A/N: Once again, thank you so much for all of your amazing feedback. I can only repeat what I've been saying all along, I love reading your reviews – however long or short they are. Originally, I had a very different plan for this chapter. But since I didn't want to deprive you of some small glimpses into the family life of Maya, Josh and Lynnie and of some Hunter-Matthews family time, I threw the old plan overboard and this chapter was born. I'm excited to see how you like it. I am publishing this chapter with mixed emotions; it is the penultimate chapter after all. Only one more chapter and then that's it. I will tell you so much about the last chapter: it is going to include a big time jump and appearances by some surprise guests. I do already have plans for another "Girl Meets World" story – two to be exact: one would be based on One Direction's "They Don't Know About Us", the other one on Taylor Swift's "Mine". I haven't decided which to approach first. Please let me know if you'd be interested in a new story in general or even in which of those you'd be interested specifically. As always, feel free to leave a review and let me know what you think :)
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the Girl Meets World characters.

"Piece by piece"
6 months after Caitlyn Hartley Matthews' birth
Maya Hunter was exhausted. The first half of her day had been spent teaching her unusually bubbly and active students; well, mainly she had been trying to keep them from covering both her and themselves in paint – with moderate success. The blonde loved being a teacher and, most days, she really felt like she was succeeding in her goal to step into Cory, Jonathan, and Mr. Feeny's footsteps. But today had just been one of those days. It was a Friday and the kids – as well as their teacher – had been in dire need of a weekend. This led to them being unconcentrated and very talkative, which ended up being very exhausting for the young teacher.
The second half of her day had been spent helping her parents. They had had another meeting with Diane – the director – to discuss how to proceed with the movie. Maya still couldn't quite believe it; a movie about their own life was currently being developed – it just seemed so surreal. Well, the actual movie was still quite a long way down the road; Katy, Shawn and Maya had been adamant about being very involved in the developing and eventual filming stage. Diane was alright with that; she loved their story and was convinced that it would make for a great movie, but she could also understand that the Hunters were hesitant about what exactly they wanted to share with the world. Anyway, this led to Maya spending her afternoon in a tiny room, discussing … well, her life with a bunch of strange people. It was weird, but still exciting for the blonde.
But all the talking and thinking had given Maya quite a headache and she was glad when it had been time to leave. After saying goodbye to her parents – and promising to come by their place soon – she started to make her way home.
Home. A small smile made its way across the young woman's face as that word came to mind. Home to her beautiful daughter and amazing boyfriend – the two loves of her life. Well, not only them. For the time being, home was still the apartment Maya shared with her boyfriend, daughter, best friend and best friend's boyfriend. However, this would probably change sooner rather than later. Ever since Riley and Farkle had gotten engaged four months ago, the blushing bride- and groom-to-be had started looking for a place of their own. Together, the four of them had decided that Maya and Josh should stay at their current apartment, since they already had someone with them to occupy the second bedroom. For now, Lynnie's crib was still in Maya and Josh's room, but soon she would be ready to move into her own room.
Yes folks, you heard right. Farkle Minkus had finally popped the question and Riley Matthews had said yes – be honest, who would have expected anything else? It had actually been a very sweet proposal – and yes, Maya and Josh had been involved in the planning process. Being the sweet and perfect future son-in-law that he was, Farkle had made sure to ask both Cory and Topanga for their blessing. And after making the poor boy sweat for a good 30 minutes, Cory had decided to put the poor guy out of his misery. While Riley would always be his little girl, Cory did realize that she was an adult now. And both he and Topanga couldn't think of a guy they would rather have as a son-in-law than Farkle Minkus. They knew that Riley loved him and that he made her happy. And that was all that mattered to them.
Farkle had decided to take Riley out for a fancy dinner on their 7th anniversary – we are talking black tie, including Farkle in a tux and Riley in an evening gown. After sharing a lovely meal at Riley's favorite restaurant, the young man had surprised his girlfriend with a ride in a hot-air-balloon – and yes, Farkle had remembered to bring warm coats. Anyway, after enjoying the New York skyline from up in the clouds for a while, Farkle had – somewhat creatively – gotten down on one knee and asked the brunette to marry him. Riley – having had somewhat of a hunch after witnessing her three best friends whispering and conspiring the past few weeks – had immediately burst into happy tears before accepting. The brunette had tackled her fiancé in a tight hug, almost knocking both of them out of the hot air balloon – yes, the young woman was still our lovable little clutz.
Anyway, the wedding preparations were now in full swing. It was going to be a very big event – curtesy of Stuart Minkus and Minkus International, of course. The older Minkus had offered to pay for most of the wedding. After a bit of hesitation from the father of the bride, Stuart had managed to convince Cory with some very sweet words: "Cory. I have a helicopter and you don't. You have a Topanga and I don't. I own Minkus International and money is not an issue for me. Topanga chose you and you make her happy. Let me at least make her happy for one day by giving her daughter and my son the perfect wedding." Cory had been stunned. Well, for a moment before tackling Stuart in a tight hug – there may or may not have been some tears involved there.
As Maya approached their apartment building, she was almost run over by the blushing bride- and groom-to-be. "Woah! Riles! Genius!" the blonde exclaimed. "Where's the fire." Maya's eyes widened. "Wait a second. What fire? Is there a fire? Oh my God, there's a fire? Where the hell are my daughter and boyfriend? Are they still in there?"
"Peaches!" Riley interrupted her best friend's rant.
"There's no fire," Farkle assured her. "Josh and Lynnie are upstairs and completely fine."
Maya sighed relieved. "I'm sorry, guys," the blonde said sheepishly. "It's been a long day."
"You don't say." Riley looked her best friend up and down. "Peaches, you have to take it easy. Now I'm not saying you don't look good – I love your outfit, very business-like. But you do look a bit disheveled and completely exhausted."
Farkle nodded in agreement. "It's been a hard couple of weeks, hasn't it?"
Maya sighed. "It has and I know," she admitted. "With me now starting work and Lynnie and the movie … I guess it's all a bit much right now." Maya paused for a moment. "But I'm fine."
