Today was the day. The day everything changed.
Fyodor had planned for his colleagues to scout out the area in the morning, make a start on things. Then in the late afternoon he would stroll in, write his plan into The Book and everything would be better, no love messing up his head, but more importantly, no pesky abilities. He had planned it this way, so he could spend one last day in his happy bubble. Dazai still hadn't mentioned The Book or the plans they both knew he had shared Fukuzawa and Fyodor was both glad and slightly annoyed that Dazai still didn't seem to care.
They spent the day cwtched up on the settee, Fyodor giving in to Dazai's every whim – chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and dinner, the endless strawberries. As Fyodor got closer to leaving Dazai was lying across the settee. Fyodor was massaging his bump as the babies were rather active, and Fyodor's touch was all that would calm them. They were both silent, lost in the moment
"Thank you" Fyodor whispered, "You proved to me that I can love, that I can have a lover and a family and everything. These almost five years have been the happiest of my life and I'm so proud of you, growing two babies must be so hard and yet you're doing it so well. I love you so much Osamu." Fyodor smiled, it was tinged with sadness. Dazai stayed silent, instead pulling Fyodor in for a kiss.
"I love you to."
"I need to grab something upstairs; I'll be back in a minute." Fyodor left the room, he returned five minutes later, in what Dazai called his Work outfit – white trousers and top, the cloak and hat that completed it were in the entryway.
"I'm sorry. My colleagues need me for…something. I'll be back in a few hours okay my love?" Fyodor placed a kiss on Dazai's forehead before leaving the room.
Dazai struggled to get up off the settee, his bump so big it got in the way and quietly followed Fyodor, he was still in the entryway, lacing his boots, he was facing the front door and didn't look back when he heard Dazai.
Dazai stopped at the foot of the stairs, hand on the railing to steady himself as the babies had started kicking again.
"Fedya please." It was almost a whisper, he had tears in his eyes. "Please stay."
Fyodor had turned to grab his cloak, his eyes locking with Dazai's as he clutched his bump and bent over, whimpering in pain. Fyodor dropped his cloak and rushed to Dazai's side.
"Are you okay?" he asked
"I…owwww" Dazai gripped onto Fyodor as his water broke.
"We need to get to the hospital. Stay here whilst I lock up the back door, can you get your shoes on?"
Dazai nodded, "It's too early, I'm so scared Fedya."
Fyodor pulled him closer, and placed a light kiss on his lips
"It's going to be fine, we'll be at the hospital soon."
They quickly left the house and got in the car. Both of them leaving their phones behind.
They got to the hospital quickly, hitting that perfect time after the schools had finished but before office workers were done for the day. The doctor saw to them, and briefed all the nurses that would be working with them on Fyodor's ability, his gloves forgotten in the rush.
Thirty-one hours later and their babies were born. Two little girls. They were a perfect mix of Dazai and Fyodor, both with Fyodor's bright violet eyes. At some point during Dazai's labour Fyodor had finally bonded with his omega, the ring of teeth bright on his neck.
"Well done my love. They're beautiful" Fyodor smiled, in awe of his little babies. The nurse had placed a chair next to the bed so Fyodor could be close to Dazai. The babies were on Dazai's chest, the two nurses giving them time to enjoy the moment.
"Do you want to hold them?" Dazai smiled
"What if I…? I need some gloves…"
"Bare skin Fedya, you can do it." Dazai paused, "Look, they've been alive minutes, yes, I'm already attached to them, but get it over with now. You can't be afraid of your own children for the rest of their lives."
Fyodor decided to skip over the fact his partner had just implied that if their babies died at Fyodor's hand it wasn't a big deal, deciding to blame the hormones and tiredness.
"Okay, I can do it." Fyodor took a deep breath as Dazai placed their first baby in his arms.
Nothing happened.
Spurred by his success Dazai placed their second baby in Fyodor's arms.
"They inherited No Longer Human, I thought I could feel it whenever you touched my bump, it's like my power was amplified by three, but I wasn't sure until I held them in my arms."
"My babies. Ohh they're so small and just perfect." He leant to kiss Dazai but they were interrupted by the door bursting open.
A group of armed men entered, pointing their guns at Dazai and Fyodor. Fyodor growled at them torn between protecting the babies in his arms or Dazai. Dazai whimpered, he felt vulnerable and very afraid. The nurses moved to block the armed men's view of them.
"Get out. You are violating the laws protecting this hospital." The first nurse told them
"That man is a wanted criminal, his group tried to pull off a terrible, terrib-"
"I don't care. His partner has had a very long labour, and mother, father and babies need time to rest and bond as a family."
"Excuse me." Ango's voice came from behind the armed men. They moved to let him in. "The nurse is correct. You were supposed to wait in the car park. You are dismissed and I will be reporting this to your superiors."
