He'd breathed. She never thought he would again. He was under for too long, in too hostile conditions. His skin was even paler that usual; the colour had all gone from his lips.
As soon as he'd gone under Ethan had got out his phone and rung for an ambulance, then they'd run down the riverbank, waiting to haul him out if they needed to. The path went all the way along, following the river's twists and bends.
He was deathly pale, like a ghost. The boy was pale too- shaking and soaked, but other than that he was fine.
There was a dark stain of red seeping onto the snow from his foot- somehow he'd cut his foot on the stones in the river.
"Fenisha, you need to step back," Ethan said.
"No. I'm staying with him,"
"You know I can't let you treat him."
She didn't realise, but tears were starting to roll down her cheeks.
"He's so cold," she said, taking off her coat and placing it over Will.
The little boy Will had jumped in to save had been found by his brother and his family, and was now being warmed up by them.
The temperature was starting to drop- they didn't realise, but it was beginning to get dark. Ethan took off his coat as well in an attempt to make Will warmer- he didn't have a thermometer on him, but he didn't have to be a doctor to tell that he was still far too cold.
"He doesn't seem to have water in his lungs, I can't tell easily though," he told Fenisha.
"His ankle," she whispered numbly. "It's bleeding,"
Ethan checked the wound, and winced.
"What is it? Is he ok?"
"It looks like an open fracture. He must have hit it sometime while he was under- it's likely that he didn't notice because of the temperature."
She nodded.
"Fenisha you need to put your coat back on,"
She shook her head. "Will needs it more than me."
"You're freezing though. And it's minus two."
"Where are the paramedics? They should be here by now,"
"Snow usually slows them down," Ethan told her.
She was shaking slightly, tears running freely down her face. The only thing that was currently consoling her was the sharp rise and fall of Will's chest- which wasn't exactly comforting, as she knew that his breaths weren't the right speed and were weak.
"How's his pulse?"
"It's... slightly weak," Ethan admitted.
Siena, who had until now been relatively quiet, started crying.
"You need to look after her," Ethan said.
She nodded, carefully lifting her out of the pram and into her arms.
She was warm.
In the pram, where she had been laying, was a toy penguin. Will had bought it when they went Christmas shopping- it was her first proper teddy.
She tried to calm Siena down, but it was clear that the baby could tell that she was upset.
A familiar siren rang through the air. Usually, she associated that noise with her job- excitement and comfort, always moving to the next job, the next place.
But now, she was scared. Frightened. That strong front she usually put on had crumbled away.
Siena was still crying when Jan came. Lev was also on shift- he'd had to celebrate Christmas with his family the day before.
"Fenisha?" Jan caught sight of her. "What happened?"
She shook her head, unable to speak. A second crew arrived to check the child, so Lev and Jan focussed on Will.
Ethan told them what had happened, and helped to treat Will- he was a doctor, so was able to give him the extra help they needed. Jan stepped back, to give Fenisha her coat back.
"Will needs it," she mumbled.
"No, you need it, or you're going to catch hypothermia."
She felt her cheeks- they were ice cold.
"You don't want Siena to catch hypothermia though, do you?"
She shook her head. "How is he?"
"He'll be fine. Look, you're freezing, I think we should get you into the ambulance and get you warm,"
"I don't need it, I'm fine,"
"Jan?" Lev said from where he was with Will on the ground. "We're ready to go."
Ethan came with them in the ambulance- he had to go to work in the same shift Will would have worked, so he thought he may as well go with them now. He rode in the front, with Jan, while Fenisha sat in the back with Will and Lev.
"Great first Christmas," she muttered sarcastically.
"It could have been worse," Lev said. "He's alive, and stable, and that's what matters."
She nodded.
"Are you ok though? You're very pale. You must be cold."
"I'm fine. How's Will?"
"His temperature is 32 it was 31.5 so it's going in the right direction."
She nodded. 32 degrees was too cold. He was severely hypothermic.
