Siena was awake for most of the night. Babies understand more than you might think about the world, Fenisha thought. She knew something wasn't right, and that she wasn't in her normal bed.
But still, it was annoying being woken up every two hours by a distressed child.
By 5am, Siena had decided that she didn't want to go back to sleep, so Fenisha took her down to the ED, hoping to see Will and talk to a friendly face.
Will still wasn't awake- but that was to be expected after hypothermia and severe trauma.
"Fenisha- you look tired, what are you doing down here?"
"Hey Ethan- she didn't really sleep to be honest- how is it down here?" She asked, looking around the department. It had been busy in the early hours of the day, but now most of the patients had been discharged.
"It was very busy, but not so much anymore. I bet it'll be busy later today though,"
She nodded. "Boxing Day usually is."
Their conversation was cut off by baby Siena starting to cry (again).
Fenisha groaned. "Not again," she muttered.
"Here, let me take her- you must be exhausted," Ethan said.
She nodded numbly. "Thanks."
"She looks just like you, you know," Ethan commented.
"She's 1 month old."
"She still does."
Siena's cries started to cease as Ethan gently rocked her.
"Thank you, Ethan."
"I doubt this was how you were planning on spending Christmas,"
"It was the last thing I was expecting," she agreed. "You must be tired though, treating mostly drunk people all night."
"Well, I knew what I was in for. It's so quiet in here now though."
It was quiet. The only people around seemed to be other hospital staff.
"We were playing Christmas music all through the night, but now it just feels... weird. It's that post-Christmas feeling where all the excitement is gone."
The ringing of the phone in the ED broke the silence.
"Hello, Holby City Emergency Department,"
There was a short conversation over the phone, before Ethan put it down.
"Idiots."
"What is it?"
"A bunch of drunks have set off fireworks inside a pub. At least ten casualties. First ones are arriving in 2 minutes. You should probably wait in the staff room or go back upstairs- it's probably not a good environment for a baby."
"I'll wait down here- if that's ok,"
Ethan nodded. "I'd better go and get RESUS cleared."
Two hours later, the ED was busy again. There were several main casualties- most of whom were the ones who had set off the fireworks- and countless others with minor injuries.
Ethan had just got into a break, when he saw Fenisha starting to go upstairs with Siena.
"I'm going to see if Will's awake- I left you a text because you weren't answering your phone."
"Sorry, it was really busy. I can come with you if you like?"
"Yeah, ok,"
Will was in his own room which was separate to the wards. A surgeon that neither of them recognised was exiting the room, just as they were entering.
"Is he awake?" Fenisha asked nervously.
"Yes- but he's only just woken up and has some nasty injuries so be gentle, ok?"
They nodded.
"Thank you"
"Hey Will, how are you feeling?"
Will smiled weakly. "I've been better,"
"Please don't go jumping into any ice rivers any time soon,"
"I'm not planning on it."
"You know, you saved that boy's life. He nearly died. You nearly died."
Will nodded. "I know. I'm sorry- I didn't really think."
Ethan left them alone for a while, as he had to get back to his shift.
A couple of minutes later, a nurse came in and, after taking Will's obs, said he could sit up for a bit.
"Siena missed you," Fenisha said.
"Really? She's 1 month old,"
"I know- but seriously, she wouldn't sleep at all last night."
"Mrs Beauchamp is signing you off work for 6 weeks on sick leave- it might be longer though."
"Makes sense. Hey, now I get to spend more time with you two without taking time off!"
Fenisha laughed.
"You still up for going to Ireland?"
"Yeah- we'd better not go for too long because my family will fuss over me. Do they know what happened?"
"I don't know- I was down as your next of kin though."
"Yeah, I updated it after Siena was born."
"You should call her."
"I might leave out some of the details though- don't want her to worry too much."
This was no way my best chapter but I had to get this part down.
There will be another story that carries on from this (there are a few more chapters of this story though) but I'm not sure whether to just add it on or make a new book- what would you do?
