Call me when you want me, and I'll come running

A Percabeth Soulmate AU

o.0.o

Black and white.

Those are the colors Percy see's as he walks through the high school hallway's.

It was always like that. Percy walking alone through the crowded hallway, seeing no color at all.

He hadn't always been a loner. In his elementary years, he had Grover. But over the summer of 6th grade, he moved to Oregon. From Middle school, to the beginning of his senior year, he had a bunch of friends. Jason, Pipe's, Leo, and Rachel, but then he moved.

It sucked. Moving across the country a quarter way through senior year, that is.

But having your 'long lost' Father call you one evening saying that he 'wants' to 'meet' his 'little boy' is a once in a lifetime opportunity for him. Like, geeze Poseidon, he's 17.

But, he's at that stage of being the new kid that he's old news. Nobody really talked to him much, and he didn't feel the need to approach anybody.

Percy walks to his locker, grabbing his books and pens.

English is first, he thinks dreadfully. Just got to get through English.

English wasn't his...favorite subject. Percy already wasn't a very creative person, and his ADHD and Dyslexia didn't help.

All of a sudden, Percy feels a tap on his shoulder.

Fourth month in this school and this was the first time someone tapped his shoulder.

He turns to see a girl, head down with books in hand.

"Hello?" Percy asks nervously.

He didn't need to see color to know that this girl was pretty.

Her hair went down to her ribcage, curled like a princess's. From what he could see, she had circle glasses, jeans, and a long sweater.

"Hi," she said, keeping her eyes on her converse.

Percy knew this girl.

Annabeth Chase: the smart, beautiful girl he was partnered with for a project a few months ago.

Man, Percy wishes he could see color. He bets she's even more pretty with color.

Anyways, Percy is really excited to see Annabeth.

"Annabeth! I haven't seen you in a while."

(That's a lie. Percy sees her ever single day in biology and lunch.)

Annabeth tugs on her back-pack straps awkwardly. "Yeah?"

Percy wishes Annabeth would look up. He had never seen her eyes before. Not that is mattered.

He wouldn't be able to see what color they were anyway.

The little boy blows out the ten candles on the small blue cake.

His Mother smiles teary eyed, taking a picture.

"Make a wish!" She says.

He giggles. "I did mom."

The woman wipes her eyes. "Percy, my boy, double digits! Someone's growing to fast," she says.

Percy smiles proudly, but then he jumps out of his chair and onto Sally's lap.

"Mom! I'm old enough! Please, please, pretty please. Can you tell me about soulmates?!" He exclaims.

Sally laughs at her sons enthusiasm. "Of course honey."

On all children's tenth birthdays, they get to learn about soulmates.

Percy jumps up and down lightly with excitement, and Sally sighs.

"Well," she starts, "everyone is born, not able to see color." A wistful, sad smile graces the woman's face.

"Color is a magnificent thing. So bright and full of life," She says.

Percy leans forward.

"And one day ,if your lucky, you'll meet a person that can give that to you."

Sally starts to tear up again.

"You'll look into their eyes, and all of a sudden, it hits you like a brick. You'll be surrounded by one color."

"The color of their eyes?" Percy guesses with a smile.

Sally nods.

"And moments later, it will pass and you'll see all kinds of colors. Blue, Red, Green, Yellow-"

"That's a lot," Percy interrupts thoughtfully.

"That's only a few of them."

Percy smiles as his Mom continues to tell him all kinds of stories about what it's like meeting you're soulmate and all the different colors.

Percy goes to bed happy that night.

I can't wait to meet my soulmate.

"So..."

Percy clears his throat, coming out of his flashback.

"Yeah, sorry. How are you?"

He didn't really know what to say, and "What are you doing here," didn't sound very friendly.

"Um, I had to move lockers and Mr. Brunner said you probably wouldn't mind it if I buddied up with you. If that's okay with you of course. I wouldn't just march in here and...claim land."

Percy laughs. "I'd be happy to share my locker with you, Annabeth."

"Okay."

He moves his things around as quickly as he can so that he is only taking up a small space of the locker.

"Thanks," Annabeth says and bounces on the ball's of her feet, obviously waiting for Percy to leave before she settled into the locker.

"Bye!"

"Bye," Annabeth says giving a small wave.

