Chapter 1, The Next in Line

The sun rose on a new day, rousing the people of the tribe from sleep and telling them it was time to leave their huts. The people were walking out of their homes and quickly making their way to the large, almost castle-like hut placed near the center of the large village where their Chief and Chieftess stood basking in the light of the sunrise. As the crowd grew and the sounds of excitement became overwhelming, the Chief, Stoick, stepped forward, his hand going up to silence the people. Stoick was a large man who toward over anyone who stood next to him, his broad frame gave him the appearance of a man that could crush a boulder with his bare hands, he was dressed in leather armor and fur for a special occasion.

"People of Berk, I know there has been much fear in us all as the Chieftess, my beloved Valka, reached the end of her pregnancy a month too soon. It has been a long road, and a worrisome recovery, but now, I stand before you as a proud father of a son!" The tribe erupted in excited cries as Valka, a curvy tall woman, took her place next to her husband. "My people, I present to you, and welcome to the light, our son," Stoick reached his hand out behind him to the open door of the large hut as Mim, the spiritual leader, a pale, smiling man, stepped out holding a small bundle of blankets in his arms. The small man stepped forward in between the Chieftess and Chief, showing the sweet pink face of the baby to the tribe. "Hiccup!" More cheers were heard as the little baby opened his green eyes to gaze out upon the gathered people.

Pitch, A tall lanky man with ashen skin and black hair, paced the cave he had taken refuge in, hiding from the nearby tribe as he glared off into didn't notice as Gobber, a large man, stepped into the cave and cleared his throat.

"Ah Gobber, to what do I owe this pleasure?" Pitch asked with a bored tone.

"Thought I'd give you some warning, the Chief is on his way to speak with you." Gobber crossed his arms, watching Pitch roll his eyes at him. "What were you thinking? You missed your nephews welcome to the light! You should have been first in line!"

Pitch grit his teeth turning his back on the man. "I WAS first in line." He said under his breath.

"Pitch." Stoick said as he entered the cave. He halted for a moment, nodding at Gobber who, with a bow, left the cave so that the brothers could talk. "I did not see you at Hiccup's welcome." The large man stated, walking up beside the lanky man.

Pitch feigned a gasp. "Was that today? Oh dear, it must have slipped my mind." Pitch glared at Stoick, clearly annoyed with the much broader man.

Stoick sighed. "Pitch, you need to let this go, that boy may need guidance one day, I would like for him to be able to seek it from you." The Chief patted his brother's shoulder only to be brushed off.

"Hmm…" Pitch rubbed his hairless chin as if considering the Chief's words. "Pass." Pitch side stepped Stoick, making his way to exit the cave.

"Pitch," Stoick called. Pitch continued to walk away. "Pitch!" He called again, now following him. "Don't turn away from me." He grabbed the smaller man's shoulder, turning him to face him.

Pitch glared at the large Chief. "No, brother, you are the one who should not turn away." Stoick gritted his teeth, releasing the shoulder.

"Is that a threat?" Stoick lowered his voice threateningly as Pitch once again turned away to leave.

"Of course not, how would I with my small frail form pose a threat to you dear brother?" Pitch said back as he left the mouth of the cave. Stoick walked just outside to watch the ashen man walk away. Gobber moved to stand next to him with a sigh.

"So, how'd it go?" He asked, watching Pitch's retreating form.

Stoick sighed heavily, shaking his head. "What am I going to do with him?" He asked.

Gobber shrugged. "He'd make a fine tooth pick."

-S2-

A Little Hiccup excitedly opened the window to his room, bouncing on the balls of his feet as he saw that the sun was just starting to rise. He dashed out of his room and down the hall to the door of his parent's room, pulling it open with a little difficulty due to his tiny form. He ran at full speed leaping onto the bed where his parents slept. A groan sounded from Stoick. "Dad! Dad!" Hiccup called, shaking the large man.

Valka chuckled, reaching over to shake her Chief. "Darling, your son is awake."

