"Alisa?" Brook asked, it was clear she was nervous as she didn't know who this student was. It was clear that this student looked pretty similar to her but she knew this was slowly becoming too much for her. She wanted to get up and run off but for someone like Naomi, she looked at her as it was a message to stay. Brook knew that she needed to hold and not run.
"Nice to meet you." Alisa told her as she shook her hand. The newer student wasn't so social as she was beginning to lean back. Kay soon returned as she had a tray piled high with food and drinks. Kay began serving them out as she looked at Brook, opening another can of coke as she was very excited.
"Well we are being served as everything is so far so good, she soon began serving the students out as she had got them a lot of their food they were going to eat. Kay was excited, Brook not so much. She was stuttering a bit with the size of the portions she was being given as it reminded her of her mother.
"I think this too much." Brook stuttered a bit. Kay looked at her as she took a bite from her hamburger that she piled high with extra beef, bacon, an egg and cheese. It was clear she can hold it in her mouth like a rodent storing seeds. She soon swallowed as she looked at her.
"Why? How much does your father feed you? And what?" Kay told her as she finished off the other half of the burger, she got 3 for herself.
"Mostly fruit and vegetables, he expects me to cook most of my meals myself and only use three ingredients minimum so I have some leftover. Breakfast is mostly oatmeal. And it's always just enough for me." Brook told her as Kay looked at her as if she was insane or something.
"Are you sure?" Kay asked, looking concerned for just how thin Brook was. Kay wasn't used to anyone refusing such a meal, especially someone that hailed from America.
"I can't have this; I'll go find something lighter. But thank you for trying to accommodate me." Brook admitted as she turned and walked off. Kay was surprised as the other student looked at her as she was leaving her dish unoccupied.
"She did mention about cooking most of the food herself, I think she really isn't into our food. Maybe she's just so used to cooking all of the food that she doesn't really want to take from us." Naomi told her as Kay was digging into some country fried chicken with thick gravy on top. Alisa was busy digging in as Kay was now talking with a mouth full.
"Well her loss, she'll starve since this is what we mostly serve." Kay told her as she had to either adapt or pretty much suffer from hunger. Naomi soon had another idea.
"Look I'll visit her later and give her things she might need like actual raw ingredients so I can judge her to see where she lands. Plus I probably want to fill out her program sheet to make sure she gets into a program because Saunders doesn't need a blank student working around their papers. I want to help make her life here exciting." Naomi told Kay her idea. Kay looked at her as she was wondering how to make her life a bit more exciting. She was getting distrustful with Naomi as she looked at her.
"If that's what you feel like you need to do. You are one of my assistance after all, it's your responsibility to make sure new students have a seamless transition into Saunders" Kay turned as was once again talking with a mouth full. Naomi looked at her.
"That's pretty rude to talk with a mouth full." Naomi remarked by her behavior. Kay swallowed as she was thinking that her vice commander was being rude to her back.
Kay quickly gulped her mouthful down. "Sorry." She apologized, but her face said everything but.
"It's fine." Naomi said as she got up as she walked off, she wanted to see where Brook had wandered off to.
It was later when she tracked her down to her dorm. She soon knocked and called out. "Brook? Are you ok in there?" When no reply was offered, Naomi fished around her pocket until her hand rested on a skeleton key, which was issued to certain members of Saunders in order to check up on students. "I'm coming in." She warned.
Naomi opened the door
"Where were you? We missed you down at the party, is something bothering you?" Naomi asked as she sat on the bed next to her. Brook looked at Naomi as she began to speak.
"Yes, the food that was presented, reminded me of home." Brook began.
"Are you homesick?" Naomi asked.
Brook shook her head, "No, I don't want to be home, that's the point. I feel like I haven't even left." Brook responded as she turned back down to her knees. Naomi looked at her as she had a piece to the puzzle as she figured out a bit of what was going on but it wasn't enough.
"So you feel like you're home but at the same time you're not. I honestly never heard a student tell me anything like this." Naomi responded as she looked at her as the girl generally didn't want to continue speaking. She looked back as she continued to speak. "I guess this place might be a bit off putting for you, but then again, this is only your first day here." She then smiled, "But that can come later. Right now, I'm sure you're hungry." Brook looked curiously at Naomi who quickly added, "I have access to the school's kitchen if you want to make something for yourself." She soon got her up as they went to the school's kitchen
The school kitchen was vast as it served two functions, teaching the students about cooking and hosting the cooking program as well as being the place to serve the meals for the students, the two freshmen arrived as Naomi walked her over to the fridge. She looked in as the place was packed with food. She soon looked at Brook.
"Well we're here, pick what you need, I'll be here if you need help." Naomi told her as she went to go grab the food as she wanted to see what this student was capable of. Brook filled a couple of pots up with water as she soon peeled the potatoes she collected. She puts them in the pot as she sets them to boil as she went to make the dough. Naomi watched her carefully wondering what she was making as the girl was cutting up the onions into slices as she was going to cook them. She soon began rolling out the dough as she was now shaping them into what she wanted with the mold. Naomi continued to supervise and after an hour of cooking, Brook looked up to Naomi as she prepared two dishes of food.
