AN: Guess who's back, back again. this is a long one and there will be a second part to it at a later date.
Love it, Hate it let me know.
As always they only thing I own are the errors and the plot, otherwise I'm just playing with the characters.
Anyway enjoy.
Beckett Mitchell was currently sitting in front of a piano in a hotel in the South of France and wondering why he even let his half sister, cousin and Aubrey talk him into coming on this USO tour in the first place. Sure he had rooted and cheered for the Bellas through all four years of University but it still baffled him why he was here with them.
Beckett had been dubbed an honorary Bella by the Aca-Nazi her self during his and his half sister Beca's freshman year when it had been brought up everything that he had done behind the scenes to help the Bellas. When Beckett had found out that the bus was a rental, he immediately came up with a business proposition that offered free advertising for the dealership who was willing to donate a minibus, that was in working order, to the Barden Alumni stating very specifically who it was for. The dealership then would get a charitable write off come tax season, and free advertising all over Atlanta as well as Georgia, and along the eastern coast as the Bellas drove to New York for the ICCA National Championship competition every year, for as long as the bus was running. He had been the driving force in getting funding during freshman year for the Bellas' house to be brought up to code during the summer between freshman and sophomore year when he had found out that the house was falling into disrepair and the Alumni weren't willing to cough up the funding. Sophomore year, Beckett was living in the converted loft in the Bellas garage.
When Aubrey asked him how he had managed to achieve what he had for the Bellas, Beckett shrugged and told the older woman that at the end of the day the world of business is just one big hustle and if there was one thing that he was good at other than having the same ear for music that his half sister Beca had, it was hustling. It was how he had survived high school. Beckett let his fingers move over the keys as he continued to reflect over the last seven years.
Beckett Mitchell had been the result of a two week fling, while Warren Mitchell had been married to Sarah Mitchell. When Beckett's mother broke the news to Warren, the man broke things off with her claiming that he couldn't deal with two pregnancies as Sarah had found out that she was pregnant as well. A paternity test was done upon Beckett's birth and once it was confirmed that Warren was his father, he was given the last name Mitchell. Beckett was then officially Warren's bastard son.
Beca had had no idea that she had a half brother that was the same age as her. Beckett and his mother had lived in New Orleans, specifically the French Quarter. Beca and her parents had lived in a quieter area of the city and then when her parents divorced because surprise surprise, their philandering father couldn't keep it in his pants, Sarah moved her and her daughter back to Sarah's native Portland.
Beca and Beckett had met by sheer chance. Beckett had dropped a friend off at the airport in Atlanta when he had seen this tiny brunette dressed in skinny jeans, combat boots, a purple tank top underneath a plaid button up, looking extremely agitated, patting her pockets in search of a cigarette. He had watched as she had attempted to bum a smoke from a couple of people but had been laughed at because they had assumed she was much younger than she actually was. Beckett got out of his restored '67 Shelby GT500 Super Snake (the only other one in existence but unknown) and whistled to get her attention. Once Beca had looked at him with a scowl, Beckett held up the pack of cigarettes and tossed it to her. Beckett only smoked now and then. Usually when he was stressed or after he got stoned in an attempt to sleep for longer than two hours. He studied her from behind his sunglasses and when she actually looked at him as she tossed the pack back to him, he fumbled it for a second. He was looking into his own eyes, eyes that his mother had told him that he got from his sperm donor of a father. Beca had muttered and called him a weirdo under her breath but Beckett heard it clear as day.
"You're Warren Mitchell's kid." Beckett had stated rather bluntly once he had recovered from his shock.
"How could you possibly know that? You are a fucking strange weirdo that just showed up out of nowhere." Beca demanded.
Beckett smirked at her as he lit his own smoke before taking off his sunglasses.
"Because looking into your eyes is like looking in a fucking mirror and my mother told me that I got my eyes from my father."
Beca was speechless as she stared at her own eyes on a stranger's face. After her initial shock, Beca began to notice their similar facial features. The two quietly observed one another as they smoked. Beckett looked at the bags at Beca's feet and noticed that a pickpocket was attempting to come up behind her and grab the heavy looking messenger bag. Beckett glared at the individual who quickly changed direction and all but ran from the smoking area.
"You coming or going?" Beckett finally asked as he crushed his cigarette butt under his boot. He gestured towards her bags when she looked at him confused.
"Oh, uh, coming I guess." Beca replied awkwardly as she rubbed the back of her neck.
"Heading to Barden University?"
Beca nodded once again, surprising herself as normally she would have told a complete stranger to fuck off by now.
"Anyone coming to pick you up?"
"No, I was going to just get a cab." Beca replied.
"Get in. I'll give you a ride seeing as I am going there myself."
Beca mulled it over as she took in his appearance. Black relaxed jeans that had been worn and washed so many times that they had faded to a charcoal but looked soft to the touch. Like herself he wore a pair of combat boots. He was wearing a black wife beater under an unbuttoned silk button up that was a shade lighter than his eyes. His hair was a dark dirty blonde with natural auburn highlights when the light hit it just right, that was a messy undercut style, in fact it looked like he had stylish bed head. She mused that he obviously inherited his mother's hair colouring. He was also sporting a light scruff that actually worked well for him.
