Chapter 4
The trio stepped out of the car, Logan letting out a long whistle as he looked up at the sprawling mansion. "You ain't kidding bro! That's what I call beyond filthy rich."
"What kind of trouble did you drag in with you this time, Victor?" The thin woman with caramel skin, white hair and hands on her hips asked from the top of the steps.
Logan's ear picked up on the slight African accent, Central if he wasn't mistaken, as Victor smiled and rushed up the steps to give a big hug to the woman. "Ororo! Good to see you again! This is my brother Ji-...uh...Logan, and his wife Marie."
She gave them both a sorrowful smile. "Oh yes...the couple whose child was taken. I'm so sorry for the pain you must be going through."
Marie nodded as she shivered against the sudden light wind and dark clouds that had begun to form in the sky above them. "Thank you. Odd...I thought the forecast said it wasn't supposed to rain today."
Ororo looked up. "Oh, sorry about that." As quickly as they came, the dark clouds dispersed and the sun once again shined brightly.
Logan's eyes got wide. "You're the one that can control the weather. I've heard about you."
She gave a small smile. "All good, I hope." Giving Victor a wink before turning towards the entrance. "This way. The Professor is waiting for you in his office."
As they followed Ororo in, Logan and Marie both smiled at the children who were looking at them curiously.
As they got to the office, the doors opened and Logan startled a little to see the people in the room. He didn't expect that there would be people other than this professor that was mentioned, and it put him on edge.
Victor could smell the sudden surprise coming from his brother, and hear his quickening heartbeat. "It's ok bro. They're all friends, there's no danger here." Victor took the lead into the room to help set Logan at ease.
After the doors closed, Logan took a good look at the others in the room who were all looking at him. His eyes landed on one with dark blue skin, yellow eyes, pointed ears, a tail and what looked like branding marks on his body. "So...um...I take it you're all mutants?"
The blue man nodded. "I am Kurt Wagner, but in the Munich circus I was known as the incredible-"
A thin man standing next to a bookcase grunted. "Not now, Kurt."
"Sorry. You may call me Nightcrawler." Kurt smiled sheepishly, showing his fanged teeth.
Victor's head cocked to the side. "Du bist neu. Wie lange bist du schon im Team?" (You're new. How long have you been with the team?)
Kurt's eyes widened at hearing his native tongue. "Etwas mehr als ein Jahr. Du sprichst Deutsch." (A little over a year. You speak German.)
Vic nodded. "Ja. Ich habe jetzt zwölf Jahre dort gelebt. Du bist katholisch? Ich erkenne diese Narben ... Buße." (Yes. I've lived there 12 years now. You're Catholic? I recognize those scars...penance.)
Kurt looked down shamefully. "Ich habe schreckliche Dinge in meinem Leben getan. Ich bete eines Tages, dass mir vergeben wird." (I have done terrible things in my life. I pray someday I will be forgiven.)
Logan shook his head. "Hey. For those of us that don't speak German...can we stick to English, please."
Vic snorted at Logan. "Now you know how I feel when you and Sophia get going."
Marie tried to stifle a laugh. "Told ya." She muttered to Logan.
The man standing next to the bookcase looked at the pair over the top of his glasses. "I'm Dr. Hank McCoy. Logan, I've worked with your brother over the years and if you don't mind, I would like to ask you some questions about your mutation. See how it compares with Victor's."
Logan shot a glare at Victor before turning towards Hank. "We got the same mutation...ask him your questions."
Marie looked Hank up and down. "Dr. Hank McCoy. I've seen some of your speeches, but...uh...you looked...different?"
Hank chuckled. "Yes, that's the other side of me. Beast."
Logan folded his arms across his chest and scoffed. "You don't look very beastly to me."
Before his eyes, the thin, pasty man transformed into a muscular, furry blue creature that said something along the line of part bear, part gorilla. "Is that better for you?" Beast asked.
Logan smirked. "Yeah...I guess that qualifies you as a beast."
Victor shook his head. "Remember what I said about pissing people off around here? Mind your manners." Vic gestured towards the older, bald man, nicely dressed in a dark blue suit, sitting behind the large desk. "This is the guy that runs this place and who has agreed to help you. Professor Charles Xavier."
Charles stretched his arm across the desk towards Logan as Logan reached to shake his hand. "Thanks for helping us, Chuck."
Charles' brow lifted. "I beg your pardon." The offense coming through in his baritone voice, thick with a British accent.
Logan stammered. "Um...I'm sorry...Mr. Xavier? Professor?"
