Sorry for the delay in getting this chapter up I rewrote the first part of this chapter about twenty times before I was finally happy enough with it to put it up
The Chief, Mike and Kate talk for a little while longer before he leaves to allow them to rest, knowing they both have been through alot over the last few months.
Following Morning
NAVCOM
The Chief of Navy, and Steve speak to the Captain of the Cairns Army base about what happened with Hammersley they show him the reports from Dutchy, Swain as well as Mike, the reports aren't showing about what Mike and Kate were really doing, then two people from the SIS turn up for the meeting as well, and then he learns more about what has been going on. None of them know of what Jim is going to bring or say let alone do when he turns up for his meeting.
Jim arrives 15mins late for his meeting which doesn't sit well with all of those inside Marshall's office. As he hasn't rung to say he would be late.
"Captain what are your reasons for being late to this meeting?" Comes from Jim's commanding officer. He decides to not introduce the other two people in the room to Jim, deciding to see where things go and lead with this meeting.
"Traffic Sir." Jim is rather surprised to see his CO in this meeting.
"And you didn't ring through why?"
"I was driving." is his reply, his own CO is not at all happy with this answer, as he knows full well Jim's car has an inbuilt handsfree system. Jim's CO reckons he is bullshitting right now.
"Why are you here Sir? I wasn't informed that this meeting involved you as well."
"I am here due to the nature of your last mission and the events that happened during it."
"That mission is classified Sir, and as far as I am aware you were not part of those sworn in for the mission and its details."
"That is where you are wrong Captain. I know more than you realise about what has been going on, and any mission you work on I know the details of before you do as I hand pick which team does what missions.. What myself and everyone else here wants to know first is what the hell was your team thinking when you left two seriously injured people on the ground without providing any help?"
"We weren't sure it was safe to help them, plus my team was told not to touch them."
"That is very different to the reports we received." One of the SIS people says in reply, Jim has no idea who these people are or why they are in this meeting.
"And what did those reports tell you? Did they tell you that two navy officers were with a known criminal, and they seem very comfortable and familiar with him?"
"No the reports stated that your team, stood there, when one of the wounded moaned when trying to do as instructed, and her husband came to her aid you told him not to move or you would shot him, you offered to have someone look at her but not the other injured person, and he refused to allow your team to touch her, but asked you to look at the other injured person. Then you and your team just stood there and did nothing, and then when the team from Hammersley arrived you still just stood there providing no help at all to any of them." Comes from Jim's own CO.
"I would like to know why you didn't go and help the other injured person? Why did you guys just stand there? Just because one of them is a known criminal doesn't mean a thing, you are meant to provide first aid to any injured person while on a mission regardless of if they are the person you are after or one of your own team members, or an incident person, caught in the crossfire." Comes from Steve.
"The situation wasn't safe for providing any help at that time, I needed to make sure my men would be safe if they got down at their level, it was easier to stay standing and guarding than to provide help. Standing allows my team to move, getting at ground level prohibits us to move in a hurry to get cover." Comes from Jim to those in the room.
"Captain you and I know that is a load of bullshit." Comes from his CO, and this throws Jim hearing his CO swear at him over this. He knows there is far more going on here than what Jim is saying.
"What about what you said to one of the officers onboard Hammersley the night before, informing him that he doesn't know who Mike and Kate really are and that he couldn't say a word about what happened out there."
"Because he doesn't know who they really are, none of you guys do, this mission is classified and that person does not have the classification to know the full story of what my mission is." He says to them as he then gets the photos he brought with him out of the bag he has with him.
"These photos I have here say that they are apart of this cell, I have been chasing this cell for the last five months, and the more information I get the more it informs me that they are not who we think they are, you do all realise that there is nothing before they suddenly appeared fifteen years ago, before then there is no information about where they went to school, where they were born, their parents nothing, there isn't any information under both surnames that I was able to get given." He then places down more documents on to the table in the office, and the SIS starts going through them. Jim notices only the two people in suits go through what is placed on the table. The room is silent for what feels like hours but is only five minutes.
"Where did you get all this information form?" Comes from one of the guys.
"That is classified I'm sorry."
"Either tell us or you will be arrested." They say again to Jim and he says nothing at all in response to them.
"You can't arrest me. I have organised protection for the person that is called Kate, I know her as Lieutenant Kate McGregor, and I need to get going so I can go and get her into protection."
"You won't be going anywhere Captain."
"Sorry but I will be, I lined this up yesterday she needs to get into protected custody so that we can make sure she gives the correct information for the case against my target, she is also my fiance so in the end I get the final say in what happens to her. We need to keep her statement as true as possible to the facts of what has been going on, and away from anyone who could threaten her into giving false details."