Riley and Farkle gave their best friend a skeptical look. They both knew that Maya didn't have it easy at the moment. Neither did Josh. That was one of the reasons they were taking their time searching for a new apartment. As long as the future Mr. and Mrs. Minkus were still in the same house as the young parents, they could easily make Maya and Josh take a break and take Lynnie off of their hands for a while. Katy, Shawn, Cory and Topanga also made sure to stop by when they could to offer their help, but it wasn't enough. Because not only Maya and Josh's private life was stressful, their work life was not far behind. Maya had just begun working as a teacher and Josh had also just started out in his job. They managed and both of them agreed completely that their little princess was worth all the time and effort; but it was still hard.
"Well, as my lovely fiancé just pointed out, you do look particularly lovely and business-like today." Farkle gestured to Maya's fancy blouse and skirt. "How was the meeting with the director?"
"Thank you, Farkle. Long, but productive," Maya admitted. "I think we're finally getting to the end of our discussions. And I have to say, I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. So at least, those meetings will be ending soon." The blonde did realize that she wouldn't hold up under all this pressure for much longer, so she was really glad that soon there would be one thing less on her plate. That way she could focus on her teaching and on her family. The two things most dear to her heart.
"That's really good to hear," Riley said. "Remember, if you need anything. Just say the word."
Maya smiled at her best friend warmly. "I know, honey. And I appreciate it." She enveloped her best friends in a group hug. "Now where are you off to in such a hurry?"
A panicked expression crossed both their faces. "We're off to meet our mothers," Riley explained. "More wedding preparations."
Maya couldn't bite back her laugh. "Wedding planning with Topanga and Jennifer … I have to say, I don't envy you. That's a scary duo."
"And we're already late," Farkle pointed out. "I would love to stay and chat, but I don't want to piss our mothers off before we even arrived there."
"And you shouldn't," Maya agreed. "I'm fine, you two, I promise. Now get going, I'll see you guys later tonight."
"See you later," the two of them chorused and took off down the street, hand in hand.
Maya chuckled as she watched her two best friends. Even after years of dating and even more years of being best friends, Riley and Farkle were still such an adorable couple. The blonde loved seeing her best friends so deliriously happy with each other and couldn't wait to see them tie the knot. Yes, Maya was aware that this would have been the more traditional route for her as well. And there were days when both she and Josh asked themselves how they managed to get everything done with work and the baby. Well, there were two reasons: they had a lot of help from both their families – just like Katy had had when Maya was growing up; and they were determined to make things perfect for their daughter.
Sometimes it still amazed Maya just how much love she felt for her little girl. And those were also the times, that a moment of sadness overcame the young mother. It was in those small instances that Maya asked herself how Kermit had managed to leave her many moons ago. The love she felt for Lynnie had been instantaneous and overwhelming for Maya. And even on the days she came home completely exhausted and just wanted to lie down and sleep, the sight of her daughter gave her strength.
Josh had been true to his word. He was doing his best to be there for Maya – to ease her doubts and insecurities – and for Lynnie. Lynnie was his little princess and already had the youngest Matthews wrapped around her little finger. Maya would bet her favorite paintbrush that Lynnie would grow up to be Daddy's little girl through and through. Both of them had been nervous at first – being new parents and all – but so far, they had managed pretty well and Lynnie was growing up healthy and happy.
Maya quietly opened the door to their apartment as not to disturb her possibly sleeping daughter. Josh was just exiting their bedroom while pulling a shirt over his head. A big grin came across his face as he saw his girlfriend standing in their living room. He quickly put a finger over his lip, indicating that their daughter was indeed just taking a nap. Maya quickly closed the distance between them to greet her boyfriend with a kiss and a hug. "Well hello there, Gorgeous," Josh said as he looked down at the blonde with a loving smile.
"Nice to see you too, Handsome," Maya played along. "How's my little angel?"
"Just fine," Josh said. "But don't you want to know how Lynnie's doing?"
Maya shoved the brunette boy. "Idiot," she scolded lovingly.
"You love me." Josh grinned at her sheepishly.
"I sometimes don't know why," Maya teased. "But I really do."
"Glad to hear that, Gorgeous." Josh kissed the blonde. "Because I love you, too. Very much so."
For a moment, Maya just smiled at him. "But really now, Josh. How's our daughter?"
"Sleeping like the perfect little angel she is," Josh said. "Apparently, she had a really great time with Grandma Amy, Grandpa Alan and Great-Grandpa Jon."
Maya giggled upon hearing the description. Yeah, their family was a little weird, but the blonde wouldn't have it any other way. While Josh had still been at work and Maya, Katy and Shawn had met with Diane, the elder Matthews and Jonathan – who were all currently in town for the weekend to spend some time with their respective families – had offered to take care of Mila, Nate and Lynnie. "I'm sure they did." Maya yawned.
Josh shot his girlfriend a worried look. He knew very well how exhausted she was at the moment, but there was only so much the young man could do for her – and he hated knowing that he couldn't help her more. "You know what, Maya," Josh started. "Lynnie's still fast asleep. How about you go take a nice long relaxing shower. I think you've earned it. You've had a long day."
Maya thought about this for a moment. "Yeah, I think that's a really good idea. Thanks, Josh. I'll just go take a peek at her and then head off to the bathroom."
"Take all the time you need, Gorgeous." Josh smiled softly at her.
Maya shook her head, not quite believing just how lucky she had been to find Josh. "You are the perfect man, you know that?"
"There's word on the street," Josh played along as Maya headed into their room.
The shower had done Maya really good. She was feeling all new and refreshed. Getting dressed in some leggings and Josh's old NYU-sweatshirt, Maya quickly pulled her still damp hair up in a ponytail. The shower had been great, but now the blonde wanted to do nothing more than spend some quality time with her little princess. And Josh of course.
