Last chapter! I might write an epilogue or this might serve as an epilogue, that depends on if I'm inspired to write one or not. You'll just have to check the status update on this story if you want to know.
I had so much inspiration when I started and I had this all planned out but then life happened, the virus happened, and I couldn't keep writing for a while because of it. That's why I lost all of my inspiration and this was such a slow story (in terms of updating) and I want to apologize for it. I didn't want to give up though and wanted to keep writing for you guys, it just wouldn't be as often as usual for me.
I hope you enjoy this last chapter!
The Palace felt like coming home, funnily enough. I walked inside the gates, my hand clasped tightly in Maxon's and all of the sudden, it was as if an everpresent weight was lifted off my shoulders. The man beside me noticed, I think because he squeezed my hand and pulled me along with him to where his bedroom was. Instead of walking in that door, he pulled me further along to the corridor leading to the Women's Room.
"Mother," He called outside of the door, "Do I have permission to come inside?"
"Of course, come in." She called, "I hope for your sake that America is with you. If not, you can turn right back around and go get her."
"I'm right here." I assured her as we walked in together.
In front of Queen Amberly were so many books and documents littered around. Some looked to be moodboards of sorts or at least visual representations of ideas. The binders that were opened were filled with locations and customs. The books were all on fl-
It was wedding stuff, all of it.
Amberly smiled at me, "Dear, I am not stupid, I know what my son and you were up to this morning. I want to make sure there is no surprise in the form of a child out of wedlock. Leave everything to me and you two will be married within the month and you won't have anything to worry about."
Her son mimicked her smile and winked at me, "I think that sounds good unless you want to plan it yourself."
I scoffed, "Lord no! I am very happy to let your mother do it, I think I'll enjoy it no matter what. I think I should focus on leaving my business behind, shifting everything to the others and start getting ready for my new role as Queen."
"That sounds like a good idea, dear." The Queen smiled, "I'm very proud of the two of you, you've done a lot in a very short time which shows me that you two will make an amazing King and Queen. I am very happy to be taking a step back for the two of you."
"Thanks Mom, that means a lot." He smiled before sitting down and pulling me to sit next to him, our legs touching fully and our fingers interlaced. "How did it go with Dad and Kriss?"
"Your father put up a large fight but he couldn't do anything about it when the guards stepped in. He's being escorted to the Island as we talk. As for Kriss, she's being escorted back home where she'll be punished for her deeds. She didn't go down quietly either but she should have, considering she confessed to sleeping with top politicians to get into the Selection."
"So she basically whored herself out to become a Queen she didn't want to become and to have a man she didn't want?" I patted the crown Prince's arm, "Sorry, babe, but it's the truth."
He kissed me cheek, "Darling, I don't care as long as you want me."
"No doubt." I assured him.
His smile widened impossibly and he pecked my lips, "I love you, America Singer."
"I love you too."
"I love you both as well but I want you out of here now so I can deal with all this. Why don't we get America's room ready? Perhaps prepare for your engagment anouncement?" She raised a brow, "I suggest you talk to the press as soon as possible."
"Of course mother."
That's how I found myself dressed up, standing next to Maxon to meet the reporters outside of the Palace on the front lawn. He had stepped up and taken the word, "Dear citizens of Illéa, dear reporters present, I stand before you today as a free man. A man free of his ex fiancé who has been proven to be anything but worthy of being your princess. A man free of the tyranny of his father, a man free to take care of his people in a way his predecessor did not. And I will take care of you."
He reached a hand back and took a hold of mine, softly tugging me forward so I was standing right next to him. "About a month ago, I approached America in hopes of ending my engagement with Kriss. At that moment, I had no idea of her infidelity or her past sins but I had seen her behavior towards you, our beloved citizens and realized that she wasn't Princess material. I realized I made a mistake and didn't want to continue any further with our agreement. I wasn't in love with her anymore but I was willing to put up with it, if she was fit to be your ruler one day."
"I agreed to help him after he told me the entire story but I needed special permission first because I knew I would be commiting treason if I were to break up a Royal Engagement. I didn't want to be hanged or whipped for helping a man break free so we got permission from his mother. Along with that, both Italy and New Asia offered me protection in case something were to go wrong. Thankfully I didn't need their help, but it was very useful to be in case of."
"America and I didn't do anything until we were sure that I was a free man. Our feelings awoke upon seeing each other but we didn't want to cause any difficulties in each others lives so we kept our meetings professional. However, last night everything changed when I was finally freed from Kriss Ambers. Despite our 'professional' relationship up until 20 hours ago, I proposed to America as soon as the news broke because I didn't want to miss another opportunity with her."
"I know the people of Illéa aren't overly fond of me at the moment, I know it seems that I've turned my back to my own nation and sought refugee in another country but that is not true. After the Selection, I thought it would be a better option to stay out of the limelight and tried to stay under the radar here in Illéa. I never thought people would see it as betrayal and that was definitely never my intention of hurting people. That is why I will prove to everyone that I am worthy of being your Queen and that I will stand by you."
"We are going to conclude this conference by saying that our wedding will be within the month, my mother is already in the process of planning everything and America will move in as of now. Her business will be handed over to the other people in her firm and she will take a step back out of the business world so she can focus solely on ruling this country and being your Queen." He bowed his head, "I am sorry for making the wrong choice a year ago but I hope you can forgive me and will accept us as your King and Queen."
