December 1st.
Judy Hopps padded through the ZPD foyer after filing some long overdue paperwork. Her paths crossed with a certain bespectacled feline as she neared reception - Nikolai Katzendale.
"Dr K! What brings you here?" she asked.
Nikolai explained, "My matter-of-fact writing style meant some points of my statement needed clarification."
"So I'll be seeing you in the wards, then?"
"Not for a wee while, the health board has suspended my license for the time being," explained Nikolai, "on the bright side it means I can finally write my paper."
"Yes! Your paper, tell me about it. I'm all ears this time," said Judy, brightly.
With a slight grin, Niko took a breath to speak. As he did so, he spotted Nick Wilde entering the foyer and approaching Judy.
"I'm actually feeling pretty run down, but just holler next time you see me and I'll tell you all about it!" declared the Doctor, giving a look to inform Judy of Nick's presence.
"Oh, okay," said Judy, "Well, it's nice seeing you, you know, here, and not in some dank plant room."
"Indeed," nodded Niko.
Judy turned and took a step. Before going further, the bunny hesitated. She slowly turned back to Niko, "Hey Doc,"
Niko hummed quizzically.
"Keep out of trouble. If not for me, then do it for your brother's sake."
"I will," he said, then after a pause, "try my best."
Judy gave him one last nod before padding the rest of the way to Nick.
"Carrots, I was in the neighborhood, Benji said you were here, so I thought you might want a ride home," explained Nick.
"For once, your timing is impeccable, Slick."
"How is he?" asked Nick, nodding toward Niko.
"Doctor Katzendale? He's ok. Well, as far as I can tell," said Judy.
"Right. Well I just got away from Izzy's. Soon as I sat down, he took me on a tour 'round the house."
Judy laughed.
"I get dragged to his room and he's pulling out his favourite video games and telling me about his coin collection, which I might add, includes rare fascist era Prussanian currency," explained Nick, as though that last point meant something.
"That boy has one heck of a soft spot for you, doesn't he?"
"Yep."
Reaching the rear exit, Nick stepped ahead and held the door to the back lot, saying "After you, ma'am," and waving Judy through.
Judy wasted no time hopping over to Nick's car, deftly clambering over the passenger door of the red convertible. Nick shrugged and climbed over his side too, putting the vehicle in gear and cruising out of the parking lot. As they passed the back gate, Nick put his foot down just enough to pull a slight skid as he turned onto the road.
"Easy there Danny, remember we're role models," Judy teased.
"Chillax, Sandy. I got it all under control," Nick teased back.
The pair spent the next few moments silent, driving along, each with a stupid grin on their face.
"Okay, it's official, we don't do this enough," Nick declared.
Judy turned quizzically, "Hang out? We went to that concert . . ."
"January," said Nick, "last year."
Judy hummed, "I think you're right."
Nick and Judy avoided each other's eyes until they had reached The Grand Pangolin Arms.
"Here you are," he said.
Judy nodded and with obvious reluctance, pulled on the handle and pushed open the shiny red car door.
"Thanks," she said, adding, "For coming to rescue me."
"Uh-huh, You're . . . You're welcome," stated Nick, not quite sure where this was headed.
"See you later, Nick," said Judy, giving the fox a kiss on the cheek before stepping out.
"See you later."
Final Addendum
Well, That's it.
This 'chapter' while not necessary in terms of the main narrative, it is more or less the final return to equilibrium for everything.
