November 20th
(Just presume it is 39 weeks)
It was the end of a freezing day when she felt it. It had been clear the night before, but then heavy, grey clouds had come in the morning, making it both freezing cold and icy. Now the sky had cleared, and the stars were frosty pinpricks against the night. Will had a shift that started at 1pm; it was now 10:30. He wouldn't be home for ages- and had told her to go to sleep before he got home.
It was a sharp rippling across her lower abdomen, which made her gasp and grab onto the table. Definitely a contraction. Biting her lip, she wondered what to do. Should she call Will? But then again, most early contractions are about 20 minutes apart. She would call him when her waters broke.
The next one came 25 minutes later- a bit stronger, but still bearable. Glaring at the cats, who were just sitting on a shelf watching her, she felt a strange sensation- her waters had broken. Swearing quietly, she grabbed her phone to call Will.
Will was sitting in a chair, trying (and failing) to concentrate on typing up his patient's notes.
"You ok?" Ethan asked, when he noticed his friend had been staring at the computer for about 5 minutes.
"Yeah, yeah I'm good. Got a weird feeling, that's all,"
"Maybe the baby is coming and Fenisha is telling you telepathically," Robyn suggested, joking.
"That's ridiculous Robyn, telepathy doesn't-"
He was cut off by his phone ringing.
"Hello?"
"Erm Will, my waters have broken."
Will swore under his breath.
"Ok, I'm coming, don't panic,"
"Wasn't planning on panicking." She said.
Robyn smirked. "You were saying?"
By the time Will had left and got home, it was just past 11:30.
"Fenisha?" He called as he entered the flat.
"I'm in here," she called from the kitchen.
"How far apart are your contractions?" He asked.
She shrugged.
"Like, 10 minutes,"
"Right I'm calling an ambulance," he said.
"It had better not be Jan or Lev," she said.
Typically, it was both Jan and Lev who arrived in their flat 10 minutes later.
"Her contractions are now 4 minutes apart," Will told them.
"Hi Fenisha," Jan said.
"Hi Jan,"
"Right, I think we should get you into the ambulance, unless you want to wake up all of your neighbours,"
Will grinned. "They won't mind being woken up,"
"They get woken up every time you have a night shift and come in at 2am," Fenisha said.
"I'm not that loud!" He said indignantly.
"Right, you know how to use this, don't you?" Jan said, handing the younger paramedic the entonox tube.
She nodded. "Of course,"
Then her eyes suddenly widened. "You're not going to... look down there... are you?"
Will smirked.
"Well, how else do you want it to come out?" Jan asked.
"I could do it," Will volunteered.
She nodded. "Thanks."
10 minutes later, Fenisha was in the ambulance, experiencing pain like she had never felt it before.
"You're doing really well," Jan told her.
She didn't feel like she was.
"So, do you want her to be born on 20th or the 21st?" Will asked.
She glared at Will. "Do you really think I care?!"
"Ok, that's fine." Then he gasped.
"I can see her head! On the next contraction, really push, ok?"
She nodded, but the pain was almost unbearable now. Despite the temperature being in the minuses, she was sweating and hot.
Finally, in a rush that was a flash of pain and then sudden joy, she heard a cry. Will was grinning, with a baby in his arms. Their baby. She gasped with joy, as Will carefully placed their little girl into her arms.
Apart from the obvious age difference, the child was like a mirror of Fenisha.
In the back of the ambulance, Will had started to check the baby over. She looked perfect- her eyes were big and wide, and she'd already proved she had a good pair of lungs with her cry (or scream) that probably woke up all of the people on his street, let along those in his flat. Not that it mattered.
"Are you going to try breastfeeding?" Will asked quietly.
She nodded. "Yeah, ok,"
The child latched on instantly, prompting big smiles from her parents.
"So was she born on the 20th or 21st in the end?" Fenisha asked.
"28 seconds past midnight,"
"That's precise,"
"Yep,"
There was a moment of comfortable silence, before Will spoke.
"What are you going to call her?" Will asked.
"You mean we," she corrected.
Will nodded, smiling. "That picture you painted a couple of weeks ago, of Italy,"
"Yeah, it was when I went to Siena, it's a beautiful city." Then she realised what Will was getting at. "She looks like a Siena,"
"What about a middle name?"
"Rose."
"Well then, Siena Rose Khatri, welcome to the world.
This chapter was quite tricky to write (let's just say I doubt I will be writing any more birth scenes) but the end was more fun. This story will probably end in about 5 chapters (not sure though) and I might have a bit of a break, then write another story centred more around Ethan.