The men left without arguing.
"Sorry about that. There was an incident yesterday that Mr Dostoevsky was involved in." he paused taking in the scene – Fyodor still had both babies in his arms and a soft look on his face.
"When would I be able to come back to question him?" Ango asked
"It's 11pm now, the omega will need at least four hours rest, then there's the first feed. So, six, seven o'clock?"
"Perfect, thank you for your time, and once again I apologise for the men and the fear they've caused."
The nurse shut the door behind him. Within five minutes Dazai was fast asleep and Fyodor had helped the nurse put a nappy on both babies, and a plain vest. They were wrapped up in blankets, placed in plastic hospital crib, and joined Dazai in his sleep.
Two hours later and Dazai was awake again. Fyodor had changed from him white outfit and into jeans and a t-shirt. He was stood in front of the cribs, watching his little girls sleep, a big smile on his face. He jumped when Dazai wrapped his arms around him.
"Were they good whilst I slept Fedya?" he asked, voice quiet.
"They make such cute noises in their sleep. Also, shouldn't you still be asleep?"
"Hmm I've rested enough. I still feel a bit sore though"
"Yes, the babies did make you suffer, didn't they?"
"It was worth it, for our lovely little babies."
They lapsed into a silence, content with watching their babies sleep.
"When did you decide to stay?" Dazai whispered.
"My resolved started to crumble when we were on the settee, but looking back to you when you came out to stop me. It hit me that I was being stupid. If I got rid of ability users, I would lose my happiness. I never cared about the faceless ability users that would be lost. But willingly doing it to my lover, my babies, when you were standing there so vulnerable. I just couldn't do it." He paused, "Even if your water hadn't broken, I wouldn't have gone. I wanted to meet my babies, see what they'll grow into, who they'll take after. All the little things."
"I'm glad you stayed"
"Why did you never mention my plans? I know you knew about them"
"I wanted to live in our happily ever after, just for a few more days…. I was going to fight for the light, if I was going to lose my babies, my lover I wanted to at least feel like I did something to stop it. I told Fukuzawa about your plans, and Kunikida was going to pick me up after you left. I'm glad it didn't come to it, I was terrified of having to face you as enemies."
A few hours later Ango came in to discuss what had happened the day before. Left without a leader Fyodor's silver haired colleagues had crumbled. They were good with their abilities but not very good at thinking. They had given the book to Mori, thinking Fyodor had changed his disguise again. They were arrested seconds later and sent to the secure prison for ability uses. Ango was supposed to have arrested Fyodor as well, but seeing him with his babies in his arms, and realising he had skipped out on his own plan to take Dazai to the hospital, had changed his opinion of the man.
"So, Mr Dostoevsky, due to your change of heart concerning your own plan. The higher ups have decided to take a different route with your punishment. As you are now bonded to Dazai, and his ability nullifies your own, they have downgraded your threat level. The condition is that you will be on permanent house arrest. You will be allowed outside of course, we don't want to hinder your children's life. You will have the monitor implanted under the skin of your ankle, it will track your every movement, if you go to your old haunts you will be given an electric shock. We will monitor your everyday habits, and if you start to deviate excessively from it, we will be investigating and it will result in less freedom or prison. For now, you will have a temporary monitor, you need to be off your feet for a week after the implantation procedure and right now you need to focus on Dazai and the babies."
"Thank you, I honestly thought this was going to be my only day with my babies." Fyodor smiled, "Which ankle do you need?"
"The left one," Ango pulled a monitor from his briefcase and attached to Fyodor's ankle, "This one won't shock you, but will be used to map your habits." He paused, "You were both very lucky, please do not throwaway this chance."
"We won't, thank you Ango." Dazai smiled
"I'll be in touch to sort the permanent monitor" and with that, he left.
An hour later, the doctor was happy with Dazai's recovery and how he was feeding the babies and let them go home.
Dazai and Fyodor married two months later on their fifth anniversary, a small ceremony with just the two of them and their babies. They never had anymore children, content with their two little girls, they had inherited their parent's intelligence and cunning, so keeping up with them took all of Dazai and Fyodor's energy.
Dazai stayed home until their babies started school, not wanting to miss a second of their early childhood. Fyodor eagerly took on the role of stay at home Dad, he used the time their children were in school to start writing. He went on to publish many books (although Ango insisted on reading them first, in case they revealed information the public didn't need to see.)
Fyodor had never expected one simple decision to change his world, but he never regretted letting Dazai and love into his life.
A/N The book referenced at the start is 'Quicksand' by Tanizaki, It was picked purely because I've read it recently and really enjoyed it (& that cover is *gorgeous* and eye catching) You can also find me on Twitter/AO3 as Darke_Faerie