"Alright. But what is your name?"
"Oh right...umm sorry that was incredibly rude of me to not introduce myself. My nana, god rest her soul, would have skinned me for my poor manners. The name is Beckett Aiden Mitchell. Your half brother."
"I'm Beca Cooke Mitchell."
"Nice to meet you Beca."
Beckett had loaded Beca's bags into the backseat as his trunk was full of his shit that he needed for school. Soon he pulled out of the waiting area and drove away from the airport and towards Barden University. As they drove Beca felt comfortable enough to vent about being forced to go to University and how she found it hypocritical how the man who had left her and her mother when she was 12 thought he had the right to assert his parental authority and demand that she go to University instead of her going to LA like she had originally planned. Beckett had rolled his eyes and shook his head at her. Beca seeing the action called him out on it.
"Do you not realize how fucking angsty and whiny you sound right now? I mean seriously boohoo you are getting a free education. I get that you are angry and resent him for leaving you and your mom, guess what it happens. Use him for the free education. Not everyone is so lucky. If you don't immediately stand out from everyone else with your music, at least you can have a fancy piece of paper that entitles you to be paid more than those that don't have the degree. You act like your life was so hard living in Portland with your mother. Sure she may not have been around all the time because of her job to support the both of you but at least she was around."
He had paid for their order at the first window and accepted the bag full of food and their drinks. He quickly checked their food bag making sure everything was in the bag before he pulled away.
"Well what the hell would you know anyway."
Beckett levelled his half sister with a look of such disdain over her attitude that she physically recoiled from it, which pissed her off.
"At a very young age I had figured out that my mother hated me. When I was 6 my mother had gotten pregnant and had given birth to a healthy baby girl. I was so damn happy that I was going to be a big brother. The next eleven months were the happiest moments of my childhood. Then it all came crashing down the day before my birthday. I woke up and went downstairs to have my breakfast. We lived in a two bedroom apartment so I shared my room with my sister. My mother went upstairs to wake my sister up as it was past eight in the morning and my lil sis was always up babbling by seven each morning. I heard the worst, completely heart breaking sound come out of my mothers mouth. She had found my sister dead in her crib. I ran up the stairs to find out what was wrong. I found my mother rocking back and forth as she clutched her daughter's body to her chest. When she realized I was there, the look I got from her just reaffirmed what I already knew. She hated my existence and that she was resentful that I wasn't the one who died in their sleep." Beckett's hand shook slightly as he angrily fished out a cigarette and quickly lit it. He took a few drags to calm him down before he continued.
"Beca by the time I was 12 years old, I had been told repeatedly that it was my fault that your father left her. That if she hadn't gotten pregnant with me that she would have been able to convince him to leave your mother and marry her instead. Your father left when my mother was two weeks pregnant with me. A paternity test was done when I was born. Once the results came back confirming he was my father, he paid the hospital bill, signed his parental rights over and never looked back. I am his bastard son that he has never once acknowledged.
I had watched my mother spiral into a drunk alcoholic haze and never once did she crawl back out of the fucking bottle, eventually dying from alcohol poisoning. At this point I was living with my grandparents, the only people who ever showed me an ounce of love and affection. My grandfather taught me how to be a mechanic. I seem to be very mechanically inclined when it comes to cars. Anyway we restored this car to its full glory when I was 14. Sadly Papa passed away just after I turned 15. This car was his gift to me when I turned 16. The following year my Nana passed. I was emancipated as it was more cost effective for the state. I busted my ass in school to maintain a damn near perfect GPA and I got a full ride to Barden. I had to get an exception from the Dean in order to keep my car on campus seeing as I am only a freshman. As soon as I get settled into the dorms, I need to find a job or hopefully a paid internship. Gas and insurance won't pay for itself. The savings I have from running hustles in high school is running low." Beckett paused as they had pulled into the drop off area for students, and turned to look at his sister.
"You want to be mad at him, pissed off because he left, fine that is your right to do so because it fucking hurts. But be fucking grateful that he wants you in his life, that he went out of his way to bring you back into his life even if it feels like he's forcing his parental right on you. You are getting an opportunity 90% of the students here don't have, you will graduate debt free be it after only a year, the full four or even if you go on to do graduate studies. Take full advantage of that."
Beca had been pissed at him for calling her out on her whiny bullshit but she had eventually agreed with him that that was what she was being. A whiny angsty brat. She had found out that he was double majoring in business and music and minoring in psychology.
She had also discovered later in the year just how smooth of a talker her brother really was the night she got arrested and the days following. He had managed to get a copy of the security video within minutes of her being cuffed and had arrived at the police station minutes after they had put her in a cell. He convinced the arresting officers to watch the video showing how Beca had been trying to stop the fight from escalating when the trophy broke. It took another thirty minutes but Beca was finally released no charges pressed against her and her subsequent arrest wiped from the system.