Stoick groaned again, rolling away from the Chieftess and child. "Not my son, before sunrise." The woman chuckled as Hiccup gaped at his father pushing on him again.

"Daaaaad, you promised!" He cried as he shook the large man with all his tiny might.

Stoick chuckled lightly, rolling over again to look at the pitiful face his son was making. "Fine son, I'm up." He stood from the bed to place his leather armor on his form before scooping up his son with one large arm, Valka smiling at the pair from the bed. Stoick carried Hiccup out of the house and started making his way up the mountain their village rested against. When they made it to a cliff near the top of the mountain the sun was just above the ocean, the view was of the village, an ocean on one side and a vast open never ending land on the other. "This is our land Hiccup, our home." Stoick smiled at his son who stared out over the open land with awe. "You see son, Chiefs rise, and they fall, like the sun." Hiccup looked at Stoick curiously. "One day my reign will set, and you, my son, will rise as the new Chief." Green eyes widened at him, looking back at the vast land.

"All of this will be mine?" Hiccup sounded both curious, and concerned.

"Everything the light touches." Stoick ruffled the brown hair with a chuckle.

"That's a lot of responsibility." Hiccup clutched Stoick's shirt with a pout.

Stoick laughed merrily. "You will be a great Chief son, when you are ready."

Hiccup searched the land with wonder before his vision settled on the edge of the land, where large hills cast dark shadows. "What about that shadowy area?" He asked, pointing at it.

Stoick's lips formed a line. "That is not our land Hiccup, you must never go there."

"But can't Chiefs do whatever they want?" He asked, looking up at his father with a tilt of his head.

"A Chief's purpose is to his people, keep them safe and happy, it is not to do as he pleases." Stoick said as they made their way back down the mountain. As they walked through the village, the few early risers of the tribe waved at the pair as they passed by. Stoick smiled at Hiccup as he enthusiastically waved back. "Hiccup, as a Chief, you need to understand that all things are important, there is nothing a Chief should not be willing to do for his people. You must also remember that every living creature should be respected, including the deer or fish."

"But we eat those!" Hiccup said in shock.

"Yes we do, and as such our lives depend on them. We must respect the life we take to nourish our own, for one day our own lives will end and nourish another, it is a never ending circle Hiccup." Hiccup nodded with excitement. Suddenly Gobber came running to the pair.

"Stoick!" He called as he tried to catch his breath. "The scouts found Berserkers in Berk, just off the lake." Stoick's teeth clenched.

"Gobber, take Hiccup home." He said handing the small boy over to Gobber who nodded.

"But dad, can't I go with you?" The future chief asked, reaching out for the large man.

"It's too dangerous for you son." Stoick said as he pulled his sword from its sheath at his side and took off running, calling after some other fighters to join him. Hiccup pouted.

"Don't worry, one day you'll chase them away yourself." Gobber said as he started walking to Hiccup's home. "If you ever manage to grow that is."

"Hey!" Hiccup pouted. As they walked through the village he spotted a pair of children playing in the trees. Hiccup started to bounce in the man's arms. "Gobber, I want to go play!" He called pushing against the man. Gobber looked over at the children and grinned at the little blond girl and the white haired boy.

"I suppose it'd be good for you to go play. She is your betrothed afterall." He said letting Hiccup out of his hold. Hiccup looked at him quizzically.

"What's betrothed?" He asked.

Gobber realized his mistake and made an uncomfortable gesture. "Well Hiccup, Astrid is promised to you." The boy seemed even more confused, looking over at the little blond girl as she laughed at the white haired boy climbing a tree. Gobber sighed at the boy. "One day you're going to be marrying that girl." Hiccup's head whipped around in shock.

"Marry Astrid!?" Hiccup shook his head as his hands waved about. "No way, she's my friend, that's gross! And Jack's my bestest friend, it's just weird."

"Oh right, can't marry your best friend's sister, that would be strange. I'll let Stoick know, I'm sure that's a plenty good enough excuse. " Gobber said sarcastically.