"You may call me Charles if you'd like, but not Chuck...James."
Logan's jaw dropped. "Sorry, habit. My boss and friend goes by Chuck. How did you know my real name?" He glanced at Victor. "Never mind. I guess Victoria told you."
"Hey!" Vic growled at Logan as his claws slowly started growing. He was never fond of Logan using the femine form of his name, even in jest, and it had always been a good way to start a fight between the pair.
Charles raised a hand. "Boys...now is not the time for sibling squabbles. Victor didn't tell me, I picked it up in your thoughts as soon as you walked into the room. I try not to intrude into the minds of others, but the thought was at the front and very strong, as well as thoughts of Luke, and that is what we are here for, your son."
Victor nodded. "Absolutely correct Professor, I apologize for my outburst. Just these 3 for the team then?"
Charles shook his head. "There is one other that I've enlisted. He should have been here already, but-" Charles stopped speaking for a heartbeat. "Ah. Here he comes now."
A second later the door opened and Logan stiffened at the voice behind him. "I'm here now and we can get this party started. What's the plan, Professor?"
Logan turned to look, giving a glare at the newcomer. "You gotta be kidding me! No way in hell is this jerk coming along on this ride!"
"I don't see that you have much of a say in the matter, Logie Bear. The Professor asked me to come help, and I'm here. Deal with it."
Logan let out a snarl and before anyone could blink, the tip of a bone claw was pressing into the soft hollow of the man's throat. "How many times do I need to tell you not to call me that!"
Marie rolled her eyes. "Wolverine. Down boy! Wade wants us to get Luke back as much as we do. Don't you dare screw this up for us. Got it, bub?"
Wolverine gave a slight huff in Wade's face as the claw slowly retracted. "Next time, my mate might not be around to save your sorry ass, so watch that mouth of yours."
"How fascinating. There is a complete, separate entity within you. I thought it was only Sabretooth whose mutation was like that. And that claw...may I?" Charles couldn't contain the exuberance in his voice over what he had just witnessed.
Logan turned to see Charles coming around the desk. His eyes held the shock, as it was the first time he realized the man was confined to a wheelchair. "I...uh...I'm sorry. I shouldn't have looked at you like that. I...uh..."
Charles chuckled. "It's alright, you didn't know, don't let the wheelchair fool you. I can assure you that I'm not as helpless as it may appear."
"Yeah...Vic gave me a little heads up about that." He said as he held out his hand towards Charles' waiting hand, allowing him the opportunity to inspect it.
Charles pressed his thumb on various places along Logan's hand and wrist. "I can't even feel anything out of the ordinary with your claw retracted. Your hand feels normal. May I see the claw again?"
"Claws." Logan corrected as he slowly allowed them out. "Who's Sabretooth?"
Charles studied the hand and claws further. "Now I can actually feel them moving. Extra bones in your forearms and around your wrist area. Fascinating. Sabretooth is your brother's codename. We all operate on codenames here. Interesting that your claws come from your forearms, passing through your wrist and hand, while your brother's come from his nails. I think there might be other differences between the two of you than you realize. Please, allow Hank here to ask his questions and maybe run a few tests?"
Logan retracted his claws and jerked his hand away. "I'm not a lab rat. Codenames huh? Ok...Sabretooth, and I'm guessing Nightcrawler and Beast are your codenames." He said as he pointed to each respectively. "So what do they call you, weather changer?"
Ororo slightly tipped her head in an elegant manner. "I am called Storm. Wolverine...it has a nice ring to it. That shall be your codename from here on out."
Logan looked Wade up and down. "And what do they call you? Smart mouth? Asshole? Oh wait, I know! Big pile of shit!" Logan busted out laughing.
"Deadpool." Wade smirked as Logan's laughter came to an abrupt stop and was replaced with shock.
"You mean that guy that runs around in that red suit blowing shit up...that's...you? Does Nessa know about this?"
"Of course she knows, grandpa. Now can we just get on to why we're all here?" Wade snapped out.
~ooOoo~
The group sat around the office as the holographic display in the center of the room showed the various pictures of the facility while Charles spoke.
"The information gathered says that the abducted children have been brought here. It is an abandoned dam at Alkali Lake in Canada. According to our intel, the facility only has a minimum of security personnel, but the structure itself is heavily fortified."
"And you think this is where Luke has been taken? Why are they taking children there?" Marie asked.
Charles gave her a somber look. "I can't say for sure that your son is there, but I have discovered that your nanny, Kate Mills, has ties to Friends of Humanity. They are being used as pasties to abduct children, being told that mutant children will be...to put it as lightly as I can...disposed of."