Of course her father had found out about her getting arrested and told her that he wasn't going to help her to move to LA and that she was going to take the classes he deemed appropriate. When she had shown up in his room in tears, Beckett was livid. Once he got her calm and she had fallen asleep he quietly left his dorm and became a man on a mission. He ambushed Warren in his office and had a nice chat with the man. Beckett told Warren that he was going to allow Beca to take the classes she sees fit, that will help her gain an edge in the music industry because if he didn't, Beckett was going to let his employer and the Trustees know how he had abandoned his son as soon as he was born and never once tried to get in touch afterwards. How Warren had no intentions of finding his son as he had signed over his parental rights as soon as the paternity test confirmed he was the father of the boy. How Beckett would send copies of those legal documents as proof of his claims. Beckett took great satisfaction watching the man pale and had started sweating. Warren had quickly agreed. Beckett had smiled and leaned in to whisper in the man's ear a warning.
"I don't give a shit that you don't acknowledge me, you're just a sperm donor as far as I'm concerned, but your daughter is my sister and I am mighty protective of my family. You make her cry again and the next time we chat, I won't be as civilized." Beckett leaned back with a pleasant smile on his face, seeing the real fear in the man's eyes.
"I'm so glad we had this conversation." Beckett stated cheerfully before leaving Warren's office.
He had run to the coffee house on campus and grabbed Beca's usual order and a sandwich before heading back to his dorm. When he had got back, Beca had curled up with her arms around his pillow and it made him smile knowing he provided her some comfort and security. He woke her up, handed her the coffee and sandwich, forcing her to eat before sending her off to her Bellas practice. A week later she had come running up to him on the quad, engulfing him in a tight hug thanking him over and over again. She didn't know what was said and she didn't care, all she knew was that her half brother had stood up to her father for her and got him to back off. He had laughed it off and told her she was losing badass points by clinging to him like a little spyder monkey in front of everyone. Beca gave a small squeak, causing Beckett to bite back a laugh as she let go of him and threatened him to never mention it again.
During their freshman year, Beca and Beckett grew close to one another and by the end of the year, they acted as if they had been in one another's lives since they were babies. For Christmas that year Beca had given Beckett her old mixing board and modular drum pad as she had been gifted new equipment. Beckett had been making beats and music using her old equipment because he couldn't afford his own.
One day she had been messing around with a mix and noticed him frowning a bit at the sound. He had asked if she minded if he made a slight adjustment. Biting her lip she thought it over as it was expensive equipment and couldn't afford to replace it if it was damaged. Finally she saved what she had been working on before moving aside. Beca watched as Beckett manipulated the dials and switches with confident movements and quickly set a beat on the pad. She noticed him frowning again. She didn't understand why as what he had adjusted had improved what she had done and was actually the sound she had been trying to achieve. Beckett had taken his headphones off and gently picked up the portable pad and gently shook it causing Beca's eyes to pop out of her head. She was about to lunge off her chair to grab the machine when she realized that he had bent down and had gently shaken the machine next to his ear. At her 'wtf' look he explained that she had a loose connection inside and it was starting to cause distortion. Beca sat back stunned that she hadn't been able to hear the difference but he could. Beckett had left and came back with a small tool kit. He quickly took apart the pad, re-soldered the loose connections and put it back together. He created different beats and combinations until he was satisfied that everything was solid once again. After that day she let him use and fix whatever, when she wasn't using the equipment.
For his birthday she had quietly given him a new keyboard understanding that he didn't celebrate his birthday. Interestingly enough they had been born minutes apart. He was born at 11:55 pm August 13th while Beca was born at 12:02 am August 14th. They could have been fraternal twins for how amazingly similar they looked. They had come back to Barden early for their sophomore year. Originally she had flown to New Orleans and spent a week with him before they drove back to Barden. He had helped her move into the Bellas house and he moved into the loft that had been soundproofed.
It was during sophomore year that Beckett had gotten to know the ray of perpetual sunshine that was Chloe Beale. He had picked her up from numerous frat parties after Beca had called him for help in getting the super senior home. Halfway through the year she had called him one afternoon in tears begging for him to pick her up as she had just broken up with her boyfriend and he didn't take it well. When he got to where she was, she was sporting a red cheek, had a cut on her lip and was struggling to get away from her ex boyfriend. Beckett had jumped out of the car enraged that this guy dare put his hands on a woman in anger. Beckett had quickly restrained the ex and convinced the redhead to go get her things from her ex's place as Beckett was going to have a small chat about proper southern etiquette and what it meant to be a gentleman. When Chloe had come back out with a duffel bag full of her things that she had left there, she was surprised to see Beckett leaning against his car calmly smoking while her ex cowered away from the smaller man. Squinting she could see a wet spot covering her ex's crotch and her eyes widened at the fact that whatever Beckett had said or done, had caused her ex to piss himself.