Peeking into their bedroom, the blonde could see her boyfriend sitting in the rocking chair with their baby girl in his arms. Somehow, he managed to balance the little book he loved to read to her from in one of his hands while the other held the baby securely in place. Maya stood quietly in the door, careful not to call any attention to her; the young woman was completely content with just watching father and daughter. Lynnie looked up at her Daddy with big, curious dark blue eyes and Josh had an expression of pure love in his as he finished the story. "When the son came home that night, he stood for a long time at the top of the stairs. Then he went into the room where his very new baby daughter was sleeping. He picked her up in his arms and very slowly rocked her back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And while he rocked her he sang: I'll love you forever/I'll like you for always/As long as I'm living/my baby you'll be."
Josh carefully put the book away on the nightstand and just looked at their daughter for a moment. "You know, princess, my Mom used to read me that story back when I was a kid. I used to love it. Now I know you're still too young to understand it, but I really hope you'll grow up to like it, too." Carefully, Josh placed a tender kiss on the little girl's forehead, making Lynnie giggle in delight.
"She will," Maya called the attention to herself, startling the young man. She slowly left her place by the door and walked over to the two of them. "And even if it's just because it reminds her of her Daddy."
"Just like your singing," Josh pointed out as he handed the little girl to her mother.
"Haven't heard any complaints so far," Maya joked as she started making funny faces, causing Lynnie to start laughing.
Josh chuckled. "Can I leave the two of you alone for a moment?" he asked. "I promise, I'll be right back."
"I think we'll manage, won't we, Lynnie?" Maya focused on the little blonde in her arms. "Yes, we will; yes, we will." Shaking his head at his girlfriend's antics but knowing fully well that he was just the same when interacting with their baby, Josh slowly made his way out of the room. Maya played with Lynnie for a little while longer before sobering up a bit. The little girl yawned; apparently, she really had had a tiring day and Maya knew exactly what to do next.
Clearing her throat, she started humming a soft tune and slowly dancing across the room. She had a big variety of lullabies she loved to sing to her daughter. But one was her personal favorite. It was from a movie she had made her mother watch with her a dozen times while she was a child. Katy had taken to singing the song to her as well after a while and little Maya never went to sleep as easily as when she was being soothed by this very song. Katy had taken up singing it again when Mila and Nate were born, who had a similar reaction as Maya to the song. That was also how Maya had rediscovered her beloved old tune.
To Maya's delight, her daughter seemed to enjoy the song as well – giggling in delight every time she heard it – so the young mother took every chance she got to sing it to her: "Constant as the stars above/Always know that you are loved/And my love shining in you/Will help you make your dreams come true, Will help your dreams come true./The lamb lies down and rests its head/On its mother's downy bed/Dolphin plays in the moonlight's glow/And butterfly dreams of a violet rose/Dreams of a violet rose./I'll cradle you in my arms tonight/As sun embraces the moonlight/The clouds will carry our songs tonight!/Our dreams will run deep like the sea/Our dreams will run deep like the sea!/Constant as the stars above/Always know that you are loved!/And my love shining in you/Will help you make your dreams come true!/Will help your dreams come true ..." The blonde had been so focused on her baby daughter that she hadn't noticed Josh returning. The brown-haired young man, seeing his girlfriend and daughter completely immersed in each other, had opted to quietly remain by the door. He was completely content to just watch the two of them at the moment.
Finishing her song, the blonde placed a soft kiss on her daughter's forehead. The little girl let out a content huff of air and gazed up at her mother curiously. After finally being able to tear her gaze away from the little girl she loved with all her heart, Maya found her boyfriend looking at her with a strange expression on his face. "What? Do I have something on my face?" she asked, a teasing tone in her voice.
"Marry me," he suddenly said.
The girl was completely caught off guard by the question. "Come again?"
The boy just grinned. "Marry me."
Maya giggled nervously. "Very funny, Josh."
Instead of saying anything more, Josh approached his girlfriend with a big grin, all the while whistling a sweet and familiar tune. It was one of her favorite songs and her daughter's most beloved lullaby. Standing directly in front of her, the young mother was surprised when he suddenly started singing in a soft voice: "I'll swim and sail on savage seas/With never a fear of drowning/And gladly ride the waves of life/If you would marry me/No scorching sun nor freezing cold/Will stop me on my journey/If you will promise me your heart/And love …"
A loving smile stole itself on Maya's face as she joined her boyfriend: "And love me for eternity/My dearest one, my darling dear/Your mighty words astound me/But I've no need for mighty deeds/When I feel your arms around me."
When Josh took his turn singing again, the two of them started slowly dancing through the room. Baby Lynnie, who was still cuddled up in her mother's arms looked up at both her parents with a big smile on her face. Josh and Maya looked down at their daughter and couldn't help but reciprocate the expression. "But I would bring you rings of gold/I'd even sing you poetry/And I would keep you from all harm/If you would stay beside me."
Maya took over and the three of them continued dancing together. "I have no use for rings of gold/I care not for your poetry/I only want your hand to hold."
"I only want you near me." Josh sang the next line as he pulled his girlfriend and daughter close to him.
Maya giggled and, together, they sang the next part: "To love and kiss!/To sweetly hold!/For the dancing and the dreaming!/Through all those horrors and those nights!/I'll keep your love beside me!/I'll swim and sail on savage seas/With never a fear of drowning/And gladly ride the waves of life/If you would marry me!"
As he sang the last line, Josh slowly got down on one knee in front of his girlfriend and daughter: "If you will marry me."
Maya looked at the young man with wide eyes, realizing with a start that he wasn't just kidding around now. "You're serious?" Pulling a small, black box out of his jeans pocket, Josh gave his girlfriend a loving smile. Holding on tightly to the baby still lying in her arms, the blonde gasped and happy tears started gathering in her eyes. "You are."
Josh grinned at her nervously as he tried to gather up the courage, he needed to get out everything he wanted to say. "As you can probably assume, I've been thinking about this for quite a while now. Almost a year to be exact. I bought this ring the day after you told me that you were pregnant with our little princess here."
Maya gasped once more at that. "But then why …"
"I was waiting for the perfect moment," Josh admitted sheepishly.
