There was a cat sanctuary a 20 minute drive away from the hospital. When they arrived, Will's friend greeted them warmly, and introduced himself as Matthew. He then led them inside.
"Would you like a kitten or a cat?" He asked. "We have cats that have been abandoned, but also we have some cats of our own- and there was a litter born 3 months ago, and they will need homes too. Would you like to see those ones?"
They both nodded. "Yes please,"
They were led through to a room where there were two kittens asleep in a basket, and two running around trying to wake the others up.
"Have they got names?" Will asked.
His friend shook his head. "We haven't named them yet- if we have to end up keeping some we will have to name them though. There are 3 boys and 1 girl- there were 2 girls but one was sold a week ago."
One of the ones that was awake was light grey with black stripes on it, and white paws. It ran up to Fenisha and Will, sniffing at their legs. She laughed.
"This one likes you," Matthew commented.
She knelt down next to it. The tiny kitten pitted happily when she stroked it.
"Is it a boy or a girl?" She asked.
"The two running around are boys. This one is very adventurous. You live in a flat, right?"
"Yeah," Will nodded. "It's a ground floor apartment though, so if we get him he will be able to go outside."
"We could get two so they have company...?" Fenisha said to Will, looking up at him longingly.
Will sighed. There was no way he would be able to resist her.
"They're both good as gold, they've never clawed at furniture. Also they're litter trained, so you'll just need to get them a litter box." Matthew added.
"Well I guess we know who we're getting then," he said. His girlfriend grinned and hugged him.
Matthew had given them two boxes to take them home in, as well as a list of essentials to get them, like food, a basket and toys. On the way home, they stopped off at a Pets at Home to get things. Fenisha stayed in the car with the cats, while Will went into the shop.
When he walked in, there was so much stuff it was almost unbelievable. He was very glad that he had left Fenisha in the car- if she had come in he would probably have a massive bill at the end of the month.
He grabbed a trolley and went around the shop, looking at the list Matthew had given him. He bought a fluffy basket that they could sleep in, and a big bag of food, along with food bowls and water bowls. He also picked up two collars for them- they couldn't go outside yet, as they hadn't had their vaccinations, but they would need them for later.
He also picked up a litter tray for them, and two medium-sized pet carriers. They had been told that the kittens' parents were both small cats, so they weren't going to grow massive, but he wanted the stuff to last.
Finally, he picked up some toys, including some balls and a scratching post.
When they arrived home, they let the kittens run around for a bit and get used to the flat, while they sorted out where to put their baskets.
"What are we going to name them, then," Will asked.
They looked at the two kittens. One was grey with a black patch on his eye and on the end of his tail.
"That one has got to be called Pirate," Fenisha commented. Will nodded in agreement.
"And the other one..." she looked at the little grey and black kitten.
"Tiger."
"He doesn't look like a tiger," Will Protested.
"So?"
Will sighed.
"Well then, Tiger and Pirate, welcome to your new home."
Will's friend had been right- though adventurous, the cats were very good. Pirate was not quite as adventurous as Tiger though- the latter had climbed up Will's bookshelf but got scared to come down.
At 9pm, they had decided it was time to go to sleep, so they had snuggled down next to each other in their basket.
The next day, Will woke up with a kitten on his head. At some point in the night, or maybe in the morning, the kittens had woken up and decided to come and sleep with them. His girlfriend was still fast asleep next to him, with Tiger gently head butting her arm.
The sun had already risen- but seeing as it was June, it rose before 5am every day. The alarm clock next to him read 6:37- just one and a half hours before their shifts started.
Yawning, Will rolled over and gently shook Fenisha awake. She rolled over.
"What time is it?" She mumbled sleepily.
""6:37," he replied.
"Better get up then."
They didn't want to leave the kittens alone for the whole length of their shifts, but luckily one of Will's retired neighbours who used to have cats would look after them. After giving them some food, and then handing over their basket, some toys, and their litter tray, they thanked him and left for work.
After the next chapter I'm just going to skip to the birth scene- which is likely to be very bad as I have only ever seen someone give birth on a video I watched in year 7 :)