"Hiccup!" The little boy with Astrid called, waving from the tree.

"I'm gonna go Gobber. There is no way I'm marrying Astrid." Hiccup stuck out his tongue at the man before running to the other two children. Astrid was a couple years older than the two boys who were born the same year, as a result she already towered over both boys, especially Hiccup who was very small for his age. Astrid ruffled the small boy's hair as he grinned at her, swatting at her hands.

"Jack, how'd you get all the way up there!?" Hiccup called after the white haired boy high up in the tree.

"This tree is easy to climb!" Jack called back, quickly making his way back down the branches, reaching his hand out for Hiccup. "Come on, it's fun." Jack grinned at the future chief, Hiccup grabbed a hold of the pale hand and Jack pulled up the small boy with little struggle.

"Be careful," Astrid said, her hands on her hips looking every bit the big sister. Jack stuck out his tongue at her as he helped Hiccup carefully up the tree. "Jack, Hiccup shouldn't be up so high!" She called out in concern, the boys ignored her climbing even higher, Hiccup holding onto Jack. It was well known in the village that Astrid was very protective of the tiny brunette, far more than she was with her nimble little brother. As the boys showed no sign of stopping their climb Astrid groaned and watched them closely, her arms out a bit in case she had to catch the boy. "Alright, but don't cry to me if you fall and get hurt!" She yelled again.

As the boys reached the point where they could go no higher, Hiccup sat on a branch next to Jack, kicking his feet in excitement. "I wonder what it would be like to fly," Jack said, staring out over the village and the ocean.

Hiccup grinned, sticking his arms out like a bird. "I think a lot like this!" He said as his balance was thrown a bit and he wobbled. Jack yelped, grabbing the smaller boy around the middle to balance him.

"Careful! If you fall, Astrid will never let me here the end of it." Hiccup just grinned more.

"I can't fall, I'm the future Chief, the tree can't hurt me." Jack laughed at that.

"Yeah right." Jack adjusted to help Hiccup climb back down. The return to the ground was much more treacherous than the climb up, with only another seven feet to go, Hiccup's tiny hand lost its grip as his foot missed his next branch. Jack grabbed his shirt, the sudden weight pulling him down too. They landed with a loud thud, Jack's head on Hiccup's chest, hearing a fluttering heartbeat and a groan from the little boy.

"Hiccup!" Astrid yelled as she ran over, shoving her brother off the smaller boy and lifting the brunette up. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine!" Hiccup yelled trying to escape the iron grip of the girl. "Just a few bruises."

"Yeah, I'm fine too, thanks for asking," Jack groaned as he rolled out the pain in the arm that was yanked by Hiccup's weight. Hiccup finally pried Astrid off of him and looked at Jack.

"Sorry."

"Let's just not make a habit of it, okay?" Jack sighed laying back down with his arms spread out, causing the other two to laugh.

-S2-

As time went on Hiccup continued to be behind the other children in growth, causing some concern for Valka and Stoick, Jack had caught up to Astrid in height and was at least a foot taller than Hiccup, though Jack remained a skinny boy Hiccup was much skinnier, while Astrid started to fill out. At 15 Hiccup wasn't receiving the respect from the tribe he was meant to, some questioned if the tiny boy should be passed over for the chiefdom. But Stoick and Valka were confident that he would eventually catch up.

Hiccup sat on top of the mountain he and his father had once used to look out over all of Berk, using a book of paper to sketch out armor and weapon designs. "Why so glum?" Hiccup jumped, looking over his shoulder at his uncle.

"Uncle Pitch, you scared me," Hiccup sighed, putting his book away. Pitch chuckled, walking over to stand next to the boy.

"Ah Berk, so peaceful and quiet. All thanks to your father's wonderful rule." Pitch looked over the land fondly, a smirk on his lips. "I do hope you will be as successful." Hiccup sighed.

"If I even get there. The tribe doesn't think I can be Chief," Hiccup looked all around with a pout, his eyes settling on the shadows at the edge of the lands.