Beckett had called his sister and told her to call an emergency Bellas meeting saying that it was for Chloe. Once she was safely in the car Beckett spoke a few words causing Chloe's ex to scurry off into his apartment. Beckett got in the car, turned the radio on and handed her a small package of Kleenex for her lip that was still bleeding a tiny bit before pulling away. By the time he had pulled up to the Bellas house, Chloe had cried herself to sleep. Sighing, he picked her up and carried her into the house. He was met at the door by his sister and 8 other worried Bellas. Gasps were heard as he carried their co-captain into the house, Beca directing him to Chloe's room. He gently laid the redhead down, removing her shoes and covered her with the extra blanket she had on the end of her bed. As soon as the door was closed Beca had grabbed him and dragged him into her room demanding an explanation. He told her what had happened when he arrived. Anything that happened before then, she would have to ask Chloe. He left her room, went down the back set of stairs to avoid the other girls. Beca had followed him out of the house as he had told her that the bag of Chloe's things was still in his car and he had to work later.
When he got home later that night he was surprised to find both his sister and Chloe in his loft. Apparently after watching a few movies with the Bellas just having a girls night to try and cheer her up, Chloe had fallen asleep on the couch. Beca had stayed in the living room with her and when Chloe woke up frightened, almost hysterical, rambling that her ex was coming for her Beca had tried to calm her friend down. Eventually Beca had finally led the redhead into the loft and got her curled up in the queen bed while Beca stretched out on his futon. Beckett had tiredly nodded, grabbed his sleep clothes, told his sister to take the other side of his bed and he would crash on the futon for the night, before hoping in the shower to wash the smell of the night club off of him.
For the next few weeks, every other night Chloe would end up in his loft after having a nightmare. Beckett made her feel safe even if he wasn't there, just the smell of him was enough. On the nights he was at the club, he usually came home to find both Chloe and his sister in his loft. Eventually the nightmares stopped and Chloe was able to sleep through the night. Chloe ended up opening up to Beckett and he learned what lay behind the facade of eternal pep that she constantly exuded. He got to know the frightened young woman who had no idea what she wanted to do so she flunked Russian Lit to give her another year of safety. He got to know that yes she was honestly a positive person at heart but at the same time it was a mask to hide deep insecurities. As he learned more about the redhead, Beckett became smitten. By the end of sophomore year, he was dating the redhead and she had failed Russian lit again to stay at Barden with him.
They were together all of junior year and had a minor fight at the beginning of Senior year as Chloe had become irrationally jealous over an innocent situation. Beckett had been out on the quad waiting for Beca and the girls to let him know how the meeting went when he heard a familiar squeal. Turning around he braced himself and laughed as a young leggy brunette flung herself at him. He spun her around in a small circle letting her happiness wash over him before he placed her back on her feet.
"Jesus Kiddo you need to stop growing, soon you will be taller than me. Is your mom still here or did you shake her loose?" Beckett greeted her before kissing her cheek.
Chloe having watched the interaction came storming over and made a very public display of claiming Beckett in front of the young brunette. Chloe knew that her boyfriend hated large displays of affection in public but she couldn't help it, for the first time in a long time, she felt threatened by another woman. Beckett pulled away from the redhead and gave her a look letting her know that he wasn't happy with her actions. Turning away to look behind him he called Beca over and introduced her to the brunette.
"Becs, this is my cousin Emily." Beckett made sure to put extra emphasis on the word cousin and Chloe was immediately ashamed of her actions.
They had all walked back to the Bellas house, Beckett leaving to go to his loft while the rest went into the house. He told Emily he would talk to her later but he had to leave as did Beca. Chloe, still feeling ashamed of her actions, went out of her way to get to know Emily and when she found out who Emily's mother was she was ecstatic. She had the young girl sing for the Bellas as a formality. As the young woman was a Legacy she was automatically a Bella even though the Bellas were technically suspended and not competing for the year.
By the time graduation came around, Chloe and Beckett had split up. She had gotten mad at him for not telling her that he knew about his sister's internship when she found out at the retreat she had the Bellas go to in order to find their sound again. The retreat had helped save the Bellas but it had been the end of their relationship. After graduation Beckett went back home to New Orleans. He spent the next year renovating his grandparents' old apartment that they had bought when they were his age now and the property had been left to him when they had passed. It was considered prime real estate as he owned one of the biggest apartments in the Pontalba building and it just happened to be the corner apartment.
Beckett worked as a mechanic restoring classic cars during the day and DJ'd in the French Quarter at night. Both jobs allowed him to set aside money. Once a month he would spin at the hottest club in the city. Emily would visit him on spring break and would stay with him for a couple of weeks during her summer breaks. Beckett would drive to her competitions on the weekends. He would fly Beca out for Christmas and New Years as Amy would be with her flavour of the week and Chloe would go back home to her parents in Tampa. Beca had a final falling out with her father shortly after graduation as he still couldn't fathom that she was pursuing her dream of becoming a producer and gave her an ultimatum. Beca chose her dream and moved to New York with her two best friends.