And so Percy's journey to dreaded English begins.

(But he's smiling because he swore he saw Annabeths lips curve into a cute little dimple smile when she waved him off.)

Annabeth, unlike Percy, did see color.

Well, she hasn't always been able too. Just for the last few months.

She saw her soulmate.

She decided not to tell anyone.

Annabeth didn't have a little bonding moment with her Mom when she learned about soulmates. Nope, her Dad just sat her down and told she's going to meet a person, and they'll make her happy. Then, they'll either leave you, or die. You won't be happy, and you'll be color blind again.

Then, he locked her out of his study.

Annabeth remembers the day she saw color for the first time, like it was yesterday.

"I'll be assigning Partners, based on compatibility."

Groans fill the classroom.

The teacher continues. "The chart with the partners I listed is placed on my desk. Please remember, if you choose to use a visual representation, meme's will not be tolerated. Your grade will immediately drop."

The teens scatter, slowly making their way to the teachers desk and looking at the list.

Annabeth though, doesn't bother. If she gets a nice partner, they'll come to her. If she doesn't, she will gladly do the assignment herself.

Suddenly, a scratching sound is heard from behind Annabeth.

She moves her eyes over, to find a pair of legs standing behind her.

She look's up to see none other than the new kid, Percy Jackson, scratching the back of his neck, eyes avoiding her.

"Hi I'm-"

Without warning, Annabeth is hit by a force. Like a mental semi-Truck hitting her brain, and she can't see anything but-

Oh my Gods.

Annabeth remembers when her cousin Will explained what it was like when he met his soulmate Nico, and Annabeth realizes what is going on.

All she can see is one...color. Of course, at the time she had no clue what it was at the time, but now she knows that it was sea green.

Maybe even a little blue.

Then, the force dissipates and she call see all the color's. Orangs, Pink, Blue, Yellow, Purple, Maroon, Periwinkle, brown, Chartreuse-

Annabeth looks back up to Percy, who seemed to be oblivious to all that just happened.

"And you're...Annabeth, right?"

She nods, but keeps her head down.

She doesn't want Percy to find out she's his 'soulmate'. The system obviously doesn't work and nobody can actually love her. Enough people in her life already made that clear. She didn't need to get her hopes up with this boy only to have him loose interest in her after a few years.

Just like her parents.

It would be like a new Pair of shoe's, or a new favorite song. Its nice in the moment, but then it gets old. The glow, spark, or magic is gone and they are thrown aside.

It wouldn't work out, and she doesn't need any more disappointment. she'll keep her head down.

The day went by and Percy and Annabeth only run into each other a few times.

Of course, Percy had tried for a conversation, multiple times. But Annabeth always answered 'Yes,' 'No,' or 'Thanks,' so he wasn't really getting anywhere.

And she quite always had her head down.

Why? Percy knew it wasn't his buisness, but he was actually getting pretty worried.

Annabeth raised her head other times, but not around him.

Did he make her uncomfortable? Did she really like her shoes? Was she always counting the tiles on the floor? Neck problems?

Percy sighs, closes their locker, and heads out of the school.

o.0.o

After a few weeks, Percy's had enough.

He likes Annabeth, and he want's to be friends with her, but she won't budge. He may be oblivious, but Percy wasn't stupid. He knew something was up.

It's not like Annabeth always had her head down. When she was with Thalia, Reyna, or one of her other friends, Annabeth had her head raised high. Pridefully almost.

But when Percy was around she hid behind herself.

Why? What had he done?

"Hi Annabeth."

Week 3 1/2 of the two teens sharing a locker, and Percy watches as Annabeth quickly grabs her textbooks, binder, and back-pack.

"hi," She says as she tries to turn and hobble away.

Percy winces as he watches Annabeth struggle to carry all of her things while still keeping her head down and avoiding him.

Annabeth needed help. So, he does what any good gentleman would.

"Here, let me help," He says shutting their locker and taking the textbooks from Annabeth's hands.

"Oh really I'm-" She sighs, and grips hold of her binder. "Thanks."

Percy nods, smiling. "Anytime."

Then Annabeth does something that she might regret for the rest of her life, or she might not.

She looks up.

BOOM!

Percy doesn't even have time to comprehend what is happening before he's hit with a load of force.

It was exactly like his Mother had said.