"Well that's easy to fix Hiccup, You just have to prove to them how strong you are. Obviously they can't see it by looking at you so you will have to show them." Pitch examined his hands in a relaxed manner.

"Yeah? How do I do that?" Hiccup looked at the man curiously.

"Well there are various ways, challenge someone to a dual, hunt a ferocious beast, venture into the dragon graveyard-"

"Dragon graveyard!?" Hiccup got to his feet in excitement, staring at the man, urging him to continue.

Pitch dramatically placed his hand over his mouth. "Oh dear, I didn't mean to say that. You shouldn't go there, only the bravest warriors dare venture to the shadows."

"The shadows?" Hiccup looked over at the hills at the edge. "That's what's in the shadows?" Pitch sighed, turning to Hiccup.

"Hiccup, you must never go there, you simply wouldn't be safe, and I don't know what I would do if my dear nephew got hurt," Pitch patted the teens head, causing Hiccup to glare at him, though it was more of a pout on his youthful face.

"I…. Okay…." Pitch smiled kindly.

"Good, run along and play with your friends now. I've heard Jack has been looking for you all day." Hiccup nodded, taking off for the village. As he disappeared Pitch grinned after him wickedly.

Hiccup ran down the mountain, almost tripping several times and successfully tripping twice, until he made it back into the village. He looked back and forth until he spotted Jack with Valka, Astrid and Jack's father North. He ran over bouncing to a stop next to Jack. Jack grinned at him. "Hey Hiccup, where have you been?" He asked curiously.

"Oh you know, just around." Hiccup grabbed Jack's hand. "Come on, I want to show you something."

Jack pulled his hand free. "I'm kind of in the middle of something," He said, pointing his thumb over his shoulder back at the conversing group.

"Jack, I want to show you something really amazing." Hiccup made jerking gestures with his arms trying to indicate that he couldn't talk about it around their parents.

"And what is this amazing thing you two are off to see?" Valka asked with a chuckle. Hiccup fidgeted under her eyes, feeling guilty for lying to his mother.

"Just something over... by the... lake…" Jack looked at him in annoyance.

"What's so amazing about the lake?" He asked accusingly. Hiccup gave him a pointed look that told Jack to shut up.

"Riiiiight….. Dad, can I go with Hiccup?" Jack asked with a grin.

North chuckled loudly, looking at Valka. "Is fine by me. What do you think?" He asked the Chieftess. Valka nodded her agreement.

"You may go," The boys grinned at each other, turning to leave. "So long as Astrid goes with you," She added, causing the boys to groan.

As the trio made their way to the lake Astrid was clad in her armor, ax on her back as she watched their surroundings as if something could jump out at any moment. The boys opted for more casual wear, Hiccup in his green shirt and vest as well as his baggy pants, while Jack was in a simple white shirt and leather pants, feet bare to the earth. Blue eyes met green curiously as Jack whispered. "So, where are we really going?"

"There's a dragon graveyard just at the border," Hiccup whispered back.

"Really? Sounds a little dangerous, you think you can handle it fishbone?" Jack teased, causing Hiccup's face to go red.

"Of course I can Snowflake, we'll go, come back, and everything will be better, I'll be respected." Hiccup sighed, Jack wrapping an arm over the smaller boy's shoulders.

"Alright, so how do we get rid of the stick in the mud?" Jack asked, gesturing to his sister. Astrid caught the motion in the corner of her eye and glared at them.

"I was hoping you would have an idea on that," Hiccup whispered in Jack's ear, causing goose bumps on the pale skin.

"What are you two talking about?" She demanded, stopping to face them.

"Nothing," The two boys said, smiling innocently.

Once they made it to the lake, Jack walked over to a steep area they often used to jump into the water below. "Hey Astrid, what's that?" Jack asked curiously, pointing down into the water. Astrid rolled her eyes, walking away from Hiccup's side to look over the fall.

"What?" She demanded.

"That, right there," Jack pointed harder, leaning in.

