"?, Natalie stepped closer and said, "we lost her several times on the table but were able to get her back".
Reid said, "how much damage was done to her and the baby"?, the doctor said, "the bullet hit her in the stomach and ricocheted and bounced off a couple of ribs and lodged close to her heart". Derek said, "h h her heart"?, Natalie said, "your wife is not out of danger, not by a long shot and the next 24 to 48 hours are going to be critical for her".
Derek said, "and what about my daughter, how is she"?, Natalie said, "your daughters heart rate dropped to 90 during the flight from the scene to the hospital so the medic and nurse on board decided it was the best option to deliver your daughter by C-section and by the time they got here with her she was in respiratory distress".
Reid said, "did the bullet hit the baby"?, Natalie said, "no but when Penelope coded on the helicopter it put the baby in distress too and by the time she was delivered she was put immediately into a heated incubator and monitored". Derek said, "and now", Natalie said, "and now she is still being monitored, her lungs weren't fully developed, she was almost 6 weeks early but we are doing everything we can for her and for your wife".
Derek said, "when can I see them"?, she said, "not for several hours but just as soon as we get them stabilized I'll send somebody to get you, I promise". Derek nodded his head and said, "thank you", Natalie said, "since it's going to be a few hours maybe you could go get something to eat and get some fresh air".
Hotch said, "that's a good idea, thank you", she said, "you're welcome" and turned around and walked back over to the nurses station and started working on paperwork. Dave walked back over and said, "your mom is on the way", Derek ran his hand over his head and said, "thanks man".
Reid said, "the doctor had a good idea, it's going to be a long night so let's go get something to eat and then maybe when we get back we'll be able to see Penelope and the baby". Derek said, "I really don't want to leave", JJ said, "their is a deli across the street so we can get back fast if anything happens", Derek reluctantly nodded his head and said, "alright but we can't be gone long".
JJ smiled and said, "deal" as she wrapped her arm around Derek and they followed the others out of the hospital and across the street and toward the deli.