"That is none of your business re statements for the case ahead, and as of 4pm yesterday the case was dropped." says one of the SIS guys
"What the hell, my men have been badly injured. I even lost one to this case and suddenly it has been dropped. You guys will believe any of the bullshit out of Mike's mouth these days. When will you wake up to the fact he isn't Mighty Mike Flynn, that he is also a criminal like my target. He is just wanting to keep my fiance away from me." What Jim says starts to piss off those inside the office. As Jim is talking the Chief is pulling out copies of paperwork to give to Jim.
"Captain this paperwork here says you are not her fiance at all, and that in fact she never said yes to you after you asked her." He passes the documents over to Jim to go over. Who goes through them and is stunned when he finds another document. And the emails Kate sent to Mike explaining what was going on and then there is a copy of the email that she send him.
"This is a load of bullshit, there is no way in hell she is married to Mike, no way in hell." He says back to them. "And these emails are fake from her to Mike, he has made them up to get his way with her." he says to them.
"They are not fake. I spoke to Kate last night and she has informed me that she in no uncertain terms wants to see you right now. Now Jim we need to know where and who got all this information for you."
"That is my business not yours." he snaps back.
"Captain Jim Roth you are under arrest, under section 43b of the Australian Secrets Intelligence Services act, we are arresting you on the act of obtaining sealed and classified information, that is above your ranking, of those who work for the SIS." Jim is shocked by what he is hearing from these people. He is even more stunned when his own CO does nothing to stop them. And that these guys are SIS
"You caused this yourself Jim, the Army will not be providing you with a lawyer you will need to sort that one out yourself. After reading everything on record and the information given to me from the SIS, there is no way we will support you. And by the way the Bosun on Hammersley has higher clearance than you do and does know full what has been going on. Threatening him was not a wise move."
The phone rings in the office, and Steve picks it up. He speaks on it for about five minutes before hanging up.
"Gary has been declared brain dead, his life support is being turned off shortly." Steve tells them before they take Jim out.
"Captain we will also be charging you with the murder of Gary Mill Johnson, you and your teams actions lead to his death." They leave with Jim and those inside NAVCOM are shocked at what they are seeing. The three left in the office talk some more. The Army Captain is shocked by the way Jim was acting as in all his time of knowing Jim he has been a brilliant officer for them. And now he is seeing another side of Jim, a jealous side of Jim he thinks more than anything.
Jim is taken to a secure location, where the SIS interview him more, during this interview he finds out that Mike and Kate have been apart of the same mission as him, cause of the photos he has and how he started talking and giving them who he got the information from, he finds out that Mike and Kate for the last fifteen years have been working on this mission, and that their part of the mission was to get as close as they could to the target, and they did their job and they been doing it for fifteen years. He couldn't believe that the two had known each other that long, he thought they had only known each other for as long as Kate had been on Hammersley, that now being five years, he thought their love for each other was because they worked so closely together onboard, and that is why the rules were there not, because they had in fact being loving each other for this long. The SIS confirmed with Jim that they two are married and it is real. The more Jim studies the photos with this new information the more he sees two people in love, two people who should be together. IT makes him rethink what he felt for her and how he has been acting.
By the time they finish talking with him five hours after bringing him to the location, he is still being charged but the chargers have changed. The person Jim had been getting the information from was a person who used to work for the SIS, they knew this person had gone onto working for the government to help provide more details. When Jim provided them with the person's name, they do know he never gave the full details of Mike and KAte to Jim as in the fact they are working for SIS in some of those photos. They are going to talk to this person some more as well to see if they have been providing information to anyone else that shouldn't have had it.
Hospital
Mike and Kate both had a rough night with being woken up for ob's during the night, For Mike he wasn't in to much pain but he just wanted to be able to touch Kate, for Kate pain was a problem, she be ok then have sharp horrible spasms, her whole body just ached she couldn't move much as when she did try and move more than her head and arms, she would feel her wounds including where she had her incision.
In the morning the doctor went over their injuries, Kate was shocked by the extent of her injuries but also the fact that she coded several times. The doctor allowed Mike to get up out of bed if he wanted but he too was on bed rest, the doctor also allowed for the beds to be moved closer together so the two could at least be beside each other more. He also said Mike could go home in a few days, Kate was told she would be staying in hospital for at least two weeks. They weren't going to let her go home until they were sure her wounds were healing up and that her surgery site had healed up. They were worried about complications, plus they knew she was in pain just by the meds that had been charted during the night to help her with the pain she was getting.
Steve turns up later in the afternoon and lets them know that Gary was declared brain dead and his life support had been turned off, he can tell both Mike and Kate feel sad about what has happened, he also tells them about the meeting he had with Jim, and how the SIS had arrested him for the part's he had played in what has now become one fatality, though no one knows who's bullet hit who that night, but they do know the delay in treating him hasn't helped in him now being brain dead. Kate couldn't believe that JIm was going to take her away and put her someone safe, and that he refused to accept her marriage to Mike. Mike asks Steve if it was ok to ring his parents to let them know what has happened. Steve tells him to go for it, but not to give them too much details, he said he will spin something to them, but he knows for not only him but also Kate to get home he is going to need his parents help back at home.