"There isn't anything there Jack," Astrid gritted her teeth.

"Or you're just blind." Jack crossed his arms with a huff. Astrid sighed, leaning over as much as she dared, squinting her eyes at nothing. Jack smirk, he placed both hands on his sister and pushed her over. A loud yelp followed by a splash and Jack was running at Hiccup, grabbing his arm and running full speed into the tall grass to escape before Astrid could climb back up. He briefly heard her yell "JACK!" but didn't stop until Hiccup yanked him to run in another direction, now leading the way.

They came to a halt just at the border before the graveyard, trying to catch their breath as they calmly walked the rest of the way. "Did you really have to push her?" Hiccup grumbled at Jack.

"What? It worked didn't it?" Jack grinned at him, once again placing his arm over Hiccup's shoulders, causing the smaller boy to blush. As they came upon a steep hill Hiccup lost his footing, the future chief grabbed onto Jack for support but only managed to bring him tumbling down the hill with him. Loud grunts and groans were heard as they landed with a thump at the bottom of the hill, Jack's head resting on Hiccup's chest, his hips between the thin boy's legs. Hiccup blushed furiously as he heard Jack say, "Everytime!" He pushed up to hover over Hiccup as he rubbed his head. Green met blue and Jack immediately noticed the deep blush on Hiccup's cheeks. "What?" Hiccup opened his mouth to talk but nothing but gibberish came out. Jack smirked. "What's up Haddock? Crushing on me?" Jack teased, bringing Hiccup out of the stupor. The brunette groaned pushing Jack away and scrambling out from under him.

"Yeah right, Frost!" Jack laughed at him before stopping abruptly to take in their surroundings. Bones, dragon bones both large and small were everywhere.

Jack whistled as Hiccup only stared in awe. "We could get in some real trouble for being here," Jack said, venturing deeper into what they had come to know as the shadows.

"I mean, it's a graveyard, what's going to be out here?"

"Besides about a dozen dangerous animals? Try Baserkers!" They both jumped as Astrid came down the hill, still dripping wet and furious. "You two are such idiots, not only are you way outside of Berk's borders but you're here with no weapons." Astrid marched up to Jack, glaring at him accusingly. "What are you thinking bringing Hiccup here?"

"What? Why do you assume I did this?" Astrid shook her head, walking over to Hiccup and grabbing his arm.

"We are going home, now." Her stride was stopped by a loud cackle. The trio froze, turning to look over their shoulders to see three people armed to the teeth, wearing furs and skins coming around the cliffs, one girl with dark hair, a young man with a tattoo on his face and an older man with long hair and a beard.

"You aren't going anywhere," the tattooed man said, grinning at them.

Astrid stepped in front of Hiccup, holding out her ax ready to fight. Jack, having no weapon, grabbed a long stick hooked at the end. "Jack," Astrid started as the trio stepped back from the advancing Baserkers. "Take Hiccup and run," Jack looked at her with disbelief.

"But-" he was interrupted by the tattooed man yelling as he attacked. Astrid easily blocked him.

"NOW!" She yelled. Jack ran over, grabbing Hiccup and taking off for the border, the dark haired girl chasing after them. Just as the border was in sight, Hiccup lost his footing, bringing Jack with him. They looked up to see the girl swinging a doable headed ax at them, Jack swung the staff around, hitting her in the stomach and causing her to stumble back in pain. Astrid came running after them, the two males hot on her heels, she blocked the girls second swing and attempted to help pull Hiccup to his feet but they were quickly surrounded.

"Well, well, isn't that Chief Stoick's son?" The girl asked, tilting her head at them.

"I do believe it is," The tattooed man said back as the bearded man only glared at them silently. "It will be a pleasure to tear you apart!" He yelled, cackling as he advanced on them. Before he could swing his weapon he was tackled and thrown aside like a rag doll by a large body, another large figure grabbing the older man and girl and tossing them as well. Jack got Hiccup to his feet as they took in the three men standing around them, Stoick, Gobber and North.