'You'll look into their eyes, and all of a sudden it hits you like a brick. You'll be surrounded by one color.'

Except the color was...grey.

He knew it was grey because all he's seen his whole life was grey. But this grey, it was different.

Normally, grey was dull, but this color was full of life. It was Black and silver at the same time. It was...different.

Then, it left and Percy was left with the overwhelming sight of color.

Under other circumstances, Percy would have been practically jumping up and down with joy, but there was one problem.

Annabeth was gone.

o.0.o

Crap, crap, crap, crap.

Annabeth Chase had messed up big time.

It's not like she got 'lost in the moment', or whatever. There was no moment. Literally all he did was help her and she just...looked up.

Annabeth had ran immediately once she saw Percy black out for a few moments. She knew what happened.

He knew.

Annabeth knew Percy wasn't a bad guy. Sweet, stupid, smart, gorgeou-

Ehhem.

yeah, he was okay.

She got through the first part of the school day succeeding in the art of avoiding Percy, and now she was sitting at the base of a large oak tree, eating her lunch. And she swears to the Gods if anyone even looks at her she might blow. Like, really blow.

Annabeth knew other people might probably think she was a complete idiot. Here she was, a young girl who found her soulmate, who's a legitimately nice and good human being, and she's pushing him away.

Well maybe if soulmate's actually made sense...

Who even chooses who's good for each other? Some computer? Your brain? Some God? Who would want to spend their lives wasting away...shipping people for a living? I mean, who really?

Annabeth bangs her head on the oak, then winces, rubbing her forehead.

"Dumb idiot Jackson."

"I get that a lot."

Annabeth mentally palm smacks herself and turns to the voice, already knowing who it was.

"Can I help you?" Annabeth asks the boy, not even bothering to hide her eyes.

Percy frowns at her. "Your fore head looks hurt," he says, actually concerned. Annabeth rolls her eyes. "Tree," she says pointing to the huge tree that she is literally leaning on.

She and Percy hadn't really said much to each other. Annabeth always made sure of that, but...she didn't really now how she felt now. She didn't really know if she should shut him out or let him in.

Percy sits down to Annabeth, leaning against the tree.

They sit like that for a couple minutes, in silence. But it wasn't uncomfortable, it was...a comfortable silence. They didn't really need to talk, both of them already understood what was to be talked about.

Percy breaks the silence. "When did you find out?"

Annabeth sighs. She knew she couldn't keep this a secret forever, but she sure as Hades hoped she could.

"Biology. The first day of the project," Annabeth says staring out over the school. Percy looks at her for a few seconds more, before looking over the campus aswell.

"If...if you don't mind me asking...why didn't you tell me?"

Annabeth shifts, "Well, I guess the whole 'soulmate' thing doesn't make sense to me," she says. Percy doesn't say anything, and she takes that as a sign to continue. "Yeah, it's a nice idea...but does it really work? What if theres...some sort of glitch in the system or something? What if..."

She trails off.

"Not all soulmates work out Percy," she says solemnly, looking over too him with a slight sympathetic expression. Percy looks confused, but Annabeth can see he's starting to catch on.

"Oh."

Suddenly, Annabeth feels terrible. Here she was, telling her soulmate who's been looking for his soulmate for years, that they might not 'work out'. And that she didn't want to even give them a chance.

Percy turns his body against the tree so he's facing Annabeth.

"Your Parents..."

Annabeth nods quickly.

A look of realization coats Percy's face and frowns. "I'm so sorry Annabeth."

She looks at him. "Percy, they were soulmates. They gave each other color and they were bonded. But...they- they just...quit."

Annabeth takes a deep breath and continues. "Soulmates can break by distance, Percy. Not physical distance, but emotional distance. They just grew apart, they couldn't see color anymore, then my Mom left."

The two sit in silence until the lunch bell rings and it's time to go back to class.

Annabeth and Percy get up.

"Look Percy, I'm really sorry that I-"

Annabeth is interrupted by a large hug.

She just stands there at first, but after a few seconds, Annabeth wraps her arms tightly around Percy.

Percy smiles, pulls away, and stands up.

After walking a few feet, he looks back at Annabeth.

"I'll be here...when you're ready."

Percy doesn't know whether to feel happy, or depressed.