The blonde gave him a disbelieving but teasing look at that. "And the perfect moment is while I am holding our daughter, wearing leggings and your old sweater from NYU? After having just taken a shower, my hair still damp and unkempt. With no make-up on whatsoever?" Maya laughed nervously. "Josh, you have to admit, I'm not really looking my best right now."
A loving look came across Josh's face. "You have never been more gorgeous," he told her simply. "Maya, you don't need fancy clothes or a face full of make-up to be beautiful. Seeing you standing there, with our daughter in your arms, wearing comfy clothes, you're perfect. That's what I come home to every night. And I would like to continue coming home to you for the rest of our lives, if you'll let me."
The blonde was speechless. "Josh …"
"I love you, Maya," the young man interrupted her. "I've been carrying this ring around with me for a long time now, waiting for the perfect moment. I didn't want you to think I only proposed to you because you were pregnant, so I waited. Then, I didn't want you to think I only proposed to you because we just had a daughter, so I waited again. Then I didn't want you to think I only proposed to you because your best friend just got engaged, so I waited once more." Josh shook his head, laughing. "And when I saw you tonight, I just got so tired of waiting. I love you, Maya. And I love our little princess here. You two are my family and I know we don't have to, but I would like to make it official. I want to spend my life with you. So, before I continue babbling on like the completely lovestruck idiot that I am, will you please put me out of my misery?" Josh chuckled and Maya giggled. "Maya Penelope Hunter, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
Happy tears were now flowing freely down Maya's cheeks. This was it, the young man she had loved since they were kids was kneeling in front of her, asking her to marry him. For them and Lynnie to officially be a family. It was a big question, a life-altering decision for the young mother to make. It should have been hard for Maya because, as we all know, our favorite blonde had never been fond of change. She had even been a bit hesitant about her parents' wedding back in the day. But the decision was actually really easy. As it had been the case with Shawn and Katy, the love she and Josh shared was what convinced the young mother. There only was one right answer. "Of course, I will!" she exclaimed.
A brilliant smile came across Josh's features as he placed the ring on Maya's hand before jumping up and kissing her passionately. He then enveloped both the young woman and their daughter in a tight hug, not quite believing his own luck. She had said yes. They were engaged. They were getting married!
"You ready?" Josh asked nervously as he, Maya and Lynnie were standing in front of the Hunters' front door the next day. The young man had been jittery all day.
"Calm down, Josh," Maya teased, balancing Lynnie on her hip. "I told you, Shawn's been waiting one year for this moment. Plus, you told me you even asked his and Mom's permission – which I still think was very sweet of you. We told Riley and Farkle last night, so they're already in the loop. Your parents know as well and everyone else will be happy. Everything's going to be fine."
Josh kissed his fiancé quickly. "I know," he said. "And I'm not scared-nervous. I'm happy-nervous. Like, I'm feeling like this is an amazing dream and, as soon as we tell everyone, I'll wake up and be back in my first year of college, rooming with Shnoop-a-loop."
Maya burst out laughing. "Not happening, Boing." She grinned. "I have a ring on my finger now, so there's no getting rid of me quite so easily."
"Good to know." Josh took a deep breath. "Okay, let's do this." Grabbing Maya's hand and pulling her with him, he threw open the door. "Hey family!"
And with that the big greetings commenced. Because inside were not only the Hunters, but also the Matthews – including Amy, Alan and honorary-Matthews Farkle – and Jonathan Turner. There were a few rounds of "My brothers!" from Josh, Cory and Shawn and a lot of hugs from everyone and kisses for little baby Lynnie. After everything had finally calmed down a little bit, the Hunter-Matthews clan sat down … well, everywhere it was possible to sit down on. Lynnie was in the arms of her proud Grandma Amy while Topanga and Katy sat next to her, all the while making funny faces to amuse the baby.
Just then, the two youngest Hunters and Auggie came barreling out of one of the rooms, where they had probably been playing, to join the festivities. Mila and Nate laid eyes on their big sister first while Auggie went over to greet his favorite uncle. "Maya!" the two chorused and tackled the blonde in a hug.
"Hey there, munchkins!" Maya greeted and hugged both of them tightly.
"Did you bring our little niece?" Mila immediately asked. The little brunette had taken a shine to Maya and Josh's daughter and was a really proud aunt.
"Right over there with Amy, Topanga and Mom," Maya pointed out and Mila took off towards them.
"And Uncle Joshie?" Nate quickly inquired. It was so cute to see how much her little brother looked up to her fiancé.
But before Maya could answer, another voice chimed in: "Right here."
"Uncle Joshie!"
"Mister Nate!" Josh called back and the little guy barreled into the young man, who immediately caught him and set him on his shoulders – just like he had always done with Auggie. "Come here!"
"I love it up here," Nate said, making everyone laugh. They all remembered the similar situation taking place many moons ago.
Mila eventually headed back over and approached the two guys shyly. "Hi Uncle Josh."
"Why hello, Miss Mila." Josh took a bow, making Nate giggle in delight. The young man carefully sat the little guy back down on the ground and enveloped the girl in a tight hug. The little brunette blushed furiously and Maya's eyes almost dropped out. No way! God, this was so cute!
And apparently, Maya wasn't the only one who noticed. "Well, would you look at that, Shawnie," Cory gently shoved his best friend. "Looks like Mila and Maya are even more alike than we all thought."
"What are you talking about, Cor?" Shawn asked curiously.
"Isn't it obvious, Shawn," Jon jumped in. "It seems like Mila is developing her first crush – on Little Matthews."
"What?" Shawn's eyes got wide and his jaw dropped. "No way! Not happening! She's way too young for that!"
"Well would you look at that," Katy chimed in. "There's just something about those Matthews boy that appeals to the Hunter girls."
"Is that so?" Shawn teased his wife. "Then what about you, Katy? Have you fallen for a Matthews boy?"
"Sure have." Katy grinned, making Shawn's eyes almost drop out. "An honorary one." Shawn blushed and quickly leaned over to place a kiss on his wife's cheek.
"Well, what can I say," Maya jumped in as she sat down beside her mother. "Us Hunter girls just have good taste, don't we Mom?"