"How dare you lay a hand on MY son!" Stoick stood over them, sword in hand, ready to kill.

"He came onto our land!" The girl yelled back at them, the two men behind her seeming much more fearful than she was.

"You do not want a war with me Heather." Stoick growled, glaring at her.

Heather rolled her eyes as there was a whimper behind her. "Pull yourself together Dagur," she said to the tattooed man. Heather looked back at Stoick. "Get off our land." Stoick nodded, still glaring at her as he led the large men and teens across the border back to Berk. Once they were deep enough into their own lands that they wouldn't be overheard, North stepped in front of the siblings, arms crossed.

"This is how you keep little chief safe? Take him to Berserker territory!?" He asked angrily, the siblings flinching.

"It was my idea," Hiccup spoke up before North could yell anymore, causing Stoick to snap his eyes to the boy. "I dragged Jack along and Astrid tried to stop us. Please don't blame them." Hiccup's head dropped, not meeting his father's eyes.

"It's not like he forced me along…" Jack said quietly, not sure if it's safe to speak.

"North, Gobber, take Jack and Astrid home, I must speak with my son," Stoick ordered, the two men nodding as they led the brother and sister away, Jack looking back at Hiccup reluctantly before following his father. Hiccup fidgeted, wishing Jack could have stayed with him for support.

"Gods Dad," Hiccup stepped up next to the large man, suddenly feeling even smaller than he was. "I-I'm sorry."

Stoick towered over Hiccup, glaring at him. "Why is it that you cannot follow the simplest order? Stay away from the shadows, that's the only boundary I gave you!" Hiccup ducked his head in shame. "Not only that, but you put Jack and Astrid in danger too, what if one of you had been killed?"

"I just wanted things to be better, I wanted the tribe to accept me as their future chief. I thought if I went to brave the place no one would go that maybe…. They would respect me…" Hiccup looked at Stoick with the saddest eyes the Chief had ever seen. "I didn't think Astrid would have caught up, and I would have never let anything happen to Jack." Hiccup said with determination despite the sadness he carried.

Stoick sighed. "Hiccup, wisdom comes with time, something you have not yet had. But you show great courage, and great love. One day you will be chief, no matter how the tribe feels about it, because I believe in you. One day you will be a greater chief than I." Hiccup smiled at that, nodding at his father.

"I just wanted them to know that I would be as strong as you." Hiccup kicked at the dirt under his feet.

"I have never felt more weak than I did when I realized where you had gone," Stoick admitted, patting his son's shoulder. "Being strong isn't in your body Hiccup, it's in your heart, you are behind others but you will grow and become strong, I believe in that." Hiccup smiled at him before a heavy sigh left him.

"When I become chief… does that mean you will be gone?" Hiccup suddenly asked, catching the Chief off guard.

"I will step down before my time Hiccup, so I might guide you in the late years of my life. But yes, one day you will no longer be able to see me." Stoick knelt down next to Hiccup, looking him in the eye. "But I will always be with you Hiccup, up there," Stoick pointed at the sky where the stars were shining brightly.

"The stars? You're going to become a star?" Hiccup asked, unsure.

Stoick chuckled. "Yes Hiccup, the stars, great warriors past become a star, watching over loved ones. So you see, I will always watch over you Hiccup, no matter what." The future chief smiled

When the pair returned to the village Jack came running to Hiccup, pulling the small boy into a hug. Astrid came up behind her brother wrapping her arms around them both. Stoick continued on, looking at North pointedly. "Astrid," The girl pulled away from the pair of boys, looking at her father. "We talk now." He gestured for her to follow. Astrid ruffled Hiccup's hair and glared at Jack before following the two large men up to the Chief's house. Jack pushed Hiccup away looking at his green eyes.

"You okay?" He asked, cupping a tan cheek. Hiccup swatted him away.

"I'm fine." Hiccup smiled at Jack as they walked over to their favorite tree.

