Chapter 2

Quinn POV

''Oh, that witch hasn't a clue to what she's doing.'' Jess says and I clear my throat.

''Hey... Quinn.'' Jess says.

''And what brings you to the arsehole of the world?'' he asks me.

''You're passing through it. What's that make you?'' I ask.

''Ha. Here. Why don't you go inside and have a wee look.'' He says.

I travel down the hole and see bodies of strange creatures and in the middle are bones of a teen maybe adult with a stab wound to the heart I would wager.

''Whoa. Wicked.'' I say as I touch one of the creatures' body. Then fire starts to appear out of nowhere and I look up to see a dragon! I run to my mother as fast as I can, panting.

''I know it's still.'' mum's saying

''Well I covered it.'' a workman says.

''What? Quinn!'' my mum says.

''Mum there's something in there! There's something in the hole!'' I say.

''Darn it Jess.'' mum says.

''It's unsafe conditions!'' Jess says.

''Here. Let's look at this void.'' a workman says.

''It's unsafe!'' I hear Jess yell.

''I'm just going to wash your eyes out okay?'' Mum tells me.

''Mum we've got to go!'' I say.

''No no. We've got to do this fast. Open your eyes. Open them up. Open them.'' Mum says.

In the cave,

''Oh.'' a workman says.

''Give me that.'' another workman says while the other goes to light a cigarette, but the flame goes out. He turns around after hearing the dragon breathing and his eyes widen before the dragon breathes fire and incinerates them.

Back with the Abecrombys,

''Go! Get in.'' Mum says.

''Mum, there was something in there!'' I say.

''...Come here!'' mum says as she had seen something that terrified her and pulled me into a hug.

''Come on! Come on!'' mum says.

''Mum!'' I cry in fright at seeing the dragon.

I hear mum scream as the dragon makes its way outside and doesn't care about us.

''Mum? Mum? Mum?'' I ask as she won't wake, I start crying as I lost my mum.

20 years later

I've kept this for years because someday, it will be up to you. I don't want you to be afraid I want you to understand. Knowledge is the only weapon we've got left. In the beginning it was ignorance that destroyed us I saw the first but soon the world saw millions. No one knew how they spawned so fast.

They swarmed like locusts burning everything in their path driven by one purpose... to feed. Even then we couldn't believe they were real. Ancient man had made them into myths but nature had made something far more terrible.

Too late our scientists discovered their true identity a species which had burned the dinosaurs to dust, whose ash had brought on ice ages, who in eons past had scorched the world clean of life waiting for the Earth to replenish itself to start their cycle anew ...2... 1.

Our weapons shot fire back at them yet for every one of them killed, a hundred took its place. They seemed invulnerable. We could only look on as our leaders used their greatest arsenal to destroy them.

...But in the end, we only helped them till the world burned and the few of us that were left fled the cities found shelter where we could. You have to understand, our past because you will decide our future.

They're starving now and they're more dangerous than ever. But we have to go on. We have to outlast them. Only one species is getting out of this alive.

I'm working when suddenly; I hear Jerry and go towards him and his device.

''Hey Quinn. Come and have a look at this. It's a straight drop now from the water tower. You just pull the plug and then it hits the walls.'' Jerry says.

''Don't care about the specs Jerry. Can it take it?'' I ask.

''Yeah. Course it can. Remember, I used to build blast furnaces for a living. I know all about fire.'' Jerry says.

''Of course, you do. Sorry mate. Nice one.'' I say.

''Eddie's gone psycho.'' a worker says.

''... Jared?'' I ask.

''... Yeah Quinn?'' Jared asks.

''Keep 'em at it. No slacking.'' I say.

''You heard him. No slacking. Go!'' I hear Jared say.

''I shall always walk.'' I hear someone say. I think of what I learned from the diary of St. George. Of the woman he killed and how he took her children and gave them to a childless couple.

The drawing of her has been redrawn or painted even before the dragon reemerged into the world. She had curly black hair, aquamarine blue eyes, full lips, pale skin, a Grecian nose, and a dragon birthmark, her name, Saoirse Dragoon.

Saoirse Dragon POV

''Mum, be careful!'' I say as I know the dragon and then dragons must have had a reason for attacking but I don't want harm to come to mum. I have curly black hair, aqua blue eyes, pale skin, full lips, Grecian nose and a strange dragon birthmark. In short, I look like my ancestor.

A dragon comes and she looks ready to harm my mum. I may only be eight, but I won't let a dragon harm mum.

I run in front of mum and make sure fire won't be able to get to her.

''NO! Kill me not my mum. Please.'' I say as I close my eyes, awaiting my death by fire but no fire comes and instead, the dragon nuzzles me like a hatchling.

It only takes only one cow out of our ten cows and I know how lucky we are and with that, I faint.
