It was looking like an average day in Corona. The sun was shining, the breeze was cool, and Rapunzel got up early. The morning sickness seemed to be subsiding but every once in a while she would feel it come on. Eugene felt the bed shift as Rapunzel got off. He sat up, brushing his hair back out of his face.
"Good morning, Sunshine. How do you feel?" he asked.
"I feel good. No morning sickness." She went to the closet and Eugene followed her in. He was happy to see her feeling better. They quickly got changed and they walked out to get ready for the day ahead. Eugene pulled Rapunzel close and gave her a kiss. She wrapped her arms around his neck. They moved apart and Rapunzel grabbed his hand as she started walking to the door. They were ready for the day, or so they thought.
Around lunchtime, Rapunzel went to her room while Eugene was talking to a guard in the hallway. She was coming to check on Pascal, who had been sick for a few days. She figured it was a cold, since it was nearly autumn, but he wasn't showing any signs of getting better. He wasn't his normal happy self. Suddenly, he started coughing and looked like he was having trouble breathing. This scared Rapunzel as she ran to the door.
"Eugene! Eugene!" she called to him. He came running around the corner to Rapunzel.
He put his hands on her shoulders and asked "What is it? Are you okay?" He noticed Rapunzel was starting to tear up.
"I'm fine but I don't think Pascal is." she said in between the tears. Eugene moved past her to where Pascal was. He was coughing less but still struggling to breathe. Rapunzel kneeled down by Eugene who was trying to position Pascal so he could breathe.
"Come on, buddy. You've gotta help me here." Eugene told him. Pascal let out a small smile and looked at Rapunzel and back to Eugene. He then slowly sank into Eugene's hands. Rapunzel broke down and started crying. Eugene set Pascal down on his bed then held his wife as she cried into his shirt. He couldn't imagine how hard this was on Rapunzel. Losing her best friend that she's had for 16 years. He did his best to comfort her. Eventually, she fell asleep in his arms. He picked her up and put her on the bed. Even though it was still early afternoon, he decided it would be best to let her sleep. He got a small silk handkerchief and laid it over Pascal. He sat by the window thinking about how this will affect Rapunzel.
He didn't know how long he sat there until he looked out the window and saw the sun starting to set. He turned to see that Rapunzel was still asleep. He knew she was in a lot of pain, and being pregnant probably didn't help. He left the room quietly to find the queen. Figuring that she was in the library, he headed there first. As he walked, his hands were in his pockets and he looked at the floor. Once arriving at the library, he opened the door and saw that the queen was sitting in her usual spot. The queen looked up from her book when she heard the door open.
"Good evening, Eugene. Is everything alright?" she asked, seeing that he looked upset.
"I don't know if you heard but Pascal passed away around noon today." Eugene said.
"Oh I'm so sorry. How is Rapunzel?" the queen said as she put her book down.
"She cried herself to sleep, if that tells you anything. I came to ask you if there was something that I could do to help her." Eugene told her.
"Just be there for her. Whatever she needs, do your best to get it for her. Stay by her side. She'll grieve for a while but eventually she will be okay." the queen replied. Eugene smiled a little, thanked her, and left to his room. He was hoping Rapunzel would still be asleep. His prayers were answered when he walked in and she was in the same place he left her. He sat in the chair in the corner so he didn't disturb her. The sun went down and the stars were shining. Eugene decided to go change and go to bed. He did so as quietly as possible but when he climbed in bed, the weight shift woke up Rapunzel. She looked over at him and moved her body closer to him. Eugene's hands immediately fell to her stomach where a bump was starting to form. Rapunzel put her hands over the top of his and let out a small smile. She may have lost one of her best friends but she still had Eugene, and soon, the baby. She pulled herself even closer to him and he wrapped his arms around her. She laid there with her hands on his bare chest. Eugene placed a kiss on the top of her head.
"I love you, Sunshine." he whispered.
"I love you too, Eugene. To the moon and back." she whispered back to him. "Thank you for everything."
"No matter what happens, I'll always be here for you." he said as he leaned down to kiss her. They fell asleep soon after.