"His ankle wound is nasty. It's an open fracture and dislocation."
"Did you give him morphine?"
Lev nodded. "5 milligrams. He's unconscious so it's not going to hurt, but it will when he wakes up."
When they arrived at the ED it was dark and around -5 degrees. The snow had all been cleared from the ground but it still lined the roofs and edges of the pavement.
"This is Will Noble, 32 years old. At approximately 4:30 he jumped into a river of ice to save a child who had fallen in. Sustained lacerations to the head and arms, and an open fracture/ dislocation to the left ankle. Hypothermic at 32.1 degrees, resp rate is 10, pulse is 58 and bp is 80/50. Gcs was 8 on scene, and is now 9."
"Do you need me to stay?" Jan asked Fenisha as the paramedics exited RESUS. She shook her head.
"I'll be fine. Thanks." Jan nodded and left.
Ethan came and stood next to her, and put his arm around her.
"He'll be fine."
"Siena needs to sleep soon," she whispered.
"Come on, let's go to the staff room. We need to give them some space."
They went through to the staff room, which was quiet. It was nearing the end of the Christmas Day shift- which meant soon the department would likely be overrun with drunks.
"Do you want tea?" Ethan asked.
"Yes please."
"You can feed Siena if you want to,"
She shook her head. She's fine at the moment. I will later."
They sat in silence for a while, until the door to the staff room opened. Fenisha's head shot up as Connie Beauchamp walked in.
"Can I see him?" She asked immediately.
"We had to send him for emergency surgery- he had free fluid around his spleen."
"But he'll be ok... won't he?"
The clinical lead nodded. "He'll be on one of the wards upstairs after the surgery; they need to operate in his ankle as well though. I'm signing him off on sick leave for 3 weeks, and then we'll see how he is from there. He won't be able to walk on his leg for at least 6 weeks though, ok?"
"Ok. Thank you. Thank you so much."
Connie smiled.
"Now, does your baby need to go to sleep yet?"
"What's the time?" She asked.
"It's 5:30,"
"I'll try and settle her in about half an hour then,"
"If you like you can sleep in the on-call room tonight- no one will be in it,"
"Thank you."
"Will you tell me when he comes back from theatre?"
Ethan nodded. "Of course,"
Siena has just finished feeding and was drifting off to sleep, so they were speaking in hushed voices.
"Well this certainly wasn't how I was expecting today to go," she said.
"He'll be fine. At least now you'll be at home together,"
"Yeah,"
"What are you going to do now then," Ethan asked.
"Well I need to stay with her, so I'll probably just try to sleep for a bit. Better than having to wait,"
"Ok. My shift starts soon, so I'd better go, but I promise I'll come and find you when he's out, ok?"
"Thank you."
At 9pm, Siena woke up again. She usually managed to sleep for about 4/5 hours before she woke up again, but she was probably unsettled by being in a different bed.
Fenisha sighed, and got up, carefully picking her baby up out of the cot. She wasn't even hungry- she just wanted to be cuddled.
A couple of minutes later, there was a gentle knock on the door. She moved to open it, and found Ethan standing there.
"He's out, the operation was fine," he said. "Sorry, did I wake her up?"
Fenisha shook her head. "No, she woke up a couple of minutes ago."
"Ok. You should probably go to bed- Will is still asleep from the anaesthetic so you won't be able to see him until the morning."
"Thanks for telling me,"
"No problem,"
"Goodnight."
"Come on, let's get you back into bed," Fenisha said once the fire had closed.
Despite it being early, she was exhausted from the day.
"Goodnight Siena," she whispered as the little baby drifted off to sleep.
This is probably my longest chapter yet.
Thank you Bonnie Sveen Fan- I have heard about what happened to Jess, but I'm not very familiar with the character. I can tell you like her!
Updates are probably going to become less frequent from now- I'm thinking of writing another story from a different fandom (Lord of the rings)