"Sure do, baby girl." Katy gave her eldest daughter a side hug and a kiss on the forehead.
Meanwhile, Josh had taken a seat as well with little Mila sticking closely to his side. Lynnie had been passed on to her proud Grandpa Shawn and was now being entertained by her other Grandpa Alan and honorary Great-Grandpa Jon. Nate had made himself comfortable on Cory's lap, much to the teacher's delight, who still liked to refer to the youngest Hunter as "Little Cory" because of his middle name. Something that amused little Nate and caused Shawn, Topanga and Katy to roll their eyes at their friend's antics.
With everyone in deep conversation, Maya eventually looked over to Josh, only to find him already looking right at her. She gave him a small nod; this was the right time. The blonde could see her fiancé taking a deep breath before he cleared his throat, stood up and walked over to the mother of his child. "I'm sorry to interrupt you guys, but if I could have your attention for just one moment." Maya stood up and took her place next to the brunette young man. The blonde quickly grabbed her fiancé's hand. "Maya and I have something we'd like to share with you."
One could have heard a needle drop in the complete silence that now spread across the room. Not even Lynnie, who had been giggling and babbling while playing with her grandfathers, made a peep. Maya looked across the room that held all the people most dear to her in the world an took a deep breath. "We're engaged!" she blurted out. The stunned silence held on for a only a few seconds before everyone jumped up to congratulate the couple.
After having been enveloped in a dozen hugs, Maya finally came face to face with her parents. Shawn and Katy looked at their daughter with matching grins. "Congratulations, baby girl." Katy was first to hug her. "I'm so happy for you two."
"Thanks, Mom." Maya smiled warmly at her mother before turning to her father. "Well, Dad? What do you say?"
"Well, I'd like to remind you that I called this last year already," Shawn teased as he enveloped his eldest daughter in a tight hug. "Congratulations, kiddo. Little Matthews is one lucky guy."
Maya giggled. "We're both lucky." She paused for a moment. "Daddy?"
"Yes, kiddo?"
"I wanted to ask you something," Maya started, but trailed off. She took a deep breath before finally meeting her father's gaze again. "Would you walk me down the aisle?"
Katy gasped and gave her daughter a proud smile. Shawn was quiet for a moment. "I'd be honored," he finally said in a hoarse voice. "Thanks for asking, kiddo."
"Thanks for being here, Dad." Maya smiled as she gave her father another hug.
"I wouldn't wanna be anywhere else."
"We're next." Maya could hear Amy Matthews' voice behind her. She let go of her father and turned around to see the elder Matthews approaching her. Amy enveloped her in a big hug first. "I've been wondering how long Josh would take to ask you. And I have to say, I'm really happy for the two of you – and for Lynnie of course."
"Thanks, Amy." Maya closed her eyes as she just let herself enjoy the hug from her future mother-in-law. Amy always did give the best hugs.
"You know, Maya," Amy started. "I've always been very protective of Josh. He is the youngest and my little miracle baby. I don't think either Alan or I would have parted with him easily for just any girl that came along. But seeing him with you, the way the two of you love each other and the way you love that little girl of yours. I don't think he could have found someone more perfect for him than you."
Tears had started gathering in Maya's eyes and she was glad that she still had her head buried in Amy's shoulder. "Thanks, Amy. It means a lot to hear you say that."
"My turn," Alan interrupted them. Amy stepped back to give her husband a turn to hug their future daughter-in-law. "I'm very glad that Josh found you, Maya. You're just what he needs. He grew up basically as an only child and with parents on the older side. He was loved, but also a bit sheltered. Like you did with Riley, you got him to come out of his shell and, in turn, he helped Riley keep you out of trouble." Alan grinned at the girl and Maya started giggling. "You complement each other. Like we do with Shawn, both Amy and I have always considered you to be a part of our family. But I have to say, I'm really looking forward to calling you my daughter-in-law."
Maya blinked a few stray tears away. "I'm really looking forward to being your daughter-in-law. You raised a good son, Alan." She turned to look at Amy. "You both have."
A little while later, the excitement had just died down a bit, Cory cleared his throat. "Alright people," he started. "We're all very happy for you, Maya and Josh. But now, let's get down to business." Cory pulled out a piece of paper. "Let's see who won."
Maya groaned, remembering the bet Shawn had told her about a year earlier. Josh, Riley and Farkle just looked confused, not quite following what was going on, so the blonde quickly filled them in. Suddenly, Maya burst out laughing, remembering just what Shawn had told her about the bet. "She won again, didn't she?" Maya turned to Cory. "Shawn told me last year that Topanga bet it would take us another year to get engaged. She won, didn't she?"
"No!" Shawn exclaimed. "Oh, come on!"
A pleased expression came across Topanga's face as she looked at her husband expectantly. "Well, Cory? Did I win again?"
"Not so fast, Topanga," Jonathan interrupted before Cory had a chance to say something. "Now if my friend Matthews over there would just take a closer look at the document, I think he'll find that you, Topanga, bet on them getting engaged two weeks ago. I, however, bet on them getting engaged last week."
Topanga glared at her former teacher. "You," she seethed, causing everyone to chuckle.
"Me," Jonathan imitated her. "Matthews, would you be so kind?"
Topanga growled, causing Cory to suddenly look very uncomfortable – and to be honest, a bit scared. "He did," he admitted while taking a step back, trying to avoid his wife's rage.
"I can live with that." Shawn nodded. "Good going, Jon."
"Thanks Shawn." Jonathan held out his hand and the other adults – including Amy and Alan – paid up. "Pleasure doing business with you all." He turned to the newly engaged couple. "Shawn's daughter, Shawn's future son-in-law, I'm really happy for the both of you – and my little honorary great-granddaughter."
"Thanks Jon," Maya said and Josh nodded in agreement. The two of them took turns hugging the older man.
"You know what that means, Peaches?" Riley suddenly said.
"What, Honey?" Maya asked.
"More wedding planning for Topanga," Farkle explained.
