Rating: T
Notes: This is set to be a three-shot, though it may be extended. Joan and Laura are overseas visiting family so Aria gives them a call to let them know that Rosie has been found, alive! However, she leaves out one important detail, wanting that to be a surprise for when they arrive home.
* Joan & Laura are in Paris at the moment. There is a six-hour time different. In Rosewood, it is about 2 or so in the afternoon, making it just after six in Paris, France.
Enjoy! :)
Once Rosie asks if they can call Mimi Laura and Nana Joan, and Aria and Spencer happily agree, Spencer decides to check the time, to make sure it is not too late over where they are.
"Why you gotta check, Mama?" Rosie asks but it is Scottie who answers for their mother.
"'Cause Nana Jo and Mimi Laur are in Paris!"
"Yes, they are." Aria says, tickling his sides and smiling as he screeches with laughter. Then, she looks to Margaret, because it is very important the young woman knows this. "Your moms and siblings go to Paris to release balloons every year on this day. For you, Margie."
Margie looks to them with watery eyes. "R-Really?"
And Aria nods. Then, as she is calling Joan through FaceTime, her emotions get the better of her, and she chokes up, confusing Rosie.
"Mommy, why are you crying?" Her little girl gently wipes her tears.
"Mommy's just a little overwhelmed right now, sweetie."
Rosie looks anxious as she asks the next question. "Do you think they'll be happy to see me?"
"Rosie," Aria tucks a semi-wet strand of blonde curly hair behind the 8-year-old's ear. "They are going to be so, so happy to see you. You have no idea, baby." It takes a few moments, but then Joan is answering the call, and Aria's actually starts crying, even more, and she looks so upset when really, she has never been happier.
"Hello, sweetheart!" Joan looks to be wearing her pjs, lounging on the couch, with her glasses framing her faded blue eyes. "How are you and Spencer?"
"Joan," Aria stutters through tears. "Joan, is- is Laura there with you?"
"Yes, she is right over there. Aria, sweetheart, what is the matter? You look awfully upset."
Aria chokes on her tears here, and she can tell that she is worrying Joan. However, that still does not help her even out her voice as she answers with,
"They-They found her! The police found Rosalie!"
God how she tries to keep her face from saying she is devastated. Because she isn't. She is, in fact, so completely, immensely overjoyed.
Just as she knew it would, those words make Joan think the absolute worst.
Her heart breaks and Aria witnesses it, plain as day.
"Oh, honey," Joan breathes, hand covering her mouth. "Oh, baby, I am so sorry."
But Aria shakes her head. She feels new tears tracing down her cheeks as she laughs out,
"You don't understand," She adjusts the iPad she is using for FaceTime so that the person next to her is shown on the screen, as well.
"They found her!"
Rosalie starts crying as soon as she sees Joan. She buries herself into Aria's side, as Joan let's out a gasp.
"Oh, oh my god. Oh, my lord." She turns away. "Laura! Laura, get over here!"
Of course her wife comes running, alarmed at her tone of voice.
"What is it, honey?" She freaks out at the tears on her wife's face. "Joanie, what's going on? What's happened?"
"Come sit, love." Joan pats the seat next to herself. "There is someone who would really like to say hello."
Laura's brow furrows but she does as told. She thinks this is some elaborate good off, and that one of their grandkids is going to be on the iPad screen.
However, nothing prepares her for what, or who, she actually sees.
"They found her!" Joan chokes out, imitating Aria from earlier. "They found Rosalie and she's alive, Laurie! She's alive."
Laura is speechless, and can do nothing but stare at the screen.
"Hi, Mimi Laura!" Rosalie chirps, sniffling and wiping her tears in the way 8-year-olds do. "I missed you and Nana Joan!"
"Baby, we have missed you so, so much. We are so glad you are all right, we never gave up, sweetheart, never, ever. I am so glad you are okay." Laura's emotions get the better of her, and suddenly, they have a concerned daughter coming into the room. She wonders why both her mothers are crying right now.
Aria and Spencer can hear the conversation off-screen.
"Mom? Madre? What is going on?" 33 year old Kimmie comes over, and Laura pulls her down onto the arm of the couch.
"Sweetheart, do you remember when we said Spencer and Aria's daughter, Rosalie, went missing three years ago today?"