"Stoick wasn't too hard on you? Dad got pretty loud." Jack tilted his head with a grimace as he helped Hiccup onto a branch to sit, Jack following to sit next to him.

"There was yelling, but I scared him I guess so he wasn't exactly angry," Hiccup explained, scratching the back of his head as they watched the bonfire being lit at the center of the village.

Jack laughed at that. "Our dads, a couple of giant old softies." Hiccup smiled as an arm was slung around his shoulders, Jack's head resting on Hiccup's.

Suddenly Hiccup jumped. "I uh, managed to grab you a little souvenir." Hiccup reached in his pocket pulling out a dragon's tooth.

Jack scoffed. "Really, you're running for your life and you still manage to grab a souvenir?" Jack took the tooth, examining it.

"You uh, like it?" Hiccup blushed. Jack smiled holding the tooth to his chest.

"Love it."

Astrid walked into the Chief's hut, being directed by the man to sit across from him with her father. "Thank you Astrid, for protecting my son," Stoick said, smiling kindly at her.

"Of course, Hiccup is like my brother, I would never let anything happen to him." Astrid smiled, taking note as Stoick's smile fell.

"Astrid, I have an offer I wish to make to you, I have already received North's blessing, now it is for you to accept." Astrid frowned at that, unsure. "I believe you should be the next Chieftess, by my son's side." Stoick seemed to be waiting for Astrid's response but she was giving none, only staring at him in complete shock. "I am asking if you will accept a betrothal to Hiccup."

"No," She said flatly, clenching her fists in her lap.

"No?" Both men echoed, shocked.

"Does Hiccup even know what you are doing? That you are trying to decide his future for him?" Astrid asked, standing from her spot to look at Stoick.

"I was going to discuss it with him after you agreed."

"After it was decided?" She advanced on him.

"Nothing would have been decided without him," Stoick responded, standing his ground against the girl. "If that is your only concern Astrid, I promise Hiccup won't be forced into anything, I simply wanted to know your thoughts before I discussed it with him. You would make a fine Chieftess, you are perfect to balance Hiccup-"

"No," Astrid said again. The two men stared at her.

"Why?" North asked.

"Hiccup is like my brother, I could never marry him, and he wouldn't want to marry me," Astrid explained looking between Stoick and North. "He… likes someone else…" This information seemed to shock Stoick.

"Who?" He asked quietly.

Astrid sat down next to North. "I don't think it's my place to tell you sir. I'm not even sure Hiccup knows himself at this point."

"He doesn't spend time with anyone else in the village…" Stoick's eyes widened a bit, looking at North in shock. North started to chuckle with glee.

"Perhaps we will one day merge family after all!" North said through his laughter, Astrid smiling at her father fondly.

Pitch walked along the floor of a small canyon, Hiccup trailing behind him writing furiously in his book. "Uh where exactly are we going Pitch?" Hiccup asked as he finally put the book away, taking note of his surroundings.

"I thought you might like to see my own favorite spot. I like to come here to be alone, think, come up with new ideas." Pitch turned to smile at Hiccup. "Stay out of trouble with the Berserkers." Hiccup flinched.

"You heard about that?"

Pitch started walking ahead again. "The whole village knows about that." Pitch grinned as he came to a lone tree.

"Great," Hiccup groaned.

"I know the view isn't as nice as the mountain, but you are less likely to be interrupted, it's a good place to reflect," Pitch explained as Hiccup stepped into the shade of the tree and sat on the large rock under it. "Why don't I leave you with your thoughts now, you seem to have a lot on your mind." Pitch smiled menacingly as he walked away. Leaving Hiccup to stare at the canyon walls.

