The Dance of the Summer Rain
Walking home from Station House No 4, William and Julia Murdoch step in tandem as they take the air, silently enjoying each other's company nodding to others as they walk by. The novelty of proudly walking together as husband and wife would probably never get old. Looking above him, the detective sniffed the air. "Smells like rain." Julia smiled at her husband, "Mmhmm, it certainly does." Trying to find quick places to find shelter should they need it, William turned to his wife. "I knew I should have brought my umbrella. Come Julia, let's hurry home." Letting her husband lead her, the good doctor allowed herself to be pulled along the street…that is until they passed a park. Ripping her hand from his grip, Julia Odgen Murdoch ran through the grass just as the heavens opened upon them, William worriedly running after her. Removing her hat and tossing it to the ground, the blonde woman let loose her hair and began to dance, laughing the entire time.
Her lilting laughter entranced him as he tried to protect one of his favorite hats under his suit jacket. "Julia! Come here! You'll catch your death out here!" His wife continued to run from him, her skirt and blouse becoming drenched in the downpour. Everyone above a certain age eyed the couple strangely while some young couples giggled as they watched from underneath store canopies. Thoroughly drenched, William Murdoch's equal and best friend danced to her own calypso beat as she turned in circles, feeling the cool rain fall on her face. Stopping in his tracks, eyeing his wife's lithe body as she moved rhythmically gesturing for him. "Julia! Come here at once! Everyone is staring!" Laughing, Julia removed her coat jacket tossing it onto a tree. "Oh come on, William! Dance with me!"
Running up to him and slipping slightly, the doctor took her husband's hat and tossed it next to hers. "I'll teach you!" William was mortified that he could see his wife's chemise through her white blouse, but he also wasn't going to complain either. Julia was truly in her element: free, uninhibited. His unbelievably beautiful bride. As he ran toward her, she danced around her husband, her hips tempting him as she chuckled at the silly grin he now had on his face. Feeling himself let go as the rain came down harder upon them, mud ruining his shoes, William Murdoch grabbed his wife by the waist crushing her towards him. Gasping excitedly, the doctor's hair comically plastered to her face. "Oh! William!" Slowly, he began to dance in tandem with her, their hips matching rhythm.
With a loud clap of thunder, William and Julia Murdoch danced and laughed. A true renaissance man, the detective dipped his wife and her back arching with dexterity despite her corset. How she managed that, he didn't know. She never ceased to amaze him. Parting from her, he grabbed her hands so that they danced and watched each other's feet, laughing at how terribly wonderful each of them looked. Surprising her, William turned her and with the help of the mud, she spun like a pro laughing out loud. Unbeknownst to them, a young couple, no more than in their teens joined the Murdochs along with an elderly couple who also danced to their own beats. It certainly must have been a sight to behold. The preeminent detective and the accomplished expert of a doctor, drenched, dancing and laughing with two couples at the beginning and end of their lives together.
Once again bringing his wife to him, William continued to dance pulling her as close as he possibly could. The doctor placed her arms around her husband, not stopping their dance as they sweetly kissed, smiling throughout. After they parted slightly, the detective eyed his wife, kissing her neck discreetly, "Well doctor, however shall we get warmed up?" Bending down to grab their clothing and hats, Julia laughed, "Well detective, I can think of a few ways." Throatily moaning, he chased his now running wife through the park and toward their home, laughing and screaming the entire way.
