The first snowfall in Corona always excited Rapunzel. Eugene wasn't a big fan of snow but if it made her happy, he would tolerate it. When Rapunzel woke up that morning, seeing the white blanket that covered the kingdom, she threw the covers off and jumped out of bed. Eugene was roused from his sleep and smiled when he saw how happy his wife was. She hastily put on her winter clothes while Eugene watched. She quietly hummed as she moved around the room. It took her a few minutes to notice that Eugene was awake.
"Come on, Eugene. Let's go out and take a walk in the snow." Rapunzel told him.
"Ok but no snowballs like last time it snowed. You got it up my nose." Eugene said, motioning to his face.
"Oh come on. You know it was funny. I certainly enjoyed it." she said while smiling. "Now get up and get dressed. There's a lot of things I want to do today."
"Alright I'm getting up. You can be so demanding sometimes." he said jokingly. He got quickly got dressed and walked out of the room with Rapunzel. The headed to town and were greeted by many of the townsfolk. They spent the whole morning in town, going to all the shops and visiting the vendors. Rapunzel was having a good time but Eugene wasn't. He started to feel dizzy and nauseous. This wasn't a normal occurrence as Eugene never got sick. He tried to ignore the feeling but it kept getting worse. Not soon after, Eugene stopped walking, stood there for a second, and then passed out. This scared Rapunzel. She kneeled down next to him and felt his forehead. He was burning up. She called for a doctor and a man ran up to them.
"Your highness, is everything okay?" the man asked.
"Does it look like everything okay?" she replied harshly.
"My apologies. I'm Dr. Miller. I suggest we get him somewhere warm and away from people." he said.
A few of the citizens helped carry Eugene to the hospital wing of the castle. The civilian doctor left and the royal doctor took over. He had Rapunzel wait out in the hallway while he ran some tests. The queen came around the corner upon hearing the news. She was worried for Eugene but also for her daughter. Rapunzel was pacing the hallway with a nervous look on her face. When she saw her mother, she threw herself into her arms.
"Oh, honey, it's alright." Ariana said while trying to comfort Rapunzel.
"I'm just scared. What if he doesn't wake up?" she asked.
"He will. You just need hope." Ariana told her. Just then the doctor walked out to them.
"Your highness, the tests all point to pneumonia. I've given your husband some medicine that should help him. I'll have to keep an eye on him but he should make a full recovery in a week or two." he stated.
"Can I see him?" Rapunzel once he was finished.
"Yes. He's asleep now but you may see him. I have some work to do so have a good day." He left to his office and Rapunzel went in to see Eugene. She pulled up a chair next to his bed and held his hand.
"I'm right here, Eugene." she said quietly. Eugene's eyes fluttered open and a small smile crept onto his face.
"Hi, Sunshine." he muttered.
"Hello, Eugene. How do you feel?" she asked him.
"I feel like I've been run over by a herd of horses." he said in a groggy voice. Rapunzel kissed his his forehead and smiled. He was going to be okay. She knew he would. She stayed with him for the whole week he was in the hospital. She never left his side until he was released. That afternoon, they sat outside on the bench in the garden. Eugene held Rapunzel close to him. It was a fairly cold day out and even though Rapunzel said she wasn't cold, Eugene didn't want to risk her getting sick. Sitting in silence wasn't unusual for them. It was a way for them to escape reality even if it was just for a few minutes.
"Eugene, I think I just felt a kick." Rapunzel said breaking the silence. Eugene placed his hand over her stomach, waiting. Then, his face lit up. He felt it. He felt his baby kick. It was a surreal moment for him. He never thought he would be the type of guy to raise a family until he met Rapunzel. He smiled from ear to ear. Rapunzel put her hand over his. Eugene leaned down and kissed her. They broke apart and Rapunzel put her head on his shoulder.
"Eugene, what do want the baby to be?" she asked without looking up.
"It doesn't matter. I'll be happy with a boy or a girl."
"We should think of some names since it will be here in a few months."
"Has it been that long already? Feels like just yesterday you told me you were pregnant. And if we are going to discuss names, let's do it inside because it's cold out here." Eugene said. They got up and went inside. They spent the next hour discussing names. There were a lot of that they liked and it was hard to choose. That night, when the kingdom was asleep, Rapunzel and Eugene were on the sofa in the corner of their room. Rapunzel was laid across Eugene's lap. She was tired from the day but couldn't fall asleep. She stared at the ceiling and occasionally, at Eugene. He seemed to be half asleep, leaning on his hand.
"Eugene, if you want to go get in bed, you can." she said, sitting up.
"Only if you come with me." he said as he held her hand.
"I'll come with you but I probably wont be able to sleep."
"I just want you next to me so I know you're safe." he stood up and walked with Rapunzel to the bed.
"I love you, Rapunzel. Goodnight" Eugene said.
"I love you too." she said. Eugene fell asleep right after but it took a while for her to do so. Eventually, she managed to fall asleep.