Everyone burst out laughing at that and a pleased expression crossed Topanga's face. "If you'd like me to help, I'd be happy to."
Maya and Josh shared a look. "We'd be honored." And that once again resulted in another round of hugs curtesy of the newly engaged couple, this time for Topanga.
6 months after the big engagement
To say that the next six months had been very eventful would have to be an understatement. Three months after Maya and Josh's engagement, Riley Matthews finally became Mrs. Farkle Minkus; however, so far there had been no talk about any future baby Minki. The wedding had been a grande and beautiful event – Jennifer and Topanga had really outdone themselves. Riley and Farkle had gotten married in a beautiful church and the reception had been held at a five-star hotel.
After hearing about the engagement of his son and future daughter-in-law's best friends, Stuart had offered to let them turn the event into a double wedding. I'd guess that all of you can imagine Riley's reaction to this offer – "Yay!" – and Farkle couldn't have agreed more. Maya and Josh had given it a lot of thought and, eventually, had thanked Stuart for his offer, but politely declined it. They were both glad that Riley would have the big beautiful Disney-princess wedding she had dreamed off ever since she was a little girl, but that wasn't Maya and it also wasn't Josh. Both of them wanted a small simple wedding – well, as small as was possible with the whole Hunter-Matthews-clan attending. Riley had been sad at first, but both she and Farkle had respected their best friends' wishes.
Mr. Feeny sadly couldn't be there to officiate this wedding. Cory, Shawn, Topanga and Eric's favorite teacher had passed on a few years prior. It had been a sad day for the whole Hunter-Matthews clan to lose their beloved friend and mentor – Eric Matthews had taken it especially hard. Mr. Feeny had died in his sleep, so everyone was glad to say that he hadn't suffered. He had been fit – mentally and physically – up until his last day and had been able to enjoy a long, fulfilled life with his beautiful wife Dean Lila Bolander by his side.
Anyway, like I said. The wedding had been beautiful. Maya had been Riley's maid of honor while Smackle and Ava had been bridesmaids. Farkle had asked Josh to be his best man while Lucas and Zay had come back from Texas to serve as groomsmen alongside Auggie. Yes everyone, that meant that a delighted Smackle had been escorted down the aisle by both Lucas and Zay. Mila and Lynnie – in the arms of her Grandma Katy – had been the flower girls and Nate the ring-bearer. Cory had had a hard time walking his little girl down the aisle. But, after a stern look from Topanga, he had given the bride to the groom waiting at the end of the aisle.
At the reception, to everyone's delight, Maya had caught the bouquet and Josh the garter. The whole wedding party had burst out laughing. "Well," Maya had said. "Can't argue with that." Josh had chuckled before kissing his fiancé firmly on the lips. The two of them had danced the night away, mostly with their little daughter in their arms.
And now, six months after the big engagement, we are finally here. The wedding we have all been waiting for. The day Maya Penelope Hunter would become Maya Penelope Matthews.
After some argument between them and Topanga, Maya and Josh had managed to keep to their dreams of having their wedding be a small affair. Katy had jumped in to help with the planning and had, of course, been on her daughter's side. Together, the three of them, had managed to keep Topanga – who had still been on quite a high from planning her daughter's big wedding – in check. And, not to be bragging, but all four of them had managed to plan one heck of a wedding.
Maya had asked Riley to be her maid-of-honor and Cory was Josh's best man. The wedding took place outdoors in a park – with a big lake and gazebo – while the reception was being held in at a small reception hall nearby. Between the lake and the gazebo, there was a beautiful wedding arch, where Maya and Josh would stand underneath. In front of the arch, enough chairs had been placed to seat the whole Hunter-Matthews clan as well as their closest friends Lucas, Smackle and Zay as well as Andrew, Charlie and Jasmine. Maya was especially glad that Emma, Nick and Carolyn had managed to find the time to make the journey back to New York to attend as well. Once again, Mila would be the flower girl – with help from Lynnie – while Nate was the ring-bearer.
Maya had spent the night before the wedding at her parents' place along with Lynnie – after all, it was bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. Currently, the blonde and her best friend were sitting in her old bedroom, getting ready for Maya's big day; Lynnie was outside in the living room, probably being spoilt rotten by her proud Grandpa Shawn. Just as Maya was sitting down to start applying her make-up, she and Riley could hear a soft knock on the door. "Come in," the blonde called.
"Hey there, baby girl." Katy poked her head inside. "You ready for me to do your hair?"
"Sure, Mom." Maya smiled and Katy took her place behind her daughter.
Riley sighed. "Parents who knock before entering a room, that must be nice."
"Oh, calm down, Mrs. Minkus," Maya teased, causing Katy to start giggling. "You haven't been living with them for years now."
Riley was quiet for a moment. "Has it really been that long?"
"Hate to break it to you honey, but I'm 23, which makes you 22." Maya chuckled nervously. "We haven't been living at home for more than a couple of days for a good four years now."
"You're lying!" Riley accused.
"Maya's right, Riley. The years really have gone by and the two of you have grown up into two beautiful young women," Katy said. "And now stop growing up!"
Maya and Riley burst out laughing at that. "Guys, I really don't want to burst your bubble, but," Maya started. "Mom, you're a mother of three and a grandmother of one. Both you and Riley are old married ladies now and I'll be joining the ranks soon. Plus, I'm a mother, too. We're all not that young anymore."
Katy and Riley were quiet for a moment. "Oh, hush you!" Katy exclaimed.
"Yeah," Riley agreed. "And how come you're so calm about that? About becoming and old married lady like us? It's your wedding day, why are you not freaking out on us?"
"Oh my God, you're right!" Maya exclaimed. "After all, Josh and I have only known each other for 18 years, have only dated for 8 of them and have only one child together." Maya paused for dramatic effect. "Guys, do you think I'm rushing into this?"
Katy and Riley couldn't help themselves from laughing at this. "That's not what we mean, baby girl," Katy said. "It's pretty normal for the bride to freak out on her wedding day."
