There was a vacant bungalow next to Sam and Donna's. Harry had some furniture moved in and took Tanya to live there with him. "Darling, what time is your doctor's appointment tomorrow?"
"I wrote it down on the pad that's on your nightstand. I can't remember."
Harry had ordered a wheelchair for Tanya because she was now too weak and too tired to walk most of the time, even with help. Tanya had overdone it and needed more rest to regain some strength, "here, let me help you get into bed." Harry locked the wheels and helped his ill wife get into bed.
"How are we going to get me onto that ferry like this?"
"Bill is taking us on his boat. I know it's not really easier, but at least no one else will be there."
Tanya hadn't walked much since the night before what was supposed to be Sky and Sophie's wedding. She would be angrier if she weren't so damn tired all the time. Harry had really stepped up and was helping Tanya in every way possible. She was starting to have trouble with her arms and was close to needing Harry to help her eat and drink.
The next day, Bill helped Harry get Tanya and her chair on board. Harry picked up Tanya and Bill took the chair onto the boat. Bill then took Tanya from Harry and placed her in the chair while Harry got aboard. The doctor told Tanya that while her cancer was more advanced, he didn't see any reason why chemo wouldn't help put it in remission. He told her that eventually, she may need a bone marrow donor. Harry and Bill had a more difficult time getting Tanya on and off the boat this time. She was more exhausted and needed more help. The doctor had arranged for Tanya to be able to do her treatments at a small local hospital on the island.
Tanya was able to use her cane after a few treatments. She was still quite weak and tired, but she had been resting more. The wheelchair was still necessary, especially if Tanya wanted to go to the hotel or beach.
"Darling, would you like to go to the hotel for dinner tonight?"
"I don't know. I'm so tired," Tanya said from the couch.
"Well, then we'll eat here. What are you up for?" Tanya didn't have much of an appetite anymore.
"Nothing too heavy. You're pretty good at finding things for me to eat. Harry, can you give me a hand up please?" Harry walked over and reached a hand out to his wife. "Thank you," Tanya said once on her feet.
"Do you need me to hold onto you while you move?"
"Yeah, that's probably a good idea. I was just going to sit at the table while you cooked. I was getting lonely over here." Tanya wasn't able to walk very quickly anymore. Harry helped her to ease down onto a chair and went back to cooking. "You know, I'm not sure how much longer this cane is going to help me."
"Do you need a walker or to use the chair more?"
"No, I don't know," Harry knew that Tanya had been feeling overwhelmed a lot lately.
The next day, Harry decided to do whatever it took to cheer his wife up. "Darling, I'm taking you out today."
"Where?" Tanya asked as she moved to get out of bed.
"It's a surprise. Would you like some help getting ready?"
"Yeah, and getting up," it took longer than usual, but Tanya was finally ready to go. "Harry, where's my chair?"
"You don't need it today."
"Harry," Tanya began to get nervous.
"Darling, trust me," Harry went over for Tanya to link her arm in his. She nodded and the two made their way out of their home. It wasn't very far to a dock where Harry had a boat waiting for them.
The boat had one seat and on the other end there was a place for Tanya to lay back with a small umbrella for shade, "what's all this?" Tanya smiled.
"Here let me help you sit on the dock. It'll be easier for you to climb in that way." Harry took his wife's cane and sat it on the dock. He then helped her to sit with her legs hanging off of the dock. "You good?"
"Yeah, I think so."
Harry climbed into the boat and lifted his wife in, helping her to lay back. He grabbed her cane and started the motor, "ready?" Tanya smiled and nodded before Harry took off. He took them to a waterfall that Sam had told him about. One where he took Donna when they first met. Harry let the anchor down and grabbed lunch.
"Harry, it's beautiful," Tanya was in awe.
"Not as beautiful as you."
"I'm not that beautiful anymore."
"Yes, you are," Harry said before leaning in to kiss his wife.
"I can't believe you did this to this boat just for me."