He had flown out to New York after she had called him crying that she and Jesse had finally broken up. He spent a week with her, cheering her up, going out to her favourite pubs and bars getting her drunk and letting out her emotions. Beckett knew that she wasn't upset so much over the loss of Jesse as a boyfriend but the loss of someone who used to be a really good friend. During that week he had reconnected with Chloe. She had apologized for hurting him and being selfish by expecting him to choose between her and Beca.
Beckett and Chloe had slowly rekindled their relationship. They weren't exclusive because of the distance, that was Chloe's choice, but neither of them was seeing anyone else while they were apart. Beckett had flown out to New York after Emily had begged and Aubrey demanded, after he had initially declined, as he was an Honorary Bella and that meant his presence was mandatory for the reunion at the aquarium. Turns out there was a misunderstanding between the old Bellas and Emily. Beckett had been sweet talking an investor for Emily during her performance when he had overheard Chloe's comment about how the younger Bellas had boyfriends. He mentally shook his head and continued to smooth talk the gentleman and was able to secure Emily's group of Bellas a sponsor that had deep pockets and was more than willing to donate funds to the acapella group. He introduced his cousin and her girls to their new sponsor and left to meet the other girls at the bar Em had sent them to to meet with after.
"You're late Mitchell and you missed the performance. That is not acceptable." Was Aubrey's terse greeting when she noticed his arrival.
"What are you talking about? I was there for the entire thing. Thanks Lily." Beckett raised the Old fashioned that the quiet Asian woman had slid across the bar to him. He took a drink before continuing. "I was schmoozing for my cousin. Why else do you think I'm dressed like this instead of my usual attire?"
"Damn Mitchell! Look at you being all Mr. GQ, looking all sexy and shit. Almost hot enough to make me go straight." CR teased with a wink as the rest of the girls admired the business casual outfit he was wearing.
Beckett was dressed in a black pair of Dolce & Gabbana high leather boots, a pair of black Armani pants that had very fine pinstripes, a silk dress shirt that was the same colour as his eyes, a Prada belt and black suit style leather jacket by Calvin Klein. All in all, the outfit Beckett was wearing would have been obscenely expensive if he had paid full pricing for the items. He had found the jacket and shirt in a thrift store. The boots had been a gift from a famous client, as Beckett had restored the man's '69 SS Chevelle to its original glory, as if it had rolled off the production line. The belt and pants had been bought through outlet stores. The number one thing he had learned on the professional side of business and being a part of the hustle, if you look like you had money, those with money were more than willing to throw their money at you for whatever your proposal is.
Beckett smirked at CR for a moment as he raised his glass in her direction as a toast before replying, playing up his southern drawl.
"That may be Miss Cynthia, but bless your heart sugah, I don't think your wife would approve and I'm not looking for a threesome. Besides I'm sure you would just ruin this southern boy for all others that come after ya."
Beca ended up spitting her mouth full of beer out as she cracked up laughing at the shocked look on CR's face. Beckett smirked before downing his drink and signalled for a beer. As Lily handed him the beer, Emily came rushing in with apologies for the misunderstanding. By the time he left the bar he had been talked into joining the Bellas on the USO tour.
Three weeks later he found himself standing on an air base in Rota Spain, rolling his eyes as Chloe attempted to flirt with one of their security escorts. He had travelled with the Bellas throughout Europe, constantly writing in his new song book. He had been with Beca when she was playing around with DJ Khalid's mini recording setup in his hotel room when he should have been making sure that the rest of the Bellas stayed out of trouble. He had made nice with Theo when the man had pulled him aside in France and had been asking questions about his sister. Once Theo seemed satisfied with his responses he thanked Beckett for his honesty. Beckett had then asked Theo if there was a piano in the hotel that he could use. Theo then had him follow him back to Khalid's room that had a beautiful piano in the main room. Theo advised Beckett that DJ Khalid wasn't due back for another half hour but someone from Khalid's security had to stay in the room with him. Beckett quickly nodded as he practically drooled over the piano. That had been 15 minutes ago.
Even as he had been thinking of the past, Beckett had been adjusting things on his music sheet. He ran through the melody one more time before he was satisfied with it. Beckett looked at the time before letting out a deep breath. He had just enough time to run through it and sing the lyrics.
He was startled by the enthusiastic applause from behind him and he spun around to see the man himself standing there. Beckett quickly stood up, apologizing for taking too long. Khalid waived away his apology and asked him if he had composed the song himself.
"Yes but it's missing something when I sing it. It's subtle but it will make all the difference in the world for this song." Beckett replied honestly as he absently made the notations of the changes he wanted on the music.
Khalid asked to see what changes Beckett had just made and smiled as he understood what the younger man had been getting at.
"Yes Yes this is perfect. Now when your sister gets here I want to hear the two of you sing this. I want to sign her and after hearing you just now and reading over your composition, I want to sign you as well."
"Wait what? Is this real?"
Khalid laughed and clapped the smaller man on the shoulders with both hands.
"Yes it is my young friend. You and your sister are blessed and I would love it if you would both bless me by signing with my label."
