Purvi couldn't help but smile as she remembered how she met Kavin and got to know him in past. Little did she know that they were actually going to get married and he would leave behind all his luxuries, just so that they can start an independent life of their own.
Bollywood has stereotyped the whole being on your own concept. No, Kavin's parents didn't ask him to leave the house because he chose to marry Purvi, someone who couldn't match them financially. No, Purvi's parents didn't ask Kavin to prove himself whether he could live outside of his father's luxurious kingdom.
NONE OF THAT BULLSHIT HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE!
People can choose to be on their own, independent, mentally and financially, without having any twisted fuckall reason behind it.
Kavin's and Purvi's parents were absolutely fine with their choices. Why did Kavin and Purvi decide to leave everything behind and come to Mumbai then? Because, there comes a point in time when you realize that, this is it. This is where I start doing something on my own. This is where I start building something of my own. Sure, my parents can still support me. But how will I ever learn to earn something all by myself then?
Being on your own, only makes you stronger and more responsible. You struggle, you fail, you stress but you learn. You grow. And you succeed!
" Purvi, kal kaunsi shirt pehenu? Yeh blue wali ya-"
Purvi was drawn out of her thoughts as she heard Kavin rumedging through the wooden cupboard they had.
" Blue pehen lena. Ek kaam karo, uss shirt ko aur uske sath jo trousers pehene wale ho, dono bahar nikal kar rakh do. Subeh jaldi uthke press karwa ke lana padega." Purvi told him as she finished setting their bed.
" Haan, mujhe utha dena. Main hi karwa launga." Kavin replied as kept the pair of clothes aside.
" Kal subeh maa aur papa ko phone karna hai, bhulna matt."
" Haan, nahi bhulunga."
" Aur haan, kal subeh apne haath se Bappa ke aage diya jala dena."
" Oh god, Purvi. Tum kahin jaane wali ho kya kal subeh?" Kavin asked her, as he checked his office bag for all the essential documents.
" Nahi toh?"
" Toh phir yeh saari cheeze tum khud hi yaad se karwa dena mujhse. Mujhe yeh sab kaunsa yaad rehne wala hai."
Purvi chuckled as she walked towards the door to lock it as they prepared to sleep. She grabbed the dustbin and stepped out of the door to keep it outside so that the cleaner can take away the trash early in the morning. Purvi had just put the dustbin on the floor and turned around to get back inside when she noticed a feminine figure standing near the stairs, few steps away from their door.
Resham stood there, her eyes watching Purvi as she moved even to the slightest.
Purvi was confused, it had been a while for them staying here now and she rarely saw Resham around. Her first interaction with the woman wasn't great either. Seeing her standing a few feet apart from her door was weird, if not anything else.
" Kuch.. chahiye tha aap ko?" She asked, quite obviously.
Resham stared at her for a second before slightly peeking inside the door. Okay now that was rude. You don't peek in someone's home!
" Maine pucha kuch chahiye tha kya aap ko?" Purvi asked again, unamused this time.
Resham didn't reply, just shifted her gaze from the door to Purvi. Purvi was a little annoyed by now. She chose to simply walk back in and close the door, completely ignoring the weird woman.
" Chalo yaar Purvi, almost bara bajne aaye hai. Kal subeh jaldi uthana hai, job ke pehle din pe koyi gadbad nahi honi chahiye."
Purvi thought of letting Kavin know about what just happened, but then again, it wasn't really that important. He was anyway all excited and a tad bit nervous about his first day at work. She didn't want to divert his mind to something so petty.
She laid down on the sheet as her back pressed against Kavin's chest. She felt him looping his arm carelessly around her stomach and his breath lightly tickling the back of her neck, not realizing when she fell asleep.
The morning was quite buzzing as both of them got up early, Kavin quickly made a run to get some eggs and bread, also got his clothes ironed from downstairs. Purvi quickly made breakfast for both of them and was preparing his tiffin when she heard a knock on the door.
It was eight-thirty in the morning.
Purvi turned off the stove flame as she paced towards the door while Kavin was just finishing getting ready for work. Purvi opened the door to find the Murthy's standing in front of her.
" Madhu aunty, Murthy uncle?" She greeted them with a warm smile.
" Good morning, kanna." Murthy smiled at her.
" Good morning uncle. Andar aaiye na please, aap bahar kyu khade ho."
" Nahi nahi, Purvi. Tum log ko late ho Raha hoga, toh hum log zyada time nahi lene. Woh hum toh Kavin ke liye yeh laaya tha."
Madhavi held out a small casserole with a glass lid.
" Yeh, kya hai aunty?" Purvi asked as she took the casserole from Madhavi.
" Payassam hai. Maine abhi just banaya Murthy ke liye. Fir hum ko yaad aaya ki aaj Kavin ka first day hai office mein. Toh yeh tum usko tiffin mein dena."
" Aunty iski kya zarurat thi, aap ne khamakha subeh subeh itni takleef uthayi." Kavin appeared from behind as he had clearly heard the conversation.
" Ayyo iss mein kya takleef!" Madhavi waved off.
" Tumhara Madhu aunty ekdam first class payassam banata hai, Kavin. Aaj tumhara first day hai na, sweet toh banta hai. Yeh tiffin mein leke jaana aur udhar sab ko khilana!" Murthy exclaimed making everyone chuckle.
" Bilkul Uncle." Kavin smiled before kneeling down to touch the old couple's feet.