"Well, I had Bill order me a larger boat but it hasn't arrived. I had to improvise and I knew you wouldn't be able to sit on anything without a back."
"You're so sweet. Now, I am actually starving."
"Can you eat in that position? I don't want you to choke?"
"Yeah, I'm upright enough."
After lunch, Harry took the boat back to the dock. "Do you want me to help you out first or get out and then lift you up?"
"Whichever is easiest for you." Harry pulled Tanya up and lifted her to sit on the dock. He sat her cane next to her and climbed out before helping her up.
"Thank you for today. It really perked me up," Tanya said as they made their way back to their bungalow.
"Well, the day is not over darling. You have a dinner surprise as well."
That night, Harry had made plans for a romantic dinner. He had called Donna and arranged for the beach to be empty. Harry had asked Sam and Donna to go to his and Tanya's to retrieve some things for tonight. They had offered to set up so that Harry didn't have to leave Tanya. Harry also had them pick up the food he had made to keep hot and bring down to the beach.
"Harry, I'm feeling alright. Why don't we leave the chair?"
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I am."
Harry walked his wife down to the beach. It was more difficult for Tanya to see where she was walking at night, but Harry had a small light. He couldn't bring a large flashlight because he needed to hold onto Tanya with both hands. Tanya needed to hold onto Harry with one hand and her cane with the other. "Careful darling," Harry held onto Tanya tightly.
Once the beach came into view, Tanya saw her surprise. "Oh my God, Harry did you do all this?"
"Well I got everything and made the food, but Sam and Donna set it up for us." Harry helped his wife sit on the blanket and the two enjoyed a romantic dinner. Once the couple was done they danced on the beach, then they walked on the beach, and waded in the water a bit. Sam and Donna said that they would clean up as well, so Harry and Tanya left everything and decided to head back. While they were still on the beach, the couple heard thunder. They were a bit farther from home than at lunch, "do you want me to see if we can take Donna's jeep back home?"
"I don't want her to have to walk home in the rain."
"Darling, she's not the one who has difficulty walking."
"We're still a ways from the hotel. Let's get going and see when we get there." The couple began to move towards home. When they reached the hotel, they realized that the only way up without stairs was blocked by a fallen tree. "As much as I hate the thought, we're going to have to take the stairs."
"Unfortunately I think you're right. I don't think that way is quite safe. It's probably slick from the rain too." Harry and Tanya began making their way up the stairs. Tanya moved a bit more slowly because she was having trouble seeing in the rain. "Maybe we should go inside the old goat house for some shelter."
"I really just want to get home," Tanya said. Harry reluctantly helped his wife walk past the old goat house and towards home. He could tell that Tanya was running out of energy from all of the walking she had done. Tanya had slipped or stumbled a few times on their way back, but Harry always caught her. They had finally made it home, and Harry helped Tanya to the bedroom to change out of her wet clothes and into some warm pajamas before helping her get into bed. "Harry, I had a wonderful time today. Thank you for this," Tanya smiled up at her husband.
Harry bent down to kiss her, "you're welcome darling, anytime." He climbed into bed after changing and took his wife into his arms. Harry didn't let Tanya know, but he was truly afraid of losing her.
"Harry," Tanya nudged her husband, "Harry!"
"What?" Harry startled awake, "what's wrong?"
"I need to use the bathroom, and I don't think I can on my own." Harry knew Tanya had to be weak and exhausted if she was waking him up for help. She always tried on her own and would even wheel herself in her wheelchair before waking Harry up.
"Can you walk?" Harry said as he went to Tanya's side.
"I don't know, but I can't sit up." Harry decided to get her wheelchair. He helped Tanya sit up and lifted her into the chair. After helping her in the bathroom Harry then lifted his wife from her chair and placed her back into bed. "Thank you, and I'm sorry for waking you."
"Don't be sorry. You can't help it and I told you that I would do anything for you." The couple fell back asleep in each other's arms.
