The bell on the door gave a bright jingle, as a scowling, man with blue hair walked across the threshold of a quaint coffee shop. He dressed in a battle vest, white hoodie, black jeans, and converse. Hanging on his arm was a woman with green hair dressed in a leather jacket, white t-shirt, and black boots. The man scanned the shop. It was mostly empty today. The soft light from the lamps illuminated the wooden interior, casting the stairs that lead to the interior balcony in shadows. The pair made their way over to the counter which ran along nearly the entire west-side wall. Above the counter was a series of blackboards and book shelves covering the wall. The blackboards held the entire menu on them, followed by the occasional cute drawings added by the staff. The two ordered their coffee and took a seat on a red leather couch that was under the balcony. The man sighed as he gazed outside, the faint sound of rain pattering on the windows of the shop gave the shop a still, sacred silence.
"Nel, I gotta be honest with you," the blue haired man said quite exasperatedly as he leaned his head on her shoulder.
"About what, Grimmjow?" she asked as she put her head on top of his, eyes scanning the front of the store.
"I really fuckin' hate this."
"I know. I do too," Nel said as she took Grimmjow's hand. "We had our first date here."
"And the third one too since I was shit at thinking of stuff we could do.
"Grimmjow," cooed Nel as she kissed his head, "you're still not great at thinking of things to do on our dates."
"Jeez woman, take it easy. Can't you see I'm having a crisis 'cause my favorite coffee shop is closing down?"
"I know. This is tough for both of us" she said. The barista came over and brought their coffee, for Grimmjow; an espresso. For Nel; a cappuccino. Grimmjow gave an unusually calm smile and wave as the barista walked off.
"When did that guy start here?"
"I think it was around the time I broke up with you."
"Makes sense. I do remember seeing him a lot when I would come in after the late night shifts I picked up."
"You were so skinny when we met up again," Nel whispered as she took a sip of her cappuccino.
"And you looked radiant as usual," Grimmjow grumbled as he sipped his espresso.
"No need to sound so disappointed," Nel teased.
"Definitely made me realize I had to reset my life and priorities."
"You just liked to follow me on my morning run, and pretend bumping into me here was an accident," Nel said as she cuddled back into Grimmjow. He sighed and leaned back into the couch. For a few moments, the two were perfectly still with the exception of Grimmjow's hand gently running through Nel's emerald hair. Nel's hand gradually moved to a small scar on Grimmjow's face.
"I still can't believe Ichigo and you got into that nasty fight."
"He started it. I know I'm not exactly the most upstandin' lookin' guy, but thinking I was in the gang that hurt his friends definitely crossed the line."
"I had to take you both to the hospital," Nel said, lowering her voice. Her hand moved from his scar to embrace him. "I was so worried for the both of you."
"You made quite the nurse," he snarkily snapped as he stole a hiss.
"Grimmjow! We're in a public place!" Nel exclaimed.
"Says the woman draped over me like a blanket." Nel pouted, but relaxed back into Grimmjow's form.
"Do you want me to stop?"
"I think you know the answer to that," Grimmjow sighed, "But really, I am going to miss this place."
The barista walked up to the two lovers before clearing his throat and saying, "Sorry guys, I have to close up. Thank you for your patronage."
"Thanks kid," Grimmjow grumbled as he sat up. "Let's go Nel." She nodded as she stood up and took his arm again. The bell rang, and the two stared as the sign changed form "Open" to "Closed" for the last time.
"Let's go Grimmjow. We'll find a new place eventually," Nel whispered. Grimmjow nodded, kissed her, and the two made their way home.
