Author's Note: Hey everyone, Mandalore here. This is the next chapter of my DC Fanfic Universe. Sorry it took this long, but I had problems with my Internet Conection. So, I've been wondering how to incorporate both Robin and the Joker into the series, so I decided to adapt both 'A Death in the Family' and the 'Killing Joke'. Special thanks to Threebranch for story and title assistance.
So, without further delay. Enjoy.
Prologue
Life in Gotham can be hard for anyone, especially for a thirteen year old orphan. At least, that is the way it was for twelve year old Richard Grayson. It hadn't been long since the deaths of his parents and he was on the hunt for the man responsible.
Richard still remembered the day like it was yesterday. The Ringmaster had been forced to cut the funding on maintenance, causing the trapezes to break, the worn-out net to not be replaced and this resulted in his parents falling to their deaths right in front of him. And to make it worse, it was his mother's birthday.
Dick was lost in thought, just earlier that day he had given his mom a birthday present, a golden bracelet with two robins on it. The very same bracelet he was currently holding in his hand.
It had taken him longer than he hoped, but he finally tracked him down, the man how cut the ringmaster's funding which resulted in the Deaths of Richard's Parents. Tony Zuko was his name, and Dick had managed to track him, the man was found outside and alleyway talking to another man who appeared to be from the Falcone Crime Family, which had been dismantled several months ago during the Riddler Incident.
Dick watched as the two continued to talk, almost as if nothing was wrong. It made Richard's blood boil.
Taking a leap, he grabbed onto the man responsible for the death of his parents by the neck before pinning him to the ground.
"Hey, what are you…" Zuko screamed out as Richard continued to hold him down, just then the other man reached for his gun and pointed it straight at the boy.
"You sure have guts, kid." He spoke in a menacing tone "But you just made a big mistake…"
The man was cut off as a strange object hit his hand, knocking the weapon in the process. The two men and the boy turned towards a nearby rooftop only to see an all too familiar silhouette.
"Batman." Zuko screamed as the vigilante leapt off the building and tackled the other man to the ground. Richard watched as the Dark Knight delivered several punches and kicks on to the man who desperately tried to fight back before being rendered unconscious. Richard released his grip on Zuko and walked up to the masked figure.
"That was awesome." He shouted in awe and amazement. "How'd you do that?" The boy continued hopping in excitement, but the vigilante simply ignored him.
Not long after, the sound of a police siren could be heard getting closer. Richard turned to Tony, then back to Batman only to see that he was already gone.
Not wanting to stick around, Dick climbed the nearest building until reaching the rooftop. As the boy continued running, there he was. Richard stood petrified, unsure of what to do, he knew running wasn't gonna get him anywhere and fighting was out of the question, so he simply stood there, completely frozen.
"Follow me." He spoke in a rough, yet welcoming voice. The boy proceeded to follow the caped crusader along the roof top.
The trip was shorter than he expected, then again, the Batmobile was faster than any sports car Richard knew of, but at long last they had arrived at the Batcave.
"Why are we here?" the boy asked while marveling at the sight of the Vigilante's hideout.
"I heard about the accident with your parents." The masked man responded "I knew you'd go after Zuko, so I've been keeping tabs on you."
"You were tracking me?" The boy glared at the Caped Crusader.
"I needed to make sure you wouldn't do anything stupid and get yourself killed."
Dick opened his mouth, but then closed it as he realized something. He had acted foolishly and would have been shot if it weren't for Batman. But then his eyes squinted about something the Dark Knight said.
"Wait, how did you know? They never published why the accident happened."
"I didn't need to read about it to know what happened." The vigilante then reached for his mask before pulling on it, revealing his face. Richard's eyes widened at the face beneath the mask.
"You're Bruce Wayne. You were there when it happened." Bruce then walked up to the young boy before placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Listen, Richard, I know how you feel. I've been where you are now, I know what it's like for your parents to die right in front of you." Richard lowered his head to the ground. He knew the story of Bruce Wayne as much as anyone else in Gotham. "I can help you, Dick." Richard turned to look at Bruce, the man had a smile of his face, like the kind his father would give him.
Nodding with an air of confidence, Richard wrapped his arms around the man. Alfred Pennyworth watched from a distance, before walking away in a huff.