Logan couldn't contain his shock or anger. "You mean they're gonna kill those kids?! Kill my son! Get me up there now!"
Charles held up a hand. "Slow down, Logan. I said that it's what they're being told. What I've learned through sources is that, in reality, the scientists there are using the children, extracting their mutant genetics, attempting to isolate the genes to alter the genetics of people who are not mutants, turning them into mutants."
"Why would they do this, Professor?" Storm questioned.
"I'm not really sure why, but I believe they may be trying to build some sort of army, possibly for the purpose of world domination."
Victor studied the images. "Or create super soldiers. Our own military has run experiments for decades trying to achieve something like that...but it never turns out very well. This could be some type of military operation. What agency is behind this would be hard telling, but it sure as hell isn't the US."
Logan grunted. "How can you be so sure it's not America's military? You really think they're above using children, Vic? Why do you think I discharged from the Army after WWII? Trust me, American military isn't so squeaky clean."
Victor lifted a brow at Logan. "We only use people enlisted, adults who have given consent and know the risks involved."
Logan's mouth gaped open. "We need to have a long talk about this research you do, bro."
"The area I work in is mechanical weapons, but we're not ignorant of what goes on in other areas." Vic turned his attention back to the display. "What kind of security are we looking at here, Professor?"
"The concrete itself is fortified and set in a way that should it become compromised, not only would it flood the surrounding areas at the bottom of the dam, it will also flood the interior of the facility, drowning anyone inside. The access tunnels have been modified with infrared beams, triggering the tunnels to become flooded, in order to prevent anybody using them as a passage into the facility."
Vic continued to study the image, using his finger to enhance the area of the main entrance. "You said limited personnel, that would imply that most of their guards are here at the main doors, and others further in the place. Most likely guarding the areas where the children are being held and patrolling the corridors. We could just blow these doors, and if we're fast enough, get in, spread out, and take them by surprise before they knew what hit them and have time to regroup."
Charles shook his head. "It's not that simple. These doors are made with an alloy called adamantium. It's an extremely hard metal, and best we can tell, the doors are at least a foot thick."
Victor shook his head. "Yeah...I know all about adamantium. We've been working with it to create body and vehicle armor for our troops, but even a thin layer is too heavy. A foot huh? That's gonna be a big problem, there's not enough C-4 in the world to blast through that. Hell...I doubt a nuke could barely put a dent in it, and my claws might be strong enough to cut steel like butter, but it would take months to get through that."
Charles nodded. "The only way to cut through adamantium is with adamantium."
Wade thought for a moment when the lightbulb went off in his head. "Vic, could you get hold of some of this stuff? We could coat my swords and maybe slice through it."
Victor shook his head. "There's no way I could get any from the lab without a shit ton of red tape and questions. The railroad tracks on my collar might allow me a few privileges, but nothing like that. Besides, coating your swords would make them too heavy, it would slow your reflexes when we might need it the most."
Logan nodded. "And I'm sure it would take more than one blow to cut through the doors. By the time you get through, the guards on the other side will already be alerted and in position to attack. It would have to be taken out with one strike."
"Kurt, couldn't you just pop us in?" Storm questioned.
Kurt shook his head. "I can only materialize to places I've been to before or have seen pictures of. Attempting such a thing blindly, I could inadvertently "pop" us inside of a wall."
Victor's head turned to the side. "What the hell are you talking about? What exactly is your ability anyways?"
Kurt disappeared in a puff of black smoke, only to reappear behind Victor. "Teleportation." He said in Vic's ear.
Victor slowly turned his head to look at the man. "I let you have that one. Sneak up on me again and you might be having your judgement day sooner than you think. Just a heads up...don't try that with Jimmy. He's a little more jumpier than I am."
Logan's brow lifted. "I wouldn't say jumpy, just less patient."
"Too bad we can't just coat yours or Logan's claws with that metal stuff. That would probably cut through those doors." Wade blurted out.
Victor shook his head. "You couldn't coat just our claws, it would require infusing our entire bone structure, and that thought had already been discarded by the research lab several years ago. It seems a person would have to have a specific mutation marker to survive the process. I don't have the marker."
There was an eerie silence as Victor, Hank and Charles all looked at Logan.
Logan gulped. "What? What y'all looking at me for?"
The corner of Victor's mouth slowly curled up into a smirk.
Marie's eyes got wide as the realization of what they were thinking slowly sank in. "Ooooh. I don't like this."
