"You are so damn stubborn," Rosie told Tanya.
"What?"
"Tanya, you are very weak and are supposed to be using a cane."
"I use it in the room."
"How the hell does that help you?"
"Rosie, my children don't know and my husband just found out. How am I supposed to explain to Sky why I'm using a cane?"
"Tell him you broke a toe or something." Just then there was a knock at the door, "oh, hello Harry," Rosie stepped aside to let the man in. "I'm going to give you two some privacy," Rosie turned back to Tanya, "use your cane!" With that Rosie left.
"What was that about?" Harry asked.
"Rosie is irritated because I'm supposed to be using the cane and I haven't been. I told her I wouldn't be able to explain why I am using it to Sky."
"Tell him you broke a toe," Harry suggested.
Tanya laughed, "that's what Rosie suggested."
"Well, I came here to see if you would like to join me for lunch."
Tanya smiled, "I'd love to. I may need some help getting ready."
"I'm at your service Mrs. Bright." Tanya tried to stand with her cane but was having difficulty. "Here," Harry took one of Tanya's hands and helped to pull her to her feet. He proceeded to help Tanya get ready. "Darling, you are taking your cane with you."
"What if Sky sees me?"
"Lie, but you are taking it. I can tell you need it right now."
"Can't I hold onto you instead? Please," Tanya begged.
Harry thought for a moment, "oh, alright." He put the cane back in the suitcase and Tanya hooked her arm with his.
Harry took Tanya to the hotel to have lunch. They sat outside while they ate, "I'm glad you decided to join me," Harry smiled at his wife.
"Me too, and thank you for helping me. I should probably go back to my room after this so I can rest up for tonight."
After they finished lunch, Harry helped Tanya up and back to her room, "would you like some company?"
"Sure," Tanya smiled as Harry helped her to sit on the couch. He went to her luggage and retrieved her cane. Then he locked the door in case Sky walked in, before joining her on the couch. "I don't know how I'm going to pull this off tonight."
"You're really going to perform?"
"It means so much to Sophie. Plus it means a lot to Donna and Rosie...and me. I know it's probably stupid, but I really want to do this."
"I know it's women only, but if you need me just let me know or have someone find me."
"Thank you," Tanya kissed Harry, "I think I'm going to take a nap before the party. Could you give me a hand, please?"
"Of course," Harry stood and took one of Tanya's hands to help pull her up. Tanya pushed up with her cane and Harry held on in case she got dizzy or lost her footing.
"Thank you, I should be able to make it to the bed," Tanya slowly walked to her bed. Harry pulled the covers back and helped her to sit.
"How would you feel if I stayed here while Rosie was out?"
"That would be alright. In fact, I wanted to ask you to, but I felt I had already asked too much of you."
"Don't ever feel that way again. You need some extra help right now and that's alright. I told you, I'm not going anywhere."
Harry stayed with Tanya until Rosie and Donna returned to the room. "Tanya, wake up honey," Donna went to wake up her friend to get ready for the party. Tanya woke up and Donna felt terrible because she knew her friend was exhausted. Donna and Rosie helped Tanya get ready and find the clothes that she was going to change into after the performance. By the time Donna and Rosie were ready, Tanya was more awake. Rosie and Donna stayed close to Tanya as they walked to the stage.
"You okay?" Rosie asked her friend after the performance.
"A little tired, but I feel pretty good," Tanya answered.
"Let's get out of these clothes and go party," Donna said. It took both women to get Tanya out of her outfit, but Tanya was able to put her dress on alone.
"You're really wearing heels?" Rosie asked.
"Yes, do you have a problem with that?" Tanya responded.
"Well no, but you might after a while. I mean you can barely walk in flats," Rosie said.
"I honestly feel more alive than I have in months. Stop worrying I'll be fine."
"Alright, alright, but remember to rest if you start feeling the slightest bit tired."
"Don't overdo it," Donna added.
"Don't move too quickly," Rosie said.
"And no alcohol!" both women said at once.
"Can I laugh or smile?" Tanya asked sarcastically.
"Only if it's not too strenuous," Rosie answered back.
Tanya couldn't believe she actually pulled off that performance. It made her feel more alive than she had in months. Tanya was having a great time at the party. Sophie was overwhelmed and ended up collapsing. Tanya was on her way back to her room. She had snuck away while everyone was helping Sophie. Tanya was exhausted, "mum." Tanya turned at the sound of her son's voice, but she was so weak and tired that she fell to the ground. Sky ran to his mother, "are you okay?"
"No," Tanya whispered. She was not only physically tired, but tired of hiding everything. "I don't think I can walk back to my room."
Harry saw his wife on the ground, "Tanya, darling what happened?"
"I turned when I heard Sky and fell. I lost my balance," Tanya was having trouble getting up. Sky and Harry helped Tanya stand and Harry lifted his wife before taking her back to her room. Sky followed, "Sky," Tanya whispered after Harry sat her on the bed, "I have to tell you something. I lied before about why I was so weak and tired. I have Leukemia and I'm dying."
"What?!" Sky hadn't thought that this was what his mother was hiding.
"Son," Harry helped Tanya explain, "your mother's doctors found the cancer in time, but she decided to only have enough treatments to get her here to your wedding. She's throwing in the towel because she feels that she has nothing to live for."
Sky turned and left, unable to comprehend everything he was just told and saw. Tanya began to cry and Harry took her into his arms.