"Well that took a long while but it was worth it all right." Brook panted as she had spent the last hour preparing food as she soon sit down with Naomi.
"So Pierogi you made with vegetables and onions I believe. I need to wonder how they taste." Naomi studied her food. She soon splits one open as she began to sample it. "These are pretty decent. Not the best but I would say you actually did a pretty good job with them. And I didn't know you could make food like this, I think we should put you in the cooking program." Naomi told her as they were eating. Brook began to speak.
"Well thank you, and I hope when my dad comes, he can bring me my supply of Kvass as well as water so I can have something to drink." Brook told her as Naomi had a question about the first drink she was going to have. Because you know, Saunders has everything but water.
"What is Kvass?" Naomi asked her as she was wondering what that drink was. Brook soon swallowed as she didn't want to be rude for her friend.
"Well Kvass is a mixture of Apple cider and a very light beer. My father adds honey which not only makes it much more tasty but he thinks someone like me should drink that instead of the soda mother gets me because he doesn't want me to have a diabetic reaction later on in life." Brook explained to her what Kvass was. Naomi was surprised as she looked at her.
"So you drink light beer in your life, the last part is understandable; your father is looking out for your health. But it's alcohol so the drink might be counterintuitive since you might get drunk. When Yeast gets a hold of sugar, it turns sugar into Alcohol." Naomi told her that Kvass is actually a type of Alcoholic drink as she soon continued talking to her. "So what type of music do you like?"
"Whatever father listens to, whatever Kay had blasted, made me want to cover my own ears. Father often has brass instruments and Piano music playing. I think I want to be part of the school's band if you have any interesting stuff I can play. My favorite composer that I've listened to is Ilya Shatrov." Brook told her as she had favorites. Naomi looked at her.
"I see, you seem to be of eastern European descent I might ask? Not that I know your exact country of descent but by the looks of it, you're probably having a hard time adjusting since you're so used to your father being there for you. And by the looks of things, he takes very good care of you." Naomi told her as she finished eating her food as Brook did pretty much the same thing.
"I'm sure he does, but I feel nervous without him being by my side to teach me, I mean I want to be prepared for life ahead and have no one slow me down. He just taught me so much." Naomi soon scooted herself to the other side as she began to speak.
"I can see why you're beginning to miss him. I mean he hasn't really spoiled you or treated you bad, he did everything he could to get you ready." Naomi soon cleaned up the dishes as she went to go wash them. She soon returned a few minutes later as she had a pen. She soon sat down next to her as she gave it to her. "Fill out the program you wish to be a part of. I'll submit it and I'll tuck you in for the night." Naomi told her as Brook filled out the information. She soon chose the band club seeing how it would be the most creative and a way to get her voice out. Naomi soon took the paper as she went to the office to hand the slip in. "I'll meet you at your dorm so I can hopefully be able to put you to bed for the night." Naomi soon walked off as Brook did much the same thing.
Brook was the first to arrive at her dorm as Naomi opened it up. She soon let Brook inside as she sat outside as she waited for the student to shower and clean herself up. About 15 minutes later, she walked out in her Saunders sleep attire as she soon laid in her bed.
"I know this first day must have been tough for you but thanks for the meal. I'm sure you put yourself to sleep." Naomi giggled a bit as she soon tucked Brook in.
"Naomi, I'm worried about what tomorrow might bring." Brook admitted as her head rested on the pillow. Naomi looked at her as she didn't want the student to fret over it.
"I'm sure the club would be very accepting of you. You seem to be one of the more kind hearted student's I've met that have come from America."
"And just as cold." Brook wept as there might be something else to this, even though she was kind hearted, her personality might be that of a cold person. Naomi looked at her as she began singing a lullaby for the new girl.
"We're tenting tonight on the old campground, give us a song to cheer. Our weary hearts, a song of home. And friends we love so dear. Many are the hearts that are weary tonight, wishing for the war to cease; many are the hearts looking for the right to see the dawn of peace. Tenting tonight, tenting tonight, tenting on the old camp ground." Naomi's lullaby had put Brook fast asleep as she knew that Naomi would be the mother figure that she had long been looking for. Naomi soon made sure she was fast asleep before turning the lights out and leaving the room. She soon locked the door with the key card as she walked back to her dorm as she had a long day ahead of her.
[A/N]: How are you liking this so far as Naomi can be the girl's first friend and possibly the person who understands her more than Kay, this would possibly have some consequences in the future but look at Brook, she's happy for now. See you in the next chapter.
Also big thank you to the user The Shadow Author on Discord who is kind of changed the lullaby around as we're becoming a tag team with this.