" Arey arey, yeh sab kya karta hai tum. Hamara blessings toh hamesha tumhare sath hai. Good luck!" Murthy patted on Kavin's shoulder.
" Accha toh tum dono pehle hi pohoch gaye? Tabhi main sochu subeh subeh yeh awaaz kaisi."
Kalpana appeared on the doorstep as with a small bowl in her hand.
" Abb aap kya le aayi, Daadi?" Kavin asked as she stepped inside.
" Abhi abhi pooja khatam ki toh prasad leke aayi hu. Pehle prasad kha lo phir sab karna."
" Aap sab kyu isse itna bighad rahe ho, aadat pad jayegi isse." Purvi commented as Kalpana placed a small piece of besan laddu on Kavin's palm.
" Arey uska pehla din hai aaj kaam pe. Itna toh banta hi hai na." Kalpana replied while offering her blessings to Kavin.
" Haan Purvi, Aaj toh Kavin ka din hai. Tumhara first day hoga tab bhi-"
" Oh my god, aur mujhe laga main hi sab se pehle pohoch jaungi Kavin bhaiya ko wish karne."
Murthy was interrupted by Noor as she slipped off her shoes at the door.
" Lo, ek tum hi bachi thi!"
" Matlab kya yaar Purvi, main toh specially alarm laga ke uthi hu taaki bhaiya ko wish kar saku."
" Haan, warna toh humari Noor madam chutti ke din do peher se pehle uthati nahi."
Kalpana's comment brought out a laugh from everyone.
" Haan haan has lo. Main toh bas wish karne aayi hu taaki wapas jaa kar so jau. All the best, bhaiya. You'll do great today!"
Noor smiled at Kavin as she gave a quick warm side hug to him.
" Thank you so much!"
" In fact, aap sab ko. Aap sab itni subeh sirf mere liye aaye. I don't know how to thank you all."
" Ayyo Kavin, kya thank you, baba. It's not a big deal. Tum bas aaj khushi khushi jaana aur acche se kaam karna." Madhavi told him.
" Accha aap sab rukiye, main bas abhi hum sab ke liye chai laati hu." Purvi insisted.
" Nahi nahi, Purvi. Mujhe toh wapas sone jaana hai." Noor told Purvi.
" Aur hum toh abhi payassam khayega. Chai rehne do tumhe late ho jayega." Murthy added.
" Par-"
" Par var nahi, hum sab abb chalte hai. Tumhe late ho jayega warna."
To say that Kavin was touched by everyone's gesture was an understatement. Simple gestures mean so much sometimes. Simple gestures like sharing something that you cooked with your neighbours, or just bringing prasad, or even just simply wishing someone good luck. This isn't fancy. Yet so much more special than that.
Kavin quickly slipped on his shoes as Purvi packed his lunch.
" Nervous?" Purvi asked him, sensing the little bit of tension on his face.
" A bit, yes." He answered, honestly.
" Don't be. You'll be fine." She told him, handing him his bag.
He tugged it over his shoulder before taking a hold of both of her hands.
" Of course."
He didn't forget to steal a quick kiss from his better half before leaving for work. Purvi smiled ear to ear as she waved at him from the window.
Later that day, Purvi was browsing through her phone, checking the status of her online job applications. She had applied at so many fintech companies and so many banks, her resume was impressive as well but something or other would always be off.
If the job profile was good, the CTC would be less. If the CTC was decent, the job profile would be out of her scope. She was getting interview calls but things weren't simple.
Purvi thought of re-dressing her resume, which she did in the next twenty minutes and uploaded it.
The fact that Kavin had started working was fine, now she wanted to join him as soon as possible so that they could make further future plans.
She was about to keep her phone aside when it started ringing, the screen flashed her mother's name.
" Hello, haan mummy." She attended the call.
Soon she was engrossed in talking to her mother, catching up about things in Kolkata and telling her about Kavin and the hype about his first day at work. Eventually, she lost the track of time and ended the call around lunchtime. She had her lunch after having a quick call with Kavin, who sounded like he was liking the workplace.
She was taking a nap in the afternoon, today was a relatively free day for her as she didn't have any interviews and neither any household chores. She'd usually go and spend some time chatting at Kalpana's place or the Murthy's or call Noor over to watch something with her on her laptop.
Madhu and Murthy had gone to a friend's place as they left their keys with Purvi. Kalpana was probably resting as well after taking her medicines, and Noor was studying for her upcoming tests along with Avinash, the guy from the second floor.
Not having much of choice, Purvi decided to take a short nap herself. She wasn't a fan of afternoon naps but since she had waken up early this morning, she could use one.
It was around three when her sleep was interrupted. She thought she heard some commotion outside her door. She tried to ignore it and go back to sleep, but when it happened again, she had to wake up and sit straight.
The kids weren't around as it was the school time.
She clipped her hair back before walking towards the door. She unlocked it and glanced around to check if it was any cat or something.
There she stood again.
Resham, standing a bit far from where she stood last night. Watching Purvi, just like the other night. This time Purvi felt a mix of irritation and a bit of anxiety.
I mean, if you find a weird-ass woman staring at you twice in less than twenty-four hours, it's obvious for you to get a little bit stressed, isn't it?
Purvi was about to say something to her, but before she could, Resham turned around and stalked back to her place, leaving Purvi completely confused.
" Purvi? Kya Hua? Tum Aise kyu khadi ho?"
Purvi saw Noor as she walked towards her.
" Kya Hua? Kuch problem hai?"
Noor asked, sensing the tension on Purvi's face. Something was definitely weird.