"I did," Riley pointed out. And she really had, but that's a story for another day. Suffice it to say that it had nothing to do with Farkle, but rather with … certain things not going exactly according to plan.
"Why should I? Mom, you were completely calm on your wedding day," Maya pointed out. "Guys, I'm marrying the man I love and the father of my daughter."
"But you have insecurities and Daddy issues," Riley blurted out. Her eyes widened upon realizing what exactly she had said. "I'm so sorry, Peaches."
"Don't be, Honey. You have a point there," Maya assured her best friend. "But you're wrong about one thing. Had."
Riley and Katy shot each other confused looks. "Come again?"
"It's had. Not have," Maya said. "I had insecurities and Daddy issues." Maya paused for a moment before elaborating further. "Now I'm not saying that they're not still buried somewhere in my dungeon of sadness. But I have learned not to let them control me anymore. Mom, you and Dad have played a big part in helping me overcome them – so have Mila and Nate, for the matter. And there were some situations when I was scared that Josh might just up and leave one day – even though, rationally, I knew he would never do that. But, piece by piece, step by step, he convinced me that he was different. He restored my faith that a man – my man – can be kind and a father – my daughter's father can stay." Looking at her best friend and mother in the mirror, Maya could see both of them starting to swoon. "I love Josh and he loves me. I trust him. And I really can't wait to marry him."
Katy and Riley both took a moment to absorb Maya's little speech. They looked at each other and shared a nod. "Then I'd say we better hurry with getting you ready," Katy said. "Because I can't wait for Josh to be my son-in-law as well."
"I totally agree," Riley chimed in. "Let's go get you married, Aunty Peaches!"
Maya Hunter took a deep breath. After finishing getting ready, she had asked her mother and best friend to give her a moment alone. They had complied, realizing that this was something Maya needed. The blonde looked at her reflection in the mirror. She was wearing a dress that was actually pretty similar to her mother's wedding dress, making her look like a fairy princess as well. Maya had left her hair flowing in loose ways down her back. Some small sequins were woven in her blonde locks and a beautiful flower crown was placed on top of the young woman's head. Her make-up was light, merely enhancing the blonde's natural beauty. But the most beautiful thing about Maya was the smile on her face and the look of pure love in her eyes. It was the look of a woman who was about to marry the love of her life.
Taking another deep breath, Maya finally opened the door. She knew that Riley and Katy had already taken off with Lynnie in tow, so the only people remaining in the apartment were Maya and Shawn. The blonde slowly entered the living room, only to find her father anxiously sitting on the couch waiting for her. She cleared her throat softly and Shawn jumped up out of his seat. His eyes widened upon seeing his little girl standing there, right in front of him, in her wedding dress. His jaw dropped and, right then, he was not able to form a clear thought.
Slightly chuckling, Maya did a little twirl and decided to help her father out a bit. "What do you think, Daddy?" she asked nervously. "You think Josh is going to marry me like this?"
Shawn gulped. "I think Josh is one lucky guy," he said in a hoarse voice. "Maya, you look absolutely beautiful."
Maya quickly blinked away the tears that were starting to gather in her eyes. "Thank you, Daddy." And with that, the blonde took off to envelop her father in a tight hug. "And I want you to know that, even though I'll soon be an old married lady with a one-year-old daughter, I'll always be your little girl. I love you, Daddy."
"I love you too, kiddo. You have no idea how much," Shawn said, hugging the blonde even tighter to him and blinking a few tears away himself. "Good God, you're making me cry and the ceremony hasn't even started."
"I'm not doing too well myself," Maya admitted and the two of them shared a sweet laugh. "So, I'd say we better get going before we end up blubbering like two emotional wrecks."
"Good idea." Shawn took a deep breath, trying to compose himself, and held out his hand to his daughter. "You ready, kiddo?"
A brilliant smile spread across the young woman's face. "With you by my side?" she asked. "Always."
The wedding venue was beautiful and, by the time Maya and Shawn arrived, everyone was already in place. Well, almost everybody. Topanga was still busy, pushing and pulling a few people around to get them exactly where she wanted them – ahem, Eric, ahem, Jack. Shawn and Maya took their places behind Mila, Nate and Lynnie, as well as Cory and Riley. Maya once again was told how beautiful she looked by Cory, Topanga and her siblings, and made sure to give her little girl a kiss and a hug, before Topanga – wedding planner extraordinaire – gave the musicians their signal and hurried to take her place as well.
The three children walked down he aisle first. Nate was wearing a cute little tuxedo with a white shirt and light blue tie. The girls wore light blue dresses and had flower crowns in their hair, just like the bride. Nate took one of Lynnie's hands, while Mila helped her throw flowers on the ground. Their little trio was greeted with a lot of Aws as they made their way towards Josh and the minister. Josh greeted the three kids with a hug – and a kiss for his daughter – before they took their place next to Katy. Cory and Riley were next. Their wedding attire was very similar to that of the kids, just the grown-up version of both the tuxedo and the dresses.
Everyone stood up as the bride and her father started to make their way down the aisle next. Once again, people awed and the first guests had to get out their tissues already. Maya, however, didn't notice any of that. The blonde's eyes were focused solely on the young man waiting for her at the end of the aisle. The moment Josh had spotted Maya, his eyes had gone wide and his jaw had dropped. Just like he had done at Shawn's wedding a few years before, Cory gently shoved his brother and Josh composed himself. His and Maya's gaze never once broke and the look the two of them shared was filled with pure love.
Reaching the end of the aisle, Shawn carefully placed Maya's hand in Josh's and gave her a kiss on the cheek, before sitting down next to his wife. Katy immediately took his hand in a reassuring gesture. It was hard for both of them to let go of their little girl, but they knew that she couldn't have found a better man than the one who was standing up there under the arch with her.
"Dear family and friends," the minister started. "We are gathered here today to witness the joining of two souls. Joshua Gabriel Matthews and Maya Penelope Hunter." Maya and Josh grinned at each other. "Now, I believe you've written your own vows."