He knows why Annabeth acted so oddly around him!...it was because of him. He could see color! He met his soulmate! Annabeth was his soulmate! Annabeth was very pretty in color!...Annabeth didn't like soulmates.

Well, she didn't not like it, but she felt doubtful. And, Percy fully understood and he wasn't mad at all. Her Parents were soulmates and they didn't work out, it totally makes absolute sense that she had her doubts.

And, Percy really, really likes Annabeth, he's willing to wait for her. Until she's ready to try. And if she never is, he still wants to be friends with her. If, she's comfortable with that.

He doesn't quite know if it's love yet. He knows it was somewhere near there, but not quite yet.

It won't take long for him to get there though.

o.0.o

Time goes by.

Annabeth and Percy become pretty close friends, and even though both of them think about it regularly, the soulmate issue in never brought up. She get's accepted to Stanford and Percy to NYU. By the time graduation comes around, Percy and Annabeth are ready to get the heck out of high school.

"Annabeth Chase graduating as class Valedictorian!"

The crowd claps as Annabeth walks out onto the stage, tugging at her floppy cap. She can clearly see Percy laughing at her from the stands, but but she didn't know was that he was also smiling proudly at her.

She waves, bows, and walks on. Lucky for her, she wasn't told to write a speech.

The night goes on and Annabeth practically skips out of the door that evening.

Annabeth isn't quite so happy when she has a flight to catch two months later.

Percy hands her her suitcases. "Good luck Annie."

Annabeth smacks him, rolling her eyes, but both of the teens become serious.

"I'm really going to miss you Annabeth," Percy said sadly.

Annabeth smiles. "Were still in the same state, Seaweed Brain."

Percy pouts and whines, "But we'll be 2,561 miles apart! And I wont be able to see you until...summer!"

Annabeth pats his shoulder, smirking. "I'm sorry bud. It must be so hard having to deal with that pain."

"You're so, very mean Wise Girl."

The two hug again. "No, but seriously, I'm going to miss you like crazy."

Percy nods and holds her tighter.

"So will I."

They stay like that until they are interrupted by an annoying Woman's voice, telling them Annabeth had to go.

"Passengers for flight 312 to Stanford California please meet at the departing gate."

Percy says some rather nasty things under her breath about the flight attendant Woman.

Annabeth laughs, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hands. "I got to go Perce." She says pulling away from Percy.

Percy grabs her hands. "Please don't say goodbye just...see ya later?

She smiles sadly.

"See ya later Seaweed Brain."

o.0.o

Normally, Annabeth hated the December weather in New York.

She never liked Snow, she liked spring when everything was neutral and all the plants were bright...but right now, the cold wasn't what was on her mind.

During her months away from Percy, she got time to think.

Yeah, now she really felt like an idiot.

He was her soulmate. He was an idiot, but he was her soulmate and...she loved him.

Yeah, that's right. Be surprised.

So here she was, leaving one of the best schools in the country, to tell her soulmate she loved him.

Maybe she was being rational, but she didn't give a crap.

Annabeth parks her car and tugs on her coat. She looks at the apartment building, smiling.

'I'm coming Perce.'

She runs inside, not caring about all the skeptical looks she's getting. She runs to the elevator, pushing in the buttons. She already knew which door was Percy's. She'd been the one to help him pick it out.

The elevator ride seemed centuries long, and when it ended Annabeth scrambled to the door of Percy's apartment.

She stares at it for a while, then she knocks.

The door cracks open, and a voice speaks.

"Dude, I already said I didn't wanna by anything from you I'm sorry-"

"I'm ready."

She is. She's done being scared of the idea of someone living her, just because her parents didn't work out in the end. She's ready to gove it a try, because she loves Percy and want's to let him love her.

It takes Percy all of 2 seconds to realize it was Annabeth and he lunges at her. "Annabeth!"

Moments later, it catches onto him. He pulls away from the embrace. "Did you just say-"

"I'm ready."

Percy looks down at her, eyebrows scrunched together.

"Are you sure? I totally get it if you're not. I don't want you to feel like you have to-"

Annabeth interrupts Percy, grabbing onto his shoulders and kissing him.

"I love you Percy."

He smiles, the uncertainty on his face gone.

"I love you to Wise Girl."

Yeah, whoever shipped them? Absolute geniuses.