The reason they are overseas is because of this day right here – Margaret's birthday, and also the anniversary of her disappearance. Margie always said she wanted to live in Paris someday, so for the last 23 years, Joan, Laura, and their family have gone to Paris, where Kimmie also lives with her family, and they release balloons in the park.
They did this today, and now it is around six-thirty in the afternoon in Paris.
"Yes, I remember." Aria can hear Kimmie answer. And to that, Laura gestures to the iPad screen.
"They found her, baby." She gently tells her daughter, who immediately snaps her gaze to the iPad. "They found her, and she alive and safe."
Now, some people may think Kimmie would be upset about this. Or jealous, even. Because, why should she be happy that Aria and Spencer got their daughter back, after she was taken on her birthday, on June twenty-seventh, which is also Kimmie's sister's birthday and disappearance anniversary.
But that is not what Kimmie feels or thinks at all. Even though she doesn't have the magic kid who is Rosalie's age – 8 years old – she is still absolutely thrilled. In those two and a half years that Laura and Joan knew Rosalie, Kimmie and her siblings also got to know the beautiful, energetic little girl.
"Hi, Kimmie!" Rosalie happily greets, waving at the person she considered her big sister.
"Hello, babygirl," It is a nickname only for Kimmie to Rosie. "Hello."
There really is not much more to say. Kimmie calls in her siblings, and they all cheer, cry, and happily greet this little girl whom they came to love as their own. Then, Rosalie says the words she has been bursting to say for the past hour.
"Nana Joan, Mimi Laura, will you pleeease come home?! I really, really want to see you and hug you, and there is someone else who would like to see you and hug you. I think you will really love to see her, also."
They need no other convincing. Laura and Joan are agreeing immediately. They say they will book the first flight for tomorrow morning, and will be there by the afternoon. Curious as to who this Mystery Girl is, Kimmie also offers to come with them.
And so it goes.
Laura books a flight, Joan packs their clothes, and no one in the household can get any sleep, too excited for the day that awaits them.
*The next day, around 4 p.m.*
Rosalie and Margie have both stayed the night in the hospital. They had a fitful night's sleep, plagued by nightmares, and Rosalie being scared of the dark. They have battled three panic attacks, an anxiety attack, Rosalie having two potty accidents, Margie very, very embarrassingly having one of her own, and it is not even four o'clock yet.
But now?
Well now Aria gets word that Joan, Laura, and Kimmie's flight has landed. They are coming straight to the hospital, and the anxiety gets the best of Margie.
"Breathe, sweetheart." Spencer soothes the younger woman. "It is going to be ok. I promise you with everything that I am, your mothers will absolutely be over the moon to see. They have talked about you so much, they never gave up hope, never, Margaret, you hear me? They have waited 23 excruciatingly long years for this very moment."
Margaret nods along to her words, breathing deep, and remembering that these are her parents, and god how she has longed for this visit, this reunion, every single second of every single day she was in that hellhole.
That moment comes at exactly 4:13 p.m.
Margaret is in the bathroom, Spencer is braiding her hair, just trying to calm her nerves. They hear it the second their visitors enter the room.
"Mimi Laura, Nana Joan!"
Rosalie's voice brings smiles to both of their faces.
"Oh, honey." It is Joan's voice they hear next, Margaret looks to her, frantic and wide-eyed. Jesus, she had forgotten what her mommy's voice sounded like.
"I am so glad to see you!"
Laura is next, obviously, and Spencer decides now is the best time to reveal themselves.
"Where is Spencer?" Joan asks, and Aria kind of stutters on the answer.
"Oh, um, well… She is in the bathroom with– well, with the other… young lady… who was also found where Rosie was."
"Oh, goodness." Joan sounds shocked. "They found another girl? Oh, her parents are going to be so happy!"
Of course Joan would be thrilled for these strangers. Except, there is one problem with her sentence.
"Actually, we were hoping you would be the parents who reacted."
Spencer can tell Joan is confused, however, before the older woman can ask, there is but one thing that makes it passed Margaret's lips…
"Mama?"
It's two in the morning and I am sitting on the couch writing this. I probably should have gone to bed, but, oh well. The next chapter will be the official Taylor Family Reunion! Joan and Laura see their daughter for the first time in 23 years, Kimmie sees her sister, and their brothers, Joel and Jordan, fly in, as well!
Just to be clear - that last last word was Margaret speaking. She was talking to Laura.