Beckett is still stunned and in a bit of shock. He never thought that his own composed music was any good. Sure he could produce beats for someone else as he had easily done that for his internship while he was at Barden, but as far as he was concerned this was different.
He gracelessly plopped himself down in a chair and was still in a bit of shock when Theo walked in with Beca. Khalid had been playing away for a few minutes when they walked in. Beca looked at her brother and raised an eyebrow seeing that he was in a bit of a stupor. Khalid enthusiastically greeted Beca. He asked if she would sing with her brother first before he got to the reason as to why he wanted to speak with her. Hearing his name snapped Beckett out of his stupor. He quickly conferred with her in a low voice explaining what it was that was needed. Beca nodded and asked if she could play the piano. Beckett nodded and after a moment he signalled that he was ready. Beckett had put in one of his wireless earbuds to act as a noise block as well he had set his phone to record the session. Once the Music started Beckett began to sing once again, Beca doing the subtle harmonies. Once the song had finished Beckett stopped recording and thanked his sister.
Khalid had agreed that the subtle harmonies had made all the difference, it was almost like a haunting echo. Beckett nodded and sat back as Khalid turned his attention to Beca.
He was a bit stunned that she immediately turned down his offer stating that the Bellas were her family and she couldn't do it without them. The three of them had managed to convince her to take the night and think it over. Beckett went back to his room, while Beca went to look for the girls, specifically Chloe to talk over what had just happened.
Beckett had just uploaded the song to his YouTube channel and was letting it play. He had used his software to get rid of the background sounds and clean up the subtle distortions. Amy and Beca came barrelling through the connecting door from his sister's room into his.
"What the hell?"
"It's the Bellas. Amy's dad has kidnapped them."
Beckett sprung up out of his chair and began to change his shirt. He grabbed his bag and grabbed the hidden knife and strapped it to the side of his lower leg. He pulled on a pair of combat boots and changed his shirt to a black long sleeved one.
"Where the fuck were Chicago and Zeke? Why weren't they watching them?" Beckett demanded as they left the room.
"Yeah that's kind of my fault." Amy then went on to explain the confrontation she had had with her father and how the two soldiers escorted her away from him and back to the hotel. It was while they had been helping Amy that Fergus had set his back-up plan into motion.
The three of them quickly devised a rescue plan as they rowed out to the Fat Dingo Bitch. Beca would get up on to the top deck where the Bellas would be and create a distraction. Amy would take out as many of her father's lackeys that would be guarding the yacht before rigging a homemade bomb. Beckett's job was to seize the yacht's engines before carefully making his way up to the top deck to help his sister get the Bellas off the boat.
Once on the yacht, Beckett placed a quick call directly to Aubrey's father informing him of what had happened and their coordinates before he promptly hung up on the man as he began barking orders at Beckett to stand down. Disabling the engines was child's play for the mechanic and in less than two minutes the yacht was dead in the water. He slowly crept his way through the boat, knocking out the guards that Amy hadn't gotten to yet. He had just reached the upper deck when Amy fell through the glass, spraying a fire extinguisher at her father and his bodyguards. Beckett ran to the midships of the boat, helping his sister get the Bellas off the yacht. He had to push a couple of the girls off the rail as Beca ran back to get Amy when one of the men from the lower deck fired a gun at Beckett. Beckett grunted in pain and ducked around a corner as Amy's bomb went off. He felt the deck rumble under his feet and he sprinted for the bow of the boat, diving overboard as the deck exploded upwards in a shower of wood and fibreglass. He felt a burning in his arm seconds before he hit the water. When he finally surfaced gasping for air he had cleared the area where the Bellas had grouped together around the row boat by about 30 feet and was picked up by the US Navy. When one of the officers helped haul him out of the water Beckett was frantic.
"You need to get them out of the water, I'm bleeding and I know that the sound of the wood groaning will attract the white tip sharks that are in these waters."
The two small crafts sped up towards the group of women in the water as Beckett applied a makeshift tourniquet to his leg using his belt while one of the medics applied pressure to the wound on his thigh. Once all the Bellas were out of the water, the zodiac that Beckett was in immediately turned around and raced back to the harbour where there were a couple of ambulances waiting, the second one following right behind. Beckett was the last off the zodiac as the paramedics wanted to stabilize him first before moving him. He watched as Chloe ran into Chicago's arms kissing him soundly, and scoffed.
"Est-ce que tu vas bien?" The paramedic had asked in concern as they had finally loaded him on a stretcher and had jostled him some.
"Oui, sortez-moi d'ici s'il vous plaît." Beckett tiredly replied.
The paramedic gave him a small smile before nodding. They quickly loaded him into the ambulance, Beca jumping in the back last minute wrapped in a blanket. He smiled at her as she gave him a small sad one in return. His pants began to ring and he laughed at the look of surprise on both the paramedic's and Beca's face. He fished in his pants for his phone that was in a waterproof case inside a ziplock baggie.
"Shit." Beckett muttered as he saw that it was Aubrey's father calling.
