Chapter 2 A quest for a Gunslinger!
I opened my eyes to a dark room. Huh, there was this familiar feeling, like déjà vu. Before me was a woman with silver hair seated on a throne of pure white. No, she seemed to have an aura like the angels, but it seemed to be stronger.
"Kato Fujiwara-san, I am the goddess Eris. Normally my job is to guide adventurers who have died fighting monsters to their chosen afterlife but because of Aqua-senpai's current… preoccupation she could not use all her power to bring you to this world."
Okay, I remember both their names from before. So, the woman before me was what did the angels say, my guide? Well I should ask some questions then, since this does not seem to be a common thing even for hero candidates.
"Why am I a special case according to what the angels said?"
"As the law of the heavens needs a god or goddess to properly guide souls to their destination, but to be honest...hmm how should I put this? We weren't expecting any souls from Japan to show up after Aqua-senpai had to leave her post, which was why I helped out."
"I remember the angels saying that I was one of the hero candidates, are there other heroes from my world as well?" In fact, why was a 14-year-old like me a hero candidate? Shouldn't they choose someone older and more experienced?
"Well there have been many such candidates for a while, but I usually meet them went they die. Of the current living ones I have only heard of them, well I guess there is one guy who came here recently. Satou Kazuma-san, he is an adventurer who despite how he acts has good character so he probably would help you out."
Ah great, if he came to this world recently then he should be somewhere near Axel, right? Maybe I can ask him for advice on how to be an adventurer. There was one more question I wanted to ask though.
"Why was I chosen to be a gunslinger? Don't I get a choice in what I want to do in this world?"
"Erm, I don't really have much control in the choosing what is given to hero candidates. We had one of Senpai's angels delve into what makes you as person, so we considered your family, your hobbies and what you like."
Well I do play shooters with other friends but really? I hate it when anyone goes double pistols when they can choose other way better weapon loadouts, so why was I given that? Family? I recall something about Dad's side having an ancestor who used tanegashima (matchlocks) during the Warring States period and wasn't great-grandfather a sniper who died at Khalkhin Gol?
"I don't like dual-wielding pistols though. Why did you all choose to give me that instead of something more useful like a rifle or shotgun?" I had to ask.
"I don't know what's the difference between all the things you said but the angels told me that they were only able to copy and make your equipment because it was simple enough for you to use safely. Afterall, they could only rely on what Senpai recorded about your world. Anyway, it is almost time for you to wake up. I will try to watch over you in the world, but I have my tasks to do as well and cannot protect you all the time."
As she finished that sentence, I suddenly saw a golden glow around me.
"I have blessed you with some of my luck, after all I am the Goddess of Fortune. Stay safe and do not die, Kato Fujiwara."
In the stable
As I woke up from that weird dream, I looked down at myself. No golden glow, hmm that was strange. Well, best prepare for the day and start making money for myself. I had read part of the guild's board yesterday and there were many quests with various rewards and requirements. Some seemed to have a level of danger so I should check my equipment if I want to take on these quests. I opened one of the holsters and took out the pistol within. I recognised it as a M9 Beretta, a popular pistol found in many video games. I had two extra magazines in my bag, not counting those already loaded into the guns, meaning I had a total of 60 rounds and no way to get more. Looking at the skill card the counter lady gave me yesterday, I remembered reading that at level one I only had the Gun skill, which allowed me to use guns with various buffs while giving me a debuff on using non-gun related weapons. Hmm, my luck stat seemed to have changed. Was the dream with the goddess Eris real? Ah well not that it matters right now, I have to find a way to make money, so off to the guild I go.
At the guild
The guild was bustling with people, just like yesterday. Making my way to the bulletin board, I read some of the bounties. There were also notices for people looking to party up so I should keep my eyes open on that as well.
'A 'One-hit Bear' has appeared near the farms. 2200000 to kill it, 550000 to drive it away'
'Looking for a teacher for Intermediate Magic. 50000 per lesson. Mage class only'
The first quest seemed too risky for me and I obviously did not qualify for the second.
'Recruiting party members. Hopefully, someone who doesn't mind when the conversation stalls. Someone who wouldn't avoid me… Someone who won't get angry… No restrictions on job and age.'
'Giant toads have reappeared near the forest, defeat 10 giant toads in 4 days. Additional bounty of 200000'
The recruitment notice had a bunch of words blacked out, but the lack of job and age restrictions seemed interesting. The quest also seemed to be alright, killing that many enemies should level me up and hopefully allow me to unlock useful skills. With that, I headed towards the counter where that lady from yesterday was waiting.
"Hello, Kato Fujiwara-san, right? Are you here for a quest?"
"Yes, uh Counter lady Onee san, I would like to take on the Giant Toad quest." Her face transformed quickly, first into a smile then a look of concern.
"You can call me Luna Onee san if you want to. As for the quest, we require all low-level adventurers that take on eradication quests to have at least one other party member, but you seem to have come alone…" As if on cue, a blonde man with red eyes came over.
"Luna helping out any rookie that calls her young, ha-ha. Any quests for a veteran adventurer like me? I have some expenses to pay so let me do some quests!" The blonde adventurer laughed.
"Oh, Dust-san. How rare for you to actively look for quests. Maybe it has to do with the money you owe for those meals. How about this, if you are looking for an easy quest to pay your debt, help out this gunslinger here."
"Eh, killing monsters like giant toads isn't really profitable you know, they are way too troublesome for such little bonus. How are you going to split the reward?" Dust asked me.
"I wanted to kill all 10 toads myself but if I need to have a companion then can you help guard me if my attacks fail? I will give you half of the bounty regardless of how many toads you kill."
"Eh, no that's not good. How about this, you treat me to a meal and a drink after our quests and you give me a … quarter of the reward. What do you think I am so despicable as to bully a rookie?" Dust changed his tone after seeing Luna glare at him.
"Hmph, your character is well known throughout Axel but fine… Kato Fujiwara-san if you accept Dust-san's proposal then the guild can approve of your quest. Dust-san can guide you on how to notify the guild after you have killed the toads to claim the bounty."
"Ah yes I accept! Thank you, Luna Onee san!" I was finally going to test out my abilities on the monsters of this world!
