Prologue
It was a bright autumnal day, about a week before Halloween would begin. The breeze was crisp and sent leaves dancing and tumbling playfully in the streets of Radiant Garden, and Sora and his friends made their way toward the castle to meet with Ienzo. The streets were filled with citizens going about and putting up decorations for the Halloween celebration. A few of the town's children were also out and about helping in spreading fake spiderwebs and streamers. Roxas jumped back as a group of children ran past with some of them trailing decorations in their wake.
"I just love Halloween!" Sora grinned as he walked down the street with his friends. "This is Halloween, this is Halloween, bump and scream in the dead of night!"
Riku couldn't help but chuckle at his friend's joyful singing.
"You always DID like this time of year." he smiled.
"What can I say? It's the best time of the year! aside from Christmas that is." Sora grinned.
Nearby, there were stalls being set up for the town's celebration. A woman at one of the stalls was putting a batch of caramel apples on a tray lined with waxed paper to cool. Benches were set up behind the stall, half filled with the sugar coated fruit.
"What's that?" said Xion, her eyes wide with wonder. "I've never had that before.
"Oooh, THESE are caramel apples." Sora said.
He went over to the stall to buy a few for his friends.
"Give it a try!" he insisted warmly, holding one out to Xion.
Xion took it carefully and took a small bite, shock soon becoming apparent as the caramel stuck to her teeth.
"Oh! It's so STICKY." she said in surprise.
"But GOOD, right?" Sora grinned.
He soon took a bite of his own and his smile grew happily.
"Real nice! So good and flavorful! And crisp too!"
Roxas ate his caramel apple as he enjoyed the conversation. As he took another bite, however, he let out a shocked yelp as the stick it had been on snapped in two. He scrambled in vain to try and save it from falling on the ground, getting his hands covered in the sticky brown sugar.
"Oh, that's just bad luck." Sora said with a frown.
His gaze soon turned toward the distance and was surprised to see a much larger stall off in the distance. As they drew closer, the friends could see there was a rather large collection of books were being sold.
"Oooooooh..."
Sora's eyes lit up as he was drawn towards a large, old book resting amongst the rest of the books. The words "Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark" were written across the cover of the book. It was hard to tell if the book had been damaged due to age or if it had already been in such poor shape.
"That book looks like it's seen better days." Riku remarked, looking over the book on the shelf.
Sora and Riku began looking it through.
"Oooh...horror stories! And these look like really scary ones too. We should get it!" Sora exclaimed with a huge grin.
Riku glanced over toward the stall.
"Five munny." said the guy behind the counter.
Roxas reached to retrieve munny to pay but was thankful Xion bought it as Roxas's hands were still covered in caramel. Taking a moment to himself, Roxas went over to one of the large basins of water and began dunking his hands in to try and clean them.
"Hey!" shouted a voice. "These tubs ain't for bathin' in!"
The owner of the voice was an elderly woman who had set the tubs up for the Radiant Garden townsfolk to bob for apples.
"O-oh! Eh, sorry." Roxas said, sheepishly.
He dejectedly hurried back to his friends, his hands still a bit sticky from the brown sugar.
'I can't seem to have a break..' he inwardly groaned as he joined his friends once again.
Sora soon glanced up with a huge grin.
"Let's go find a spot to sit down and read this book!" he said, holding the big book of scary stories up for the others to see.
Riku looked at him a bit incredulously.
"We were supposed to meet with Ienzo, remember? He invited us to stay at the castle."
"Good idea, we can read it there." Sora said as they all headed down the road, off for the direction of the castle, Sora soon humming nonchalantly.
Kairi took that moment to look through some of the pages of the book, when she noticed the words were written in some kind of deep red ink. As her eyes flicked over the story title, a chill ran through her as her gaze inexplicably moved toward the corn maze set up near the square, catching sight of a rather disturbing scarecrow which seemed to have not been there before.
Sora blinked as he looked at the scarecrow too.
"Hmm. That's an odd-looking scarecrow. It's UGLY too." He confessed as he glanced back at Kairi, and the book.
The page Kairi was on had the title "Harold" written at the top of the page. As they were headed toward the castle, they were stopped as a group of three people. Roxas groaned as he recognized the leader, a boy a bit older than himself and Xion.
"Well, if it isn't the loser and his gang of misfits." Seifer grinned rather cruelly.
"What are you three doing here?" Roxas frowned.
Seifer blinked innocently.
"Who, us? We're here to spend the holiday."
Seifer took notice of the book Kairi was holding, snatching it away from her.
"Oh, what do we have HERE?"
"Hey! Give that BACK!" Roxas shouted.
"Really? A book of scary STORIES?" Seifer deadpanned. "You guys are so LAME! Here, let me get rid of it for you."
Seifer then took the book and with one hard tug, managed to break the books fragile spine, sending its delicate pages in all directions, leaving Sora and his friends infuriated.
"What did you do that for!?" Roxas shouted.
"Yeah! We didn't do anything to you!" added Xion, becoming angry.
Seifer just laughed and began to leave with his friends.
"Cya later, losers!"
Sora began to carefully pick up the pages.
"That big jerk..." Sora muttered before he noticed something strange.
One of the pages that had been blank was...filling up. With words. "...oh my Lord. G-Guys! GUYS! LOOK!" He held the page up for all of them to see.
As they looked at the page, they were shocked to see that in the story titled "Harold" Seifer's name soon wrote itself onto the page.
Author's Note: I was thinking of adding more to this chapter, since there wasn't really much to go on before.. I will try to get more up soon..