Beca took the phone from her brother and answered. It was a very short one sided conversation and Beca rolled her eyes before finally advising the General that her brother was currently being transported to the hospital and promptly hung up on the man who was mid rant again. Beckett began laughing.
"What?" Beca asked him in a tone of voice that clearly indicated she thought that he was losing it.
"It must be a family thing, I had called him once we were on the damn boat and gave him the coordinates before promptly hanging up on him when he demanded that I stand down."
Beca began laughing after a moment. Beckett yawned as the adrenaline was fading from his body and he was starting to feel the aches and pains and the blood loss was catching up with him.
"Hey is Em ok? Did she get off the boat ok?" Beckett asked as he fought to stay awake but he was losing the battle as the pain was winning out.
"Yeah. I made sure she was one of the first ones off the boat." Beca answered
Beckett nodded, a small smile gracing his face before the pain became too much and he passed out with a small grunt as his eyes rolled back.
When he came to, he could hear tense whispering and had a bitch of a headache. He pressed the button to summon a nurse, which immediately brought the doctors to his room. It was explained that he had sustained severe 2nd bordering on 3rd degree burns to his left bicep. It was just dumb luck that the water and night air were at the right temperature to keep the burn cool. The material of his shirt acting as a cool compress. They had removed a .22 calibre bullet from his thigh. Apparently Beckett had been hit by a ricochet and that slowed the projectile down enough to prevent it from exiting out the back of Beckett's thigh. It did however nick a few large blood vessels and that was what had caused the excessive bleeding. Beckett was just thankful that he wouldn't have a big ass exit wound scar. The doctor immediately gave him some ibuprofen for his headache. The headache was a combination of coming out of the mild anaesthesia they had given him and the come down from the adrenaline rush. He would be required to wear a sling for a week to reduce the amount of movement to prevent unnecessary aggravation to the burn. The doctor had also given Beckett a prescription to get filled at the pharmacy for painkillers and handed him his discharge papers knowing that was the next question to come from Beckett.
Beca came running in as soon as the doctor left and hugged him tight.
"Don't ever do that again! You scared me you asshole!" Beca muttered into his chest.
Beckett laughed softly as he hugged her back as best he could with the one arm. He kissed the top of her head in apology for scaring her. The two siblings stayed that way for a few minutes. Beca letting the sound of her brother's strong steady heartbeat soothe her nerves.
"What was with all the whispering? Beckett asked once Beca had sat up.
"Oh um, that was Chloe and I. She wanted to come in and see you and I denied her access. Told her that you didn't want to see her. Aubrey had to pull her away."
"Why the hell is she here? Shouldn't she be in Captain America's arms fawning over how he's such a hero?" Beckett scoffed.
"Well that is a bit harsh." Came Aubrey's voice from the doorway.
"And yet completely true. I watched her from my position from inside the zodiac. She didn't wait to make sure everyone else was safe on shore and Ok. As soon as she saw him she ran to him, thanking him before she tried to swallow his tongue." Beckett replied bitterly.
Aubrey stared at him for a minute. "Why do you care? It's not like you guys were exclusive?"
"That was her choice Aubrey, I offered full commitment and she said no and that she wasn't sure if it would be a good idea because of the distance. Not only that but the night of the botched reunion she came back to my hotel room, tells me how much she loves me and doesn't know if she can live without me, tells me that she is seriously considering giving the long distance thing a chance and lo and behold look at what happens when we get to Spain. I feel like a back up plan. I may not have much, but I do have my dignity and I refuse to be someone's second choice, their fucking back-up plan." Beckett replied in a low voice that advised Aubrey to tread carefully in what she said next.
Instead Aubrey was shocked by the information that Beckett had revealed. It seemed that her best friend had withheld some vital information as she ranted to Aubrey about how Beckett had no right to be jealous and mad at her for showing interest in Chicago.
"I originally came in to give you an ass chewing but now I understand why you don't want to see her right now." Aubrey paused for a moment and then smiled. "Oh and I wanted to tell you congratulations."
Beckett looked at the blonde confused.
"For getting to sign with DJ Khalid. Amy told us, well actually she outed the fact that Khalid wanted to sign only Beca and not the rest of the Bellas and Beca quickly threw you under the bus to take the attention off her. You know how she is."
Beckett laughed as Beca scowled at the blonde for her teasing.
"I also wanted to let you know that Khalid's people are here and will escort you back to the hospital once you are ready to go. He also called in a lawyer to represent you as the police want to interview you regarding what happened on the yacht."
Beckett sighed in irritation before perking up.
"How mad do you think they would be if I answered their questions in Creole...ooh better yet in Cajun?" He asked innocently.
Aubrey shook her head as Beca tried to contain her giggles. Aubrey pulled a pad of paper and a pen out of the bag she was carrying and handed both items to Beckett.
"I had a feeling that your trouble making self would need these."