"We have." Maya nodded. "I used to believe that hope was for suckers. I used to not believe in love or happily-ever-afters. I used to be a girl with deep-running insecurities and Daddy issues. Today, I am standing here, and I am about to marry the love of my life. And I am happy to say that – while this girl will always be a part of me – I am not her anymore." A soft smile appeared on Maya's face. "A lot of people have taught me that hope isn't for suckers. A lot of people have taught me to believe in love and that happily-ever-afters sometimes do come true. A lot of people have helped me overcome my insecurities and Daddy issues. And one of those people was you, Josh." A brilliant smile spread across the young man's face. "Many moons ago – 18 years to be precise – we met. Just a five-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy. We became friends and then eventually – someday – we became more than that. We became boyfriend and girlfriend, roommates and parents to our beautiful little princess." Maya looked over to see Lynnie sitting in her Grandma Katy's lap. "It's safe to say that we haven't taken the most traditional route." Their guests chuckled at that. "But I wouldn't change a single thing about it. This is our journey, our story, our someday and I'm excited to see what life has in store for us in the future."
Complete silence spread across the room as everyone listened to Maya deliver the last lines of her vows. The only sound that could be heard was that of people sniffling and trying to find their tissues. The loving look in Josh's eyes had intensified – yes, I hadn't thought it possible either. He leaned over and gave his bride a sweet kiss on the cheek. Maya gave him a brilliant smile and Josh, after straightening up again, took a deep breath and started talking as well.
"18 years ago, my parents brought me along to visit my older brother and his family. Back then I had no idea that this visit would introduce met to the girl I'd spend the rest of my life with. I met this timid little blonde girl – my favorite niece's best friend – who quickly wormed her way into my heart and became my friend. We saw each other occasionally over the next couple of years and suddenly, I realized that my cute little friend had turned into a beautiful young woman. It took me a while to admit to my feelings. That was, for one, due to the fact that there was a bit of an age difference between us." People chuckled at that. "But it was also, because I knew – even at our young age back then – that if we did this, when we did this – us – I wanted it to last. It took us a little while to get here, but I wouldn't want to change our journey for anything in the world." Maya grinned upon hearing his words, sounding so similar to her own words from before. "When I was still a little kid, my older brother Cory told me that, one day, I might meet a woman as wonderful as Topanga; and make a friend like Shawn." Cory smiled fondly at this particular memory. "And I think I found both of that – in you, Maya." A small tear stole its way down Maya's cheek. "We've been part of each other's lives for many years already and I never want that to change. I want the rest of our lives to be just like our life is right now. You, me and Lynnie, surrounded by all the people we love most in the world. I know that sometimes live happens and things can change, but hey, a guy can always dream." Maya couldn't keep herself from giggling at that and everyone soon joined in. "So that's what I'm looking forward to: to us living our dream."
The minister gave the young couple and their guests a moment to compose themselves, before he continued with the ceremony. "Do you, Maya, take Joshua to have and to hold until death do you part?" the minister asked.
"I do," Maya said with a brilliant smile.
"And do you, Joshua, take Maya to have and to hold until death do you part?"
"I do," Josh said, an equally big smile on his face.
"May I have the rings, please?"
Maya and Josh looked towards Nate, only to find him no longer holding the little pillow that their rings had been tied to. They could hear someone clearing their throat and turned their heads in the other direction. Both of their hearts welled up at the sight that greeted them. Katy was standing a few feet away from them with Lynnie, holding the small pillow, and softly whispering to her granddaughter. "Come on, Lyn. Just like we practiced. Got to Mommy and Daddy!" Lynnie took a few tentative steps towards her parents, while being encouraged by Maya's little siblings.
"Go on, Lyn," Nate said.
"You can do it, Lynnie," Mila added.
Maya and Josh watched their little girl with matching proud expressions on their faces. However, shortly before reaching her parents, Lynnie took a detour and headed straight for her Grandpa Shawn. All the guests started chuckling as Shawn enveloped his granddaughter in a hug. "Good job," he praised as he gently spun her around. "Now go to Mommy and Daddy."
"Sorry, guys," Katy chimed in. "Whenever we practiced, Shawn filled in for Maya and Josh."
Maya giggled and Josh shook his head laughing as Lynnie now started her second attempt. Maya crouched down a little and Josh imitated her action. "Come here, Lynnie," Maya encouraged the little girl. "Come to Mommy and Daddy."
"We're right here, Lynnie," Josh added. With her eyes now focused solely on her parents, Lynnie headed straight for Maya and Josh and was quickly enveloped in a big hug by both of them. Riley came over and picked the little girl up. She placed the small blonde on her hip and made sure Lynnie could have a good view of her parents.
Josh handed the rings to the minister. The minister placed the first ring in Maya's hand. "Maya, as you place this ring on Joshua's hand, please repeat after me," he said. "I give you this ring as a symbol of my love for you. Let it be a reminder that I am always by your side."
Maya did as he said. "I give you this ring as a symbol of my love for you. Let it be a reminder that I am always by your side."
The minister placed the second ring in Josh's hand. "Joshua, as you place this ring on Maya's hand, please repeat after me," he said. "I give you this ring as a symbol of my love for you. Let it be a reminder that I am always by your side."
Josh imitated Maya's actions. "I give you this ring as a symbol of my love for you. Let it be a reminder that I am always by your side."
A soft smile appeared on the minister's face. "Then I now pronounce you man and wife," he declared. "You may kiss the bride." Well, let's just say that Josh didn't have to be told twice. He gathered up his new wife in his arms and kissed her firmly.
After the two newlyweds separated, they were swept up in a hug by both Riley and Cory. Maya quickly took hold of their daughter and Josh, upon seeing that, enveloped his girls in a tight hug. And with all of their guests cheering in the background, the little family couldn't quite believe their luck. They had finally done it: piece by piece, step by step, they had finally reached their happily ever after. And both Maya and Josh were excited to see what the future would hold for them.

I grew up before Disney's Tangled (2010) came out, so for a long time Barbie's was my go-to Rapunzel movie. Even though I love Tangled, the Barbie movie has a special place in my heart. And I still love the lullaby.