For some time he only stared off into space, then he pulled out his book and looked over his sketches, armor design, weapon design, all things his father was impressed with and Gobber provided the tools to make, if nothing else the village liked the things he created. Hiccup paused at a page, the only sketch on it a smiling Jack, Hiccup smiled fondly at the sketch of his best friend and found he wished to see him. The brunette stood up to leave when the ground began to tremble and a loud roar sounded. Eyes wide Hiccup looked up to see a dragon flying overhead, the creature was scarred all over, rage in its eyes as it flew in circles overhead. Hiccup backed up under the tree, attempting to stay out of sight. As he grabbed the lowest branch and struggled to pull himself up the small tree shook, catching the beasts attention. The dragon flew in a few more circles, eyeing the tree to see what had made the noise, minutes passed until the creature finally landed, sniffing at the branches. Hiccup held his breath, for a moment he thought he was safe, but the dragon opened its mouth, fire burning inside. With a yelp Hiccup dropped from the tree and started to run from the winged beast. Hiccup ran rather fast for someone so small but the dragon was catching up quickly, as Hiccups luck usually did, it ran out, the future chief's foot caught on a rock and he fell to the ground. Hiccup backed away against the wall as the dragon prepared to fire on him, Hiccup closed his eyes.

Everything happened too fast for Hiccup to process, a loud cry of his name, the sound of metal hitting stone, a loud shout of pain, large arms wrapping around him, the sounds of a fire blast and then silence as a heavy body fell on him. Hiccup opened his eyes as he heard the dragon flying away. Fur, he saw fur, leather and red hair. Hiccup felt panic as he pushed the heavy body off of him, his father now lay on the ground, perfectly still.

"Dad?" Hiccup spoke, shaking the man. "Dad, get up!" Tears formed in Hiccup's eyes as he shook the man. "Please get up, we have to go home!" Hiccup could see blood spreading from under the body, his voice turning to desperate sobs as he buried his face in the leather. "We have to go home, to mom, to everyone! Dad! Please! GET UP!" Hiccup stopped shaking him, now simply sobbing into the lifeless chest. "Please… dad… come back…"

Pitch stepped out of the shadows, bloody blade tucked behind his back. "Hiccup…" The boy's head shot up to look at the man. "What have you done?" Pitch looked down on Stoick with sad eyes. Hiccup shook his head.

"It was an accident…"

"The Chief is dead," Pitch sneered at Hiccup. "And it's your fault." Pitch's grip on the knife tightened but before he could move Hiccup got to his feet, shaking his head before he ran in the opposite direction of the village.

Hiccup couldn't face them, he could see the sad and angry faces of his people. Gobber would never forgive him, his mother wouldn't be able to look at him, Astrid would cry, and Jack, Jack would leave him. So Hiccup ran as fast as he could, it didn't take him long to realize he was being followed, the familiar cackle of the Berserker Dagur a strong give away. Hiccup picked up speed, trying to not allow them to catch up, not even bothering to question how they came to chase him. For once Hiccup's luck seemed to be on his side as he fell down a steep hill into a small forest of thorny bushes, very few of them managed to scratch him as he made his way out of them and as he left the bushes behind he no longer heard his pursuers.

On the hill, Dagur came to an abrupt stop at the edge of the steep hill, Heather and Johan, the bearded man, not seeing his halt, accidentally pushed him over the hill as they stopped. Dagur yelped as many thorns embedded in his skin before he quickly climbed back out. Heather shrieked, throwing down her sword. "He's getting away!" She yelled.

"Well go after him!" Dagur yelled at her as he started pulling thorns from his skin.

"I'm not going in there, not after this happened." She gestured at him as he bled all over his clothes. "I doubt he will return anyway, after leaving as such a coward, he won't show his face again."

"And if he did return," Johan finally spoke. "We simply kill the little boy."

Dagur cackled at that.

So it's looking like this will be three chapters, maaaaaaaaaybe four or five depending on how it flows and if I do an epilogue. I did my best to keep everyone in character, some parts were harder than others.

After writing this I have realized how similar the characters Scar and Pitch are. I literally wrought the line "that was today? Oh dear, must have slipped my mind" before rewatching Lion King for reference, I sat there going "that sounds like Pitch" and then face palmed when Scar said that EXACT line.

Hiccup and Jack are SO adorable, I love writing their friendship turning romance, it's the best! Let me know your thoughts! Review!