Beckett smiled at her as he placed them on the small table. He drank the coffee that Beca had brought him when she first entered, and he began to write a detailed account in both French and English, of the events that had happened from when he had left the hotel up until he passed out in the ambulance. It had taken him 30 minutes to write it all out and during that time Aubrey had gotten his prescription filled, and Beca had come back with breakfast for him. Beca had also told him that there was a bag of clothes for him in the bathroom. She had picked out his most relaxed fit clothes that weren't his sleep clothes.
"Oh and Khalid has postponed the announcement and performance for a day. He wanted to give you a day of rest considering your injuries." Beca added almost as an afterthought as he shuffled to the bathroom.
Once in the bathroom Beckett relieved himself, letting out a low groan of relief as his bladder emptied. Looking in the bag he smiled at seeing the baggy pair of jeans, the black wife beater and a loose button up. Beca had included fresh boxers, socks, his loafers and his toiletries so he could at least brush his teeth and tame his bedhead. It took him 15 minutes to get dressed and brush his teeth. Once he left the room he scowled at the wheel chair that was in the room but he understood that it was a necessity as they had technically taken him into surgery to remove the bullet and fix the damage to the inside of his leg.
"Khalid's people are here and they know how to sneak you out of the hospital. The press have been camped out since the story broke." Aubrey advised him.
"Alright let's do this."
Aubrey nodded and waved two men through the door. They quickly introduced themselves to Beckett and escorted him out of the room with Aubrey and Beca following behind.
It had been a long 24 hours for Beckett. He had managed to avoid Chloe and the other Bellas thanks to the additional security DJ Khalid had provided. Beckett had met with the lawyer almost as soon as he got back to the hotel and handed over his written statement before he had to meet with the police. Thankfully it had been a short interview after the police had read his written statement. He had been cornered by Aubrey's father as he was coming out of the police station. Beckett had yawned as the man berated him for being so reckless and stupid. After five minutes of ranting Beckett finally interrupted the man's rant.
"Look General, I get that you were scared because your daughter was on that boat, but you weren't the only one who had family on that boat. Had you been in my shoes would you have reacted any differently to save them?"
Beckett chuckled to himself at the memory of the man standing there speechless as Beckett's words registered.
"What's so funny?" Beca whispered as they waited in the wings for DJ Khalid to introduce him.
"Just remembering how I shut the General up yesterday and the look on his face." Beckett quickly whispered back.
"And now, I would like to introduce to you this surprise gem that I had overheard while we were here. He sent chills up and down my spine and I just had to sign him. So before I announce the winner of the contest, please welcome Beckett Mitchell."
Beckett placed a kiss at his sister's temple as he slowly made his way onto the stage. The house lights had dimmed so it allowed Beca to quickly sneak over to the piano. A soft spotlight hit him and the Bellas gave him cheers and wolf whistles. He had decided to wear a pair of Calvin Klein Jeans, a black wife beater and Silver vest. On his feet were his Dolce and Gabbana boots. His arm was still in the sling but it just enhanced the bad boy image. Once the cheers had died down, Beckett took a deep breath and turned to nod at his sister to start the song.
Somebody said you got a new friend
Does he love you better than I can?
And yeah, I know it's stupid
But I just gotta see it for myself
I'm in the corner, watching you kiss him, oh oh oh
I'm right over here, why can't you see me, oh oh oh
And I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the guy you're taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
I'm just wanna dance all night
And I'm all messed up, I'm so out of line, yeah
Stilettos and broken bottles
I'm spinning around in circles
And I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the guy you're taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
And oh no
So far away but still so near
The lights come up, the music dies
But you don't see me standing here
I just came to say goodbye
I'm in the corner, watching you kiss him, oh
And I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the guy you're taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
And oh no
Sit down in the corner, watching you kiss him, oh no
And I'm right over here, why can't you see me, oh no
And I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the guy you're taking home, ooh
I keep dancing on my own
So far away, but still so near
The lights come up, the music dies
But you don't see me standing here
He looked down to where Aubrey and Emily were sitting and gave a small smile as they both wiped away tears as they clapped and cheered for him knowing he had written that song about Chloe.
"Thank you." Beckett said politely before turning away.
DJ Khalid motioned for him to stay where he was on stage.
"That was magical and once again it gave me those shivers. Blessed so blessed. Give it up once again for Beckett Mitchell!"
DJ Khalid pulled his mic away so the crowd wouldn't hear him as he whispered into Beckett's ear that he wanted him to help introduce Beca.
"Now the moment you have been waiting for, the winner. I had to plead with her and if it hadn't been for this man right here, the world would have been deprived of an amazing voice, who knew that one family could produce so much talent. So blessed, so so blessed."
Beckett chuckled before he brought his mic back up.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for the person who provided the haunting harmony for me, my sister and America's soon to be number one female artist, Beca Mitchell!"
Beca came out onto the stage and hugged Beckett. Beckett limped as quickly as he could to the wings so his sister could have her moment.
He watched with pride as she looped her own voice in the beginning. It was bittersweet watching the Bellas be pulled up on stage and sing together one last time knowing that their chapter had come to an end as a new one for Beca was just beginning.
